The demand of alternative materials of the traditional leather and textiles which are bio degradable and sustainable is growing in the fashion industry day by day. It is realized that the unbearable stress which fashion industries have produced on our planet needs to be given some importance. So to propose a substitute in same regards, this report includes several explorations made with various techniques to grow mycelium from locally available mushroom.

The idea was to create a biofabric which resembles to leather but is eco-friendly. The experiment was designed keeping in mind the sustainability factors of the end result. The selection of raw materials played a vital role.

Mycelium was successfully grown in the Potato Dextrose Broth(PDB) which is the major substrate. The appropriate environment was created to check a good yield. Several samples were prepared with two major substrates in addition with diffrerent elements. Each combination exhibited a different result. The final samples were dried to compare the end product of different methods. Furthermore, the work will focus on bio fabrication through the same architecture to produce the samples at a larger scale. Comparisons can be made with the properties of traditional leather. Further, depending upon the nature of the final sample, products can be developed.

INTRODUCTION Mycelium-based materials are grown by two alternative methods. First, by exploiting the abilities of mycelium to interlock other substances within its network to form a bulk material (mycelium-based composites) or harvesting a liquid culture of mycelium.

The composite culture of mycelium requires the appropriate substrate to provide it with nutrient, carbon, nitrogen, and filaments.

These substrates are generally categorised as agricultural or organic wastes (like wheat, rice straw) which colonizes with the hyphae of the mushroom to create a dense solid structure. This process requires a suitable amount of water and humidity which in one of the most essential ingredients of growing the composite structure.

Secondly, Pure mycelium is obtained from the liquid culture also called as the liquid fermentation. It is generally grown in jars/petri dishes containing the liquid culture at adequate conditions in a static form. The filamentous fungi creates a mat of cotton like fibers on the top of the culture.

The basic method used to create different samples is PDB (Potato dextrose broth) in which different substrates were added in order to experiment and observe the growth of mycelium in various substrates.The main substrate used for the growth mycelium is PDB which is a broth of potatoes. The soul reason behind choosing potatoes is that they are rich in sugar and starch which can be easily digested by the mushrooms and acts as a favourable substrate for the mushrooms to grow.

The mushroom used in this experiment is Agaricus bisporus commonly used as Paris mushrooms but the experiment can also be conducted using Pleurotus ostreatus or G. Lucidium.

Structure influences the density of the mycelium growth.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS Each sample was observed and markings as well as comments were made on the basis of their appearances.

Each combination was examined separately and time line tables were prepared to illustrate the growth till the final sample was obtained in hand. The final result was influenced by several factors. Different samples showed different results because of the conditions in which it was cultured.

CONCLUSION Through this experiment we can conclude that, the mycelium and its nature can be explored to create a interlinked fabric like structure. Liquid culture is the accurate way to obtain a thin fabric like structure. Further manipulations can be made to change the appearance of the result by adding dyes and nonwovens to the substrate. The nonwoven provides surface support to the mycelium when it is taken out to dry. Flax allowed the mycelium to interlink into it, so they both cannot be separated even after drying but on the other hand the white nonwoven (PET/PA6) did not allow mycelium to

grow inside it as it has a compact structure. The final yield needs to be dried in order to eliminate the moisture presence from PDB solutuon.

Yet to better evaluate the suitability of PDB/PDA for more particular applications, additional analytical methods should be used. There is a need to develop a further set of parameters (physical, chemical and visual) of the samples to understand their relations with one another and its impact on final material properties.Futher, A set of finishing applications can be done on the fabric to obtain a more suitable biofabric.

ABOUT VIKING GARMENTS The company has been running since 23 years.

The tannery itself is over 15 years old. They export leather as well as ready leather garments and products to Germany and the United States. Their design house is thriving while the tannery is not doing so well anymore.

After the unfortunate demise of the owner in early 2018, the tannery has decided to shut operations from August 1, 2018.

The company used to sell wet blue hides as well as finished leather. Their second unit has now been set up in Gurugram.

