Wow, we made it through 2009. Actually, with 2009 behind us, we can look back at the first full calendar year in Shufflegazine’s short history. Completing the year in any venture is special, but starting out the January issue again is something very unique for anybody who’s been involved in this kind of publishing. Every issue of the magazine is a small project in and of itself, and we work hard at making each issue better than the one before. Now with 2010 extending like a blank canvas before us, we look forward to filling each month with new and exciting Apple-related content. For example, we will be reporting from CES in Las Vegas on our website, and you will find more coverage in next month’s issue. Next, a reborn Mac World Expo will take place, and although we are not sure we can report live from there, we are sure there will be many stories to cover. And, of course, throughout the year there will be product launches and other news, like brush strokes on our canvas. There are many things we want to improve on in the coming year. Among the most important for us is our coverage of news and events from around the Middle East. Yes, we are based in Dubai, but we really do want to report about what’s happening from around the region to readers of our magazine, as well as of the website. Since we do not have offices and reporters in other countries we rely on readers like you to let us know what’s happening. If you know of an upcoming event, product launch, or something else newsworthy and interesting, please let us know. With such contributions from the community, we can make Shufflegazine an even better publication, one that we can all be proud of.

Sony PlayStation 15 years old Sony PlayStation has turned 15 years old, and they’ve set up a special web site to celebrate this fact. Go Green is a competition inspired by the environment around us, of which the winning entries are perfect examples. Apple acquires music-streaming service Lala It's been reported that Apple Inc. has acquired online music service lala.com. With lala.com, users can set up free accounts and sample songs. To add a song to a «collection», really a playlist, users pay 10 cents per song, which includes unlimited listening. Users can also purchase MP3 downloads of the songs and
upload songs from their computers to add to the online collection. Lala.com is a US-only service and it's not know at this stage what Apple intends to do with lala. com and the engineers and intellectual property they've acquired.

du invests in next generation 3G technology Hoping to be able to provide faster 3G mobile data services to its customers, du has announced that starting in 2010 they will upgrade their 3G and EDGE network to HSPA+ technology in a partnership with Huawei. Huawei will invest $85 million in the upgrade, which will increase top speeds to 21 Mbps from the current 7.2 Mbps. In the press release, Hatem Bamatraf, Senior Vice President, Network Development, du, said “The high-speed HSPA+ technology will usher in a new era for mobile broadband, making a vast range of applications and services available to consumers on-the-go. Starting next year, du customers will enjoy a nearly 200% increase in mobile bandwidth, making downloading, uploading and other online activities faster and easier than ever.”

Google Chrome now in beta version for Mac Whether you think you need another web browser or not, Google’s Chrome browser continues to develop and has recently been made available in a beta version for Mac. Since it’s a beta it’s still under development, so it will contain bugs and not all functionality will be present. Chrome focuses on security, speed, and stability. The browser features a simplistic user interface, where, for example, the location bar (where you type a URL) and the search box are combined into one text field. It comes as no surprise that Chrome runs web applications that rely heavily on Javascript, like Gmail and Google Docs, very well. Google wants users to run applications in their web browser, rather than in the tradition way in the desktop operating system. To make this a more realistic proposition Google Chrome runs each web page as its own process, so if, for example, Flash crashes on one page, it only affects that page not the entire web browser. Google Chrome requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later and an Intel processor. You can download it from google.com/chrome.

du introduced VOD Video On Demand service On December 20, 2009, du, the Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company, started offering the first Video On Demand (VOD) service in the UAE. The service allows du TV customers to basically rent a movie of their choice and view it as many times as they like in a 48 hour period. It’s like renting a DVD from a store except you don’t have to go to the store, it’s all done in the convenience of your own home. Using the remote control, you select which movie to rent and as soon as you’ve confirmed, the movie is available for watching. You can pause, fast-forward, rewind, as you would do with a DVD. This is currently available to around 25,000 du TV customers. As the talks between TRA (Telecommunications Regulatory Authority), Etisalat and du continue about opening up each operator’s network for use by the other, customers currently not in areas covered by du should eventually be able to choose du’s TV and other services. Farid Faraidooni, Executive Vice President Corporate Affairs, du, said “we’re discussing how we can share infrastructure so that we can roll out these exciting services to the rest of the UAE.” A variety of movies will be available for renting. At the launch on December 20, around 100 movies in the Arabic cinema, Hollywood and Bollywood categories will be available. Du expects this to reach 1,000 movies at the end of the first quarter 2010. The price of renting one movie ranges from AED7 to 19, with the most recent releases and HD (High Definition) movies costing the most.

In early November Vodafone in Qatar issued a statement saying, “Vodafone Qatar and Apple have reached an agreement to bring iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS... to Qatar in the coming months.” As of December 11 they are selling iPhone 3GS in Qatar. Prices are: QAR2,399 for iPhone 3G 8GB, QAR2,999 for iPhone 3GS 16GB and QAR3,499 for the 32GB version of iPhone 3GS. This means iPhone 3GS is a bit more expensive in Qatar compared to UAE. Security expert says his wife uses a Mac and she's never had a virus
خبير األمن التكنولوجي يعلن بأن زوجته لم تعاني من أي »فيروس على حاسبها «ماك
Bruce Schneier, world-renowned security expert, attended the Summit of the Global Agenda, part of the World Economic Forum, in Dubai and spoke to reporters about the current state of computer security. Schneier, Chief Security Technology Officer of BT (British Telecom) said that one big topic in terms of the Internet and security, during the summit, had been cloud computing. He said that cloud computing is happening no matter if we hate it or not. “The economics are so powerful… that it’s going to happen,” he said. When asked if it matters anymore what operating system a user runs on their computer, Schneier revealed that his wife uses a Mac. Schneier said “Microsoft is the big target, so the bad guys tend to target them because you get more bang for your buck by writing a Windows worm than an Apple worm. My wife uses a Macintosh and she laughs at all the security vulnerabilities because she doesn’t have any; she’s never had a virus. Stores across the UAE sell our favorite devices, and you can find them at very attractive prices if you look around. However, price is only one thing to consider when evaluating what you purchase. Even if you are happy with how much you paid for that new MacBook, you want to continue to be happy long after you’ve opened the box and booted it up.

Many of the stores where you can find Apple products are not authorized retailers, but “grey market” shops selling non-counterfit “parallel imports”. That is, the Apple merchandise that they sell, while genuine, has not come through Apple’s licensed distributors in the Middle East. For Macs and iPods that means Arab Business Machine, Ltd. (ABM); For iPhones, it’s the local telecoms; Etisalat and du, in the UAE. Why should it matter to you how your iPhone, Mac or iPod has found its way to you? Because you want to know what you’re getting, and that what you’re getting is really what you want.

Since grey market retailers are not getting their stock through the official distributor, they have to import them through other channels, and this can bring a number of aspects into question including the model of the device, it’s actual condition and especially warranty coverage. Since Apple does not give specific names to each upgraded version of a product line, they can often be designated by processor speed and other features, and even by what time of which year they were released, such as “MacBook, Early 2009.” If one wants to be sure that they are getting the latest model, checking model and part numbers can be necessary, if not shopping at an authorized dealer. And a Mac that you think is new may turn out to actually be used, refurbished or defective. Worst of all, a device that has come through a parallel channel is likely to have no warranty, or one that will not be valid in the UAE, leaving the buyer open to substantial additional costs if it fails or has a problem; costs that may include time and frustration as well as money.

