So again we’re left being very excited about a new Apple product but disappointed that we can’t buy and use it as intended with full support in our own markets.

The Apple world has gone crazy again. Of course I’m talking about the introduction of the iPhone 3G. It’s arrived in the selected markets where it’s sold, which as you know does not include most of the Middle East. That’s a shame but I’m not sure who to blame for that. Is it Apple, local telecomm companies, or governments in the region? Whichever is true doesn’t really matter to us who would like to get the new generation iPhone to our markets. The simple fact remains that many of us are left bewildered, confused, and frustrated over the absence of this particular Apple product. Sure, we can eventually buy it, unlock it, and use it here but it’ll be like with the first generation, with the problems with no support, no warranty, etc. So again we’re left being very excited about a new Ap-

ple product but disappointed that we can’t buy and use it as intended with full support in our own markets. Rumors have it, some has been reported in the press, that Etisalat, Apple, and the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) in the UAE have had meetings about the iPhone, but no agreement has been reached. Personally I don’t see what the problem is, but as stated earlier for us consumers it doesn’t really matter. Now all we can hope for is that at some point in the future. Last year I was told by a telecommunications industry insider that iPhone would be launched here in January 2008. He knew this from reliable sources, he said, but obviously that didn’t pan out. Perhaps I should ask the same guy what he would predict this time: 2009, 2010, later?

More Reviews You know I’ve been reading Shuffle for a while now and you’re doing a great thing for the region. There is no other publication like it and I keep pointing people to it all the time. Well done. What I’d like to see is more reviews and more detailed ones and especially covering local products and how they work here. Thanks.

Thanks for the kind words. We are like you very interested in detailed reviews, which can guide users through the jungle of products available today. One problem is we rely on companies sending us review samples, something they’re not that interested in, it seems. We’re also with you the point of more local connections in reviews, and it’s something we’re working on. -Editor

Why Mac? A friend gave me an old copy of Shuffle and I flicked through it. I’ve used Macs but never saw much point. Man they’re expensive and they lock you in to just Apple stuff. Why get a Mac? Tell me because I don’t get it.

It’s hard to explain to someone without them using a Mac at the same time and following Apple news. But those of us who are Mac fans generally believe that Apple is offering a better solution than the alternatives. It’s a better user experience, better security, better productivity, but also more fun. And whether it’s more expensive is a somewhat relative term, which could be discussed at length. We’d suggest you keep on reading Shuffle to find out what it’s all about. -Editor

Mac Models 101 Selecting what Mac to buy can sometimes be daunting, especially if you’re new to Macs. Therefore we put together this short guide to the different models of Macintosh computers currently on offer from Apple. This guide only offers some brief pointers. To evaluate what you should buy, we advice you spend some time with the Mac in a store.

MacBook Air The MacBook Air is definitely the ultimate Mac in terms of portability. But even though it weighs in at about 1kg, it’s no lightweight in terms of performance. With a processor from 1.6GHz, 2GB RAM, and 80GB hard drive it should perform most tasks with east. An external SuperDrive is optional.Price: from AED8199.

MacBook The main attraction of the MacBook is obviously its size. It has a 13.3-inch display which has enough resolution for most things (but is limited for tasks such as design), a Core2Duo processor of up to 2.2GHz, RAM up to 4GB, and a hard drive up to 250GB. The MacBook is a lot of power in a small package. If mobility is your primary concern, this is your choice. Price: from AED4999.

MacBook Pro For the technology you can find inside them, the MacBook Pros are surprisingly compact. But no one can say that the 17-inch model is light and easy to transport. The 15-inch model is slightly smaller, and both sport a gorgeous, large display. It has up to 2.6GHz Core2Duo processors, 4GB or RAM, and 250GB of hard drive. If its power and large screens you want, MacBook Pro is your choice. Price: from AED7999.

Mac mini The introductory model, petite as it is, still packs quite a punch. Don’t take its small size as a sign that it’s slow. It comes with a Core2Duo processor of up to 2.0GHz, which is plenty for most things you’d want to do. It can also take up to 2GB RAM and 160GB hard drive as well as a SuperDrive. Its limitation lies in that it’s very hard to upgrade, and it has integrated Intel graphics, so don’t expect to play the latest 3D games on a mini. Price: from AED2699.

iMac The ultimate home desktop computer, the iMac is the all-in-one that packs a punch. You can get a 20 or 24-inch screen, up to 3.06GHz, up to 4GB of RAM, and 1TB of hard drive. The iMac’s selling point is the integrated package, which also happens to look really awesome. Price: from AED6199.

For the ultimate in power and flexibility, you can’t beat Mac Pro but it’s not cheap. You can get it up to an eightcore configuration, 16GB RAM, four 750GB hard drives, and two optical drives. You also have a selection when it comes to graphics card. Price: from AED11999.

