It’s time for GITEX in Dubai again. The annual technology show rolls into town starting October 18, and Shufflegazine is Supporting Media Partner at this year’s event. Most of the people involved in Shufflegazine have been going to GITEX for a number of years now, and it’s always interesting to see how it develops. Check in with me again after GITEX and I might have changed my opinion, but for now I think it’ll be an exciting week. Whether the technology trade show will increase or decrease this year in terms of visitor numbers or exhibitors is, of course, way too early to tell. One thing that I’m certainly looking for is what exposure Apple and related products and services will get. It’s been announced that Arab Business Machines, Apple’s exclusive distributor in the Middle East will have their stand there as usual, and many other interesting companies and brands have also signed up. But overall, do you think there will be more Apple presence there or not? One thing that might make a difference is iPhone: this is the first GITEX since the iPhone was officially introduced to the market. Also, before October 18, iPhone 3GS might have been launched by Etisalat and possibly also Du. What I do know is that iPhone, even though it’s not been official, has been the big crowd pleaser during the past two GITEX weeks. We do hope you’ll come and visit us at our stand in the consumer electronics hall. The plans for our stand and activities at GITEX are still being finalized but we hope to make our stand a relaxing and inviting haven for Apple fans, in an otherwise busy and PC-centric GITEX

Faster iPod touch Apple is clearly positioning the iPod touch more seriously as a gaming device. While the 8GB model remains the same as the previous model, the 32 and 64GB iPod touches now run 50% faster and support OpenGL ES 2.0, the same as the iPhone 3GS. All in all this makes them even better suited for advanced 3D graphics.

iPod shuffle in colors The tiniest little iPod, the shuffle, was also updated. Apple announced that new headphones, like the Beats by Dr. Dre, are now compatible with iPod shuffle. Shuffle is now available in black, silver, pink, green, and blue in 2GB or 4GB sizes. Also, there’s a Special Edition 4GB model available in polished steel.

iPod nano with video camera The final thing Apple announced was a new iPod nano. There is now a small lens and microphone on the back of the nano. Video quality is 640×480 pixels, recorded at 30fps, H.264, and with AAC audio. The new nanos also have built-in FM radio, microphone, speaker, VoiceOver, and pedometer that syncs with Nike+. You can find our review in this issue of Shufflegazine.
iPhone OS 3.1 Apple also introduced iPhone OS 3.1 for iPhones and iPod touches. The main reason for the update was to bring iTunes 9 functionality to the mobile devices. Included in 3.1 we find improved syncing for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts and photos, redeeming iTunes Gift Cards, codes and certificates in the App Store, displaying available iTunes account credits in the App Store and iTunes Store, as well as pasting phone numbers into the keypad.

Snow Leopard has arrived »وصول «سنو لي ِبرد Apple’s latest operating system Mac OS X 10.6, also known as Snow Leopard, has arrived in the Middle East. Arab Business Machine’s iStyle stores were the first to sell Snow Leopard at 12:01am on August 28th, hours before the OS was available for purchase in the US. Quite a number of Apple fans stayed up late to be among the first to buy their copy of the new cat, including most members of the Shufflegazine team. Retail price in UAE for the upgrade box of Snow Leopard is AED139, although Virgin Megastores have been selling it for AED119. Read our review of Snow Leopard further on in this issue.

Twestivals took place around the Middle East On the evening of September 12, a gathering of an estimated 200 Twitter users met up at the Jam Jar gallery in Dubai for the second Dubai Twestival. Benefiting the Dubai Autism Center charity, tweeters bid on various items in auctions and many more activities. There were plenty of drinks and food available for the crowd to enjoy. Shufflegazine donated one brand new iPod nano and three iPod shuffles to the auction, with all proceeds going to the charity. Nokia was present in full force at the Twestival, showing off their N900 device, which met with great excitement from the tweeps. The day after Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Amman, Jordan also experienced Twestivals.
More candy from LG with Chocolate LG have announced that their Chocolate handset, LGBL40, will be on sale in the Middle East from the middle of October. It’s the latest model to join the “Black Label Series”. The handset has a 4-inch 21:9 wide screen display showing 800×345 pixels (TFT, 16 million colors). Other specifications includes a five-megapixel camera, 7.2HSDPA for fast 3G data connections, multi-touch, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, A-GPS, 1.1GB built-in memory (expandable using MicroSD slot) and more. Yahoo acquires Maktoob.com Yahoo and Maktoob have announced what they referred as, “the best of both worlds,” meaning the Yahoo acquisition of Maktoob.com. Ahmed Nassef, VP Maktoob Group, GM Maktoob.com, said this is the “joining of two great online media powers in the region”. He stated that Yahoo has 20mn unique users in the region and to that you can now add Maktoob.com’s 16mn Arab users. The completion of the acquisition is expected in the fourth quarter of this year and it will be branded as “Yahoo Maktoob”. This deal only includes Maktoob.com and Maktoob Research and not Souq.com, Cashu.com and other Maktoob Group businesses. The remaining parts of Maktoob Group will become a part of the newly formed Jabbar Internet Group. Many have argued that the really big story in this is that Yahoo believes enough in the Middle Eastern online market to make a major acquisition like this. Although very significant in itself a minor side to the main story is that Yahoo’s web sites and services will become available in Arabic with Arabic content.

GEMS Education start Apple pilot GEMS Education, with 26 schools in UAE and a number of other managed and partner schools around the GCC, have started a pilot project in two of their schools trying to see how they can best integrate Apple technologies into their activities. Focusing on the use of MacBooks and iPod touches in education, the pilot includes The Westminster School and GEMS Royal Dubai School. All GEMS schools in the UAE were invited to bid to become part of this pilot and after careful evaluation these two campuses were selected. This pilot adds to GEMS commitment of enhancing student engagement and motivation, while giving teaching staff greater flexibility to deliver the highest possible standard of education. Samsung i7500 first official Android phone in Middle East »أول هاتف «أندرويد رسمي في الشرق » من «سامسونغ،األوسط
Android, initially developed by Google, is an open source operating system for mobile devices, which is for the first time making its way to the Middle East in the form of Samsung’s I7500. It is a 3.5G smartphone, offering quad-band GSM and HSDPA at 7.2Mbps. Samsung put in a 3.2-inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen (320×480 pixels, 16 million colors), a 5-megapixel autofocus camera (2592 x 1944 pixels) with power LED flash, GPS and a digital compass. In terms of software it's equally well-equipped with Google’s mobile services. The phone should be available soon for AED2299.

You know, I love that little iPod nano with a video camera that Apple announced on September 9, but the best thing of the whole event was that Steve Jobs returned to Apple in a public way. We knew from some months ago that he was back at work at Apple after his liver-transplant and medical leave, but this was his first public appearance since then. I think seeing him walk out on the stage warmed the hearts of Apple fans around the world. As co-founder of Apple in the 70s, driving force behind the Mac in the 80s, and the guy who turned Apple around in the 90s, he's obviously such a critical part of Apple that his influence can't possibly be overstated. However, sometimes people ask me whether I think Apple would survive with out Steve, and I always say yes, because I think Apple would do just fine without him. No
doubt some of the magic would leave the company if Jobs was not there anymore, but I think from a business point of view they would survive and do just fine. There are too many talented and clever people at Apple for it to stand and fall with just one man, in my opinion. So even though we already knew that Steve would give the keynote beforehand, it was a nice surprise to see him take to the stage. He did look pretty thin, but who wouldn't be after what he's been through. Now, if the other rumors are true, the ones about him working full time on an Apple tablet, I'll be even happier.