24 | NEWS Deciding where to buy That is not to say that all grey market retailers are dishonest or opportunistic. Many will be upfront about what they are offering, including stating that the device does not carry a warranty, or other caveats, and some actually do work to provide good service to their customers during and after the purchase. One such retailer with a good reputation is Mr. Laptop, L.L.C., one of the stores at the Computer Plaza/Al Ain Center in Bur Dubai. Prices at Mr. Laptop are not only generally competitive, but they back up a purchase with support. “We have to take care of the customer,” says Amir Izadi, Managing Director of Mr. Laptop, “So, we will support what we sell.” According to Mr. Izadi, all of their stock is imported directly from the USA, and carries an International warranty. “If there is a problem with an item, I can usually repair it here,” he says, “If it is something that cannot be repaired here, then we will send it back to the USA for service or replacement.” As noted however, the level of support and availability of warranty is going to vary greatly at various grey market retailers, so it is important that a customer do adequate research before making a purchase about the retailers where they intend to make their purchase. This is especially important, because distinguishing a grey market seller from an authorized retailer is not as simple as one might think. There are larger, well-known chain stores that sell Apple products, but are not actually authorized retailers, just as there are smaller shops that are authorized. Additionally, some stores, both large and small, may carry stock that has been properly obtained through the official distributor, as well as parallel imports of Apple products. Best way to determine if a retailer is authorized to resell Apple products, when it comes to Macs and iPods, is to consult the lists on ABM’s site at www.appleme.ae, currently linked under the heading “Where to buy?” There one can find a list Apple Authorized Reseller & Retailers, as well as ABM’s Apple Premium Resellers “Premium Resellers are supervised, in a way, from Apple itself,” states Ali Al Juneidi, Store Manager of iStyle at Dubai Mall, “We have to follow all Apple guidelines. So we’re dedicated to Apple products.” So at iStyle, “you find the expert people that know the product, who know the software, know how to use it.” The service after the sale is most important, says Ali, who can give many examples of consumers who have gone to grey market retailers to try to save money, only to end up with devices that did not function properly, or who ultimately had to pay more to have their non-warrantied Mac repaired.
“The other day I had a customer who had bought a Mac for 1,000 dirhams cheaper than our price in Bur Dubai. She needed a battery for 680 dirhams, and she had to pay the difference.” If one is not shopping at a Premium Reseller, how can they be sure that the Mac or iPod they are considering has come through the authorized distributor and thus carries a locally recognized warranty? Products distributed through ABM are labelled with a hologram sticker bearing the ABM logo on them to distinguish them from grey market imports. This gives the purchaser some assurance of buying a supported product at whatever outlet they may be shopping at. Be aware that if a device carries the ABM hologram sticker it will also likely be selling at the same price as at a Premium Reseller or ABM’s web site, since agreement on price is required of a retailer that is reselling merchandise from the authorized distributor.

ولكن ،الحظنا أن مستوى الدعم وتوفر الضمان يختلف من بائع إلى آخر في السوق الرمادية ،لذا من المهم أن يجري المستهلك بحثًا شام ً ال عن هذه المحالت قبل أن يقوم بشراء أي منتج .هذه الخطوة هي في غاية األهمية ،ألن التفريق بين بائع في السوق الرمادية ،وبين بائع مصرح له ،ليس بالسهولة لتي قد يعتقدها البعض .هناك محالت كبيرة ذات فروع عديدة تقوم ببيع منتجات «آبل» ،دون أي تصريح ،وهناك العديد من المحالت األصغر التي تمتلك تصريحًا لبيع هذه المنتجات .باإلضافة إلى ذلك ،هناك العديد من المحالت ،الصغيرة والكبيرة التي قد تمتلك بعض المنتجات التي تم الحصول عليها من الموزع الرسمي ،وبعضها اآلخر عن طريق االستيراد الموازي كجزء من السوق الرمادي.

Legal aspects One of the main questions asked about the selling grey market/parallel imports is, “Is it legal?” In the case of Apple products the answer is “yes”. In fact, for the most part, parallel imports are legal in the UAE, with few exceptions. While UAE Trademark law includes very specific provisions against the importation and sale of counterfeit goods, parallel imports are not prohibited. And while there are some situations in which an authorized distributor can prevent the unlicensed importation of non-counterfeit goods, these do not currently apply to Apple products, and this is unlikely to change while Apple does not have a legal presence in the UAE. So while the practices of some grey market retailers may seem questionable, they are not categorically violating any laws in dealing in goods that have been imported through alternate channels.
iPhone is special

The iPhone is an issue unto itself when it comes to the grey market. If you purchase an iPhone somewhere other than from Etisalat or du in the UAE, it will not be covered by a warranty here, leaving you high and dry if your phone ends up having any problems. Even though at times customer and warranty service may seem spotty from either of the UAE’s providers, one is still much better of with a warranty than without any at all.

Not only that, but it is not uncommon for phones imported from other countries to have been locked to a particular mobile provider’s cell network in the country they were originally distributed. Grey market stores may then use software hacks to unlock such iPhones so they will work on any other mobile networks. In a number of cases grey market stores have sold iPhones which they claimed were factory unlocked- which would make them useable on any network right out of the box- which were in fact only software unlocked. This may pose no problem to an unsuspecting customer until they decide to upgrade the iPhone OS on their phone, which will then reverse the unlocking process, leaving them with a phone that is unusable on the UAE mobile providers’ networks, and requiring a new round of unlocking in hopes of getting it working again. Meanwhile, an iPhone bought from either Etisalat or du is already factory unlocked, eliminating worries about its compatibility.

As Apple customers it is often said that we pay a premium for the devices we love, but we generally rationalize this because of the added value in usability and reliability that we get from them. Similarly, if one only pays attention to price when making such an important purchase, they can find themselves dealing with a higher cost in unanticipated problems afterward. (Shufflegazine has requested input from ABM on the issues of grey market and warranty coverage, but has not received a response at the time of printing. As we will be covering this subject in further articles, their responses will be included in future issues, when they are provided.)
On top of these is the issue of price; while it is not unusual to find prices on Macs and iPods at grey market sellers that are lower than at authorized outlets, this is not necessarily the case with iPhone anymore. This situation has shifted considerably since both du and Etisalat started offering the iPhone 3GS in October of 2009. Previously, grey market stores offered the iPhone in its 2G and 3G models at prices that were similar or less than what Etisalat asked for a new iPhone 3G, albeit without warranty or cell/data packages available through the telco. But with the introduction of the 3GS- and, probably more importantly, of competition between the two providers- prices on the new models became much more favorable. Despite the improvement in prices from the authorized providers of the iPhone in our region, the grey market store do not seem to have followed suit. For instance at the time of writing, while an iPhone 3GS 16GB is available for as little as AED2,400 from Etisalat, most grey market retailers are still asking AED3,400 for this model, even without warranty or assurance of being unlocked. Some are asking as much as AED4,000.
Summary On this subject, as with most, it is vitally important that a consumer educate themselves on the product that they want to buy and the outlet that they may buy it from. Knowing the details of the Mac, iPod or iPhone of which one is interested, including specific features, model and part numbers will help to guard against disappointment

باختصار فيما يتعلق بهذا الموضوع ،من المهم جدًا أن يحاول المستهلك تعليم نفسه عن المنتج الذي يرغب بشرائه ،وعن المحل الذي يرغب بشرائه منه .إن معرفة التفاصيل المتعلقة بالمنتج، والتي تشمل مميزاته الخاصة ،ورقم الطراز والوحدة سيساعد المستهلك في حماية نفسه من خيبة أمل الحقة .ومحاولة معرفة المزيد عن المحل الذي يعرض هذه المنتجات ،سواء بما يتعلق بسمعته أو بمستوى الخدمة التي اعتاد تقديمها ،قد يساعد على حل المشاكل التي قد تظهر الحقًا عقب شراء المنتج. في كثير من األحيان ،كعشاق لمنتجات «آبل» ،ينتهي بنا األمر بشراء منتجات أعلى سعرًا من غيرها ألنها من العالمة التجارية التي نثق بها ونحبها ،وألننا نثق بأن أداء هذه المنتجات األفضل والموثوق سيوفر علينا الكثير الحق َا .ومن نفس المنطلق ،إن كان السعر هو الدافع الوحيد وراء اختيار منتج ما ،قد ينتج عنه مشاكل بتكاليف الحقة. Let me spend a few words talking about our Shufflegazine podcast (shuffle.to/techchat), because it's a new and significant part of my Apple world. The first show is out and that's certainly a relief, but now the work really starts. Why would we spend time and energy on making a podcast? We're a magazine, right? Yes, we are a magazine and the way we see it the podcast adds a dimension to what we do, a dimension of direct contact with readers and partners, of interaction and debate. On the first show we talk to a range of people, from a distributor of professional audio equipment to a graphic designer. It's a variety that we want to keep for future shows. There should be plenty of opportunity for anyone, from commercial businesses talking about their products and services to individuals talking about what concerns and interests them, to come on the show and chat with us. The show is about one hour long and we do one per week. Forgive me for not writing in very good English. I read mainly the Arabic in Shufflegazine, but sometimes I find words that I don’t know what they are even in Arabic. I would like to have a list of words and explanations in the magazine or on your web site, where I can look up words that I read and don’t understand. -MM First of all, your English is fine, and second, thank you for the suggestion. It's something we've considered for a while, but unfortunately resources right now don't allow us to put the time and effort into this that it requires. We'll keep it high on our todo list for the future though. -Editor
If you find that the local stores in Qatar are too expensive or don't offer the models or options you're looking for, then we wouldn't hesitate to recommend buying online. With something like Aramex's Shop and Ship service you get a delivery address in the US. Add that address to your credit card as a billing address and you should be good to go to buy from almost any web site in the US. Apple products, except for iPhone, have an international warranty that should be honored by local service shops in Qatar. We have some stores here, but selections are not great and prices too high. I want to buy a MacBook Pro. Where do you suggest I buy it? -OR

