A: When it comes to choosing a dress, there is no rule without exception. Some say that if you are pear shaped, then you should stick to an A-line silhouette to minimize the hips. That being said, if you want to wear a fit-to-flare dress and show off your curves, my advice is to go that route. The key is finding the perfect neckline; something that is a little wider across the top of the bustline, such as Maggie Sottero’s Chante or Marianne gown, will balance the hips and create an hourglass shape. If you are petite, you may be told that a ball gown will overpower your smaller stature, but this isn’t necessarily true. You should match the volume of your skirt to your height and be the princess you’ve always wanted to be! The bottom line is that you should try on all different shapes and styles. Trust your consultant and you will find the perfect gown. In some cases, the most flattering style is the one you least expect.

A: Typically, during an initial email inquiry or in-person consultation at Academy Florist, our customers are unsure what to budget for wedding flowers. Because every couple has a unique vision for flowers and their special day, we customize every single wedding order. Our customers are looking for items such as large focal arrangements, centrepieces, bouquets, boutonnières, corsages, garlands, wreaths, hairpieces, cake flowers or guest book table arrangements for their wedding ceremony and reception venues. We do our very best to accommodate every budget, suggest how to best allocate funds and present options that are in keeping with the their vision. A wedding flower budget can range anywhere from $500 to $5,000. A little creativity and experience combined with a carefully thought out plan can turn a vision into reality while staying within budget.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! WITH MANUEL F. SOUSA PHOTOGRAPHY Q: How far in advance do we need to book our wedding photographer?
A: I generally suggest booking your photographer anywhere from one year to 18 months ahead of your wedding date to be safe. Of course it all depends on certain factors. For example, what time of year is it? Is it on a weekend or weekday? Is it a destination wedding? Once you know which photographer you want for your wedding day, don’t procrastinate and take the chance that someone else will book them first. It will be a good feeling knowing that it’s booked and that you can cross that job off your list. You have lots of other things to think about for your wedding day!

ON LOCATION WITH PLANNED PERFECTLY
Q: How many different colours should we incorporate into our wedding ceremony and reception venues?
A: Every wedding is unique, and bringing together all of your favourite design and décor details can be challenging. Tables and seating occupy a large portion of the wedding reception venue, so approach these items with care. The linen, décor and chair covers should not take away from the cohesiveness of the venue or compete with the main focal points. For example, a bright sash on the chairs may distract from the centrepiece. If you have a subtle palette, you can get away with three or four tones of the same colour, but when you are going bold, keeping the selection down to two colours allows the centrepieces to pop and the theme to shine. A great way to subtly bring in more colour is with reception stationery such as table numbers, menus, place cards and your seating chart. As well, accent tables such as a guest book, cake or candy table are a great place to bring in another colour or texture, adding to your overall feel without it becoming a distraction. f you’re engaged to be married and trying to figure out where to start with planning a wedding, the 26th annual Wonderful Wedding Show, presented by Hudson’s Bay, is the place to be. One of Canada’s largest wedding shows, the show features over 120,000 square feet of wedding vendors, plus special feature areas, prizes and daily fashion shows. “The Wonderful Wedding Show has become a tradition for Manitoba couples to help plan their big day,” says show manager Sherri Rheubottom. “Planning a wedding can be overwhelming so our goal is to help simplify the process for couples and their wedding parties, while at the same time make it a fun and memorable experience.” Some of the fun features at the show include the Swank Brides Lounge with wine sampling from Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, music, and Swank Event Rentals showcasing the latest lounge furniture and décor trends that many couples are currently incorporating into their weddings. Brides aren’t the only ones who get special treatment at the show – the guys also have their own special area to take a break, hang out and watch TV in the Grooms Lounge courtesy of EPH Apparel. Even the exhibitors get to have some fun in the Inspiration Gallery as they compete in the “Table Wars” contest where brides get to vote for their favourite tablescape design. The daily fashion shows are a main highlight, showcasing the latest bridal fashion trends from the city’s leading retailers. “Most brides will tell you the most important decision they’ll have to make for their wedding is finding the perfect dress,” says Sherri. “Looking at photos of gowns is a good start to figuring out what style might suit you best, but actually seeing the dresses in person during the fashion show really gives brides a better idea about how the dress actually looks and fits.” Be sure to visit all of our wonderful wedding vendors at the show and on our new website, www.wonderfulweddingshow.com, for expert advice, services and products 365 days of the year.

ever in a million years did Lisa expect a “fairytale” proposal from Jonathon. He suggested a visit to The Butchart Gardens when he and Lisa were on a trip in Victoria, BC. After walking through the gardens, Lisa heard Jonathon clear his throat. When she turned around, he was on one knee, ring in hand. She shouted “YES!” before he even spoke a word. When September 25, the anniversary of their first date, became available for their wedding venue, they knew it was the perfect day to get married. They chose a wedding theme that captured softness and romance instead of traditional autumn colours. Grey was the main colour, which they paired with metallics, greenery, soft-toned blooms and hints of dark dahlias to add depth.

ominique and Brad, best friends for 12 years, would often meet at Assiniboine Park for roller blading and walks around the park. They spent years as friends, before finally deciding to date. Brad wasted no time before proposing at their favourite roller blading meeting place. The following year, they walked down the aisle at The Formal Garden at Assiniboine Park on a beautiful summer day and tied the knot! Dominique and Brad’s wedding colours were black and white, simple and classic. They used the infinity symbol as their wedding theme, since they got married on 08-08 (August 8), and the number eight looks like the infinity symbol. askiran “Jasue” and Harjot “Prince” first met while studying at the University of Alberta Law Library in the winter of 2010. They studied together for the following two years, before Prince moved back to Winnipeg. Jasue graduated a year later and moved back home to Winnipeg where their relationship was rekindled. One evening, Jasue’s friend brought her to what she believed was a film festival at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Much to her surprise – and excitement – this was a misdirection. Instead, she was treated to a wonderful trailer movie style proposal, capped off with Prince’s live proposal. The proposal was a true reflection of Prince’s personality: larger than life and genuinely thoughtful. This larger than life feeling didn’t end there. With colourful wedding festivities in both Winnipeg and Edmonton, they celebrated with hundreds of family members and friends from around the globe. Jasue and Prince described their wedding as a true celebration of their love for each other, as well as a unity between their two wonderful families.

parks began to fly when elementary school friends, Courtney and Braidan, crossed paths again at the age of 20. After a few years of dating, Braidan invited Courtney to join him at Falcon Lake for Valentine’s Day. Braidan cleared an ice rink on the frozen lake and built a chiffondraped white arbor adorned with twinkling lights. While skating under the stars that night, Braidan got down on one knee and proposed to Courtney. Courtney and Braidan got married in St. John Brebeuf Roman Catholic Parish, which houses the elementary school where they first met. For the reception, The Metropolitan Entertainment Centre was transformed into an enchanted winter wonderland with a sea of white, crystal and frosty shades of blue. The newlyweds felt like royalty sitting at the head table in their King and Queen chairs, surrounded by the love of family and friends.