I was one of the first to get Snow Leopard when it became available in the UAE. I installed it right away and have been pleased with all the improvements. The speed of so many functions alone was worth the purchase. Mail feels like a whole new program! But I’ve been amazed at so many who claim to be Apple fans that complain about it. -PL That’s great, PL. At Shufflegazine we’ve not had any problems with Snow Leopard but we know that some users have. Now that Apple has released 10.6.1 we hope that some of the issues facing some users have been fixed. -Editor
I just bought your magazine, and I can’t tell you how happy I am to see something about Apple here. For so long I’ve felt like I’m the only Mac user in a world of PC people, and that’s depressing. I just wanted to ask if there’s a group of Mac fans in Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE? In your August issue I read about Etisalat and the Blackberry problems. That they basically put spyware on Blackberry phones or something. So you’re saying that I shouldn’t buy a Blackberry? -SL It’s not really for us to give such an advice in this setting, SL. We’d need more information about what your needs are, your budget, your travel habits, etc. We can say that several of the people working with Shufflegazine have recently moved away from using Blackberry, using iPhones instead, at least in part because of this issue with the Etisalat update. -Editor

قمت بقراءة مقابلة «أدوبي »Adobeالتي نشرت في عدد سبتمبر ،حيث أصر المتحدث على أن القرصنة هي مسألة أخالقية ،ليس لها عالقة بالسعر .لكنني أعارض هذا الرأي بشدة ،فكل ما عليك فعله هو إلقاء نظرة على أسعار برامجهم .أنا أعمل كمصمم غرافيكي ،لكن تكلفة باقة «سي إس فور »CS4هي بقدر ما أجنيه في شهر كامل .بالنسبة لي ،ليس من الممكن تحمل كلفة البرنامج .أتساءل كيف كان آلسيتر سيرد علي. القارئ BK

Q: I bought a copy of Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6) and now I want to upgrade my MacBook, one of the white ones. Is there anything I should do before going ahead? A: A complete backup is absolutely necessary. More than likely nothing will go wrong, but if it does, you will need a copy of everything. Make sure you have the discs for all your software handy with serial numbers, so you can reinstall them too if something happens. Also check compatibility of your applications with Snow Loepard. Apple has their own list, but there are more extensive and up to date ones, like snowleopard.wikidot.com. It wouldn’t hurt to do some spring cleaning and throw away files you don’t need anymore. You can use WhatSize to find out what takes up space on your hard drives. (shuffle. to/whatsize) Onyx can also help clean up your Mac a bit. (shuffle.to/ onyx) If you do your backups with Time Machine, then you’re well set to upgrade. It might also be a good idea to mirror the complete startup drive with SuperDuper. (shuffle.to/ superduper) That way you’ll have an external hard drive that you can boot from if something happens.
Q: Is there any facility to get the Apple education discount in Oman? A: Yes, you should be able to get the education discount in Oman. Checking with Arab Business Machines, Apple’s exclusive distributor in the Middle East, they inform me that if you check with any of the authorized resellers in Oman they should give you the educational discounts, if you qualify. Q: I just lost my iPhone 3G yesterday, and i had it for two months only. Is there anyway that Find My iPhone will work so I can get it back? Appreciate it. A: You don’t state whether you have a MobileMe account or not. The Find My iPhone service works only if you have a MobileMe account, as you have to log in to your MobileMe account on the web to try to find your iPhone. Q: Does anyone know where I can find a copy of iMovie 06 HD? It seems to be gone. A: When Apple introduced completely new iMovie ‘08, they kept iMovie HD as a free download. They later discontinued that. The only way you can now get iMovie HD is to find an old copy of iLife ‘06. That’ll probably be tough to find, other than somewhere like eBay.com.
Q: Is it possible to transfer songs through iTunes from one iPod to another iPod. I tried various sources, but couldn’t find the answer to this question. A: If you mean via a direct cable between them, then no. You can of course copy one iPod to your Mac using iTunes- if it was previously synced with that iTunes- and then sync the other iPod to the same iTunes. If the iPod has not been synced with that iTunes before you need a third party solution. Senuti is one such application. (www. fadingred.com/senuti/) If you’re copying DRM-ed music bought from the iTunes store, the iTunes you are copying too will have to be authorized for the same iTunes account.

32 | iPEOPLE You described yourself as the “biggest Apple fan in Kuwait”. Tell us about your history with Apple. My involvement with Apple products dates back 30 years. My first computer was an Apple II. I've been a Macintosh user for almost 25 years, but the first Mac I purchased personally was the Mac Plus. I hardly use any other computer platforms although I did dabble with BeOS. I've never owned a Windows PC, and when I was given a PC at work some years ago, I immediately installed Linux, and later used it to run NextSTEP and a beta version of the Rhapsody OS. I often adjust my travel schedules to coincide with releases of new Apple products. For example, in 2007 I traveled to the US specifically to be among the first customers to purchase Mac OS X 10.5. Do you remember what your first experience with a Mac was like? I remember it vividly. In the early ‘80s; one of the accessories that were available for the Apple II was the Graphics Tablet to allow for a graphical input to the computer, unfortunately it was buggy and very costly. (I think it retailed for almost double the cost of an entry level Apple II.) Then came the Macintosh. I remember when I started playing with MacPaint, I was thinking how magnificent the experience was compared to that of the Tablet, but I was just using a mouse, a standard accessory. What software do you use the most? Applications I like to run span everything from iLife, Aperture, Photoshop and technical packages such as Mathematica, to Aabel and KaleidaGraph.

34 | iPEOPLE So you're into Macs, how about other Apple products, like iPod and iPhone? I'm also a huge fan of the iPod, I ordered the original iPod when it was first announced, and since then the iPod has evolved in a way that changed many facets of our lives. Today's iPods are far more than simple music players: often they constitute the center of an audiophile's system, usually in combination with a set of speakers. More than any other electronic music player, the iPod has even changed the way we listen to nonmusical events such as news and discussion programs. Every week I download and listen to about 30 podcasts covering the range that goes from politics to science and entertainment. Podcasts have occupied the position of talk shows and short-wave radio programing of the past, with the exception that the choices of available programs are more diverse, they are available independent of the time of day, and the quality of the sound is far more superior. It's been ages since I actually listened to local programs on the radio. What is your favorite Apple product ever and why? Given Apple's long history in the market, the variety of products and the changing paradigms of the techindustry, it is somewhat hard to choose just one product. A simple answer would have been the Apple II in the 1970s, the Macintosh in the ‘80s, the iMac in the ‘90s and currently the iPod/iPhone. But rather than choosing a physical product, I’d say that the leadership Apple has demonstrated, more than any other hi-tech company, in successfully creating or improving paths to new venues in the market place is what I admire the most. The things Apple has done to introduce products that appeals to consumers as well as businesses, be it the first home computers, GUI, software, iTunes music store, smartphones and more is the really amazing aspect of the company.

