Obituary

“ Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him and he will make your path straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

On December 25th, 1958, Arlington Bethel and Barbara Ann Cleare-Bethel received the most beautiful Christmas gift, a gift no amount of money can buy, their gift was the birth of their beautiful baby girl they named her “Cornell Alicia”. She was affectionately called “HOLLY.” She was the third of six children born to that union. Holly grew up on Minnie Street and later relocated to Bamboo Boulevard along with her parents and siblings.

Holly received her spiritual education at the Holy Family Catholic Church. She was an active member and attended mass almost every Sunday where she enjoyed her praise and worship.

She received her early education at Claridge Road Primary School, and she attended R.M. Bailey Senior High School where she graduated in 1976.

Holly was a caring and thoughtful person not just to her family but to everyone she met. Her life was full of vibrancy and joy. Her smile and stature could light up any room and it was this love and care for others which led her to pursue her passion. After graduation she joined the Introductory Class (IC-10) at the School of Nursing, which was her dream for as long as she could remember. Upon successfully completing her examinations, she official became a Registered Nurse.

During her tenure in the healthcare system, she performed her duties with excellence, and she was awarded the title of “Midwife.” Holly continued her professional training and she went on to complete her bachelor’s degree and was later promoted to the post of Nursing Officer.

While Holly retired from Nursing in the public service in 2007, she was still passionate about her career and in January 2009, she join Temple Christian Senior High School faculty as their school nurse, a position she would hold until June 2021 when she officially retired from working.

Holly loved her job as a nurse and received gratification from caring for others. Nothing had prepared her for the love and joy she experienced with the birth of her son Blair.

On December 29th, 1990, Holly welcomed her only child, Blair, into the world. Her new passion, and mission was to ensure that her son was raised in a respectable and suitable manner. Many would note that throughout her life, it was just Holly and Blair, a fact which she was quite proud and fond of.

After Holly’s official retirement from working in 2021 she received the good news that she would be blessed with a grandchild. That November, she celebrated the birth of her granddaughter Isabella who became her pride and joy.

Holly became a full-time grandmother and jubilantly offered to become the full-time caregiver for her beloved Bella. She could not imagine her granddaughter spending so much time away from her in a nursery as she wanted to spend as much quality time as possible with her grandchild.

Holly found great joy in not only taking care of Bella, but she enjoyed spending quality time with her family, watching television and going on family vacations.

After retiring, Holly found immense enjoyment in traveling. She vowed to visit as many countries as she could and did an excellent job achieving this goal. She enjoyed being a part of “The Travel Group” as they traveled year-round to distant lands to enjoy themselves and see the world. Besides the many visits to different cities in the U.S.A, she visited countries in Europe such as Estonia, Copenhagen in Denmark, and Nova Scotia in Canada

In October 2024, Holly received the devastating news as she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. However, she did not allow this diagnosis to take over her life, but she was determined and vowed to enjoy the rest of her life no matter what the outcome may be.

While at home she was surrounded by the love of her family and friends. She enjoyed these visits, and she continuously spoke positively and expressed that she was happy and content with how her life had played out. She was never without a smile on her face, never wanting others to worry about her.

Holly lived a life of service to others, her care, compassion and love for family and friends will remain with all those with whom she came in contact. And while we will miss her physical presence, we will all cherish the love and beautiful memories she leaves behind.

On July 17th, with her beloved Blair at her side, God called Holly to be with him. She will be loved forever, never forgotten, and forever missed.

May she rest in eternal peace.

BLESSING OF THE BODY

Priest: I bless + the body of Cornell Alicia Bethel with the holy water that recalls her baptism of which St. Paul writes: All of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death. By baptism into His death, we were buried together with Him, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live a new life. For if we have been united with Him by likeness to His death, so shall we be united with Him by likeness to His resurrection.

Alright Now”

Chorus

It’s alright now, for I am in my Saviour’s care, It’s alright now, my Saviour hears and answers prayer; He’ll walk beside me ‘till I climb the heavenly stair and everything is alright now.

Place the white pall on the casket | (In remembrance of our baptismal garments a white pall shall be placed over the mortal remains of Cornell Alicia Bethel) | Dierdre Fox and Laurie Fenton (Sisters)

ENTRANCE

HYMN | “It’s Alright Now”

And down a lonely pathway, without a friend to guide, I walked in sin and sorrow all alone. ‘Till Jesus came and found me, and drew me to his side, It’s alright now, for I’m his own.

No more in sin I wander, no more in darkness roam. The Lord has placed my feet on higher ground, Each day new height I’m gaining, my soul is nearing home, It’s alright now, I’m heaven bound.

CEREMONY OF THE PASCHAL CANDLE

Priest: Behold the light of Christ. People: Thanks be to God.

RECESSIONAL HYMN | “Jerusalem the Golden”

Jerusalem the golden, with milk and honey blest, beneath thy contemplation sink heart and voice oppressed. I know not, ah, I know not what joys await us there, what radiancy of glory, what bliss beyond compare.