أنا من أشد المعجبين بهاتف المستقبل (آي فون) ،وكما هو معروف فإن هاتف «آي فون» ينافس «بالك بيري »Blackberryفي سوق الشرق األوسط ،وأيضا كما هو واضح أن «بالك بيري» متقدم حاليًا في السوق لسببين حسب معرفتي أو ً ال :خدمات «بالك بيري» التي توفرها شركات االتصال مثل الخطة الال محدودة ،أما «آي فون» فخدمته حتى اآلن محدودة .وثانيًا :وجود «بالك بيري ماسنجر» للتواصل. اقتراحي هو :أتمنى من «آبل» أن توفر خدمة الماسنجر في «آي فون» مثل «آي شات »iChat ليطوروه ويصبح السبّاق واألفضل في السوق، فعلى الرغم من معرفتي بأن هناك برنامج للتواصل على «آي فون» اسمه «بنغ »Pingإال أنه يعتبر مجرد برنامج وال تدعمه الشركة.

Q: I am having a trouble with playing iTunes on my Mac. Every time I click on a song in iTunes it shows a «?» sign. A: You don't say if this affects just one song, several songs or everything in iTunes. However, it sounds like the actual song-files have been deleted or moved. To do a bit of diagnostics, right click on one of the songs in iTunes that has the question mark, then select “Show in Finder”. If it shows you the song in finder you can try to import it again; if the song is not there it's been deleted or moved. You can try to have iTunes restore the library first. Before doing the next step make sure you make a copy of the iTunes library folder. Go to your home folder, then look in Music. Once backed up, select iTunes > Preferences > Advanced and click on Change. Then select your existing iTunes folder and see if that will help. If it doesn't, then your only option is to import the song files again into iTunes, that is, if you have copies of them.
Q: I have an iMac from 2005 or 2006, one of the first white Intel models. It's 17-inches and has a faint horizontal gray line across the screen about one third from the bottom. Is there something I can do about this? Seems it wouldn't be worth it handing it in for service as it's rather old by now. A: That sounds like a problem with the graphics card or the display itself. Some early iMac G5 models (same physical design as the iMac you have) had some problem with graphics, which Apple fixed. For the iMac model you have I can't find any mention of a common problem like yours. My feeling is that there is not much you can do about it and it wouldn't be worth submitting it for service, especially if you're thinking about buying a new Mac soon. Q: I just bought an iPhone 3GS after having been a Blackberry user for years and years. Is there no way I can talk to my Blackberry Messenger friends using the iPhone? A: Unfortunately the simple answer is no. Blackberry Messenger is only available on Blackberry devices as it depends on the device PIN (the unique identifier each Blackberry device has). You can achieve much the same functionality with other iPhone users with the Ping! application. ($0.99; shuffle.to/ping)
Q: The other day I took out my trusty old Powerbook from the closet and I can't remember the password. I want to log in to see if I can find some files on it otherwise I would just reformat. What can I do? A: We've covered this before, but it's worth repeating as it is an important and common question. You have to find the installation CD or DVD that is for that Mac and reboot from it: insert the disc and start or restart the computer while you press the “C” key on the keyboard. This makes sure the Mac boots from the disc, not the hard drive. Once it's booted up look for the Utilities menu. In there you should see a Reset Password option. With the utility that starts you can reset the password for any user account on the Mac. This works well, but in my experience it's a good idea only to do this as a way to get back in to the Mac to back up everything. Then do a fresh install and restore the files.

The iPhone market was a mess When the first iPhones started arriving in the region you recall, I’m sure, that buying an iPhone was an adventure. Back then, before du or Etisalat offered an iPhone in the UAE, buying Apple’s smartphone was a gamble . You could buy it from all sorts of places, most of which weren’t good. You had to deal with people that you normally wouldn’t, like in some shabby shop in some messed up alley, or a kiosk whose sole purpose it was to rip off stupid tourists. Basically, finding an iPhone was a chore and you needed to know somebody who knew somebody’s cousin, and that guy used to sell snake oil before switching to iPhones. On EmiratesMac.com we received constant complaints from people that had bought an iPhone thinking it was unlocked, only to find out that it wasn’t, but then it would be too late. There was nothing in the way of customer protection, or even a warranty. Should that phone suddenly die there was nothing anybody could do. iPhones back then came with high margins, commonly sold for AED 4,000 to 5,000. And though not all places selling iPhones were shady, even the more reputable places were very ignorant about the product. So it was fair to brandish the iPhone when you went out, you braved the waters to get it, you gave up a kidney and your left nostril to pay for it, and you had the scars to prove it. (And a slight wheezing sound when you breathed).
Things have changed Now there is a source where you can buy a product that is clearly described and is supported by a strong warranty policy. Even before du entered the market, you had a dependable and reputable source to buy from, Etisalat. Prices have dropped since Etisalat entered the market, and they dropped further when du entered it. And though it was possible to find cheaper prices than Etisalat’s before du came into play, it was still a good idea to pay the premium just for the peace of mind.

Service stinks everywhere
But those shady places still exist and the sellers are still making a pretty penny. There are all sorts of places that offer the phone at prices much higher than the current price. Logic would say that prices should be less than du and Etisalat’s, after all it may or may not be locked, and is usually without a warranty. Tarsam used to distinguish themselves from the crowd by offering good service, and commanding a premium. But now they sell the 32GB iPhone 3GS for about AED 4,000. That’s AED 1,200 extra! A search on Souq.com will yield tons of results, all in that price range. Terms are still confusing, like “original unlock” whatever that means. Unlocked doesn’t necessarily mean it was factory unlocked. And blatant lies like “international warranty”, which doesn’t exist for iPhone, but which many people would probably fall for.
I don’t know if it’s the nature of people here in the UAE, but people are never happy. They always complain, even though we have a very high standard of living here. We have good mobile phone reception, smooth roads, and perfect weather for almost the entire year. We tend to forget that service everywhere sucks. When I last went to Best Buy, a major consumer electronics retailer in the US, I was surprised how ignorant the staff was. I was also surprised over how crappy the cellphone coverage was. Many service providers charge $100 for a device that will boost coverage if you are in a bad coverage area. Shouldn’t the telcos pay for something like that? After all, it’s bad because of them, it’s not like you live in a cave. (Unless you are Batman.) On occasion, Apple has refused to service items for smokers, even though they didn’t damage it in any way, because it poses a “health risk”.
Service stinks in the UAE Don’t get me wrong. Many people have heard me complain about how messy things are with those two companies. You wait on hold for hours on end only to get a reply from a guy that only knows his name because the tag on his chest mentions it. You hang up with a few hours lost and a few blood clots gained. But let’s face it, service all over the UAE sucks, and these guys are the cream of the crop. Most companies don’t answer their phones. How those two companies make a profit from telecom is amazing. If you need to return something, you have to wait for your turn, explain the problem, then wait for the guy concerned to come, then explain the problem, then wait for the guy with authority to come, then explain the problem, then swear on all that is holy that you had nothing to do with it. After the lie detector test, you would be told to sign a stack of papers, and as your arm regains feeling you are told that the item is not in stock, and you are issued a credit note or gift vouchers that expire before you get to use them. The other day I went to Plug-Ins looking for an audio cable for my iPhone. After being bounced around from one sales person to the next, I am presented with a AED90 premium cable. My wife tells me to buy it, but I refuse. Instead, I go into the hypermarket nearby to buy one for AED6. Even my favorite shop, Sharaf DG, isn’t immune from this. They claim that you get any item they can’t get you within 24 hours for free, but I tried to buy a certain DVI connector from them and they don’t have it. They don’t know when they will have it. When I ask about the policy which is mentioned on the guy’s shirt, he just shrugs and smiles.
Things can only get better In the end, I don’t want to come off as forgiving and rosy. The services offered widely suck and they need to get better. And though all businesses should strive to improve and we should demand better service, we need to remember that things are better, and we should enjoy that when we get the chance to. Remember that complaining too much is usually a source of aggravation in itself, and that it will likely only ruin your day.