What do you think the situation is like with Apple in the Middle East? ABM, the exclusive distributor of Apple products in the Middle East and resellers, are they doing a good job? What could be improved? First of all, I have the usual complaints about the limited supplies to the demanding market that often pushes the availability of new products to a trickling rate. More importantly, I think there must be more to be done to address the needs of the local Apple customer. For example, the establishment of a localized iTunes music store. That might not be easy given the agreements between Apple and the international record labels, but a step could be taken with the local record labels. ABM could be a lobbyist for this and other customer needs, be it from Apple or another company. Case in point; the Microsoft Office suite still lags behind the Windows version in terms of localization. In Apple-related events over the years, I’m often amused at how genuinely surprised the representatives from Microsoft seem to be when I outline to them the need for right-to-left language selection on the Mac version of Office. A couple of years ago I delivered this grievance personally to Steve Ballmer. A company could do more in requesting such demands than individual users. Finally, anything else you would like to add? First of all I’d like to thank you for this wonderful opportunity, and indeed I’d like to register my admiration for Shufflegazine, a much needed publication in the region for all Apple lovers. I like to think of Apple as something more than just another tech company because it manages to create a unifying factor to fans and lovers of technology regardless of where or who they are. This trend has done to technology what sports, arts and entertainment have done to the human experience in bringing people from all over the world together, and as such, being an Apple fan is being a part of a true universal escapade.

كيف ترى وضع «آبل» في الشرق األوسط؟ هل تعتقد أن موزع «آبل» الحصري في المنطقة ،شركة«إيه بي إم ،»ABMتقوم بعمل جيد؟ ما الذي يمكن تحسينه؟ لدي نفس الشكاوى التي يعاني منها الكل ،وهي الكميات المحدودة مقارنة بطلب السوق الذي يجعل من المنتجات الجديدة قليلة التوفر. ولكن أهم ما في األمر ،هو محاولة االستجابة إلى طلبات مستهلك «آبل» المحلي ،مثل إنشاء محل موسيقى «آي تيونز» محلي .قد ال يكون هذا أمرًا سه ً ال عند أخذ كل االتفاقات التجارية بين «آبل» وشركات التسجيالت العالمية بعين االعتبار ،ولكن أعتقد أنه يمكن البدء بأخذ الخطوة األولى مع شركات التسجيالت المحلية .يمكن لشركة «إيه بي إم» أن تكون أحد الداعمين لهذه الفكرة ،أو لألفكار األخرى التي تستجيب لحاجات المستهلك المحلية ،لتقوم برفع هذه األفكار إلى «آبل» أو إلى الشركات األخرى المحلية .مث ً ال ،ما زال برنامج «مايكروسوفت أوفيس Microsoft »Officeللماك متخلفًا بأميال عن نسخة البرنامج لـ»ويندوز »Windowsمن ناحية استجابته للمتطلبات المحلية .ولطالما أدهشتني ردة فعل ممثلي «مايكروسوفت» عندما أوصل لهم مدى أهمية دعم «أوفيس للماك» للغات التي تبدأ من اليمين إلى اليسار مثل اللغة العربية .ومنذ حوالي سنتين ،قمت بتوصيل هذه الشكوى إلى «ستيف بالمير» شخصيًا ،لكنني أعتقد أن بإمكان شركة ما فعل أكثر ما يمكن لفرد واحد فعله. هل لديك ما ترغب بإضافته؟ أو ً ال ،أرغب بشكرك على هذه الفرصة الرائعة ،وأرغب أيضًا بالتعبير عن إعجابي بـ«شفل جازين» الستجابتها لحاجات عشاق «آبل» .إني أرى في «آبل» أكثر من مجرد شركة تكنولوجيا ،ألنها قادرة على خلق عامل مشترك يعمل على جمع كل عشاق ومحبي التكنولوجيا بغض النظر عن من يكونون أو أين يعيشون .لقد حققت هذه الثقافة للتكنولوجيا ما حققته الرياضات والفنون للتجربة اإلنسانية ،وذلك بجمعها للناس من جميع أنحاء العالم ،ليصبح «عاشق آبل» جزءًا من المغامرة العالمية الحقيقية.

Mac user on the go by Magnus | magnus@shufflegazine.com Even though I have two desktop Macs, one iMac at home and one Mac Pro at work, I spend most of my time with my MacBook. It's about a year old now, one of the first Aluminum MacBooks. When I bought it I spent $600 extra to get the SSD version and although the 128GB often feels small I typically have some 20GB free because I try to be frugal with what files and applications I keep on it. For example, I keep nothing really in iTunes on my MacBook, that all sits on an iMac at home. The apps are kept to the most critical ones and the files on the MacBook are usually only the ones I work with at the moment. One thing that has helped me in a big way to stay mobile is Dropbox. (getdropbox.com) I subscribe to their $9.95 per month service, which gives me 50GB of space that syncs between computers and an online account. Using Dropbox means I have all my files, up
to date and available on all my computers. And if I'm not at one of my computers I can get to my files on the web. To keep me mobile I also carry around with me a large backpack, usually full of stuff. It has a small Panasonic DMC-LX3 camera in it, an external 500GB hard drive, USB flash drives, an extra MacBook battery, and all kinds of cables, connectors, and bits and pieces. Something else that helps me stay mobile is Evernote (www.evernote.com). I use their application on my Mac to capture and save all kinds of information and I get access to the same using my iPhone. It also lets me capture information with my iPhone that is then synced with my Mac. Since we all live increasingly mobile lives, it's important that we find out what mix of technologies work best for us. The same solutions won't fit everyone, but sharing what we use might help others.

ألن أقطع الحبل السري ،فسأفعل ذلك ،وإن اضطررت ألن أمشي فسأمشي .ولكن اليوم ،لدي الكثير من األشياء األخرى التي أرغب بتعلمها ،ولن أتخلى عن هذا الترف المعرفي ،وهذه الصلة القوية بالعالم أكمله إال إن أجبرت على ذلك .ولن أرضى بأقل من حاسب صغير في جيبي ،وبانترنت يعمل على مدار الساعة ،ولن أقايض فنجان القهوة العفوي ،بأي حياة أخرى. من السهل أن ننتقد كل ما هو جديد ،ومن السهل أن نصبغ ذكريات طفولتنا برومانسية شديدة الوردية ،ومن السهل بأن ننسى كم كان صعبًا التخطيط لفنجان قهوة ،وكم كان مخيفًا االنتقال إلى بلد جديد بعيدًا عن الوجوه المألوفة ،خوفًا من أن تضيع أبدًا بسبب هاتف مفصول ،أو عنوان متغير ،أو حتى خدمة بريدية سيئة. ما جلبته هذه التكنولوجيا الغازية كما يسميها البعض ،هو القدرة على التحرك دائمًا ،دون الخوف من فقدان االتصال ،فهي جلبت للبعض مكتبًا متحركًا ،وللبعض اآلخر أخبارًا جديدة ،وللبعض األخير أصدقاء جدد. ولمن يدعي بأن العزلة مستحيلة ،كل ما عليه هو إطفاء الهاتف المتحرك وجهاز الموديم .فالعزلة ليست بمستحيلة ،ولكن مقاومة كل هذا الكم من األفكار المتبادلة والمعرفة ليس ألصحاب القلوب الضعيفة ،أم هل قصدت العكس؟