Mac Pro

iPod Models 101 As with buying a Mac, selecting what iPod to buy is not always easy. In every issue of Shuffle we present the current models of Apple’s iPods, what their main features are, and the starting price. Hopefully this can serve as a simple and quick guide to the iPods so you can make a more informed buying decision.

iPod Touch This is iPhone without the phone. You get wifi for web browsing with Safari, full-featured iPod of course for music and video, and the wonderful iPhone multitouch interface. Comes in 8GB and 16GB versions Price: from AED1399.

iPod Classic

iPod Nano Available in different colors, the Nano is the ultimate fashion accessory. With a wonderfully crisp display it can play video and the small size means you can slip it into your pocket and take it anywhere. Comes in 4GB and 8GB versions in five different colors. Price: from AED649.

This is the iPod we have known and loved for so many years, hence the name Classic. With a large display, plenty of storage space, this is still the king of the iPods even though many new models have been released. Comes in versions of 80GB and 160GB and is available in silver and black. Price: from AED1199.

iPod Shuffle This miniscule iPod is different from the other iPods not just in terms of size and price but in the fact that it has no display. The idea is that you listen to music on the go and it shuffles through the songs. There’s even an handy feature in iTunes that will always put a different combination of songs on it when you sync. Price: AED329.

Apple TV Although it’s not an iPod we present it here as it seems Apple feels the Apple TV is in the same family. With 40GB or 160GB storage capacity, the Apple TV can take all your music, podcasts, and movies. The multimedia can be synchronized from one iTunes library on a Mac or PC, or streamed from up to five other computers. It’s the easiest way to get your multimedia content onto a TV. Price: from AED1399.

iPhone Hints And Tips

Force quit

Sometimes a program stalls and locks up. And nothing you do will make a difference to it. You push the Home button but nothing happens. “What can I do?” you ask. Click and hold the home button until that program works, and you regain control of your iPhone again.

How to restart There comes a time in a phone’s life where it just acts like a tantrum prone teenager and it won’t do what it’s told. Push and hold both the Home and Power buttons until the phone shuts down.

Choose Your Headphones Something very annoying about the iPhone is that it forces you to use the supplied headphones. If you don’t like them, tough!! Anything else won’t go into the socket, because it is recessed. This has changed in iPhone 3G but if you have the original model, well you don’t really have to live with that. Many companies offer solutions that offer headphone adapters that allow you to choose the headphone you want. Look at Belkin, Griffin, and Monster among others. Keep in mind, these usually don’ resolve the mic and remote.

The iPod that lives inside the iPhone Remember that the iPhone is still an iPod. And it has the iPod connector. This means the majority of accessories made for the iPod will also work on an iPhone. Some may ask you to disable the phone feature to improve sound quality, but that only applies to the static that happens when you make or receive a call. As far as chargers and cables are concerned they are the same. But some video accessories won’t work on the iPhone. iWeb: a Quick Overview Media Browser: Find your photos, movies, and music and just drag it into your iWeb site.

The left sidebar shows what pages you have in your web site. Click and drag them to rearrange their order.

To create a new page within your site, click on the plus button and pick what type of page you want to create.

If you have a MobileMe account, one click with the mouse on the Publish button prepares the iWeb site for publishing to the web and uploads it to the internet.

Once published, you can click on the Visit button to see what your site looks like online.

iWeb is perhaps one of the least known applications in Apple’s iLife suite. That shouldn’t stop you from looking at it for web design as it is a rather competent application with lots of functionality. iWeb is a great choice for most users who just want a simple tool for putting together and maintaining a web site.

In the Inspector, click the icons at the top to switch between pages with different controls.

The Inspector window gives you access to lots of settings and functionality. Including setting the site’s name, RSS feed, text format, etc.

Also in the Inspector it shows you how much space you have left on your iDisk. This can help you keep an eye on storage space as you develop your site.

Include Flash Flash is a great thing for animation and interactivity. Publish the Flash movie and upload the SWF file to the iWeb site’s folder on your MobileMe account. Take the HTML code from the published HTML file, change the path to the SWF file if necessary, and put that code into your iWeb HTML Snippet.

At the top left you will find buttons for creating a new page, editing an existing page, and previewing a page. In the left sidebar you see a list of all the pages you have in your site. Doubleclick on one of them to open it for editing.

You can publish your web site to FTP account or .Mac (MobileMe). Once it’s set up you can publish with one click of the mouse.

At the bottom left you find buttons for creating and deleting pages, as well as other functions for individual pages, such as export and publishing.

When editing a blog post, you will find editing controls at the bottom of the main part of the RapidWeaver window.