خدمة سيئة في دولة اإلمارات ال تسيئوا فهمي ،يشتكي العديد من الناس من الفوضى التي تعم هاتين الشركتين .قد ينتظر مستخدم ما عدة ساعات ،لكي يحصل على جواب من شخص يكاد ال يعرف اسمه .وبعد عدة ساعات من ذلك، كل ما سيحصل عليه هو ساعات ضائعة وعدة انسدادات شريانية. ولكن ،علينا أن نعترف بأن الخدمة شديدة السوء في جميع أنحاء الدولة ،وما هاتان الشركتان إال أفضل الموجود .معظم الشركات ال تقوم بالرد على المكالمات الموجهة لها ،وما يفاجأني هو قدرة مثل هذه الشركات على تحقيق أي أرباح من مجال االتصاالت .إن رغبت بإرجاع شيء ما ،فسيتعين عليك أن تنتظر دورك ،لتشرح مشكلتك إلى أحد الموظفين ،الذي سينتظر بدوره شخصًا مؤه ً ال للتعامل مع مشكلتك، ثم سيتوجب عليك شرح مشكلتك مرة أخرى ،ثم ستتضطر إلى القسم بكل ما هو مقدس بأنك لم تسبب المشكلة .بعد أن تنتهي من فحص كشف الكذب ،سيتعين عليك توقيع رزم كاملة من األوراق ،وما إن تبدأ يدك بالتعافي من الضغط الذي سببته كل هذه التوقيعات ،سيقال لك بأن ما ترغب به غير متوفر حاليًا .وبهذا ،سيتم إصدار وصل بالرصيد أو قسيمة هدايا بتاريخ انتهاء سيصل قبل أن تتمكن من استعمالها .منذ فترة ،ذهبت مرة فيها إلى محل «بلغ -إنس »Plug-Insللبحث عن سلك للصوتيات لهاتفي «آي فون» ،بعد أن تم تحويلي من شخص إلى آخر، تم عرض سلك عالي الجودة على بلغ سعره ٩٠درهمًا .وبينما حاولت زوجتي إقناعي بشرائه ،رفضت ذلك ،وذهبت إلى الهايبر ماركت المجاور، ألجد ما أبحث عنه بسعر ٦دراهم .حتى محلي المفضل« ،شرف دي جي »Sharaf DGلم يسلم من ذلك .بالرغم من ادعائهم بأنه إن لم تتمكن من إيجاد ما تبحث عنه في محالتهم خالل ٢٤ساعة ،سيعرض المنتج عليك بالمجان ،لم أتمكن من الحصول على وصلة «دي في آي ،»DVI ولم يتمكن الموظفون من معرفة متى سيتم وصول الطلبية .وعندما ذكرتهم بوعدهم الترويجي ،ابتسم الموظف وهز بكتفه.
ال يمكن للحال إال بأن تتحسن في النهاية ،ال أرغب بأن أبدو متسامحًا .الخدمة هنا سيئة بشكل عام، ويجب أن تتحسن .ولكن بالرغم من أن على الشركات بأن تتطور وبأنه يحق لنا المطالبة بخدمة أفضل ،علينا أن نتذكر بأن األشياء اآلن أفضل مما كانت عليه ،وعلينا أن نستمتع بها عندما تحين لنا الفرصة .وعلينا أن نتذكر بأن الشكوى الدائمة ال تؤدي إال إلى التوتر ،وعلى األغلب كل ما سنحصل عليه من الشكوى هو يوم سيئ.

Confessions of
an aching back If you're anything like me, you spend most days in front of a computer using a keyboard and the mouse. Does it sometimes happen that you feel a tingling sensation in your fingers, hands, wrists, arms or perhaps even your shoulders and neck? If that does happen you should think carefully about it, and take some precautions. It's a simple fact: we as human beings were not designed to sit in front of a computer and work with a keyboard and mouse all day. Therefore, you should think very carefully about how your work or office environment is designed in terms of desk, lighting, the chair you use, the mouse and keyboard and more. When we moved to a new office about a year ago I opted for a desk from IKEA that I can raise up by pressing a button so I can stand in front of it and work. In a few seconds I go from sitting position to standing position; and now I find myself standing in front of the desk, working on my Mac, for long periods pretty much every day. Another thing that I have come to depend on is my Kensington expert mouse. It's a trackball, and by using it I can keep my arm and wrist steady and only move my fingers. I can certainly feel a difference, especially in my wrists, if I compare working with the trackball to working with the mouse. In terms of keyboard, I work with a standard Apple wired keyboard. There are some ergonomically designed keyboards on the market and I have tried a few of them, but I have yet to find one that suits my style of typing and that feels comfortable. Think about all that care and attention you put into your Mac, your iPhone and your iPod. Do you put in the same kind of attention and care into your working environment? I know I don't, but I know I should.

أعتقد أن هذه هي أطول فترة أقضيها محدقة في شاشة بيضاء ،ووميض الفأرة في بداية السطر يحثني على البدء ،بوتيرة شعرت بنفاذ صبرها ،وإن لم تنكسر على مدى النصف الساعة الماضية .ال أدري إن كان سبب هذا التردد هو الغيمة التي لم يتمكن كوبين من القهوة من كشفها، غيمة النعاس الثقيلة التي لونت أسفل وأذني عيني بظالل داكنة ،ومألت رأسي ٌ بصداع واهن ،وبطنين ال يتوقف .أو إن كنت أعاني من هيبة الورقة البيضاء الشاسعة، وهي تنتظر أن أمألها بحبر جديد ،وبأفكار أكثر حكمة ،وبآمال أكثر نضوجًا ،بعد أن مرت عليها شمس عام كامل ،وهي تترقب دفئ شمس العام الجديد. ولكن مؤشر الشاشة الصبور مازال هناك، وإن تحرك بعض األسطر ،وأنا مازلت أنا، بنفس الصداع ،وبنفس األفكار المشتتة ُ نضجت التي تنتظر أن تلمها القهوة ،فإن فلم أنتبه إلى ذلك ،وإن شخت فأرفض أن أنتبه إلى ذلك ،وإن ازددت حكمة ،فما زالت حكمتي ضائعة في بحر عواطفي وفوضاي اإلنسانية.

This article nearly did not see the light of day. Almost. Just 48 hours ago, I'd completed a piece on the iPhone's genesis, the Apple Newton. But as fate would have it, Windows decided on a course of hari-kiri after a botched attempt to upgrade Vista to Windows 7, and I kissed my article goodbye. Fortunately, a couple of days earlier, I'd unearthed my trusty old Apple eMate 300 during a spring cleaning session, discovered after several long years of storage in some obscure part of the storeroom. Lo and behold, plugging in the AC power adapter saw her come back to life. As I watched the Apple Newton's boot image fill the small greyscale screen, the eMate came alive after years of laying dormant in a cardboard box filled with other Apple Newton accessories. (Including a fossilized Original MessagePad.) With a looming deadline ahead of me, the eMate was the only option I had over spending more hours hunting down drivers and getting Windows to boot again. After a happy boot chime, the main screen came up, and I was pleased to see that almost 8 years after it came into my life (and the lives of several family members), the flash memory had retained 3rd party apps and whatever data was on board when it was put into cold storage. A quick check in the Extras folder revealed that I still had Works installed, along with SimpleMail, and a working Ethernet card. (RJ45, anyone?) Rolling up my sleeves, I set to work hammering out this article on a device that many would have written off years ago as obsolete. If there's one thing I have to say about Apple products, they never die; they just go to sleep and wake to serve another day. Or in the case of the Apple Newton OS, to Assist. As we all know, Apple doesn't build products, Apple creates user experiences. Apples have always been friendly, people-oriented, over the beige empire of DOS and Windows, and the Newton, back in 1998 was no exception. Aside from being a mobile computer, it was also a friend, almost. You could practically speak to your Newton in plain English. Want to know the time in London? Just hit the Assist button, enter 'what is the time in London' or just 'time in london', and it comes back with it. I didn't even know there was a town/city called London in Ontario, but it was there on the Newton,
asking me which one I wanted the time for. Scheduling a lunch appointment? Hit the Assist button, and ask Newton to schedule it for you and it figures out that lunch is probably around 12 noon, takes an hour, and my request is probably for it to be on the same day since it was 'morning' when I made the request. How's that for intelligent?
The Apple Newton OS was the brain of Apple's handhelds back in the 90's, from the Original MessagePad, to the MessagePad 2100 and the eMate 300. The latter was designed as a product for the educational market, but people eventually fell in love with the form factor and it started becoming popular with anyone who needed keyboard computing on the go. As a matter of fact, this eMate was the primary mobile device of an ex-girlfriend of mine who was an editor/journalist, who used to extensively to take notes at press events, compose articles on the fly, and keep up with her email while on the go. If MessagePads were the ancestors of the iPhone, the eMate could well be regarded as the great grand-daddy of today's netbooks. From a functional point of view, the eMate could do most of what netbooks do today, and mind you, for a product that was launched in 1997, this wasn't anything to sneeze at: email, fax, scheduling, contacts management, web browsing, FTP, word processing and spreadsheets. All in 16 shades of grey. Amazingly, it wasn't exactly large either. Sadly, in 1998, with Steve Jobs back at the helm of Apple, the Newton OS was put to rest, never to be mentioned again, and thus the proud legacy of the platform touted to be 'way before its time', ended. Almost 10 years later, Apple brought us the iPhone, what could have been, but wasn't, the resurrection of the Original, the Newton OS.
So, with my HP went on the blink, and my iPhone being ill-suited to the task of whipping this together, it was the eMate from which I composed this article, emailed it to Google Docs, and patched things back together again.

