Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Is Here February is packed with things to do around the city of Houston, but there are few bigger events taking place than the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The rodeo has its roots in livestock shows that used to be held around the city of Houston as early as the 1920s. However, the rodeo has grown by leaps and bounds since it was first held. Today, it is the largest livestock show in the world, hosting 31,000 livestock entries across different competitions and contests. Through the last half of the 20th century, it was held in Houston’s famed Astrodome, but it has taken place in Houston’s NRG Stadium since 2003. Every year, the rodeo is a massive attraction for Houston, with attendance reaching the millions over the 20 days it takes place. This year, the rodeo will happen from Tuesday, February 27th through Sunday, March 18th. While there will be plenty of livestock to see, the rodeo is also popular for the many popular bands that play during the event.

2018 looks like it will be bringing some of the biggest names in country music to the event. The events kick off the first night of the rodeo with country music legend Garth Brooks arriving in town. Brooks, recipient of 12 Country Music Association awards, 17 American Music Awards, and 22 Academy of Country Music awards, is among the most widely recognized country musicians of the past few decades. With recognizable songs like “The Thunder Rolls” and “Unanswered Prayers,” Brooks will be thrilling the crowd with some of his most recognizable hits. Brooks will actually be returning to close the event with a second concert on March 18th, giving fans two opportunities to watch him play. Yet another popular recording artist that will be arriving is Blake Shelton. Scheduled to play on Thursday, March 1st, Shelton will be performing such classics as “A Guy with a Girl” and “She’s Got a Way with Words.” Shelton has a highly decorated 17-year career that includes two American Music

awards, four Academy of Country Music awards, and nine Country Music Association awards to his name. A fresher face to the country music scene is Kelsea Ballerini, who released her first number one single, “Love Me Like You Mean It,” in 2015. Ballerini has already earned two Academy of Country Music awards during her brief career. Fans can look forward to seeing her when she plays on Saturday, March 3rd. Pop music lovers may want to arrive on March 4th, when Alessia Cara will be on stage to perform her hit single, “Here.” A young singer from Canada, Cara is also known for pop hits like “Scars to Your Beautiful” and “Wild Things.” Meanwhile, long existing American rock group One Republic will be stopping by on March 14th to sing one of their dozens of hits, such as “Love Runs Out” and “Kids.” These are only a few of the many performers that will be at the rodeo this year, so visit http://www.rodeohouston.com to learn about all of this year’s shows.

1. If you love collards… now that we have had some cold weather, it’s time to throw a few seeds into some tossed up soil and they should take and sprout. I have tried to plant them sooner but they like the cold! 6. On my night side table now… “Vincent and Theo” The Van Gogh Brothers by Deborah Heiligman and “All the Ugly and Wonderful Things” by Bryn Greenwood.

2.It’s time to go to the local shelter and see if anyone needs jackets, or toiletries. Lots of people give at the end of the year but by now the supplies are depleted.

7. Go to The Museum of Fine Arts and check out the exhibit “Bestowing Beauty: Masterpieces from Persian Lands.” (Hurry though, it ends mid-month) Have the children take their sketchbooks and pick their favorite pieces to sketch. They might become inspired to take a pottery class too!

3. Gather the children and ask then to go through their own rooms if they are able to. Keeping up with the organizing so their spaces are readied for spring. In fact, I would go ahead and pull the curtains and bed spreads and take to be cleaned as well.

8. Go purchase some violets and orchids for the house. This time of year, it’s always nice to look down and see a beautiful little blossom during the winter months. That always makes me smile!

4. Plan the activities that you want to do during spring break. If you have not booked the trip it’s still not too late to get some last-minute deals. Having planned the activities prior to departure makes enjoying the trip so much easier.

9. One of the easiest ways to get healthy is to incorporate garlic into your diet. I try to put garlic in every veggie that I make and now my family thinks there’s something wrong with vegetables when I don’t! LOL Try my Garlicky Green Beans…they are always a favorite!