They stand, those halls of Sion, all jubilant with song, and bright with many an angel, and all the martyr throng; the prince is ever in them, the daylight is serene; the pastures of the blessed are decked in glorious sheen.

RITE OF COMMITTAL

There is the throne of David; and there, from care released, the shout of them that triumph, the song of them that feast; and they, who with their leader have conquered in the fight, for ever and for ever are clad in robes of white.

O sweet and blessed country, the home of God’s elect! O sweet and blessed country that eager hearts expect! Jesus, in mercy bring us to that dear land of rest; who art, with God the Father and Spirit, ever blest.

+ AT THE CEMETERY +

Priest: Let us pray:

Our sister Cornell Alicia Bethel has gone to her rest in the peace of Christ. May the Lord now welcome her to the table of God’s children in heaven!

With faith and hope in eternal life, let us assist her with our prayers.

Let us pray to the Lord also for ourselves. May we who mourn be reunited one day with our sister; together may we meet Christ Jesus when he who is our life appears in glory.

Priest: We read in Sacred Scripture: “Come, you who are blessed by my Father, says the Lord, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.”

PRAYERS OVER THE GRAVE

Priest: Lord Jesus Christ, by your own three days in the tomb, you hallowed the graves of all who believe in you and so made the grave a sign of hope that promises resurrection even as it claims our mortal bodies.

Grant that our sister may sleep here in peace until you awaken her to glory, for you are the resurrection and the life. Then she will see you face to face and in your light will see light and know the splendour of God, for you live and reign for ever and ever.

People: Amen.

Priest: People:

By Your coming as man

By Your birth.

By Your baptism and fasting.

By Your suffering and Cross.

Lord, save your people.

Lord, save your people.

Lord, save your people.

Lord, save your people. By Your death and burial.

Lord, save your people. By Your rising to new life.

By Your return in glory to the Father.

By Your gift of the Holy Spirit.

By Your coming again in Glory.

COMMITTAL

Lord, save your people.

Lord, save your people.

Gravesite Hymns

In The Garden

I come to the garden alone.

While the dew is still on the roses; And the voice I hear, falling on my ear

The son of God discloses.

And he walks with me, And he talks with me,

And he tells me I am his own,

And the joy we share as we tarry there

None other has ever known.

He speaks and the sound of His voice is so sweet the birds hush their singing; And the melody that He gave to me

Within my heart is ringing.

And he walks with me, And he talks with me,

And he tells me I am his own,

And the joy we share as we tarry there

None other has ever known.

I’d stay in the garden with Him, Though the night all around me is falling;

But He bids me go.

Through the voice of woe, His voice to me is calling.

And he walks with me, And he talks with me,

And he tells me I am his own,

And the joy we share as we tarry there

None other has ever known.

And the joy we share as we tarry there

None other has ever known.

Glad Reunion Day

There will be a happy meeting in Heaven, I know

When we see the many loved ones we’ve known here below

Gathered on that blessed hilltop with hearts all aglow That will be a glad reunion day

A glad day, a wonderful day Glad day, a glorious day There with all the holy angels and loved ones to stay That will be a glad reunion day.

When we live a million years in that wonderful place

Basking in the love of Jesus, beholding His face It will seem but just a moment of praising God’s grace That will be a glad reunion day

A glad day, a wonderful day Glad day, a glorious day

There with all the holy angels and loved ones to stay That will be a glad reunion day.

There are no words that can fully capture the depth of a mother’s love—or the pain of losing her. Mommy you truly were a representation of my heart. You taught me strength, perseverance, comfort, and endless love. You continuously taught me how to be kind, strong, and how to keep going, no matter the circumstances.

You weren’t just my mother, but you were my friend, a protector, a teacher, and a light in all of our lives. Your laughter could brighten anyone’s day. Your hugs provided comfort, and your presence was something that I could continuously lean on.

In the midst of this grief, I still feel your presence. I feel you in the decisions I make, the love I give and the memories that linger on. It pains me that Isabella won’t get to grow up experiencing the same. However, I will surely let your love shine through me and ensure she remembers her Grandmother in every way I possibly can.

Mommy, I thank you for everything. The sacrifices you made, the love you poured into my life, and the quiet strength you carried s your endured through it all. You will always live on in me, in my heart, the endless stories, and in the way I live my life.

Rest in peace my sweet Holly. I will love you always.

Your son, Blair.