حبلنا السري
هل تخيل أي منا بأن التخطيط لفنجان قهوة ،سيبدأ برسالة نصية قصيرة على جهاز صغير في جيبي؟ وبأن هذه الخطة قد خطرت لي وأنا خارجة من المنزل عند رؤيتي لسيارة حمراء صغيرة ذكرتني بصديقتي العزيزة؟ وبأن صديقتي ،ستقوم في لحظتها بالتحدث إلي ،وهي تتسوق في السوبرماركت ،لنخطط أين سنشرب قهوتنا؟ هل تخيل أي منا بأنه سيقوم بترجمة كتاب وهو في دبي ،بينما يجلس مدقق الكتاب في راحة مكتبه في دمشق ،والناشر الذي خطط لكل شيء ،يعيش في أبوظبي؟ والكتاب هو أبسط هذه األمثلة! هل تخيل أي منا بأن فريقًا كام ً ال مكونًا من ٢٠شخصًا، موزعين على أربع مدن حول العالم بين دبي وبوسطن وبيت لحم وتكساس ،وعلى منطقتين زمنيتين مختلفتين حد االختالف، سيقوم بتصميم ،وتنفيذ ،وتوزيع نظام كامل ببرامجه ،وبمعداته الصلبة؟ هل تخيل أحد بأن مصورًا ما سيتسلم طلبًا لعمل ما ،وهو في طريقه إلى صالة الرياضة؟ وبأنه سيرد ويقبل هذا العمل وهو يشرب قهوته في المقهى المجاور ،وبأنه وما إن يلتقط الصور، سيتمكن من إرسال بعضها وهو في موقع التصوير؟
إن االنترنت ،وهذه التكنولوجيا المحمولة في جيوبنا ،وفي حقائب يدنا ،هي كحبل سري يربطنا إلى عالم مواز لعالمنا ،عالمم يربطنا إلى بعضنا البعض ،سواء كنا في أقصى شرق الكرة األرضية أم في غربها. البعض يقول بأن العزلة لم تعد خيارًا في عالمنا ،فدون حبلنا السري الطويل الذي يمتد إلى سياراتنا وأماكن تسوقنا ومقاهينا، بكل ساطة ،سنختنق! .لقد غدونا كاألطفال في اعتمادنا على هذا االتصال لكي ننمو ،وعلى المعرفة المتوفرة دائمًا لكي نكبر، وهذه هي طريقتنا .قد ينتقد الكثيرون أسلوب حياتنا ،وقد يشتكي العديدون من أن االتصال اإلنساني في طريقه إلى الفناء ،ألننا في اعتمادنا على التكنولوجيا لن نتعلم يومًا قطع الحبل السري ،ولن نتعلم يومًا المشي ،ولن نتعلم يومًا الحب والتحدث والمخاطبة ،بل حتى وقتنا صار أسرع وأصبحنا نشيخ ونرهق في زمن أقصر .وأقول لهؤالء ،أني لم أمتلك أصدقاء يومًا بعدد أصدقائي اليوم ،وبأني لم أتحدث يومًا بالمعدل الذي أتحدث فيه اليوم ،وبأني أتعلم في يومي مئات األشياء الجديدة في هذا الوقت «األقصر» ،وبأني إن اضطررت

You can call me a fuddy-duddy with negative attitude, but yes, I consider the Snow Leopard update a rip-off. That said, I'm still one of the people who will happily go pay $29 to get upgraded to Snow Leopard. But alas, what is in Mac OS X 10.6 for me ? Exchange server support? Hello everyone, my Nokia mobile has support for Exchange synchronization. After all, instead of Apple spending a fortune integrating Exchange into their system, their time would be better spent on improving their mail server for better integration in organizations, especially if business is what Apple is aiming for. 64bit support? Two years back, Apple announced that Leopard 10.5 is indeed 64-bit OS. Why am I having to pay an additional $29 to get what has supposedly been there for two years already? Besides, Microsoft has had 64-bit OS's- Vista, XP and Windows servers- for a long time, so what's the big deal now with Apple? The rest of the features are some tweaks to the OS which are not really worth being called a NEW OS. From my point of view, Apple is only delivering what they have failed to deliver with Leopard to really compete with Microsoft's Operating Systems. Snow Leopard should have been a free Software Update or Service Pack, in Microsoft language, or a major free upgrade for current Leopard users, most of whom would notice no major changes in how Mac OS functions. I take that back. Some will see real major changes and I am one of them. After I updated my previous Mac OS to 10.5.8 I was facing huge problems connecting to wireless networks and Bluetooth connections. So now I am paying $29 for Apple to get rid of the problems they have created for me. To me, it is a very disappointing approach Apple has taken to make us pay for something that is supposed to be a fix for current problems in Mac OS. 44 | iPEOPLE Abu Shady. Perhaps the last of Damascus’ storytellers (or hakawati). Photographed at Al Nafoura café, Damascus, Syria, where he tells timeless tales. This version of the photograph is somewhat ‘desaturated’ as it was for the wall of the café – where it now proudly hangs.
Qatar and Kuwait I’m using two 500GB drives mirrored to keep two copies of every photo. (Backed up via the awesome SuperDuper! software.) Laptop hard drives are also backed up via SuperDuper! nightly. Softwarewise, I use Apple's Aperture for importing and sorting images, Nikon’s Capture NX 2 for fine-tuning the selected images- shooting RAW allows me to change settings such as white balance and exposure natively in Capture NX 2- and then Photoshop for touch up and final sharpening. So, Adobe software plays a very important part in your everyday work. What's your view of how Adobe software has developed through the versions to the current CS4? I've been using Photoshop since version 1, so I've seen it all, I guess! The most significant milestone for me was the introduction of layers, and later layer-based adjustments. There have been rocky times – the speed of growth of the Internet caught Adobe out far more than former rivals Macromedia, and having to ‘Jump to ImageReady’ to finish web graphics was odd. Today it’s mature software, making it hard for Adobe to sell ‘musthave’ new features with new releases. Photographers don’t mind new features, as long as old ones don’t have their keyboard shortcuts changed! You’ve not upgraded yourself yet to CS4. What is the reason for that? Actually, at the time it came out I wanted to quit using Photoshop and just use Aperture and didn’t see any major compelling reason to upgrade to CS4.
Give us a brief view of what you do and your background. I'm a travel and editorial photographer and a travel writer. I spend 80% of my time on photography and the rest helping my wife- travel writer Lara Dunston- write travel and food related articles for magazines. We literally live on the road; it’s tiring, but satisfying. I have a Master’s Degree in media studies and I’ll probably study more when I eventually slow down and get too old to be lugging camera bags around the world. As a professional photographer, what kind of equipment- software and hardware- do you use? I've always been a Nikon user, so I have a few Nikon DSLR bodies, my current favorite being the D700; it’s brilliant in low light. I have far too many Nikon lenses, but mostly use prime lenses. (35mm f2, 55mm f1.4 and my favorite for portraits, the 85mm f1.4.) A MacBook Pro is my main computer, and I use a bunch of portable hard drives for photography on the road, usually two per ‘trip’. For example, for this jaunt through Syria,
Some would argue that new versions of CS don’t contain enough new functionality for it to warrant the investment. Do you feel that's a fair point of view? It depends what kind of work you’re using Photoshop for. For most photographers CS3 to CS4 was not a significant upgrade, and the ‘non-support’ of CS3 under Snow Leopard by Adobe is disappointing, but understandable. Finally, as CS5 is being developed right now, what's your advice to Adobe for the upcoming version? 64-bit for the Mac, obviously. Don’t make Lightroom part of Photoshop, and don't use the ‘task-based’ metaphor of Lightroom- or the awful interface. But what CS5 really needs is competition. A lot of Mac users are quite cynical about Adobe these days; look at how horribly the Flash plug-in works on Macs and their ‘Adobe Updater’ and download service is abominable as well. A serious competitor for Adobe would be good for everyone, including Adobe.

