REMEMBERING DEREK GARCIA ROLLE

On November 18th, 1971, a beautiful, baby boy was born to Simon and Idell Rolle, the 9th and last child of that union. His name was Derek Garcia Rolle. Derek: Leader of the people; Garcia: kind, loving, sociable. These names truly describe who he was, and oh how he loved to use and share his middle name!

Derek’s early education began at the Yellow Elder Primary School and then S. C. McPherson Junior High School. He graduated in 1989 from the A. F. Adderley Senior High School. He was a proud Tiger and continued to connect with his classmates over the years.

Derek was a lifelong learner. He held many certifications varying from leadership and management to other technical competencies that supported his business endeavors. During Covid, when everyone was forced to participate in meetings via zoom, he used the opportunity to master the technical aspects of managing virtual meeting spaces and was often sought after by his Toastmasters’ colleagues to support them with their meetings. He developed the art of creating flyers, brochures, digital programs and the like, and assisted many of his family and friends with their projects.

Throughout his lifetime Derek was never shy about hard work, and when he worked, he worked diligently and tirelessly. One of his first jobs was with the City Market food store chain. He would often speak fondly of his experiences there, and the number of people he met and worked with that helped to shape his passion for service excellence. Derek climbed the professional ladder in his career while serving for Caribbean Franchise Holdings Ltd. and subsequently Abaco Markets Ltd., as Vice President of Operations for the franchisee division with responsibilities for Domino’s Pizza, Dunkin Donuts and Dairy Queen and then as General Manager of Solomon’s Super Center.

It was during his time with Bobcat Bahamas where he learnt about the aspects of equipment operations

and management. This was very instrumental for him as he became owner and operator of Triton Solutions Enterprises, a business providing construction equipment rental for the last fourteen (14) years. Later, he established Attention To Detail (ATD) Soft Wash Solutions.

While working with Domino’s Pizza, he met Claudia Moss, they became great friends and found they shared many common interests, passions and pet peeves. One of their shared passions was travel and one of the pet peeves was poor service within the industry they worked in. It was by God’s own design that they worked together where both their passion and pet peeves they could experience and make an impact. Their work took them to many US states for conferences and training sessions, and they got to learn and grow together.

Derek was a logistical executioner like none other. He had a gift for seeing a process from start to finish and implementing the steps necessary to make it happen efficiently. His mantra was “work smarter not harder”. He was able to take any space and rearrange it to make it highly efficient. Derek had a servant’s heart, and it gave him great pleasure to help others and teach them everything he knew. The name Derek means leader of the people, and throughout his 53

years, others naturally followed him wherever he served.

Derek & Claudia married November 19th, 1994. This union produced twin children; a girl and boy, Hannah and Derek Rolle Jr. Derek was a very attentive father to his children Ajani, Simone, Hannah and Derek Jr. All had a special place in his heart. He lived to serve them.

Outside of work he served in his church by supporting in any way that he could. His responsibilities included driving the church bus and maintenance.

In the community he served by becoming a Toastmaster. He loved this organization deeply and used it as an opportunity to further develop himself as a public speaker and as an opportunity to help others to develop their own skills.

“My previous experiences have taught me that the more I serve the more I grow. This mindset positions me to live Mahatma Gandhi’s quote “the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”. I discover new things about myself at every level and through every individual that I serve.”

He was predeceased by his parents: Simon and Idell Rolle; his brothers: Ricardo Rolle, Joseph Hinsey, Prince Rolle and William Johnson; his sisters: Mizpah and Jacqueline Rolle; his nephews: Sanchez Swan, Jason and Jermaine Rolle; his nieces: Charlene and Daphne Styles; and his mother-in-law: Delores Huyler-Moss.

MUSICAL PRELUDE AND ENTRANCE OF FAMILY | Bro. Harry Simmons and the Public Officers Choir

OPENING REMARKS | Bishop Chevol Gray, Senior Pastor, COGOP Fox Hill

OPENING HYMN | ”And Can It Be”

And can it be that I should gain An interest in the Savior’s blood? Died He for me, who caused His pain— For me, who Him to death pursued?

Amazing love! How can it be, That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

’Tis mystery all: thee Immortal dies: Who can explore His strange design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries To sound the depths of love divine. ’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more.

He left His Father’s throne above So free, so infinite His grace— Emptied Himself of all but love, And bled for Adam’s helpless race: ’Tis mercy all, immense and free, For O my God, it found out me!