To My Dear Sister Holly,

To my dear sister Holly I am missing you friend. I miss the laughter as we reflect on the past whenever we spoke. Your death hurt me so bad I cannot tell when was the last time I felt such sadness. I miss you laughing when I called you ‘Miss Prissy’ that was my secret name for you (lol) I know you are looking over my shoulder as I’m writing this, because you found humor as I described the reasoning behind that name. I know you are showing the angels in Heaven how to be cute, classy, and a lady, because you are all that. You always cared to ask me about my children and you always said they will be alright. I often told you what a great job you did with Blair as a single parent. Congratulations again on a job well done. You did a great job orchestrating everything when Mommy needed assistance, thanks sis. Thanks for the sisterhood, friendship, and kindness always. We love you, but God loves you best. You will always remain in our hearts, mind, and soul. Chardonnay, Rohan, Jr., Rashad, and Khambrell. With you it is never goodbye, I will say talk to you later.

TO MY DEAR SWEET PRECIOUS SISTER, HOLLY

I miss you so much. We will no longer have long conversations of our days events and concerns about our lives.

We will no longer take vacations and adventures together. But, I hold onto the memories of our travels over the years to Copenhagen, Tallinn Estonia, Boston, Netherlands Denmark. Visiting the Fairview Lawn cemetery of the Titanic victims at Halifax, Nova Scotia. Also, and strolling through the cannabis cafes of Amsterdam where we almost got high on the smoke (haha) and decided to walk slowly.

You have been my confidant, my friend and the person to discuss whatever was troubling me with. Holly, you were the person I would share a good belly shaking laugh.

Ahhh, and the craziness of childhood. Like the time when we decided that we would beat up somebody and got scared. God is good.

Take your rest Holly, God decided that you have had enough on this earth. You grew Blair up to be a true officer and a gentleman, my third son, you called me Blair’s’ other mother.

Oh sweet memories of our time in London at the Royal Naval Academy witnessing

Blairs’ graduation and sharing that experience with you crying tears of happiness and joy along with mummy and LaTia. Watching Prince Charles (now king) chatting with Blair.

I love you dearly Holly your sister forever.

SO MANY WORDS BUT SPEECHLESS ALL THE SAME…

Sad that you’re not here, but happy you’re no longer in pain

Your beauty unmatched but not vain.

Although it hurts you’re now free to soar without limits

God heard your cries and said I will end it

Your light will not be dimmed even through the years

Someway we will still smile through the bitter tears

An inspiration and pillar of strength

Oh if I could bring back, I would go to any lengths

Sweet and precious memories flood my mind like rain

Holding on to them so tight, so they always remain the same

We love you always, but God loves you best,

Go head sweet Aunt Holly take your everlasting rest.

Love you with all my heart,

Your niece, Latia

A Tribute to my Cousin Holly.

Holly, I accept God’s will for your life but humanly speaking, my heart aches because of your passing.

Over the years, you became more that a cousin. You became a friend, confidante, nursing colleague and mentor. Growing up, we didn’t interact often but every time we met, it was a loving interaction.

When I entered the nursing profession, you had a positive impact on me and many of my colleagues, as our senior. Your kind, patient, accommodating and positive demeanor was just what a group of curious, nervous, new nursing students and sick patients needed and I dare to add, some of your superiors. Thanks for your support and mentorship.

Thanks for also encouraging me to take on the challenge of becoming a school nurse after taking on the challenge yourself several years earlier. It certainly was the right decision for me. This made our bond even stronger and we confided in each other more and more.

Your kindness and support of me even went beyond your retirement. You opted to be a substitute nurse for me at very critical times. You performed with the same excellence as before your retirement, this was no surprise. You were a “Nurse Extraordinaire!”

Learning of your illness was devastating for me but seeing you fight with such positivity, faith and trust in God and accepting His will was no surprise.

Your quiet, peaceful passing was certainly in keeping with your personality, this made it easier to bear.

I carry precious memories of the times we spent together, spoke on the phone and messaged each other, especially over the last year, but I still miss you and will always love you.

Until We Meet Again! Cousin Jan Bridgewater.

A Tribute to My Dearest Friend, Holly

It is with a heavy heart and deep gratitude that I think about the wonderful life of my beloved friend, Holly. For many years, she was not just a friend, but a guiding light and a cherished mentor.

Our connection was clear and strong, formed in the early 1980s on the busy maternity ward at Princess Margaret Hospital. She was the calm and professional midwife in charge, and I, a student nurse eager to learn. Holly always had an immaculate appearance, her uniform was always sparkling white and she was very neat. I admired her carefulness and dedication, and she taught me very helpful lessons that helped my career and my life.

Beyond the hospital, our bond grew stronger through many happy times. We shared laughter over lunches, danced at parties, and went on memorable adventures. Our travels together were always a highlight, with our most recent being an amazing cruise to Alaska in 2023. These shared experiences are treasures I will forever hold dear.

Holly and I were more than friends; we were family. Our connection was so deep that she let me use her own wedding handpiece for my wedding, a sign of great love and trust. She became the godmother to my daughter, Indira, and I had the privilege of becoming godmother to her son, Blair. I will always remember the many times I came over to her house and we would talk and talk while the children played.

Thank you, Holly, for your strong loyalty, your true friendship, and for simply being you. I will miss you more than words can express.

With all my love, Kayla
