Mesa Community College Men's Basketball 2021-22 Coaching Staff Interim Head Coach Jimmy Herrera Prior to the 2021-22 season, Coach Herrera was promoted to interim head coach after the retirement of Head Coach Sam Ballard. After coaching for 12 years in California, Jimmy Herrera accepted the assistant coaching position with the Thunderbirds Men's Basketball Team. Coach Herrera brings in 12 years of coaching experince in the California Community College system, with 11 of those years at Foothill College as the associate head coach. At Foothill, Coach Herrera has experienced a wealth of success as the associate head coach. During his tenure, the Foothill Owls have made the Final Eight twice and have had four top-10 finishes in the state of California. As the lead recruiter, Coach Herrera helped recruit and develop six AllState players. Jimmy Herrera grew up in Morgan Hill, CA and attended Live Oak High School. He was an AllLeague player in basketball and was his high school's athlete of the year. He then studied and continued his basketball career at Gavilan College. There he was an All-League player and earned his AA degree. Herrera transfered to UC-Santa Cruz largely in part by receiving the Karl S. Pister Leadership Opportunity Award Scholarship. At UCSC, he earned his B.S. in Biology and was awarded 2nd and 1st Team All-American Independent Honors. Herrera finished his education at San Jose State University and earned his M.A. in Kinesiology. He believes he has attended two schools with the top mascots in the country: The Live Oak High School Acorns and the UCSC Banana Slugs!

Assistant Coach Lester Neal Lester Neal is in his first season as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Mesa Community College. Lester was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois and he attended Dunbar Vocational High School where he was a stellar athlete. Lester went on to play basketball at Ventura College located in Ventura, California. While at Ventura Lester became a two-time conference MVP, First Team All-State player, Juco All-American and a 2009 Inductee into the Ventura College Hall of Fame. During the 2019 season, Lester was Inducted into the California Community College Men’s Basketball Hall of Fame. Lester transferred to Arizona State University to play basketball under Bill Frieder during the 1991-1993 seasons. In 1993, Lester was the Pac-10s Leading Rebounder. Following his senior campaign Lester became the first recipient of the Lester Neal “Warrior Award”; an award created in his honor by his coaches for his leadership, work ethic and dedication. The award was given to players seasons after him. In the fall of 1993 Lester realized his dream was coming true as he began embarking on what would be a ten-year professional basketball career playing throughout Europe, Asia and South America. Following his professional basketball career, Lester earned his degree from Arizona State University and established a new career working with youth and families from low-income communities in Arizona. His love for basketball began calling him and Coach Neal (as he affectionately likes to be called) began developing his coaching skills with his own AAU program, the Arizona HYPE. He then went on to spend three seasons coaching at Scottsdale Community College and three seasons coaching at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Prior to Mesa, Coach Neal spent the past three seasons coaching at his alma mater Ventura College where the team completed their first undefeated conference schedule since 2008 and its fifth consecutive Western Conference Championship. Coach Neal has experienced success in basketball and coaching at every level and he is looking forward to a stellar season and bringing his unique talents to the Mesa Community College Mens Basketball team.
