community spotlight Igniting The Community to Recognize April, Autism Awareness Month April, Autism Awareness Month, is in full swing and Hope For Three, local autism advocates, is hitting the streets to spread the Power of Three: Awareness, Action and Acceptance! Organizers say the Power of Three is a must to help children with autism (1 in 45 school-age children affected) thrive and live the best life possible.

“Autism is a very complex disorder,” said Darla Farmer, Founder and Executive Director of Hope For Three. “We recognize for our community to take action and give unconditional acceptance to autism families, they must be aware and educated about autism spectrum disorder. Among the many ways, we bring awareness is through various events such as, Car Wash for Kids (4-8-18), “Strike Out” Autism (4-29-18), Golf “Fore” Autism, Jigsaw Puzzle Competition and Annual Luncheon.”

sentence. Children on the spectrum may be uniquely different but, not less. Autism acceptance and inclusion is a crucial component in building relationships, regardless if it is through therapy, education, on the playground, church, store or restaurant. Children with autism want to enjoy and do what other children enjoy.

Action

Awareness In 2007, the United Nations declared April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day in perpetuity and the entire Month has become Autism Awareness Month. Hope For Three, founded in 2011, vowed its first celebration of April, Autism Awareness Month in 2012, would reach countywide and beyond. Today, the organization continues to garner the support of Fort Bend County Judge Robert Hebert and all 18 City Mayors, whereby each proclaims the month of April as Autism Awareness Month and encourages their city to support Hope For Three, its mission and local families and children living with autism spectrum disorder.

Although Autism Awareness Month is recognized worldwide during the month of April, “we live our mission 365 days a year, said Farmer. To date, the organization has awarded, with the help of generous donors, grantors and volunteers, over $600,000 in financial assistance to help bridge the gap between families and autism service providers. Many therapies that are needed for children on the autism spectrum are not covered by insurance. If insurance does cover cost, it is often with a limited number of sessions. Statistics note it costs more than $60,000 per year to care for one child with autism. There is no known cause or cure for autism, but early diagnosis is key to successful outcomes.

Acceptance Autism is the fastest growing children’s disorder, more prevalent that AIDS, cancer and diabetes, combined. Many autism families know, all too well, autism spectrum disorder is not going away. However, it is not a death

Field during the Sugar Land Skeeters Opening Weekend. Strike Out is part of the Hope For Three’s countywide awareness campaigns, whereby Judge Robert Hebert, all 18 City Mayors, Sugar Land Skeeters, donors, volunteers and the community, recognize April as Autism Awareness Month. The event is an opportunity for Hope For Three to host more than 400 autism family members to an afternoon of fun, food and comradeship. Visit hopeforthree.org/strike-out-autism to volunteer or, RSVP your family for the event. April 2018

Gather cereal boxes and take to the food bank so the supplies are full for when the children are home and are not able to receive free breakfasts and lunches. health report Protect Yourself From Skin Cancer With more than two million people diagnosed every year, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. It’s also one of the most treatable cancers when diagnosed early, and largely preventable if you avoid the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.

minutes ahead of sun exposure and reapply every two hours and after swimming, sweating or toweling off. Water-resistant sunscreen still needs to be reapplied often. You can use a sunscreen with a minimum SPF (sun protection factor) of 15, but the higher the number, the better.

“These rays can cause damage in as little as 15 minutes, but a few simple actions can go a long way toward safeguarding ourselves,” said Melissa Crosby, M.D., plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.

Don’t forget to check the expiration date on sunscreen. That bottle from your beach vacation three years ago has most likely lost its effectiveness. If there is no expiration date, three years is considered the standard shelf life for sunscreen, but higher temperatures can shorten the lifespan.