INVOCATION | Associate Pastor, Samuel Nelson

Long my imprisoned spirit lay Fast bound in sin and nature’s night; Thine eye diffused a quickening ray I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains feel off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him, is mine; Alive in Him, my living Head, And clothed in righteousness divine, Bold I approach thee eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

SONG | Farther Along

Tempted and tried, we’re oft made to wonder Why it should be thus all the day long, While there are others living about us, Never molested, though in the wrong.

(Chorus)

Farther along we’ll know all about it, Farther along we’ll understand why; Cheer up my brother, live in the sunshine, We’ll understand it all by and by.

When death has come and taken our loved ones, It leaves our home so lonely and drear, Then do we wonder why others prosper Living so wicked year after year.

Faithful til death, said our loving Master A few more days to labor and wait, Toils of the road will then seem as nothing As we sweep through the beautiful gate.

When we see Jesus, coming in glory, When He comes from His home in the sky, Then we shall meet Him in that bright mansion, We’ll understand it all by and by.

INVOCATION | Pastor Chesley Finley

COMMITTAL | Bishop Branson Gibson

SONG | It Is well

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.

(Chorus)

It is well, it is well, With my soul, with my soul, and It is well; it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, let this blest assurance control that Christ has regarded my helpless estate, And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part but the whole, is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

And, Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll; the trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend Even so, it is well with my soul

CLOSING REMARKS | Moderator

MY MR. GARCIA!

When I met you there were several things that drew me to you including your great big smile and a genuine desire to help others. After I got to know you and your family better it was the profound love and care you had for your mother and sisters especially your sister Esther, who you referred to as your second mother, that drew me even closer. Our friendship meant the world to me because I could tell you anything and you would always be there to hear me out, helping me to see the brighter side of things, helping me to think things through logically and helping to see the best possible outcomes. You were my confidant, and encourager. When I doubted in myself you were always there to help me. You brought out he best in me and for that I will always cherish you. You have been my forever partner and helper, no matter the assignment, job or project you ensured I had what I needed. I remember when I was completing my degree programs you made certain I studied and completed assignments, you would make me coffee to make sure I stayed awake and met my deadlines. You made certain that everything I was working on, especially when I was planning an event for church, was done with excellence.

I will miss the baritone of your voice the golden oldies you enjoyed listening to and singing and dancing along with you. I will miss your corny jokes, quick wit and dry sense of humour. I will forever hold the memories of all our travel together, the business trips the family trips, the trying out new restaurants; you indulging me in trying all of the new sushi places even though it was not a dish you enjoyed. You did it to make me happy, this was who you were. Breakfast time at the house will no longer be the same, the kids looked forward to giving you their orders for breakfast the next morning, especially Hannah, and you made sure they never left the house without a hot meal. You would be very pleased to know Dj has stepped up and is making sure Hannah gets her breakfast and I get my smoothie. The greatest joy that we share will always be our children. I enjoyed watching you with them. They looked up to you; there was nothing you couldn’t do in their eyes. I will ensure that they remember the good times they had with you and with God’s help, we will get through this. Mr. Garcia, it’s been quite a journey, but I am grateful to God for placing you in my life and helping me to be the person that I am today.

Daddy,

you were a giver, a worker, a supporter. You did whatever you could for us and others. You showed compassion to people and cared for us, your children, your wife your siblings and other family. You treated us kindly and was never harsh. You did many things but always made time for us.

Daddy you were always very comedic, whenever you could, you would always slip in a joke, whether it was funny or not.

Daddy, you had the knowledge to do a multitude of things such as setting up the technical things for meetings for people all over the world, creating flyers for advertisement, power washing, soft washing and other things with your hands, you were always learning. You did a lot each day, for all of us starting with making breakfast in the morning, to Toastmasters meetings in the evenings and any and everything else in between.

You mentored many people and gave great advice. You taught me things like riding a bike, how to golf and how to fish. I will never forget my first driving lesson was with you when we went to Crooked Island. You supported us in school activities such as my soccer games or Hannah’s sports days. The times I spent with you I will remember forever.

I love you Daddy Dj

Tribute to My Father

Always kind, never hostile, and ever so gentle. From my younger years to now, he possessed so many positive qualities that anyone would be proud to emulate. He was always willing to help, selfless in the way he cheerfully and generously gave of himself to others. He approached life with optimism and had an incredible drive to learn and grow. He was supportive, patient, and devoted traits that defined him not only as a father but as a person.

I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the blessing of having him in my life. I want to say thank you, Dad. Thank you for all the times you acted as my personal chauffeur, for every breakfast you made just the way I liked it, and for always being there to comfort me through both joy and sorrow. Thank you for the corny dad jokes you told just to make us smile they always did. Your love never went unnoticed. It showed in the way you cared for us, in your qui et strength, and in the simple, everyday things you did. Though you are no longer here with us, your kindness, your laughter, and your lessons will always remain. You leave behind a legacy of love, generosity, and gentleness that will continue to guide us for the rest of our lives.