كاد هذا المقال أن ال يرى النور .قبل ٤٨ساعة ،انتهيت من كتابة مقال عن «آبل نيوتن» ،سلف هاتف»آي فون» .ولكن ،لسوء الحظ ،قرر «ويندوز» أن ينتحر ،بعد محاولة فاشلة للتحديث من «فيستا» إلى «ويندوز ،»٧ وبهذا خسرت مقالي .لحسن حظي ،وقبل يومين من ذلك ،قمت بإخراج حاسبي القديم «آبل إي ميت »٣٠٠من غرفة التخرين ،خالل عملية تنظيف شاملة ،حيث اختبأ هذا الحاسب لسنوات عديدة في زاوية منسية من زواياها .ويا للعجب! ما إن قمت بتوصيل محول الكهرباء ،حتى عاد الحاسب إلى الحياة!. وهكذا ،شاهدت نظام «نيوتن» وهو يعيد الحياة إلى حاسب «إي ميت» ،بعد سنوات قضاها في قاع صندوق امتأل بإكسسوارات «نيوتن» أخرى ،والتي شملت وحدة أثرية من «ماسيج باد» .ومع اقتراب تاريخ تسليم المقال سريعًا ،لم أجد سوى «إي ميت» كحل لمشكلتي ،بدل قضاء ساعات أخرى في إصالح «ويندوز» .بعد سماع صوت التشغيل، ظهرت أمامي الشاشة الرئيسية ،وأسعدني جدًا معرفة أن ذاكرة الفالش قد تمكنت من الحفاظ على البرامج اإلضافية وكل البيانات التي كانت عليها ،حتى بعد ثمان سنوات من دخول هذا الحاسب إلى حياتي ،وحياة العديد من أفراد عائلتي .واكتشفت عند فتح مجلد «إكستراس »Extrasأن برنامج «ووركس »Worksمازال منصبًا على الحاسب ،باإلضافة إلى «سمبل ميل ،»SimpleMailوبطاقة إيثرنت صالحة لالستعمال .بدأت عندها بطباعة هذا المقال على جهاز كان العتبر منتهيًا في نظر المعظم .إن كان هناك شيء يقال عن منتجات «آبل» ،فهو أنها ال تموت أبدًا ،بل تدخل في حالة من السبات بانتظار يوم آخر .في هذه الحال استيقظ «آبل نيوتن» لمساعدتي في كتابة هذا المقال. جميعنا ندرك بأن «آبل» ال تبني منتجات فقط ،بل هي تخلق تجارب فريدة لمستخدميها .لطالما تميزت منتجات «آبل» بسهولة استخدامها ،وبتركيزها على العامل البشري ،على عكس امبراطورية «دوز »DOSو «ويندوز» الرمادية والباهتة ،ولم يكن «نيوتن» استثناءًا عن هذه القاعدة .لم يتوقف «نيوتن» عند كونه حاسبًا محمو ً ال ،بل جاء بمثابة الصديق .كان من الممكن التحدث إليه بلغة بسيطة تقارب العامية ،فإن رغبت بمعرفة الوقت في لندن ،ما عليك إال بسؤاله عن الوقت في لندن ،ليرد عليك بما تود معرفته .ولم أعرف حينها أن هناك مدينة تدعى لندن على بحيرة أونتاريو ،حتى سألني «نيوتن» عن أي لندن أتحدث .وإن احتجت إلى التخطيط لغداء ما ،كل ما علي هو

Speck’s CandyShell iPhone case is not the best looking case you can find for your iPhone, nor does it offer the best protection. It does however present the best compromise between hard shell and soft, protective inside that I know of. On the outside it’s made out of thick strong plastic; this outer layer protects the iPhone very well from bumps and scratches. Attached to the inside of this hard, outer shell is a soft layer of silicone. The soft layer protects the device from impact and holds it tightly in place. Compared to some similar iPhone cases and shells, the CandyShell is easier to put on my phone, as well as to remove. It also seems that there is less dust and dirt collecting between the iPhone and the CandyShell, compared to other cases. With the selection of colors available from Speck you should be able to find a CandyShell that suits you. In conclusion, Speck’s CandyShell is one of the best iPhone cases that I have tried so far, and it’s the case that
is currently on my iPhone 3GS. One downside of the CandyShell, which is inherent to this design, is that there is no protection for the screen, other than the raised rubber edge around the device. I am also a bit concerned about how well the silicone will stick to the plastic over time. But I have used my CandyShell for a couple of months now and I have seen no signs of problems with that.

Forget all that you know about the typical businesstype projectors we’re so used to. Instead, think of a projector made for movies and gaming, projecting a huge bright picture on the wall with crisp detail even when things are moving fast. In the world of digital projectors, the dominating technologies are LCD and DLP. Sony’s alternative of a third technology, LCOS, is called SXRD, and it’s the core of the VPL-HW15. Sony’s had SXRD products since 2004, but they’ve been haunted by problems with quality and reliability. Compared to other projectors I’ve experienced, the VPL-HW15 is quite impressive. Even blown up to sizes fitting an entire wall, the projected picture is still very bright, clear and has excellent colors. Two things that stand out are the fluid motion and how all the black areas really seemed filled with black. I’m guessing the deep black levels are due to the 60,000:1 contrast ration. In the case of fluid and smooth motion that’s at least in part due to Sony’s MotionFlow technology, which you can enable as you like. This works amazingly well even at the projector’s full 1080p (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) HD resolution. Putting a grade on this projector is hard because it may seem very expensive. But put this price against a big flat panel HD TV, add the flexibility only a projector can offer and it doesn’t seem so expensive anymore. If you’re in the market for a projector for movies and gaming, and don’t mind paying the rather hefty price, look no further than Sony’s VPL-HW15.

Sharp’s AP7P and AP8P have the same size and design with a couple of significant differences. The 7P model’s front folds out to reveal speakers, iPod dock connector and controls. It’s a clever design, as it folds up to a compact unit that is surprisingly heavy. Perhaps that’s due to the 2.1 stereo speakers with sub-woofer. The 8P is just a bit deeper than its sibling and the front plate comes off and works as a wireless remote control. In this model you take of a small plate off the top of the unit, which reveals the iPod dock and some controls. Unfortunately placing the iPod there on top leaves it with no protection so it could easily be knocked over potentially damaging it and the 8P. The wireless remote control is a good idea, but it doesn’t seem to work that well in practice. It seems the remote goes to sleep very fast and you have to touch the surface to turn the Active light on before tapping for play, fast forward, or any of the other controls. On both models, if you turn it over you’ll find the door to access the compartment where four AA batteries can be placed for enjoying some music without having to plug it in. In terms of sound, the speakers sound identical to me; the sound is not as rich and powerful as you might want it to be, but keeping in mind the portability and small size of the speakers, I think the sound is good. Let’s face it, you won’t buy these speakers to get the best possible sound.