هل لك بأن تحدثنا قلي ً ال عن نفسك؟ أعمل كمصور محترف متخصص في تصوير الرحالت واألسفار وصور المجالت ،وأعمل أيضًا ككاتب متخصص في مجال األسفار .أقضي ٪٨٠من وقتي في التصوير ،وأساعد زوجتي «الرا دونستون» ،وهي كاتبة متخصصة في مجال األسفار والطعام ،خالل وقتي المتبقي. نقضي معظم حياتنا في تنقل مستمر ،وذلك يسعدنا ،وإن كان متعبًا أحيانًا .أحمل شهادة ماجستير في الدراسات اإلعالمية وأرغب باالستمرار في الدراسة ،ولكن ربما عندما أتقدم في العمر وتصبح معدات التصوير ثقيلة علي في تنقالتي. كمصور محترف ،ما هي البرامج والمعدات التي تستخدمها في عملك؟ لطالما استخدمت كاميرا «نيكون »Nikonفي عملي ،وأمتلك عدة كاميرات مختلفة من كاميرات «نيكون» الرقمية ذات العدسة األحادية العاكسة ،وكاميرتي المفضلة حاليًا هي «دي ،»D700 ٧٠٠ ذات األداء الرائع في ظروف اإلضاءة الخافتة .أمتلك الكثير من العدسات ،ولكنني أستخدم العدسات األساسية في معظم األوقات ،وهي :عدسة ٣٥مم ،f2و ٥٥مم ،و ،f1.4وعدستي المفضلة للبورتريه ٨٥مم .f 1.4أستخدم حاسب «ماك بوك برو» كحاسبي الرئيسي ،وأحمل معي عدة أقراص صلبة خارجية لرحالتي التصويرية، وعادة آخذ معي قرصين للرحلة الواحدة .فمث ً ال ،في آخر رحلة لي والتي قمت خاللها بزيارة سوريا ،وقطر ،والكويت ،استخدمت قرصين صلبين ،كل منهما بسعة ٥٠٠غيغا بايت ،لكي أحتفظ بنسختين من كل صورة (أقوم بالنسخ االحتياطي باستخدام برنامج «سوبر دوبر »Super Duperالرائع). نسخ احتياطية ألقراص الحواسب كذلك ،أستخدم «سوبر دوبر» إلجراء ٍ الصلبة بشكل ليلي .أما من ناحية البرامج ،فأستخدم «آبريتشر »Apertureلتوريد الصور وأرشفتها ،وأستخدم برنامج «كابتشر إن إكس »Capture NX 2 ٢من «نيكون» لتعديل الصور في صيغتها الخام ،الذي يسمح لي بتغيير اإلضاءة وتعديل توازن اللون األبيض على الصورة األصلية ،وبعد ذلك أستخدم «فوتوشوب »Photoshop للتعديالت والرتوش األخيرة.

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard by Magnus | magnus@shufflegazine.com Apple’s latest operating system, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, has arrived, and to make this review brief I’d say it’s a musthave upgrade for pretty much all Leopard users. 10.6 is different from almost any other major OS update since it doesn’t have the new interface and hundreds of new functions we’ve come to expect in new OS versions. Instead Apple has focused on improving things behind the scenes, so to speak, putting their efforts into making the new OS faster, more reliable and future proof. And I think there’s no doubt that Snow Leopard is faster than Leopard. If we put it simply there are three main reasons for this. First, the entire OS is now what’s called 64-bit. Compared to 32-bit, which is what we’ve been running for a long time, it means the computer can shift around more data, speeding things up for you as the user. Second, improved support for multicore processor (like Intel’s Core 2 Duo) with what Apple
calls Grand Central Dispatch. It basically helps programmers write software that better piece processing of tasks into small pieces that can be individually handled by different cores thereby running faster. Third, through something called OpenCL APIs, programs can take advantage of the processing power available in today’s powerful graphics cards. In terms of interface changes and improvements there’s little that is immediately noticeable. Apple
has partnered up Exposé and the Dock so you now get access to Exposé via the Dock. This means a better way to keep track of open windows, among other things. The Finder has been rewritten and is now fully Cocoa-native, meaning it runs faster. I like how they’ve made file icons basically be live previews of the content of the file. For me this means less use of Quick Look, as I can just look at the icon instead. And Snow Leopard’s icons, which can be up to 512x512 pixels are simply gorgeous. There’s a new QuickTime also. QuickTime X looks like a slimmed-down iMovie ‘09 and it has a editing ability similar to iPhone 3GS.

لقد وصل نظام تشغيل «ماك أو إس إكس ١٠,٦ سنوليبِرد ،»Mac OS X 10.6وباختصار ،على كل مستخدمي «ماك» ترقية نظامهم إليه. يختلف هذا التحديث عن بقية األنظمة األخرى بسبب احتفاظه بنفس واجهة المستخدم القديمة ،وعدم توفيره لمئات من الوظائف والخصائص الجديدة كما عودتنا «آبل» مع كل نظام جديد .لكن بد ً ال من ذلك ،ركزت «آبل» على تطوير ما هو خلف الكواليس ،لتركز جهودها على جعل النظام الجديد أكبر سرعة ،وأفضل أداءًا وأكثر قدرة على مواكبة المستقبل .عند مقارنة النظام الجديد بنظام «ليبِرد» ،ال يوجد مجال للشك بأن «سنو ليبِرد»

You can now record from iSight camera as well as directly from the screen. If you’re a QuickTime Pro user you might be disappointed, however. Other applications have also been improved, for example Preview. There are also many small improvement, many of them very clever, in how Mac OS X works. For example, it’s now much smarter at warning users when files on a disk are busy when trying to eject the disk. However, for many users it is the built-in support for Microsoft Exchange in the Mail app, iCal and Address Book that is the great attraction in Snow Leopard. Some users report issues with the Exchangecompatibility, but in my experience it works well. One final aspect of Snow Leopard is that it will save you precious disk space. Apple promised 6GB of savings and I got almost 10GB free on a Core 2 Duo iMac with 500GB hard drive after the upgrade. All in all I think Snow Leopard is a must-have upgrade for all Leopard users. The potential savings in disk space, the faster processing and the small interface and functionality improvements are well worth the low price. That’s not to say that everyone will see major differences though if they upgrade. As always, if your Mac works well with Leopard, then by all means keep using it. However, there are definite benifits to Snow Leopard, which you may want to take advantage of.