If you feel you’ve outgrown iWeb, RapidWeaver is a really good choice. It is more configurable, creates nice looking sites, but is still easy to work with. You can get it from http://www.realmacsoftware.com.

This button publishes your web site to FTP or MobileMe.

The Page Info button opens the Page Inspector window where you control settings for an individual page in your site.

When you edit a blog page, you get the controls for a blog post. Here you can type in title, publishing date, categories, tags, etc.

Click the different buttons at the top of the Page Inspector window to change view with different options.

Each page in the Page Inspector has controls, which pertain to that particular page. This is the Setup window where you can set a number of parameters for the entire site, such as title, contact email address, etc.

3 cups apple juice or cider 3 cups boiling water 6 tea bags 1/3 cup honey 1 tsp. allspice Apple slices, cut in circles, to garnish (optional)

Add tea bags to boiling water. Let stand 15 minutes. Remove and add allspice, honey and apple juice. Simmer over low heat until honey is blended, about one minute. Chill. Serve over ice with lemon, lime or apple slices.

Adobe DreamWeaver CS3 is a very powerful application for pretty much any aspect of web design and development. Much of the work you will do with DreamWeaver, if you’re going to create web pages and sites with it, will become easier if you set up a site in DreamWeaver in which you keep all the files for that particular site. In this tutorial we show you how to set up a site in DreamWeaver in order to make your future web development work easier. We assume you use MAMP (http://www. mamp.info) for developing and perhaps deploying the site in this tutorial. I’d like to thank a group of students at SAE, Dubai, who helped me refine this tutorial.

After you start DreamWeaver, click on the sites drop-down menu in the File panel (press F8 if you don’t see it) and click on Manage Sites.

Click on the New button and in the drop-down that appears, click on Site.

Give your site a name and type in a complete URL for your site, in our example “http://localhost/shuffle/”. Remember this last part, “shuffle”.

If you’re using a server technology, such as PHP, click the Yes button and select the technology in the drop-down.

Click Edit and test locally. Then click the small folder icon.

Now you need to find (or create) a folder in the MAMP\htdocs folder which as the same name as the last part of the URL in Step 3 (in our example “shuffle”).

Q: Last week I got a new iMac with Office 2008. I want to write some Arabic but it doesn’t seem to work. What can I do? A: I’m certainly no expert at Arabic but I believe Office 2008 does not support Arabic, at least not Word. To write Arabic on Mac OS X you have a few options. I’d suggest you start with OpenOffice.org. It’s an excellent office suite and it’s free. You can get it from http://www. openoffice.org/. There is an early test version of the upcoming OpenOffice.org 3.0 and it’s much improved. If you’ve installed Office and want to use OpenOffice you will have to remove some fonts that were installed by Office. Remove all Arial and Times New Roman fonts from the /Library/Fonts folder. You also want to look in ~/Library/Fonts/ (the Library folder in your home directory) and if there are any of those fonts there, remove them too. After those fonts are gone, you should be able to write Arabic without problems in OpenOffice.

Q: I am doing some web development with my Mac and my teacher showed me MAMP ( http://www. mamp.info). I’ve created a site in Dreamweaver and I try to set up a database connection but it won’t work and when I try to access the site in a browser I get this error in the browser that the page cannot be loaded. What’s up? A: Without seeing your actual setup it’s hard to tell, but I would advice you check two things. First, make sure Web Sharing is turned off (System Preferences > Sharing). Second, in the MAMP control panel, set the ports for Apache and MySQL to the standard ones (80 for Apache and 3306 for MySQL). To do this, click on Preferences, then Ports tab, and click on Set to default Apache and MySQL ports button. That should fix the problem. If it still doesn’t work, try restarting your Mac, and try again.

Q: I just got my friend’s old iPod and it has his name on it, you know in iTunes. I want to put my name on it, how do I do that? A: Easiest way is to connect the iPod to your Mac, wait until iTunes recognizes it, and then just click on the iPod’s name in the left sidebar and type in the new name for the iPod. It’s really that easy.

various parts around the world we found out we had a UAE iTunes Store. Sure it’s not for movies, TV and music, at least not yet, but it’s a start. The only thing you can access so far in the UAE iTunes Store is applications and games for iPhone and iPod Touch, in other words the AppStore. The software update for the iPhone and iPod Touch has been out for some time now and I’m sure many of you have upgraded already. But for those who haven’t, the question is, is it worth it? I’ve been asked by a few people so I thought I’d try to answer it in this article. First of all, remember there was an update for the Touch back in January? If you paid for the $20 iPod Touch update in January you might be a bit upset now since that update is rolled into the new 2.0 update. So in a sense you’re paying for the same thing twice. This includes Google Maps, Mail, Weather, Web Clips, Stocks and more. So what’s new in the iPod Touch update? It’s really much the same as the iPhone, and you probably know most of those details already. The two main new things are Mobile Me support and the AppStore. With Mobile Me you

Since the AppStore now is available in the Middle East (see separate article in this issue) you can buy your apps with a UAE credit card, for example. The selection of apps is growing all the time and many of them are available for free.