With approximately 30 million copies sold of all the games in the Command & Conquer (C&C) series, it must be one of the best-known names in gaming, ever. Electronic Arts (EA) has done a good job translating the computer game into something playable on iPhone and iPod touch. C&C is a real-time strategy war game where you have to build facilities and units with limited resources, and fight the enemy through a series of levels. You can play as Soviets or Allies, each campaign consisting of five chapters. There’s also a skirmish mode with more customizable gameplay in two skirmishes. That’s it in terms of what’s included. You can spend $0.99 for six more skirmish maps via in-app purchasing. Graphics and sound are great overall, and add real atmosphere to playing C&C. Controlling the interface is relatively easy, and they’ve done a good job adapting to the mobile platform. But there are instances where the interface elements are too small to be touched properly, especially in situations where things have to happen fast. Another problem is that units often stack on top of each other, making it sometimes impossible to manage individual units. All in all, C&C for iPhone is a great game and well worth the price, but there are glitches, and the extra six maps should have been included in the price. Long time fans of C&C will miss a storyline tying it all together, but they will be happy with the gameplay.

Creative clearly positions this as a gaming headset and doesn’t at all market any compatibility with Macintosh. Minimum system requirements mentioned on Creative’s site don’t even mention Mac OS X, but they work fully out of the box with a Mac. And that’s really good because these are very comfortable to wear, with soft padding that completely encloses your ears and an adjustable microphone. There are two areas where they do fall short, and that’s in noise-reduction and build quality. When you try to adjust the headset, and even when you put it on, it feels a bit like it would break at any second. I’ve used these for a few weeks, mainly recording and editing our podcast, and so far they’re okay, but I’m not sure about longer term. Also, the headphones are supposed to have “intelligent noise-suppression”, but I noticed none of that. If you can live with those shortcomings, just plug them in to your Mac’s USB port, adjust the Sound System Preference pane so input and output connects to the headset and you’re done. Where it counts, in audio quality, this is a very good headset, and it’s comfortable to wear for extended periods of time.

They have, however, done something a bit different with the NMH300, and it's pretty clever. See, the thing is that the NMH300 is really only an empty box into which you can put two 3.5-inch hard drives. The drives mount very easily; they just slide in and lock into place. Given that you have to supply the hard drives, you have flexibility in terms of how much storage space you get and how much money you want to spend on it. But this isn't an outof-the-box, one-stop-shop solution, obviously, which you have to take into consideration. But leaving you with this choice means that the NMH300 is flexible in that you can configure the drives in RAID modes for increased space or increased protection. All administration and management is done via a Flash-based web interface that is surprisingly good. In fact, it's probably the most user friendly and attractive web user interface for similar products I've ever used. The Media Hub lives like a good friend on a local network and can be mounted on Macs as well as Windows and Linux computers. Once mounted you can access it like any other hard drive. You can also set it up so you can connect to it on your local network from anywhere you may be with an Internet connection. However, I could not get the remote functionality to work in our office, possibly because of network configuration issues, even though UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) was enabled all throughout as per the manual's instructions. The NMH300 supports audio, photos and video in most common formats, so you should have no problems adding all your existing media and make it available on your network. In conclusion, the NMH300 is a good product; it works well, managing the hard drives is easy, the interface is very easy to use and overall performance is good. But getting the remote Internet access to work might be tricky. And it comes with a hefty price; you can find similar solutions for less.

It’s easy to set up and comes with Canon’s typical software, which is among the best available from any print manufacturer today. There’s wired network support, but you can’t connect to a wireless network using Wi-Fi, which is a bit surprising. But considering this is a printer made for office environments, perhaps Canon thinks there’s wired networking available, and that is probably true. You have plenty of options for feeding paper to the iX7000, including from the front cassette that can hold up to 250 sheets, a top tray and front manual feed. In addition, you can feed paper from the rear, giving them a flat path through the machine. The iX7000 does full duplex printing automatically from paper in the front cassette, meaning it prints on both sides of the paper. Canon rates the resolution at 4,800 x 1,200 DPI for color and 600 x 600 DPI for black and white. Output certainly looks good, at least when it comes to black text, which looks crisp and clear. In terms of photos, however, the iX7000 is not the best choice as they don’t come out as nicely as you expect. It’s not that you can’t do photo printing with the iX7000, it’s that if you want to print photos there are other, better choices. For business graphics, like Powerpoint presentations, charts, etc. it’s very good though, and that’s probably a more likely use than photos. The printer has six cartridges: three color, two black (one for text, one for photos), and a clear coat ink cartridge. With separate cartridges printer economy should be pretty good. Overall, Canon’s PIXMA iX7000 is a good choice for small workgroup environments that need to print many text and business graphics on a variety of papers.

The Iris Card Pro 4 is a small color scanner with which you can scan business cards that can then be automatically read by software and turned into computerreadable text, then entered into your Address Book, amongst other things. To scan a card takes about 4-5 seconds. On Iris’ web site it says it “zips through more than 600 cards per hour”. Theoretically, that may be possible but in practice I don’t see how that’s going to work. You can set your scanning preferences in “IrisCard Button Manager”, a small app that sits in your Dock. For example, the app can automatically scan a card when it senses it’s inserted, it can save it as a picture, it can send it to the “CardIris” app for converting into text, etc. Unfortunately, the app cannot be removed from the dock, which I find annoying. I’d rather see it as a background daemon with an icon in the menu bar, for example. Scanned cards typically appear in high quality, in part due to the 400 DPI scanner resolution, and it does a good job of interpreting even tough, unusual cards. Unfortunately the interface doesn’t feel as well adapted to Mac OS X as we would expect it to be, it’s not very Mac-like, which is hard to quantify but you know it when you see it. What seemed a bit weird to me was that I had to install the software logged in as administrator in Mac OS X. It wasn’t enough to use my regular user account and authorize the installation with admin credentials, I had to log in to the admin account to install. Not sure why that is and it’s the first software I’ve come across that does that. Overall, in spite of some annoyances with the interface and the way the apps work, it does a good job of scanning and recognizing business cards. Unfortunately when scanning a business card in Arabic the software just says, “Unable to recognize the text.”

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX65 by Magnus | magnus@shufflegazine.com I’ve been very impressed with many Panasonic cameras I’ve tried, like the GH1, GF1 and LX3. The FX65, although not really a bad camera, just fails to shine in any particular way. One good feature of the FX65 is the 25-125mm f2.8 lens. That’s a good zoom range from a really wide angle, and it’s also fast, allowing you to capture sharper images at low light. Inside, the FX56 has a 12 megapixel sensor that captures 4,000 x 3,000 pixel exposures and it can shoot HD video up to 1,280 x 720. Although this might sound impressive it’s pretty much what we’ve come to expect from even very small cameras today. It is slim, light and really easy to operate; with my rather large fingers some of the controls on the back are a bit too small so I have to be careful of what I press. In terms of video there is
no HDMI output, and you cannot zoom at all while recording video, something you can do on most, if not all, competitive cameras. And the video it produces leaves something to be desired in terms of quality. This is not a camera for more discerning photographers. It does not support RAW format, although that’s pretty much expected in this class of camera. What’s more limiting than the lack of RAW is that there are no manual controls other than exposure compensation. This means that you should look at the FX65 as a true point and shoot camera. This is reinforced by the limited functionality in terms of shooting modes. There’s an intelligent scene selector that figures out exactly how to take a photo depending on what kind of scene it thinks you’re shooing, like landscape, portrait, etc. You’ll also
find face detection functionality in the FX65. Picture quality is good, but nothing to write home about, so to speak. Up to ISO 400 pictures are clear and sharp. After 400, noise and artifacts become visible and over ISO 1600 most pictures are poor enough to not be usable. What Panasonic calls “Power O.I.S.” (Optical Image Stabilization) helps in lower light, but don’t count on it performing miracles. In conclusion, as I said, although FX65 is not a particularly bad camera, it just fails to impress in any way. To me, I’d rather look at Panasonic’s FX48 for about the same amount of money, or the LX3 for a bit more.

