This issue’s cover brought to you by:

The EOTECH Vudu 1-10x28mm Riflescope Delivers Flexibility for Any Situation The new EOTECH Vudu 1-10x28mm riflescope delivers outstanding performance and durability in all environments while offering first focal plane (FFP) advantages and 1-10x power versatility. FFP scopes provide many benefits, and the Vudu 1-10x28 FFP reticles make full use of this advanced design. The Vudu’s wide magnification range and rapid zooming allow the user to balance shooting speed with precision. When combined with a choice of three modern reticles, the Vudu 1-10x28mm precision riflescope is a clear choice for close- to medium-range targets— and everything in between. The 1-10x magnification range is another desirable feature of this riflescope. At 1x, its wide field of view, generous eye relief, and signature EOTECH Speed Ring is the ultimate setup for enhanced situational awareness and rapid shot transitions. At the other end of the spectrum, its 10x magnification and detailed reticle allow precise holdover shots at extended ranges. With FFP scopes, the reticle grows as magnification increases. At high power, the reticle is an optical tape measure for estimating distance and precisely aiming holdover shots; at low magnification, the eye focuses on the bold, illuminated EOTECH Speed Ring for snap shots and quick follow-ups. The Vudu 1-10x28mm riflescope is available with a choice of three illuminated reticles. The SR-4 uses MOA-based subtension marks for ranging, holdover, and windage corrections at higher powers, and the Speed Ring’s red aiming dot allows for rapid shots at the lower power setting. The SR-5 is an MRADgraduated Christmas-tree style reticle for more precise windage and elevation holds. The LE-5 is similar to the SR-5, but features a familiar crosshair inside the Speed Ring rather than a single dot. On the left side of the scope, a push-button reticle illumination

system provides intuitive controls; one button is for on/off; the others control brightness settings. Depending on the reticle, scope turrets are calibrated and adjustable in either 0.25 MOA or 0.1 MIL increments, offering precision and fast dial adjustments. After zeroing, its re-indexing feature sets the turret dial scale to zero, allowing for quick resets in the field without the need to remember a numeric turret location. The elevation turret offers a simple push-pull locking system, and the windage is capped to prevent inadvertent changes. Like all Vudu riflescopes, the 1-10x28mm riflescope uses a rigid aircraft-grade aluminum tube with a hard-anodized finish. The scope is shock-, waterand fog-resistant and features the EOTECH Vudu Precision Riflescope No BS Warranty. SRP: $1,799.

EDITOR’S NOTE

The Local Option

Bypassing neighborhood merchants in favor of online providers leaves a community poorer.

L

ike many of us over the past two years, I ended up buying a lot of products from online providers. Doing so was fast and convenient, and it allowed my household to function during the first phases of the pandemic when I didn’t want to venture out much. I must say, it was nice to have products come to me rather than me go to them.

But over the past couple of months, as I began to re-engage with the world, I saw what a toll the pandemic had taken on local businesses in my town. So, I resolved to buy local as much as possible. That led me to a Stihl dealer when I needed to buy a battery-operated chain saw. When I went through the door, and heard the faded and worn floorboards creak loudly underfoot, I felt like I had walked back in time to the hardware stores of my youth. Best of all, behind the counter were a husband-and-wife team who knew their stuff. They helped me quickly identify and select precisely what I needed to get the job done. I also noticed a host of local tree-service professionals in line, always a good sign of a retailer’s expertise. Yes, I

paid a premium for giving this store my business, but I came away richer for the experience. That all came to mind when I recently saw a Linked In post on buying local from Kenyon Gleason, president of NASGW. (Here, a tip of the hat to Chris Dolnack of the NSSF, who alerted me to the post.) Gleason touched on a number of salient points regarding buying online versus buying local. After acknowledging the convenience of conducting online purchases, he noted the downside—that such purchases can hurt a local gun shop. “...folks in our industry please just consider as much as possible the broader implications of ignoring our small family owned and main street gun shops, along with local businesses outside of our industry. When we choose to buy things online, which are available close to home, we are putting at risk a lot more than we might realize. If a local gun shop is relegated to just the ‘gun transfer hub’ because folks are buying all their ancillary products online, what incentive does that business have to remain open at all? I’d prefer not to have them even consider closing the doors. Government regulation makes staying in business hard enough. We don’t need to make it harder for them by doing all our shopping online.” He also noted that all that money going to online entities does not trickle back into our communities. “Those giant online behemoths are not supporting the local baseball and soccer teams or donating money to keep the fields and facilities looking good. They certainly aren’t paying taxes or employees locally. Those companies are probably not assisting the local American Legion with its programs or the local gun range with new targets or upgraded benchrests.” But local merchants do just that. Let’s all help keep them in business.