Staying out of the sun is the first and foremost recommendation. But when you can’t avoid being exposed, a combination of sunscreen and protective clothing is your best bet. “Sunscreen alone is helpful, but loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long pants made from tightly woven fabric offer the best protection,” said Crosby. “Obviously, we can’t completely cover ourselves in fabric, so sunscreen is good for those areas of the skin that remain exposed.” A hat helps protect your scalp, face, ears and even your neck. Choose canvas over straw, which can let rays through its holes. Sunglasses not only protect the sensitive skin around your eyes, but they can also help prevent cataracts. UNDERSTANDING MISBEHAVIOR IN CHILDREN If only children came with an instruction manual. Our beautiful baby comes into the world and fills our hearts with more joy than we could have imagined. The smiles make our hearts melt and the excitement of witnessing each milestone is indescribable. Then one day, the honeymoon period ends and the challenging behaviors begin! That precious little toddler starts to throw tantrums and use the word “No!” Our curious preschooler starts testing the limits to see where the line is drawn. We are faced with the challenges of aggressive behavior, talking back, lying, and defiance. Where is that manual when we really need it? Our children may not come with instructions, but decades of research on child behavior and development has given us something very close. If there was a manual for understanding misbehavior in children, it would probably include these important steps:

Learn your child’s temperament

A child’s temperament is made up of characteristics that define their behavioral style. These traits are inherited and can be observed from infancy. There are nine categories that have been defined to describe temperament: Activity level, regularity, adaptability, approach to novelty, emotional intensity, quality of mood, sensory sensitivity, distractibility, and persistence. For example, does your child have a calm or energetic personality? Is he open and excited

Lindsay Asawa, Ph.D., PLLC

about new experiences or fearful and reserved? Understanding your child’s personality and temperament sets the stage for managing the challenging behaviors that lie ahead.

Know what to expect Every parent should have a basic understanding of child development. Countless books, websites, and classes about child development are available to parents. It is important to know what behaviors to expect as your child grows. Tantrums and testing limits are normal parts of development. If we know those behaviors are coming, we can mentally and emotionally prepare for them. We are less likely to take those behaviors personally or feel that we have done something wrong.

Understand the message they are communicating

Behavior in children can be complex, but at times it can also be very simple. Children often misbehave if there is a need that is not being met. Are they hungry? Tired? Do they have excess energy or feel overstimulated? Aside from basic needs, children also have emotional needs that may be overlooked. They need love, affection, safety, a sense of power, and a feeling of belonging. Emotions are very powerful and difficult for children to understand. In an attempt to cope with those overwhelming emotions (e.g., anger, fear, hurt, boredom, anxiety),

parentlife

children often behave in a way that serves as a coping strategy. Yelling at mom may release anxiety and tension. Although it serves a purpose in that moment, the behaviors may be harmful and unhealthy. If we can identify what is being communicated, we can give them healthier ways to cope.

Recognize the power of attention

“What we give our attention to – grows” (Kenneth Blanchard). Attention is one of the most powerful rewards we can give our children. Whether positive or negative attention, children soak it up. Be sure you are using it wisely! Ask yourself, “What behaviors am I rewarding?” and “Have others rewarded this behavior with attention?” Use constant praise and encouragement when you see behaviors that need rewarding, but make a conscious decision to ignore and take away attention from the behaviors that need to stop. If we start using attention strategically, it can become a powerful tool in understanding and managing behavior.

Consider other possibilities

Beyond the typical causes of behavior, there are times when something else is going on that needs to be addressed. Factors such as illness, trauma, hormone changes, chemical imbalances, and neurological differences can greatly impact behavior in children. These possibilities should be considered when all other explanations have fallen short. A medical, psychological, or neurological evaluation may be necessary to piece together the puzzle. Understanding is the first step toward preventing and changing difficult behaviors. Following these steps of the “instruction manual” will at least give us greater confidence to face the challenges ahead. Maybe this whole parenting thing doesn’t have to be so confusing after all!

And

Alley on the Town is back at it again!

Question? Have you thought about what I shared last month? About the importance of date nights in a marriage?

If you answered yes, AWESOME!!! Love that you are trying to make some fun changes. Date nights are an impactful way to reconnect with your spouse. If you answered no, I hope this will help inspire you to enjoy some alone time with your spouse and explore some of the wonderful places in Houston and its surrounding areas. Date nights also help break up the monotony of your everyday normal routine. It’s easy to always go to the same places you are familiar (and comfortable) with BUT I encourage you to try something new together. Houston has SO much to offer. Your options are endless.

OK, OK, not going to beat a dead horse here. I think it’s pretty obvious how I feel about date nights, they are important. So, you ready to hear about this month’s date-night dining adventure? Yay! Let’s get right to it!

We grabbed a drink outdoors then decided to head inside. The restaurant had a laid back and relaxed feel that oozed throughout. Immediately making us feel comfortable and not out of place. There was a turnable located as you walked in along with a huge selection of records on one wall. New releases and re-releases. If you spotted anything you liked you could request for it to be played OR you could purchase the album to take home with you.