5. Invite a few friends over for tea and some brunch. Take time to listen to their lives and be in the moment with them.

10. Spend an afternoon with the children reading books to them. Make a list of the classics and give them the gift of imagination from great literary works. Start with “Alice in Wonderland“ or “Huckleberry Finn.”

Helping The

Homeless Students Learn About Hardships Fellow Teens Have Gone Though

community outreach Although big strides have been made toward preventing homelessness among young people, it continues to remain a problem that affects kids throughout Texas. To help bring awareness to this problem, Parks Youth Ranch is inviting high school juniors and seniors from the Fort Bend County area to participate in Another Night Out – Homelessness 101. This event is meant to educate and inform high schoolers about homelessness, the hardships that kids face when they’re homeless, and the struggles that those kids face when they’re living on the streets. However, this event is meant to help students learn what homeless was through a very real and personal experience. Participants will be raising money to support the work of Parks Youth Ranch, which helps the homeless kids of the area. Starting at 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday, February 23rd, students will spend the night outdoors on the Constellation Field park grounds and get just the smallest taste of what homeless kids go through. The event costs $20 to attend, and both food and

drinks will be provided for everyone attending. This will be a chance for students to get a deep understanding of homelessness in a safe environment surrounded by instructors and their friends. Parks Youth Ranch makes it its mission to provide emergency shelter, counseling, and other services to help youth who are living on the streets. Opened in 2011, the park works with youth anywhere between the ages of seven and 17. It’s a healthy environment where these neglected children can find a refuge from their circumstances. The ranch sits on eight acres of land that includes two fully stocked fishing ponds. This gives kids the chance to experience nature and get away from the stress that homelessness creates, at least temporarily. The long-term plan for every child who arrive is to counsel them, give them a place to stay temporarily, and create a plan of action for getting back on their feet. Each year, the ranch provides 32,850 meals, 6,570 nights of emergency shelter, and drives kids

close to 9,000 total miles to get them to school. 8,760 hours of direct care are provided and 720 hours of mentoring provided. With all of the services that the ranch provides, it’s important for them to keep bringing in funds from sympathetic donors. That’s where events like Another Night Out can help. The park will be looking for event sponsors for Another Night Out, with all money going toward helping the homeless of the area. Supporters can commit any amount between $100 to $5,000. All students must have a signed parental consent form filled out, and the event will last through until the following day at 7:00 A.M. If you’re interested in supporting the event, you can get in touch with Parks Youth Ranch by going to http://www. parksyouthranch.org/. There, you can find out more about the event and becoming a sponsor. The money you contribute will help the ranch continue its efforts to counsel and house the neediest children living in the Fort Bend County region.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Offers New Lymphedema Management Program Through the collaboration between oncology services and rehabilitation therapy at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, cancer survivors experiencing lymphedema will soon have access to a beneficial treatment called complete decongestive therapy (CDT).

CDT uses a set of techniques administered and taught by credentialed therapists to reduce the symptoms of swelling. Certified lymphedema therapist Kimberly Kainer, OTR, CLT, is the lead therapist for the Lymphedema Management Program at Houston Methodist Sugar Land.

CDT is a comprehensive therapy that reduces the effects of lymphedema, the build-up of lymphatic fluid that causes swelling, discomfort and a loss of flexibility.

“This program will provide significant benefits to patients through the delivery of CDT a comprehensive set of techniques that may include manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandages and garments, and therapeutic exercises,” said Kainer. “I create an individualized treatment plan that focuses on each patient’s unique symptoms, and it really makes a difference in the quality of life for the patient. This is a chronic condition with no cure, but the ability to manage it with therapy is a relief for many patients.”