The mini »«ماك ميني
Currently there are two models of the Mac mini on sale. You can get at 2.26GHz model with 2GB RAM and 160GB hard drive for AED2,699 or a 2.53GHz model with 4GB RAM and 320GB hard drive for AED3,599. Even the lower-end model will do nicely as a media center so you can save some money buying it and upgrading the RAM to 4GB (4GB is what we recommend you have in any Mac these days). In terms of upgrading the hard drive, you can of course do that, at least up to a 500GB model, but you’re going to be better off adding external storage instead, more on that next.
Storage التخزين For a media center there’s no such thing as too much storage space, so you better plan to get as much as you can afford. As I mentioned, you can of course upgrade the mini’s internal hard drive but you’re better off adding external storage. It’s not just a question of space; also consider that the internal notebook-sized drives in the Mac mini are limited in speed. You could actually get a faster-running Mac mini by putting Mac OS X on a fast, FireWire-connected external drive and boot from it. So your first option would be to buy a big external hard drive and connect it directly to the mini with USB or FireWire (the mini has a FireWire 800 port). Another option is to add a NAS (Network Attached Storage). Adding NAS gives you more flexibility because it doesn’t require that the storage is connected to a computer that is on all the time, the drive takes care of that in itself. The drive is connected to the network and all computers on the same network can access it. This pretty much requires a wired network, however, so that transfers happen fast enough. Most storage manufacturers offer NAS solutions today. One good choice is Buffalo’s LinkStation Pro.

Software البرامج Next, let’s look at how you’re going to show all your media on the TV. Since the Mac mini already has Apple’s Front Row built in, that’s the obvious choice. We’ll come back to some other options later in the article. Regardless of whether you will use Front Row or something else you should install Perian (www.perian. org). It’s a free System Preference pane that will let you play almost any media format so you don’t have to worry about installing support for different kinds of movie formats. Check out Shufflegazine’s November 2009 issue, page 95, for a guide to how to install Perian. If you’ve decided to stay with Front Row, add it to Accounts pane in System Preferences under “Login Items” for your account. That way when the Mac boots up it starts Front Row. This of course requires that you have not disabled Automatic Login. It might be a good idea to set up an account just for the media center use, an account not tied to a particular person. Then, at least, there is less risk of personal information being revealed if someone not authorized gets access to the Mac.

Remote control التحكم عن بعد No doubt Apple’s remote is simple and easy to use and it should of course be included in your media center setup. But since you have a computer you might still will want a keyboard and mouse. There are many options from different manufacturers. First you might want to give Apple’s Bluetooth keyboard and Magic Mouse a try. If you have an iPhone or iPod touch you can download Apple’s free Remote app (shuffle.to/remoteapp) with which you can only control iTunes and that’s the drawback. If you want more functionality from your iPhone, try Rowmote ($4.99; shuffle. to/rowmoteapp), which can control a wide range of Mac applications including FrontRow, Boxee, iTunes, iPhoto, Keynote and more. The king of iPhone remote apps is arguably Mobile Air Mouse (www.mobileairmouse.com). With the app you get a virtual trackpad on the iPhone’s display with which you control your Mac mini. If you want something more universal and control your TV, Mac and other devices with the same physical remote, check out Logitech’s Harmony remotes (shuffle.to/logitechharmony). The Harmony remotes can be programmed to be used with almost any electronic device.

Alternatives to Front Row »بدائل «فرونت رو Two alternatives to Front Row that you should try out are Plex (www.plexapp.com) and Boxee (www.boxee.tv). To be fair, it’s not really right to call them just alternatives to Front Row as they are so much more. Each application gives you an interface to media on your computer as well as media online. They have “applications”, which are basically ways you can access content from different web sites and services. One such “application” that both of them have, is a convenient way for you to watch CNN’s online videos. Even though they are both in active development, they’ve not even reached version 1.0 yet, I’ve found Boxee more stable than Plex.

This is where it gets a bit trickier considering we have no iTunes store with music, movies and TV in the Middle East, but fear not, there are alternatives. Boxee and Plex, mentioned earlier, are two ways to get convenient access to some online content. Handbrake (handbrake.fr) is a free application that will rip your DVD movies and convert almost any digital movie files you have into a format that iTunes and Front Row understands. So that takes care of your DVD collection. Without paying money you’re not likely to legally be able to lay your hands on the latest movies but there’s much content online to explore anyway. Vuze (www.vuze.com) is one application you can use to download video content legally. Once something is downloaded it can be added to iTunes from where you can then watch it using your Mac media center. And don’t forget about podcasts. Podcasts are not available with a UAE iTunes account but you can add the podcast feeds manually in iTunes by selecting “Subscribe to podcast feed” in the “Advanced” menu. There are hundreds if not thousands of video podcasts on almost any subject imaginable and much of it could actually, believe it or not, replace or at the very least compliment what you get from cable or satellite TV. If you’re into radio you’re in luck as iTunes has built-in support for thousands of online radio stations, and if that’s not enough you can add new stations. It

requires that the station’s stream is in a format iTunes supports. Find the stream and select “Open Audio Stream” in the “Advanced” menu in iTunes and paste in the stream’s URL. If you also want to record radio you can do that with Radioshift ($32; www.rogueamoeba.com/radioshift). Recorded shows can go into playlists and then be enjoyed using your Mac mini media center. Finally, we should of course mention that all your photos in iPhoto and music in iTunes are available through your media center.

It’s a dynamic microphone, which means it doesn’t have to be plugged in to some kind of power. Also, it’s unidirectional so it picks up sound mainly coming directly in to it. The Competition by Magnus | magnus@shufflegazine.com Even though we’re an Apple lifestyle magazine, we thought we’d take a look at some competing or alternative products from time to time. It could be something like a non-iPod MP3 player or a non-Apple notebook. After all, many potential Apple-buyers also look at alternative products, and we should know what the competition offers to better understand Apple and their products. In this issue we take a look at Sony Vaio X. Sony’s Vaio X (shuffle.to/sonyvaiox), starting from AED4500 is very light and thin. Inside you’ll find a 2.2GHz Intel Atom processor, 2GB RAM, 128GB SSD drive and integrated Intel graphics. This means there’s enough power to run Windows 7 with comfortable speed. The 11.1-inch 1366x768-pixel display is bright and clear and a bit more wide-screen than Apple’s 13inch notebook models. In terms of ports it’s just a tad better than MacBook Air: two USB, Ethernet and slots for memory cards.

In terms of physical size, this is what I’d want a smaller Apple notebook to be like. The Vaio X flexes a bit too much for my liking, especially the screen, so I’m worried about it breaking, but perhaps putting it into a Unibody design would work. When it comes down to it, the Vaio X is small and light enough to throw into a bag, and then you wouldn’t even notice it’s there. I don’t think you can say the same about any Apple notebook. And the Vaio is powerful enough for basic computing tasks, on par with MacBook Air, I’d say.

Selecting what Mac to buy can sometimes be daunting, especially if you’re new to Macs. Therefore we put together this short guide to the different models of Macintosh computers currently on offer from Apple. This guide only offers some brief pointers. The MacBook Air is definitely the ultimate Mac in terms of portability. But even though it weighs in at about only 1kg, it’s no lightweight in terms of performance. For the technology you can find inside them, the MacBook Pros are surprisingly compact. The smallest MacBook Pro, the 13-inch model, sports the same long battery life as its two siblings. The 15-inch and 17-inch models are obviously larger, but also more powerful and have gorgeous, large displays. All models have fast graphics, and expansion options via ExpressCard or SD card slots. The introductory desktop Mac model, petite as it is, still packs quite a punch. It comes with a Core 2 Duo processor of up to 2.66GHz, which is plenty for most of what you’d want to do. And with up to 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive, and SuperDrive as standard, the mini is well prepared for many tasks. It’s limitation lies in that it’s hard to upgrade. Your only option is pretty much to connect things externally via USB or FireWire. There’s even a Mac mini especially meant to be used as a server. It has two 500GB hard drives instead of a SuperDrive to increase storage space.