Blue Mic Mikey iPod microphone by Magnus | magnus@shufflegazine.com Have you ever wanted to record interviews or music with your iPod? For that you need some kind of microphone to attach to the iPod. Blue Mic's Mikey is a small device that attaches to an iPod via the dock connector and extends the length of the device by about three centimeters. Basically it is stereo speakers on one side and microphone on the other, with a simple slider that controls the gain setting between three levels. The gain setting is helpful as it lets you adjust the recording to fit the situation, like how noisy it is and what type of room you're recording in. Mikey is widely compatible with Apple's MP3 players: iPod touch 2G, iPod 5G, iPod nano 2G, 3G and 4G, as well as iPod classic. It can also be used with iPhone 3G and 3GS in Airplane mode. Belkin's TuneTalk, which is arguably the closest competitor, is missing speakers, but it has a port for plugging in an external device like a stereo for recording from it, as well as a USB port so the iPod can charge while recording. Mikey wins in recording quality though, and the speakers are very convenient.

There is really not much to say about the Xtreme XTM-900 Bluetooth earphones. It’s a small clip to which the actual earphones are connected. You’ll find controls for volume, start/ stop, backward/forward and on/ off on the clip. There’s a tiny little joystick-like thing that you move to make things happen. There is no way of locking the controls down though, so depending on where you put the clip it’s easy to accidentally move the control stick. On the side of the clip you find the port for charging, and at the top is the 3.5mm jack for connecting earphones. The included earphones are not of the best quality and I’d suggest you look at different ones; these earphones hurt my ears after just a few minutes of use. Even though their press release says the XTM-900 has a “mini USB” port it doesn’t look like any mini, micro or standard-size USB port I’ve seen. (It charges through this connection.) It would have been better if they had stuck to a more commonly used type of port. In brief, the XTM-900 are affordable but don’t expect the best quality of audio with the included earphones.

I think it’s true that you can not have too much storage. These days we produce and store more digital content than ever before, so we need space. The traditional way to get more storage is to connect an external hard drive to your Mac’s USB or Firewire port, but those days are quickly disappearing. Now the option of Network Attached Storage or ‘NAS’ is a reality, and Apple’s Time Capsule (TC) is a good example of just that. Although TC is a great solution for Mac environments, in mixed setups with Windows, Linux and Mac, something like Buffalo’s LinkStation Pro is a better choice. Basically, you plug it in to your network using an Ethernet cable and you’re good to go. It will be available by default to all computers on that network. If you connect to it using a web browser you can configure it; like starting and stopping servers, setting access for groups and users, and much more. It has a lot going for it in functionality, with Gigabit Ethernet for fast network connections, UPnP for automatic network and server configurations, iTunes server support and a built-in BitTorrent client. One especially cool feature is Buffalo’s WebAccess tool. It gives you easy access remotely to your LinkStation from anywhere on the Internet, but you don’t need to know how to configure it. You just enter a name for your Linkstation and turn WebAccess on. Then, when you want to access it remotely, you go to www. buffalonas.com, enter the Linkstation’s name and you can connect. This is a more versatile solution than Apple’s remote access to TC because Apple’s solution requires a MobileMe account. So my verdict is that Buffalo’s LinkStation Pro LS-XHL is a very good choice for anyone wanting a NAS; it’s full of functionality at a reasonable price and it works with all three major platforms: Windows, Linux, and Mac.

Let’s get this straight first, everyone should have a SolarMonkey. It’s one of those little clever devices that makes you say to yourself, “why didn’t I think of that?” The SolarMonkey is a two-part solar panel that folds up for easy storage and transport. You can use any of the included connection tips to attach an iPod, Nokia mobile phone, Sony Ericsson phone, BlackBerry or almost any other device you can think of. How fast your device charges depends on how strong the light it is that shines on the panels, and obviously in strong sunlight- which we have a lot of here- it charges faster. I tried it with an iPod classic and it had charged half way from being totally empty in about three hours outside, and that’s not too bad. The SolarNut is a small battery that you can use as an emergency power to get your device running for a few minutes; it charges using the SolarMonkey. The only reservation I have is the price, which is on the high side, but considering you can charge almost any device, it’s actually not a bad price.

Amazon Kindle DX in comparison to Merlin's E-book Reader
Kindle DX is Amazon's latest model of their e-book readers and in short, it's a great device. The most noticeable news is the gorgeous 9.7-inch display with 1200x824 pixels showing 16 shades of gray. It's very crisp and has high contrast, making pages look almost like paper. It's a big difference from most computer displays and you've got to see it to believe it. Amazon put in 4GB flash storage with 3.3GB usable space in the Kindle DX and that is actually quite a lot. Many ebooks only take up kilobytes of space, rather than megabytes, so you can put thousands of books on the DX before you run out of space. If you put PDF and MP3 files on it you'll run out of space pretty quickly though. Yes, the DX has built-in support for PDF and MP3 files. You can even listen to music while you read a book. In the US you can buy books from Amazon

without connecting the DX to a computer. You shop wirelessly over Whispernet. Unfortunately this only works in the US, so you have to connect the DX to your Mac using a USB cable and copy files over that way. The DX mounts on your Mac OS X desktop as a flash drive and you drag files across. This is a bit inconvenient, but it works. You control the interface with buttons along the right side of the DX and a small joystick-like controller. There's a keyboard at the bottom, which, without Whispernet, is really only good for searching. Reading books on the Kindle DX is a pleasure. That it also doubles as a reader for business-oriented documents like PDFs and DOCs is a great bonus. This is a top-notch device, but I have to deduct points for Whispernet not working outside the US.