My Daddy

My daddy loved to sing, and he always sang to me and with me. We would make up our own songs and laugh about how silly they were. He always cheered for me when I sang with our choir. He was so proud of me for being brave when we went up on all of those big stages to sing. He would say Hannah, you gat this!

My daddy loved to see me dance and made sure to record all my dances for us to watch together.

When he picked me up from school he would make all of my friends laugh when he said “Where is my pumpkin? Has Anyone seen my pumpkin?” He was so funny.

My daddy did a lot of things for me, he made my breakfast every morning, he helped me with my homework, he took me to dance and choir practice and to swimming whenever I needed to go. Daddy, you always told me how special I am and how I can be anything I wanted to be that always made me feel good.

Daddy I love you and you will always be in my heart.

Your ‘Pumpkin wunkin’, Hannah

A Tribute to My Brother, Derek

My heart aches. I never imagined that the last time we talked—a few days before your life was cut short—would truly be the last.

You were always kind, thoughtful, well-mannered, respectful, and such a pleasure to be around. It has been a blessing to have you as my brother—especially since you were young enough to be my son. As a child, you shared classes with my daughter, your niece, in both primary and secondary school. I remember attending school meetings and report card days, speaking with your teachers, and collecting your report card alongside hers. It was a joy to do this. You were wise beyond your years.

As the years went by, you often affectionately referred to me as “the First” and yourself as “the Last,” since I am the oldest and you were the youngest. I will miss hearing you say those words—the First and the Last.

You were a great blessing. You offered support when I grieved and always had comforting words. I will miss hearing your voice and the telephone calls, though I am grateful to have some of your voice notes saved on my phone. You were calm and genuine— one of a kind. You were steady, forgiving, and full of love. I love you, and you are painfully missed.

“From the First (Yvonne) to the Last (Derek)

Even in silence, your spirit talks to me reminding me of your greatness. Your light shined in so many places and in some many hearts. Sleep on my brother.

Tribute To My Baby Brother

Thursday October 30th was the saddest day of my life. I received that dreadful call from Gerard that you were murdered. My life came to a halt, and my heart was shattered. Derek, you were the most amazing and talented person I have ever known. You mastered everything you did. Countless days you have spent at my home, playing with my two boys, and to them you were their friend and big brother. Eventually you moved in with us as my protector and bodyguard. Derek, to some you were the world, but to me you were my world. My children think the world of you and to them you were their hero and cool uncle. I will miss your smile, your hugs and witty jokes. I cannot imagine a world without you. Life will be difficult, but God promises that he will never leave us nor forsake us. Sleep on my handsome brother, take your well-deserved rest. You will forever live on in my heart.

Your loving sister Esthermae Swan

Words can not express the feelings we have losing our youngest brother “The Baby “as our dear mother affectionately called you. You were not only a brother but our friend, you inspired us even though you were the youngest. Your memory lives in every heartbeat.

RIP Derek Garcia Love Your brothers: Glen, Rodney, Tony and Gerard

Derek, my son, your death has left me with a heavy heart. Knowing that I will never hear you call me “young man” again seems unimaginable. Your absence has left a hole in my heart, but I will always love you as I have always done. Rest in peace, my son. I look forward to seeing you on the other side.

Dad

A Tribute to Our Brother-in-Law, Derek

(From all your in-laws, with love)

D, we have no words to express how deeply this moment hurts. Our hearts are heavy, and our minds are still trying to understand.

But even in our questions, we choose to trust God.

From day one, you were there, steady, kind, and willing to help. You showed up without hesitation, gave without being asked, and loved your family with quiet strength and a big heart. You were more than a brother-in-law, you were our brother.

We will miss your laughter, your calm presence, and your giving spirit. We’ll miss your thought-provoking conversations and your love for singing. Thank you for every ride, every helping hand, and every moment you made lighter just by being there. Though we don’t understand, we hold on to the truth that God’s ways are higher than ours.

“The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Psalm 34:18

Rest in love, D.

Until we meet again

Ethan & Theresa, Alvin, Wallace & Joyiclyn, Philippe & Cherrise & Khamille

Uncle Derek, thank you for being an extraordinary uncle and an incredible person. You have left an indelible mark on each of our lives. When we think of you, our hearts are full; your laughter, your sense of humour, and your unwavering support can never be replaced.