“We are excited about the benefits of this therapy and are thrilled to be able to offer it to our patients,” said Sean Croft, PT, MPT, director of rehabilitation services at Houston Methodist Sugar Land. “Because there are no medications currently available for lymphedema, CDT is a major step forward, in helping survivors in their post-cancer recovery.” Lymphedema can occur when lymph nodes are removed during surgery or damaged from radiation therapy during cancer treatment. The flow of lymph fluid is disrupted, which leads to swelling in different parts of the body. Swelling can worsen over time and become severe, causing skin sores to develop. If left untreated, the area is susceptible to infection. However, early recognition and prompt intervention can alter the course of the condition. For this reason, Houston Methodist Sugar Land has incorporated bioimpedance devices that enable staff to measure subclinical changes in the extracellular fluid (ECF) and discover lymphedema up to 10 months earlier than current measurement techniques.

Kainer says that learning how to prevent infection in affected areas is an important part of treatment. Since swelling makes it easier for bacteria to grow, patients are encouraged to take extra precautions to keep those areas healthy. “It’s important to remember to keep your skin clean and well-moisturized and to check it regularly for cuts, sores, bug bites or blisters,” she said. “Being extra careful while shaving, avoiding picking at or cutting your cuticles, and wearing shoes that fit well are actions that we all should adopt, but they are especially important for patients with lymphedema because even a small injury can lead to infection.”

health report

Kimberly Kainer, OTR, CLT Amy Sebastian-Deutsch, DNP, APRN, CNS, AOCNS, director of oncology services at Houston Methodist Sugar Land, said the addition of the Lymphedema Management Program is just one element in the hospital’s holistic approach to treating cancer an approach that begins with screening and diagnosis and continues across the care continuum. “In some cases, lymphedema occurs shortly after surgery or radiation,” Sebastian-Deutsch explained. “But for some patients, it doesn’t develop until months or even years later, long after their cancer treatment is over. Incorporating the ability to detect subclinical lymphedema gives us the opportunity to implement treatment plans early, which is one way we are extending our care and support to enrich the lives of survivors.” To learn more about lymphedema therapy or to schedule an appointment, call 281.274.7979. Prioritizing

Parenting in

By Lindsay Asawa

2018

The new year brings a fresh start and an opportunity to examine areas of life that need attention. Here is a helpful activity to get you started. Make a list of your priorities and the things in your life that you value most (ex: family, kids, marriage, friends, exercise, self-care, work performance, school performance). Give each of these areas a grade from A through F according to the effort you have made and the time you have spent on each. Using this strategy, you can identify areas that need your attention this year. Keep in mind, these grades may fluctuate week-to-week and even day-to-day. Like a final report card, what is important is the overall effort through the course of the year. Report cards also help us understand if we are doing our best, if our course load is too heavy, and when to ask for help. Straight A’s may be an unrealistic goal, but instead we can try hard to remember and devote time to our priorities. For parents, our relationship with our children and their wellbeing is typically at the top of the priority list. However, there are so many ways we can unintentionally lose focus and let this priority slip. We may take on new challenges at work, care for an aging parent, decide to go back to school, volunteer for other positions, and start new projects at home. None of these are bad things. In fact, focusing on these activities may improve your grades in other prioritized areas of life. At the same time, we can slowly and sometimes unknowingly begin chipping away at our time spent parenting. This is not a reason for self-blame or judgment, but just a reminder to always keep your most valued priorities in sight.

For parents, our relationship with our children and their well-being is typically at the top of the priority list. When you are juggling so much and there are a limited number of hours in the day, prioritizing your children can be easier said than done. Many parents have to work, laundry has to get done, groceries run out, meals need to be made, and parents need a break sometimes! Here are some easy ways to ensure that you are keeping your children at the top of the priority list throughout the week:

1 2 4 6 3 5 7

Talk and Really Listen: Use every opportunity you have to start a conversation with your child. Ask about their day at school and follow up to learn more details. Listen carefully to what they have to say. You may learn a few things and they will bask in your undivided attention.

Enter Their World:

When you take time to play with your child, follow their lead. Ask what they want to play and let them take charge. After all, how often do they get the chance to be the leader? They will learn that you value their ideas, suggestions, and interests.