The company also prides itself in having been approved by top brands like Marks and Spencers and Zara. They own a personal brand called “Viking” in Spain where their leather products are sold directly through a storefront. They were also recently awarded the best exporters National Award.

Viking Garments is a National Award winning co-corporation that is a government recognized star export house. They facilitate all processes from capturing a hide to tanning, processing and finishing the leather. Viking Garments also further have a design house that helps them finish and create garments that are exported worldwide.

OPERATING PROCESS OF THE TANNERY In the beam house operations, the skins and hides received mostly in the wet salted conditions in the tannery are processed to remove unwanted materials such as hair, flesh and other protein materials. Pretanning processes include - Selection, Trimming, Weighing, Soaking, Unhairing, Liming, Bating, Deliming.

In the tanning process, conversion of pre-tanned hides into leather takes place.After this process we obtained WET BLUE. It imparts the resistance against bacterial degradation and improves the durability. The most popular tanning processes are Chrome tanning and Vegetable tanning.

After tanning, excess water is removed from the hides.

Hides are then graded according to the quantity and locations of natural features and flaws.. Aniline and Nubuck leathers demand the best quality hides. Heavily coated or embossed leather can utilize a lesser quality of hides.

Finally, finishing provides surface protection against rubbing, abrasion and staining. The defects of the grain are covered by the protective coat and hence the cutting value is also very much enhanced.

•Pigmented (Protected Leather) – This leather will feel almost like plastic .

• Semi-Aniline Leather – This leather will feel a little light and smooth, but will not feel heavily treated.

• Aniline Leather – This leather will feel the lightest and smoothest as it has not received any treatment

• Pigmented (Protected Leather) – Water will sit or bead up on the surface and not soak in.

• Semi-Aniline Leather – Water drop will sit on the surface and then slowly soak in.

• Aniline Leather – Water drop will soak into the leather almost immediately.

ENVIORNMENTAL EFFECTS Impact of Gaseous Pollutants on the environment noxious smell, hydrogen sulphide and dust which cause a nuisance effect.

Effect on streams Sulphide present in the liquid wastes are injurious to fish and other aquatic lives in streams. The discharge of tannery waste into surface water has increased their salinity in objectionable levels.

Effect on groundwater The groundwater is reported to be unfit for drinking and irrigation where tanneries are concentrated together.

Effect on Sewers and STPs incrustations of sewers, sewer clogging and other forms of interference with sewage treatment.

Impact of Solid wastes into the environment Salt dust, if stored in heaps outside the tanneries, is likely to be washed away during rain and cause water pollution.

Hair and lime sludge discharged along with the effluents are likely to choke the drains.

Ethnographic study of a cluster in Barmer, Rajasthan with artisans to understand and document their culture and craft through interviews, photo documentation and interaction by spending 10 days at the location.

INTRODUCTION TO BARMER AND WOOD CARVING People of Barmer prove to be the epitome of simplicity. However, most of the city is gradually falling prey to increasing urbanization while their intrinsic traditional way of living life gives a new charm to the city.

The town of Barmer is the centre for rich craft and cultures. One will find in abundance; woodcraft, pottery, carpets, intricate embroidery work, block printed fabrics and multihued traditional costumes. For many artisans, craft is more than just a source of income. Sometimes it’s an expression of their culture and identity. In fact, Barmer is the only district in all of Rajasthan where ajrakh exists.

Barmer has become a very important location for carved furniture. The origin of carving can be traced back to stone age where inscriptions were made.

The most important feature of wood carving is the intricate designs and attention to details.

There are a few standard motifs which are put in patterns and are repeated. After the wood is cut to desired size, the markings are made for the designs. Various specialized hand tools are used to painstakingly carve the wood with intricacy and precision. The completed items are finished by sanding, and then applications of strainers and spirit polishes which is topped by a coat of melamine.

One of the biggest problems faced by the craftsmen at Vijay Laxmi Handicrafts is of retaining their identity as handicrafts artisans under the aegis of the bigger commercial trader under which they work, who often try burgeoning and gaining profits from their work by buying cheap labour and selling the commodity at high prices in the markets.