With features borrowed from its predecessor, the FinePix S5 Pro, Fujifilm’s FinePix S100FS is a bridge camera that seriously blurs the line between DSLRs and point and shoot cameras. It’s not the cheapest camera in the market, nor is it the most expensive, but the colours it produces are perfect, if not more vivid than in real life. The S100FS has a comfortable rubberised contour grip, so this DSLR-look-alike body fits comfortably in your hands. The lens is a pleasing 28 to 400mm, 14.3x zoom, equivalent to a 35mm film camera. This versatile zoom lens is mechanically stabilised, which prevents photo shakes and video recording mishaps. The large sensor (2/3-inch) and lens combination give crystal-clear images, with no distortion or vignetting. There is quite considerable purple fringing
though, which is a drawback. Another nice feature on the S100FS is its articulating 2.5-inch flexible LCD display. RAW performance is excellent at 1fps, and an impressive 3fps in continuous mode. The macro function on the camera is fantastic, and you can pretty much touch the subject with your lens and still maintain focus. The S100FS incorporates Film Simulation Mode, which comes in quite handy for taking photos of nature. It reproduces immensely popular colour tones of Velvia, PROVIA and Soft films. And along with the Dynamic Range Bracketing and the AE Bracketing, the S100FS becomes useful for high-level photography. Apart from bracketing, there is a choice of 14 different scene settings (SP1, SP2) optimized for each subject type. Overall, it’s a great camera for outdoor photography, perfect for all serious amateurs and some pros looking for stunning rich colours.

iPod nano 5th Generation by Magnus | magnus@shufflegazine.com After using the new nano for a few days I can say that it’s a really sweet iPod with some amazing extras. On the outside there is little new. The display on the new nano is 0.2-inches larger than before, and there is a camera lens and microphone appearing on the back of the nano. Something you don’t see, but it’s there, is a speaker underneath the aluminum. It is a good addition, but it produces rather poor sound. The slightly wider screen makes watching video on the nano a not-so-horrible task, in fact it works pretty well and video looks very good. Recording video is where the killer new feature is with the nano. It records 640x480 pixels at 30fps, H.264 codec, 44.1kHz AAC audio. That translates into decent video, but it won’t replace a camcorder or even a digital camera that can record video. Apart from video, I’m most excited about the FM radio functionality. You can save
your favorite stations and even pause the radio and the nano will buffer up to 15 minutes of audio. You must have earphones attached as the nano uses it as antenna; it’s sometimes hard to get a clear reception, but moving the cord around a bit usually takes care of it. Everything is not perfect though, and I’ll deduct some points for this: it is unnecessarily complicated to get to start recording video and fingers easily get in the way of the lens. Most mobile phones have a button dedicated to taking a picture or start recording video. Apple should have found a better solution than to have to go through the menus to the video camera and start recording. It just takes too long. But other than that and the fact that you’ll find that your fingers get in the way of your video quite a lot- at least until you get used to the nano- I can’t find much to fault the new iPod for.

استمتعت كثيرآً باستخدامي لجهاز «آي بود نانو» الجديد مع مميزاته العديدة .لم يتغير فرد عائلة «آي بود» الظريف من الخارج كثيرًا ،حيث كبر حجم شاشة العرض فقط بمقدار ٠,٢بوصة مما جعلها أكثر راحة لمشاهدة األفالم ،بينما ظهرت عدسة الكاميرا الصغيرة والميكروفون على الجهة الخلفية من الجهاز .كذلك ،يحتوي الجهاز الجديد على سماعات تم إخفاؤها تحت غالف األلومينيوم؛ وإن قدمت صوتًا بنوعية رديئة. أهم ميزة يقدمها هذا الجهاز الجديد هو القدرة على تسجيل الفيديو ،حيث يمكن تسجيل فيديو بدقة ٤٨٠ x ٦٤٠بيكسل وبسرعة ٣٠إطار في الثانية ،مع ترميز إتش٢٦٤ . Apple’s MobileMe (www.mobileme. com) is an online service that includes an email account, 20GB of online storage, synching of bookmarks, Find my iPhone, and more. You can find competing services- many of them completely free- that do much of what MobileMe does, but for for Mac users there’s no other service that’s as easy to use and as integrated with Mac OS X, iPhone and iPod as MobileMe. With this article we want to give you an idea of what you can do with MobileMe as we think it offers a lot to Mac users.

Push, push, push To be honest, MobileMe’s email account is not the best email available so don’t buy MobileMe just for that. You get more functionality with Gmail, for example. It is an IMAP account however, which means you can have access to your email from your Mac and iPhone, as well as online. Where MobileMe’s email really shines is in ‘push’, if you have an iPhone or iPod touch. Push basically means that when an email arrives in your account your mobile device is automatically updated and you get a notification. If you have a Blackberry you know how it works. Remember though, that push can eat away at your batteries as well as data plan, so be careful. In addition to pushing email to your iPhone, MobileMe can also push contacts and calendars. That way, you always have the latest contact and schedule information on your iPhone, even between times that you sync it with your Mac. For someone on the go a lot, this is a very helpful functionality.

MobileMe quick tips نصائح سريعة Your MobileMe account comes with one email address, but you can also configure up to five aliases. Aliases look like real email addresses, but email sent to them go into your main account. In the MobileMe web interface you can set preferences much like in Mac OS X. Click the small preference button where available. You can create a new MobileMe photo gallery even without iPhoto and a Mac. Just go to the Gallery section of your MobileMe account. You can set your iDisk to sync to your Mac. That way you always have access to it even if you’re not online. The downside is that it takes up space on your hard drive. With a MobileMe account you have a data transfer limit of 200GB per month. If you need more than the 20GB storage or the 200GB in data transfer you can upgrade.

Sync info between Macs Many of you use multiple Macs on a daily basis. I’m a good example myself, with an iMac at home, a Mac Pro at work and a MacBook on the go. A problem with multiple Macs is to keep information in sync between them. If you add a bookmark in Safari on one Mac you want the same bookmark in Safari on your other computer too, right? MobileMe adds synchronization capabilities to your Mac so that you can keep email signatures, contacts, Dock items, Dashboard Widgets, Keychains, notes and calendars up to date between multiple Macs. There are also other applications, like Transmit that take advantage of this service. Did you know? MobileMe can trace its roots back to early 2000 when Apple launched iTools. It was a free service for Mac OS 8 and 9. In 2002, iTools became .Mac (“dot mac”) and it was no longer free. Containing many of the elements still in MobileMe today, like iDisk and email, .Mac was also much criticized for not keeping up with the competition. In 2008, .Mac became MobileMe and Apple has continued to refine and developed the service. Recently, when it was revealed that Apple bought a large data warehouse in North Carolina, USA, rumors intensified about it possibly being acquired because of future MobileMe expansion.

Galleries galore With a digital camera- even the one in iPhone- and iPhoto you have a great digital photography studio. Add to that MobileMe, and you have the simplest photo-publishing setup as well. Once the photos are in iPhoto, it’s just a few clicks before they’re on their way to an online photo gallery on your iDisk. If you later want to add photos to a gallery, you just drag them over to the gallery in the sidebar, then they’ll be added by MobileMe. MobileMe galleries have functionality beyond just displaying photos. You can password protect them, decide whether viewers should be able to download photos and whether they should be able to participate with their own photos. That last part is, I fear, not very well known. When you create an album, you can open it up so that others can email their photos of that particular subject and the photos will be added to that album. This even works from iPhone, which is really cool. Finally, consider that you can, from the comfort of your own sofa, enjoy MobileMe galleries on your TV set using an AppleTV. It doesn’t even require a Mac to be involved.

File sharing With a MobileMe account you get 20GB of storage space, which you split between storage of files, galleries, etc. and email. If you log in to the MobileMe preferences online, you get to decide how much space you allocate to email, and the rest will go to iDisk. One thing about iDisk that few MobileMe users know about is the ability to share files with other users. Once a file is on your iDisk, locate the file with the MobileMe web interface, click on the file and then select Share. There you can select your recipients and whether the download should be password protected. When you’re done MobileMe will email a link to the recipients. This way there’s no need to email big files anymore, which can be very convenient.