Stay In The Moment:

Set the phone aside (as hard as it is), turn off the television, and give your full attention to your child from time to time. Thoughts may come along and tug at your attention (ex: tasks to be done, deadlines to be met) but they can be ignored or saved for later. As many times as necessary, turn your attention back to your child.

Lindsay Asawa, Ph.D., PLLC

“Set the phone aside (as hard as it is), turn off the television, and give your full attention to your child from time to time.”

Choose Your Words:

Parents often forget that our statements to our child often become their inner voice as they mature and go out into the world. Think carefully about the words you choose. Look for behaviors and character traits that you can point out and praise. Share how proud you are and how much you enjoy spending time with them.

Take Time To Teach:

Children love to learn and they feel honored when mom or dad takes the time to teach them a few things. Explain how electricity works as you pay the electric bill, discuss why stoplights exist as you drive to school, or teach them how math calculations are used in baking.

Include Them:

Work and chores need to be done, but why not include your children in them? Give them tasks to complete as your “assistants” while you work from home. Take them to the office occasionally to see where you spend your time. Fold laundry and wash dishes together while getting a chance to have a conversation.

Have Fun Together:

It is important to just enjoy time together and make memories whenever you get the chance. Be sure to plan weekend outings, take a few minutes to play outside together, have dance parties, play board games, and show your children that you enjoy being with them.

Hit Texas’ Great Outdoors Spring Break is quickly approaching, and if you haven’t gotten ready for the break, you might be at a loss about what to do. Last minute planning can be difficult, especially since things like flights and hotels are typically booked as time gets closer to the holiday. Fortunately, there are last minute vacationing ideas you can use to have yourself a fantastic Spring Break. One idea to consider is taking a vacation to the great outdoors. Texas is filled with parks where you can camp, go hiking, and fish. Lake Houston Park, for example, is situated not too far northeast of Houston in a wooded wildlife area. The park has over 20 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and riding horses, and it’s also the only park managed by Houston Parks and Recreation that allows for overnight camping. With nearly 5,000 acres of land, there’s plenty to see and explore in the area. Want to stay in southern Houston or around Fort Bend County, you might instead want to visit Brazos Bend State Park. Known for the diverse wildlife that calls the area home, Brazos Bend State Park sits comfortably against the Brazos River. Guests can enjoy themselves on the

biking and hiking trails, go fishing, have a picnic at one of the many pavilions, and camp there overnight. These are only two examples of the many parks around the Houston area where you can enjoy your Spring Break surrounded by the natural beauty of Texas. Another option is to simply get to know Houston better. Many people, even longtime residents, aren’t familiar with the sights and sounds of the city. Considering how large Houston is, that’s no surprise. If you’re looking to get to know the area better, you can head to the Downtown Tunnels District.

by Jason Luthor This fascinating part of Houston is a system of tunnels beneath Houston’s downtown streets where you dine and go shopping. However, there are also tours that explore the area, including walking tours, tours by bus, and even paranormal tours. If you’d rather stay closer to the Fort Bend County area, you could always tour Sugar Land. The city was founded on the sugar industry and has a long and storied past. History lover might want to join the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation during their monthly tours of the area. These tours begin at the foundation’s Museum and explores the area of Old Sugar Land over the course of up to two hours. Similar walking tours are offered of Old Richmond, which begin on Morton street in the downtown area and cover the city’s court house, cemetery, and other historic sites in the area. The walking tours of both Sugarland and Richmond are great chances to get outdoors and learn more about the local history. No matter what your interests, there’s something to do around Houston. You’ll find there’s plenty of ways to enjoy your Spring Break, whether by camping at the local or touring the historic sites. February 2018

Visualizing Peace Where’s your happy place? Mine is the beach. Which is where I am right now, in my mind!

If you desire to find peace and quiet on a daily basis, one way is to take something very special to you that reminds you of your special spot and to make a place for that in your home. For example, gather shells from the shore and sand and in a place that you are comfortable include those things.