LightZone - A Photographer’s Tool by Craig Reynolds بقلم كريغ رينولدز Adobe Photoshop is, doubtless, the most widely used photo editing software, but it’s a tool that seems primarily designed for graphic designers. I’m a photographer, not a graphic designer, and so I want a cost effective tool focussed on what I do, without a lot of extra bells and whistles that I’ll never use. At under US$100, LightZone is that tool. LightZone does true non-destructive editing, the image is not altered and all edits are transformations applied to the original, resulting in a new image. When you save, LightZone creates a new file with all edits embedded, leaving your original untouched. You can edit from RAW, JPEG, DNG or TIF files and it runs on Mac, Windows and even Linux. January ‘10 www.shufflegazine.com above the tool stack is a bar containing the editing tools including the Zone Mapper, the Relight tool, Sharpen, Gaussian Blur, Hue/Saturation, Colour Balance, White Balance, Black&White, Noise Reduction, Clone Stamp, Spot Removal and Red Eye Reduction. Crop, Rotate and Region tools are on the main tool bar above the image. above the tool bar is set of tabs for the Zone Finder, Color Mask, Histogram and Sample windows. I rarely use a Histogram anymore, preferring the Zone Mapper and associated Zone Finder window. The Zone Mapper is at the heart of LightZone and makes editing tasks, such as adjusting contrast or exposure, extremely easy. It is based on the Zone System developed by Ansel Adams, a landscape photography master. I find the Zone Mapper far more intuitive than curves. LightZone uses 16 levels of exposure, from pure black to pure white, and each area of your image will fall into one of these zones. Adjusting exposure is simply a matter of clicking on the level you want to change and moving it up (lighter) or down (darker.) Pulling two zones apart increases contrast while pushing them together decreases it. If your mouse is on a particular Zone in the tool then all areas of the image corresponding to that zone will be shown in the Zone Finder window. The other premier tool is the Relight tool; one click and your photo’s exposure is automatically adjusted, taming highlights and improving shadow detail.
An example Here is a step by step example of using LightZone to edit RAW image from my Nikon camera.
Step 1 Open the (RAW) NEF file and LightZone immediately puts a RAW file adjuster at the start of the tool stack. Step 2 I lighten the under exposed image a bit by using the RAW Exposure slider, leaving Temperature and Tint unadjusted Step 3 A Relight tool will further lighten the darker parts of the image and tame the highlights. Relight has the capability of rescuing badly underexposed areas

94 | TUTORIAL المضيئة .هذه األداة لها القدرة على إنقاذ المناطق سيئة اإلضاءة في الصورة ،دون أن تؤثر سلبيًا على األجزاء المضيئة ،وكل ذلك بنقرة زر واحدة. الخطوة الرابعة قمت بإضافة «زون مابر »Zone Mapperإلى رزمة األدوات .على اليسار ،يوجد هناك ١٦مستوى تعرض ضوئي ،من األبيض النقي إلى األسود النقي ،ويمثل نطاق المناطق العريض مستويات التعرض الضوئي للصورة نفسها .مؤشر الفأرة هنا يشير إلى منطقة المستوى الثامن ،وجميع األجزاء التي تقع في هذا المستوى تظهر باللون األصفر في نافذة «زون فايندر» .عند تحريك المؤشر عبر المناطق المختلفة ،سيتم إضاءة هذه المناطق في نافذة «زون» .قمت بزيادة درجة التباين ،وذلك بسحب المنطقة الحادية عشر إلى األسفل ،وسحب المنطقة السادسة إلى األعلى .ال يتعامل «اليت زون» مع مبدأ الطبقات، وبإضافة قناع للمنطقة ،region maskيمكن زيادة التباين في مقدمة الصورة فقط .وبتغيير المنطقة بين الخطوط الداخلية والخطوط الخارجية في المنطقة ،يغير من نعومة أو حدة الحواف. الخطوة الخامسة لتعديل التباين في الغيوم ،وذلك دون التأثير على ما يظهر في مقدمة الصورة ،قمت باستخدام نسخة أخرى من «زون مابر» ،ولكن في هذه المرة ،قمت برسم منطقة حول الغيوم .األن ،أصبح للغيوم لون أفضل ،لتعطي الشعور بعاصفة فتاكة قادمة. الخطوة السادسة أرغب بجعل الطريق أكثر بروزًا ،ولهذا ،ولزيادة لون الطريق البني ،استخدمت أداة «اللون ودرجة التشبع ، »Hue/Saturation لتعديل درجة التشبع والحيوية ،وذلك حتى توصلت إلى ما يعجبني .هذه األداة تقوم عادة بزيادة درجة التشبع في كل األلوان ،لذا ومن أجل حصر التغيير على األلوان األرضية ،ذهبت إلى تبويبة اختيار اللون الموجودة في األدة ،واستخدمت القطارة الختيار الطريق. الخطوة السابعة اآلن ،أرغب بإبراز الزهور الصفراء .استخدمت لذلك نسخة جديدة من أداة درجة التشبع ، Saturationوفي هذه المرة ،قمت بالنقر على الزهور باستخدام القطارة ،لزيادة إضائتها ودرجة تشبع اللون، ليبرز األصفر بشكل قوي. وبهذا انتهينا من تعديل الصورة .حفظ الملف يترك الملف األصلي دون أي تغيير ،ويخلق ملفًا بصيغة JPEGمع رزمة األزوات المستخدمة ، ومرجعًا للملف األصلي .بعد ذلك ،إن رغبت الحقًا بفتح الملف المعدل، ستجد هناك رزمة األدوات جاهزة لتغييرات جديدة ،أو لتغيير التعديالت السابقة .هذه العملية بأكملها لم تتجاوز الخمس دقائق.

Step 4 Add a Zone Mapper. On the left are 16 exposure levels, from pure white to pure black. The wider band of zones represent those in the actual image. The mouse is positioned at the 8th zone down and all areas of the image corresponding to this zone are shown in yellow in the upper Zone Finder window. As your mouse moves across the zones different areas light up in the Zone window. I increase contrast by dragging the 11th zone down, mapping it to black, and dragging the 6th Zone upwards. LightZone does not have the concept of layers, adding a region mask limits this contrast increase to the foreground. Changing the area between the inner and outer lines of the region changes the feathering. Step 5 To adjust the contrast in the clouds independently of the foreground I use another Zone Mapper, but this time draw a region around the sky. The clouds now have better tonality and a stormy, foreboding look.
Step 6 I want the pathway to stand out, so to increase the brown colour of the path I use a Hue/Saturation Tool, adjusting the Saturation and Vibrance until I like the look. The tool normally increases the saturation of all colours so to limit it to earth tones I used the tool’s Color Selection tab and clicked the eye dropper tool in the pathway. Step 7 Lastly, I wanted the yellow flowers to stand out. Another Saturation Tool, this time clicking the eyedropper on the yellow flower, increasing the Luminosity, !Saturation and Vibrance, and the yellows really pop And we’re done! Saving leaves the original file untouched, creating a separate JPEG with the tool stack and a reference to the original file embedded. If you later open the edited file, the tool stack is there, ready for further editing or even changing any previous edits. This whole process took me under five minutes to do.
?What about styles Styles are a set of predefined LightZone tool stacks that enable amazing 1-click changes to your image. Save your own edits as a Style and you can apply them to another image with one click. Let’s create a Black and White image.

Step 1 This time it’s a TIFF file scanned from a slide. (Remember those?) The image is nice but I want better tonality; I also want it black & white. And it’s skewed! Step 2 I use the Rotate tool to straighten the image. I simply rotate the grid until the image is properly framed, hit enter and it’s automatically cropped to fit. The Rotate/Crop tool is not on the tool stack and can be changed at any time. Step 3 I want more detail in the shadows and better highlights as well as increased sharpness, I also want greater tonal separation on the plasterwork. A lot of work you say? Well, a single click of the mouse to apply Soft Wow, et voila! ‘Soft Wow’ is a two tool stack that adjusts shadows, highlights, contrast and sharpness all at once and does it according to your specific image! Step 4 This would make a great black and white image, but to make the yellowish central stairs stand out I’ll try the ‘Yellow Filter’ black and white style. This B&W style mimics a yellow filter placed over the lens when using B&W film and lightens the stairs. I think that’ll do. So, we went from a picture that needed some serious fixing to a seriously great picture in one straighten and two clicks! Photo editing this easy should be illegal.

Vuze, the BitTorrent client previously known as Azureus, is gaining features all the time. From being “just” a BitTorrent download client, it’s now more of a media server, which can host files that can be viewed on other devices like PlayStation 3 and XBox 360. Some say this makes Vuze just even more bloated than before and that may be true, but it does also offer some integration and simplification that may suit many users. We should add that Torrent technology in itself is not illegal, but much of the content available on Torrent sites is. Although what I present here would work with illegally downloaded material as well as legal media you have downloaded via Torrents, it’s up to you to use your own best judgment concerning what you download.