CIMARRON FIREARMS SUPPORTS THE TEXAS RANGERS HERITAGE CENTER

Cimarron Firearms, makers of quality replicas of Old West firearms, recently introduced the Cimarron 1911 One Ranger in .45 ACP. Engraved on the 4.25-inch barrel is a quote attributed to the legendary Texas Rangers: “One Riot One Ranger.” Based on the original design by legendary firearms maker John M. Browning, the Cimarron 1911 One Ranger pistol features the same innovative design features that made the 1911 an instant classic. The Cimarron One Ranger is a semi-automatic, single-action pistol with a skeletonized trigger and hammer, front dot sight and adjustable rear sight, grip safety, and extended beavertail and slide lock. Finished in a classic black matte with highly checkered wood grips, the Cimarron One Ranger is a beautifully crafted, precision handgun perfect for everyday carry. SRP: $747.50. Cimarron Firearms will donate a percentage of every sale of the Cimarron 1911 One Ranger pistol to the Former Texas Rangers Foundation to help build the Texas Rangers Heritage Center, located in Fredericksburg, Texas. The Heritage Center is a 26,000-square-foot facility on 12 acres of land. It is dedicated to preserving the lore of the Texas Rangers and working with the youth of Texas to instill the same value-based traits that defined Texas and the Texas Rangers.

CZ INTRODUCES THE SCORPION 3+ MICRO The CZ Scorpion EVO 3 set the standard for large-format 9mm pistols. The new 9mm CZ Scorpion 3+ Micro builds on those proven features, adding customerrequested upgrades. The fully redesigned pistol not only improves the Scorpion’s ergonomics and user-friendly operation, but it also incorporates advanced materials that are tougher and lighter than before. Ambidextrous controls are the gold standard in modern firearm design. In addition to the ambidextrous safety found on the EVO 3, the Scorpion 3+ includes an ambidextrous bolt catch, which allows the user to operate it left- or right-handed. In addition, the new AR-style mag release is accessible on both sides. The new ergonomic grip design makes it a more comfortable shooting experience for the user. The M-Lok handguard is now upgraded from aluminum to polymer to reduce heat transfer. A slimmed-down

upper receiver accommodates more options when attaching different accessories to replace the end cap. A redesigned magwell is resized, adding more purchase on the handguard for large or gloved hands. The adjustable four-aperture aluminum sights are updated to deliver lower one-third cowitness with popular red dots, providing a better sight picture and reliable backup. CZ also added recessed texture to the magazine for positive purchase during reloads. Users will also notice a locking window on the mag body that accommodates the new AR-style mag release. New Scorpion 3+ magazines are also compatible with previous generations of the Scorpion. The 4.2-inch cold-hammer-forged barrel is threaded 1⁄2x28 and comes equipped with a removable flash can. All in all, this is an extremely compact pistol designed for maneuverability in tight quarters. SRP: $1,299. (cz-usa.com)

ATN MOVES TO FLORIDA American Technology Network (ATN), an industry leader of innovative optics for civilian, law enforcement, and military use, has relocated its headquarters and manufacturing facilities from California to Doral, Florida. The move was necessitated by the rapid expansion and growth the company has seen since its founding in 1995. “This move is a continuation of ATN’s mission to bring feature-rich products to market,” says Marc Vayn, ATN’s chief marketing officer. “Innovation is central to ATN, and this new step allows the company to deliver high-quality products to its customers in a more efficient manner.”

The Florida facility is highlighted by a technically advanced manufacturing floor, expansive warehouse, streamlined shipping area, improved warranty center, and high-tech R&D facilities. (atncorp.COM)

BERETTA TO ACQUIRE RUAG AMMOTEC

B

eretta Holding Group has signed a binding agreement to acquire 100 percent of RUAG Ammotec, the leading European provider for small-caliber ammunition manufacturing and distribution and owner of such prestigious brands as RWS, Norma, Rottweil, and Geco. “This is a very special moment in the history of our group,” said Pietro Gussalli Beretta, president and CEO of Beretta Holding. “Having worked almost three years on this project, we warmly welcome the more than 2,700 employees of RUAG Ammotec to our group. We clearly recognize that RUAG Ammotec is a very good cultural fit with our group, and a strong, competent, and experienced management is in place. This will tremendously help to integrate RUAG Ammotec into our group.” Beretta also notes that there “is an excellent strategic fit between RUAG Ammotec and the Beretta Holding Companies. We have the firearms and the optics; RUAG Ammotec has the ammo. There is almost no overlap. In R&D and distribution we will see strong synergies, especially in the long run that is for our group always most important. Having RUAG Ammotec within Beretta Holding Group will also strengthen our European business and further increase our global footprint. Finally, this new addition to our group will add a substantial number of high-end brands to our existing portfolio of premium brands.” With this acquisition Beretta Holding Group will grow to more than 6,000 people. At the same time, the holding group is adding five