We as students on our levels, tried to sensitize the artisans who are actually delivering the craft, about this threat and we realized how gaining recognition as individual craftsmen could help them gain a better exposure to the dying market so that they value their own crafts and not sell it off in cheap prices. For them their crafts remain a mere source of daily income not something of great value to them.

We made personal profiles for each of these artisans working n the unit, along with their work experiences and economic background in our cluster document.

A STORY WITH BRAND BOARD

BOX 1 Beautifully carved on the wood of Barmer also known as Saghvan is the lid of this gift box. The box contains a finely made ajrakh stole and tie which serves right to be gifted to age groups of 25 and above along with an infographic of the craft of Ajrakh and woodcarving being practiced in the small town of Rajasthan.

BOX 2 The box revives the feelings of the past by preserving the game of chaupar once played in Mahabhart and which continued for centuries. The paws and dies are intricately carved by the artisans of Barmer and aesthetically presented in a box made out of waste wood carved pieces. The idea was to bring to life the essence of the forgotten and accompany it with creating the best out of waste.

Triburg Undertook a 8 weeks internship at one of the largest buying houses in India. Assisted the senior leather merchandiser to oversee end to end sourcing services of the leather design department.

MY ROLE As an Senior Merchandiser in the Leather Department, Mrs. Akanksha Gupta took my internview and hirred me as her assistant at Triburg Apparels. My role primarily was a merchandising intern. I started off with a lot of research and understanding of the company and slowly started doing more hands on work like making QA files and assisting my seniors in their day to day work. I had to regulary make PPT’s for the buyers of the exisiting products offered by the company’s vendors like Century Overseas and Jak Group.

Another big project was designing and getting samples made for the Magic Fair happening in Las Vegas in February. I was assigned to make mood boards and trend boards for the potential buyers.

Continous research of trends and new styles were done on WGSN and Vogue. Various brands were studied and trend boards were developed keeping in mind the product feasability for the market and the time period for development of the new product.

I was also assigned to study some products closely and make cost sheets and techpacks for the old styles still standing the potential for orders.

TREND FORECASTING A set of trend boards were sent to the buyers after studying the customer boards sent by them. The new shapes and trends were studied. Then on the basis of the replies from the brand, a new set of boards were made to the buyer of the existing products offered by Triburg’s vendors.

THEME BOARD If something is considered extremist or very different from anything that has come before it, call it radical. The theme Radical Futurism talks about the situation of the current market which is in constant need for a change. It uses different texture and sillhouttes that have never been imagined before and stand out in all forms to make a statement.

Various silhouettes and designs were experimented to create radical and experimental garments fulfilling needs of the present market as well as fitting into the brand and its identity.

THEME BOARD This specie may seem like in a healthy number but unfortunately three species are already extinct, two are critically endangered and many more are seriously declining in numbers.

CONCEPT AND DESIGN THE CRAFT OF BLOCK PRINTING

Globally there are more honey bees than other types of bee and pollinating insects, so it is the world’s most important pollinator of food crops. It is estimated that one third of the food that we consume each day relies on pollination mainly by bees, but also by other insects, birds and bats.

For crops such as blueberries and almonds, the honey bee plays an essential role in pollination of commercial crops, with around 80% of the US crop said to be dependent on honey bees.

Honey bees can also pollinate clover and alfalfa, which are fed to cattle, so there are implications for the meat and dairy industry too. And that is not to mention the huge range of manufactured food products made from all these ingredients.

In addition, honey bees play a significant role in the pollination of other important crops such as cotton and flax. And there are also a number of valuable non-food products produced by the honey bee, such as beeswax used in cleaning and beauty products .

The idea of the project is to bring forward the extinction of bees in the world and to realise their importance for humans. There are many ways in one can help in the community, such as: -Plant bee-friendly plants in your garden.

-Support organic farmers who do not use chemicals on their crops.

-Spread the word about the importance of bees and their declining population