We are grateful for the countless fond memories of you simply being the amazing uncle you were. The wise and sage advice you shared with us was immeasurable, and the kindness and generosity you showed will remain a source of strength as we come to terms with your untimely passing.

All of us carry stories of your love and support. You will always be our “old young uncle”, mature beyond your years, yet close enough in age to feel like a brother. We admired how you treated each of us with dignity, grace, and respect, even when we disagreed. You made us believe in ourselves, teaching us that with hard work, honour and genuine love for people, the sky was the limit.

Though you are no longer here, your spirit, joy, and approach to life will live on within us. We will continue to look up to you, cherishing the lessons you gave and the love you shared. Shanino

Uncle D,

Thank you for your love, prayers, unwavering support, and memorable golf lessons. You always took genuine interest in our achievements—in music, education, and personal pursuits—and offered sincere encouragement every step of the way. We will forever cherish your quiet strength, gentle spirit, and warm character as we continue to watch over Aunty “C” and the kids.

Until we meet again.

With love, Lekendro, Jermaine, Kameron, Ethan II, Edward & Darnel

Uncle Derek,

You always picked me up for playdates with my cousin Hannah. You loved driving us safely on family trips wherever we needed to go. You had steady hands and would wait patiently.I will miss you, but I know you are in heaven, and we’ll see you later.I promise to always love Hannah, and continue our play dates

Love, Kamaria

Tribute From The Nieces

Words can not describe the pain we are feeling. You were the best uncle a girl could have asked for. You always greeted us with your warm smile and gentle touch. You were blessed with a personality that lit up every room you walked in. We will cherish and appreciate all our memories of you. You were with us for a short time but the impact you left on us is unimageable. You were calm and strong at the same time. During chaos you look forward to the positive outcome. You supported us in everything we did. You were always a phone call away when we needed you. You were an inspiration, and you encouraged us to always do our best and to never give up. Your absence leaves a space that no one can fill and the sadness of losing you runs deep. We will miss you dearly and your legacy will live on. We love you but Jesus loves you best.

From Your Nieces

Tribute from the grandnieces

To our uncle,

To have been blessed with you as an uncle is proof enough to know that we are God’s Favorite girls. Since our parents were so close in age to their last two uncles, they were more like siblings leaving us to be the REAL NIECES. Selfless, Supportive, Loving and Charismatic are few words that could only begin to describe your giant character. We could always count on you to remind us that you had the prettiest nieces in the world. That was your way of always making us feel special, loved, and valued. Though you didn’t speak much your presence in a room was always amplified. Your wisdom, warmth, and humour have shaped so many of our happiest moments. Uncle D, you leaving us has been such a surreal feeling, but we take comfort in knowing your spirit lives on in the love you gave and the lives you touched

With Love, The Pretty Girls (Grandnieces)

I love you so much, and it’s still hard to believe that you’re gone. You meant so much to me, and I’ll always treasure the time I got to spend with you. You carried yourself with so much strength, kindness, and love, and I’ll forever be grateful to have called you my uncle. You will always have a place in my heart.

A Tribute to Derek

When you have worked alongside someone for almost ten years at Dominos, you would have learnt who they really are, and Derek was that individual who worked with purpose. From those early days, he carried out a work ethic that was not just about the job itself; it was about encouraging and uplifting everyone around him to do more and be more. Those of us who worked with him did not just keep up, we thrived because he expected us to.

Over thirty years of friendship, we have walked through many different seasons of life together. I never expected him to ask me to stand as a groomsman at his wedding, but that is who Derek was: he saw potential in people and made them feel like family. Later, when he met my wife and learned she was a Braves fan, she became “sis” from that moment on. That was Derek’s way: he did not just know people, he adopted them.

When I became a member of Pinnacle Seekers Toastmasters Club in 2016, Derek followed shortly after, and we found ourselves working side by side again. And just as we had worked together all those years before, we worked together again this time, setting up Zoom streaming platforms and Public Relations at club meetings and contests when Toastmasters became hybrid. Derek enjoyed throwing technical questions my way to pick my brain, but also to gain a greater knowledge for himself. We worked closely to make sure everything ran smoothly. That partnership felt natural to us; it is what we did, we showed up and got things done together.

I learned quickly never to ignore his calls. If I did not answer, he would show up at my doorstep, not out of annoyance, but because that is what Derek did. He showed up for people.

Our friendship began with a simple “Hey, what’s up?” but evolved into something deeper, the kind of bond that becomes family. Derek taught me that you never know who will change your life or how. What starts as a casual meeting with a coworker can become brotherhood. What matters is treating every connection as a gift and being willing to help a brother out. Derek, thank you for showing up in every way that mattered.

Your Friend & Brother, Ramon