We ended up having the most gorgeous spring like weather for our night out. The square had all its trees lit up which made it super romantic holding hands and walking as we windowed shopped. We stopped to have dinner at a placed called, Vino & Vinyl. The VERY first thing that caught my eye was the outdoor open bar that was connected to the restaurant. Loved being able to walk up to the bar and grab a glass of wine and still be outside on the brick paved sidewalk. Tables were available outdoors for those that preferred to dine al fresco.

Local artist’s work hung throughout the restaurant which made for great conversation with my hubby. AND as if this place couldn’t get any cooler, the menus were made of recycled album covers!!!

It’s was very clear to me that the vision of Vino &Vinyl was not just about the food but about the whole dining experience. The music, the wine, the menu options all coming together like a great dinner party. It was like walking into your best friend’s house. A place where you come as you are and leave feeling a whole lot better. For more information please visit: https://vino-vinyl.com

“A place where you come as you are Paul Killingsworth, the owner, was at the restaurant that night and we were able to chat with him about Vino & Vinyl.

and leave feeling a whole lot better.”

When I asked Paul how he would describe his vision he said, “We’re all about finding soulful wines and soulful music. Music and wine that have a personality, a unique voice, and a sense of place. Style. Having amazing food to go along, is a bonus” Seriously, who wouldn’t want to eat there after hearing that, right??! Our dining experience was wonderful. The menu had a variety of options to suit a person’s appreciation of taste and flavor.

We started off with a shared artisan cheese board. Then followed that by two of their dinner specials for that night. Their food is made from scratch and sometimes the menu changes based on what is in season . Now, THAT is the kind of place I LOVE to eat at. Fresh local ingredients can take an ordinary meal from ok to one of the best meals you have ever had in your life! The staff helped us select wines that paired well with our meal which sent us into foodie heaven. They have recently added a brunch to their menu that I can’t wait to check out! It’s on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays from 10am – 3pm. Would love if you guys would head over to try it out.

ugging Out

issouri City

For any family hoping to enjoy a night bugging out, then it’s almost time to head on over to the Missouri City Recreation & Tennis Center. Located on 2701 Cypress Point Drive, the Center will be hosting a creepy, crawly evening fill with bug themed activities. The night is designed to entertain guests with an evening of arts and crafts. Guests will also get a chance to leave with their own lady bugs, which gives you a chance to take the fun back home with you. The event begins at 6:00 P.M. and ends at 8:30 that same evening. Feel free to arrive

and leave whenever you want, so you won’t have to worry about arriving at any specific time. Just remember that you’ll need to provide supervision for your kids throughout the evening. If your kids are feeling some hunger pains, there will also be light snacks and drinks available for guests. Best of all, the even is free for residents of Missouri City! Also on hand will be the Fort Bend County Master Gardeners. This group of bug lovers will be there to teach guests about helpful insects and host bug displays for the kids. If you’ve

never heard of them before, the Master Gardeners have been around since 1989. They are gardeners who are specially trained in horticulture and who volunteer for different events throughout the community. They’re always present at events to help pass on their knowledge and teach people about the details of gardening. When they’re not present at events, they’re also available to provide gardening advice over their gardening hotline. People interested in joining the Master Gardeners simply have to attend training classes and pay the application costs. If you’re interested in becoming a Master Gardener, you can visit them at their website. It’s the perfect group for anyone who wants to increase their gardening knowledge and skills. As for the Recreation & Tennis Center itself, guests who have never been before will find plenty to come back for. The Center includes a recreation room with plenty of cardio equipment, like treadmills, elliptical trainers, and rowing machines. There’s also weight equipment, such as dumbbells and squat racks. If you’d rather feed your competitive side, you can head to the Center’s basketball court or outside to the tennis courts. There are also batting cages where you can practice your batting skills, plus a Kid Zone where parents can leave their kids. The center has varying hours, but it’s open for seven days a week, with breaks only on national holidays. If you’d like to learn more about the Center, you can visit them at their website or give them a call at 281-403-8637. Whether you’re visiting them for the Bugging Out event or you’re just dropping in to get on one of the exercise machines, the Recreation & Tennis Center always provides a comfortable environment for guests of all ages.