Among the other new things you will find updated language and keyboard support, searchable contacts, a calculator with different modes, support for more types of e-mail attachments (iWork and PowerPoint files), mass delete and moving of e-mail messages, parental controls, and you can now take a screenshot of the iPod Touch’s screen. Individually these new features may not make you jump for joy in excitement but taken together they make for a much improved user experience.

One app that stands out from the AppeStore’s selection is the Remote app. It adds remote control functionality of iPod Touch after the upgrade. Basically this means it will let you control an AppleTV or iTunes library remotely over a Wi-Fi connection. This works really well and will alone be worth the $10 upgrade fee for some users. So is the iPod Touch 2.0 upgrade worth $10? Your experience may vary but I say it’s money well spent.

Performance

There are two main configurations in terms of processors in the Mac Pro. You can get a quad-core model with a 2.8HGz processor or an eight-core model with two processors ranging from 2.8GHz to 3.2GHz.

Memory The Mac Pro is the most expandable Mac in Apple’s lineup, not just in terms of memory. It can accommodate eight slots of 800MHz DDR2 ECC fully buffered DIMM, supporting up to 32GB of total memory.

Communications Standard on the Mac Pro are two 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet ports and Bluetooth 2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate (EDR). You can also add 802.11n AirPort Extreme wireless networking and external Apple USB Modem.

Mac Pro Display and Graphics

With the full-size expansion slot you can put almost whatever graphics you want in the Mac Pro. The options from Apple include ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT with 256MB of memory, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with 512MB of memory, and NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 with 1.5GB of memory.

Storage The Mac Pro has four 3.5-inch hard drive bays. Combined they can supply up to 4TB of internal hard drive capacity. There are also two slots for SuperDrives.

Expandability Mac Pro supports three open fulllength PCI Express expansion slots, which should be enough for even the most demanding situations.

Publish a Web Page With Word 2008 Microsoft Word has been a good web publishing application for many versions now. In fact, Excel and PowerPoint can also publish to the web. I wouldn’t recommend it for a commercial web site for a company, but for occasional single pages, it’s not bad. In the 2008 version Microsoft included a new function, the Web Layout, which makes it even easier to create designs for web pages. By Magnus Nystedt

Create your document and consider carefully how you want it to appear on the web. Remember what works in print doesn’t always work on the web.

You can work away normally in Word, but if you switch to the Web Layout mode you will find it easier to create nice web pages. You switch mode by going to View > Web Layout.

If you type in a hyperlink, e.g. “http://www.emiratesmac.com” and hit enter, Word will recognize it as a hyperlink and make it blue and underlined. If you need to edit a hyperlink, right-click on it and select Hyperlink > Edit Hyperlink.

When you’re happy with your web page, go to File > Save as Web page.

In the dialog box that opens, click the Web Options button. Here you can enter a title for the page and keywords. Click the OK button and then the Save button.

Now you can upload your web page to a server so it’s published online.

The best part of that whole summer was that I started using a Mac.

When I started using Macs the concept of “switcher” didn’t exist. It was back in 1986 – yes, I’m showing my age here – and I was working for the summer at a factory. I was in high school and studied electrical engineering and I had managed to get a nice summer gig basically sitting in an office, playing with a PC, and doing some programming. My main job was doing some customization to one of their databases and it was on one of those plain, beige PCs and this was pre-Windows days so it was just textbased DOS all the way. That job was a really good experience and I learned a lot but the best part of that whole summer was that I started using a Mac.

At the office there was a Mac Plus collecting dust in a corner. It was just sitting there, next to an ImageWriter printer, and I don’t think anyone used it all summer that I can remember at least. I’d never used a Mac but I turned it on one day, checked out the manuals, and started using MacWrite and MacPaint all day long, printed my creations on the ImageWriter, and played long hours of Dark Castle. I still remember what the bats sounded likewhen you hit them with the rocks.

After a little time I even started programming the Mac. There was some Pascal version on it and that was so exciting, making the Mac Plus do different things. So I wasn’t a Switcher really, I was a Beginner. Some time after the Mac Plus experience I bought my first Mac, a IIcx, and it’s not really stopped since then with the Macs. Back then, DOS was amazing to me, the things I could make that computer do. But the Mac was just in another league. For the recent switchers, try to imagine a small 9-inch black and white display (512×384 pixels) and booting and running from one floppy drive. What was so different was the whole experience. Apple seemed to care about every little detail, they seemed to want to make it fun and creative to use a computer. So that was my story of how I started using a Mac. Now tell us yours.