Personal domain If you have a web site created with iWeb, you might want it available through your own domain name. And you can and it’s easy. First you need to register your domain name with, for example, Godaddy.com. Then in the Account Settings part of your online MobileMe account, click on Personal Domain and enter the domain you want to use. You also need to make one change to your domain wherever it’s registered. If you’ve not set up a personal domain with MobileMe before there are instructions for what to do. Basically you need to set the CNAME to «web.me.com». How you do this is different for various domain registrars so check with your registrar for what to do.

If you're unfortunate enough to loose your iPhone, there is hope with the “Find My iPhone” service. Log in to your account at mobileme.com, click on the Account Settings icon then click on “Find My iPhone”. If everything works you will see the location of your iPhone in a map. For Find My iPhone to work you have to have a data connection enabled and push turned on. From the same page you can also remotely wipe or lock your iPhone. There's even a way for you to send a message to or play a sound on your iPhone.

Back to my Mac
The Back to my Mac service offers you the ability to connect to your Mac at home, Time Capsule or AirPort Disk, from anywhere on the Internet. You could get files off of a shared folder or use Screen Sharing to control a Mac remotely. It’s in theory a very good idea, but I’ve had little luck with getting it to work. The main problem is that network equipment, like routers, need to be appropriately configured for Back to my Mac to work.

iDisk App for iPhone by Paul Castle | Paul@Shufflegazine.com Every once in a while, you get something nice handed to you out of the blue. Apple’s release of the iDisk app for iPhone and iPod touch was very much like that for me. Although limited compared to some similar apps, its integration with MobileMe makes it a very worthwhile tool if you subscribe to that service. With it you can easily manage your iDisk from your iPhone/iPod touch, deleting files and even sending links to share files with others, as well as setting bookmarks to other’s public folders for future use. More importantly you can view files such as documents and PDFs, making it a great onthe-go tool for work. Also you can stream music and movies you have stored one-at-a-time, as long as they are in the formats supported by the iPhone. This extends the media capacity available for your device at the expense of some bandwidth. Note that this is basically an online viewer; it does not allow you to download files to your iPhone or upload from it. But for a MobileMe user this is still one of the easiest ways to use your files between your Apple devices, making the service that much more useful.

New projectors from NEC Just in time for GITEX in Dubai, NEC Display Solutions will launch a series of new projectors: NP305, NP310, NP405, NP410, NP410W, NP510, NP510WS, NP610 and NP610S. All the new projectors puts an emphasis on environmental friendliness with lamps that last up to 5000 hours and with extended filter cleaning intervals. In Eco Mode, turned on by pressing a special button, the projectors will operate in a more power-efficient manner than previous generations of projectors. The first model in the range to be released, the NP510W, has a brightness of 3,000 ANSI Lumens, contrast ratio of 500:1 and a native resolution of 1280x800 pixels.

Western Digital introduces “show and tell” space
In collaboration with Shufflegazine, Western Digital will give away four 150GB, 10,000 RPM VelociRaptor hard drives among visitors to the “show and tell” space.

Western Digital Corporation (WDC) will for the first time have their own “show and tell” space at GITEX this year. It is located in the Ajman Meeting Room A, B, and C and takes place October 19-21 between 9am and 5pm. The “show and tell” space will feature a special section dedicated to Apple and what Western Digital has to offer Apple customers in terms of storage solutions, whether they are internal or external. On display will be Macs with Western Digital products for visitors to try out.

Samsung will bring a wide range of products to their GITEX presence, including mobile phones, TVs, computers, printers and more. The Omnia II, arguably Samsung’s flagship mobile phone, with a 3.7-inch AMOLED screen, TouchWiz 2.0 interface, and 48GB of storage is sure to be of interest to visitors. In TVs, Samsung’s Series 7 LED HDTVs will be on display. Available in 40, 46 and 55-inch models, their Energy Star v3.0 compliant design cuts power consumption by over 40% compared to traditional LDC HDTVs. Samsung’s SMX-R10 camcorder, which we at Shufflegazine have tested, has an innovative design in which the lens is angled 25 degrees allowing for more comfortable operation. In the field of digital still cameras the ST550 is set to impress with dual LCD displays, one on the front and one on the back. A 12.2-megapixel sensor and a 27mm Schneider-KREUZNACH lens add to the camera’s attractiveness. Software Update troubleshooting by Dr. Michel Pasquier, American University of Sharjah
This is a follow-up to my comments on the EmiratesMac.com forums, just to share some experience that might be helpful to anyone having problems with Software Update on their Mac. ('SU' hereafter.) The specific problem reported is that SU was taking forever to download an update, in effect never completing the task and preventing any further updates altogether. Now, one good thing to know about SU is how it figures out which Apple software is up-to-date, or not. The trick is that for every installed or updated software there will be a corresponding package file in the /Library/Receipts folder. Such files have the '.pkg' extension. If you remove such a file, then run SU, it will offer you to apply that one update again.
space. (That folder is 1.2GB on my one-year old iMac!) That is because those packages are also used for other purposes besides SU, for instance by Disk Utility to figure out the correct permissions to apply when you do a 'Repair Disk Permissions'. While on the topic of fixing Software Update, another possible and related fix consists of downloading the latest Mac OS X Combo Updater from Apple support site and run it on your installation. Combining this approach with the above, one would delete all receipts older than the release date of the Combo Updater, update Mac OS X, then run SU- which should now work- and repeat as needed to get the software up-to-date again. Another possible solution, assuming one does backup regularly- for example, using the excellent built-in Time Machine app- is to restore your system back to a point in time where SU was still working properly. This is similar to the previous method, but allows a more fine-grained approach, going progressively backward in time until everything works again. Of course if you reinstall Mac OS X entirely chances are the /Library/Receipts folder will be cleaned and Software Update will work again. But that's a very drastic step to take, and you might want to try the above fixes first.
Slow network connection, or a very busy server, might occasionally give the impression that Software Update is hanging.
So when Software Update doesn't work anymore, one possible fix worth trying is to remove the latest '.pkg' file in the /Library/Receipts folder, try SU again, and see if that does it. (Obviously you'd want to examine /Library/Receipts in List View, in reverse order of Date Modified.) If it doesn't, you may try removing the next most recent '.pkg' file and try again, and so on, until it works again. When that happens it means one update got corrupted along the way. (But usually it would be the latest one anyway.) One more thing, as some would say, is that you might also want to check the content of /Library/ Updates for partially downloaded update files, and delete those before running SU again. That is because some file therein may be the one corrupted, rather than the receipt itself, and obviously it won't do any good to keep using it. Be warned though that, in general, one should refrain from tampering with the content of /Library/Receipts, even for the purpose of saving disk
Lastly, and for the sake of completeness, I must mention that a very slow network connection, or a very busy server on the Apple side, might also occasionally give the impression that Software Update is hanging. That happened to me once, so I thought it appropriate to point it out.