After this acquisition the group will have more than 50 subsidiaries all over the world. “Under our ownership Ruag Ammotec is still fully committed to deliver high-quality ammunition to the Bundeswehr and the Swiss Army. As requested by the Swiss Government, Beretta

Real Avid Launches Pro Shop Upgrade Program

R

eal Avid designs its packaging to provide maximum information on product application, use, and benefits. This approach to on-product consumer education makes product selection easy on the consumer and leads to increased sales. It is an increasingly important approach to retail merchandising as new gun owners wade through unfamiliar territory and are often reluctant to seek assistance. By combining attention-grabbing displays with comprehensive product information, retail customers can more quickly make informed purchasing decisions. The new Pro Shop Upgrade program, available to Real Avid dealers, is designed to help retailers simplify entry into the do-it-yourself arena for their walk-in customers by presenting the company’s innovative products through attention-grabbing displays and logical organization. This allows long-time gun owners and, more importantly, the wave of new gun owners, to confidently assess the tool and maintenance solutions they need. That, in turn, leads to

"The program enhances the overall consumer experience, promotes sales beyond r e a l av i d p r o d u c t s , a n d e l e vat e s t h e r e ta i l e r i n t h e e y e s of the customer."

solve their gun-maintenance needs. The result is maximized revenue for the store.” Steiner further notes that retailers who take advantage of the Real Avid Pro Shop Upgrade reap the rewards of more than just focused product sales. “The program enhances the overall consumer experience, promotes sales beyond Real Avid products, and elevates the retailer in the eyes of the customer.” “For example, a walk down most any big-box retailer reveals how difficult it can be to find the right product for the right firearm application. The informative product packaging, logical organization, and category structure of the Real Avid Pro Shop Upgrade allows veteran and novice customers alike to easily find what they are looking for and even discover items they don’t know they need. Furthermore, the comprehensive line of Real Avid products includes detailed descriptions and directions for product applications, benefits, and use, allowing customers to educate themselves in a retail environment with hands-on product evaluation and to prompt follow-up questions with knowledgeable staff.” But there are other benefits of the program as well.

As customers become more educated and their confidence builds through acquired knowledge, they become ready to tackle their own projects. That, by extension, leads to increased sales of firearm accessories. The Pro Shop Upgrade program essentially becomes a sales force multiplier for other product categories in the retail sphere. Here, Real Avid’s modern and educational packaging helps sell the product by answering customer questions; this is especially important now with more new gun owners entering the marketplace. Finally, the Pro Shop Upgrade offers several engaging merchandising options for displays to meet specific floor plans and traffic flow needs. This flexibility allows the retailer to make the most efficient use of space while ensuring high visibility and interaction with customers. “Dealers have several great choices of layouts, designs, and even custom planograms,” Steiner says. “Included with the order will be merchandising signage, mounting hardware, inventory backer cards, installation instructions, and a detailed planogram. To inquire about upgrading your space with a Real Avid Pro Shop or to become a Real Avid Dealer, please contact your local independent Real Avid sales representative or email proshop@realavid.com.” (realavid.com)

increased sales not only of Real Avid products, but also the multitude of aftermarket accessories and upgrade parts included in the retailers’ on-shelf inventories. “Our product packaging has always captured the attention of the consumer,” says Real Avid president Dave Steiner. “This Pro Shop Upgrade program amplifies our assortments and takes our in-store merchandising to a new level. These planogrammed assortments, with crisp merchandising elements, will set a high bar for how gun tools and gun-cleaning products should be presented, making it easier for the store and the consumer to find solutions and

XS

Sights has introduced the R3D Suppressor/RMR Height Sights for the popular HK VP9 Optics Ready pistol. These taller R3D sights are designed to allow a clear view of the target and accurate alignment while using a suppressor. They are also excellent back-up sights for optics and allow a lower one-third co-witness with the Holoson 507 series, Vortex Viper series, and Trijicon RMR series of red-dot sights. The XS R3D Night Sight offers a traditional three-dot tritium, notch-and-post sight picture with a notch that is 15 percent wider than the front sight. This design allows more visible light around the front sight, resulting in faster and more accurate target acquisition. Available with a bright orange front sight, made of XS’s Ember Glow Dot technology and a tritium center for dual illumination, the R3D sight is easy to see in changing light conditions and when shooting on the move. “Demand has been high for suppressor-height sights for the HK VP9 OR, and XS is pleased to be the first to introduce aftermarket night sights for this popular pistol,” says marketing manager Addison Monroe. “In addition to the R3D, we also offer a suppressorheight Minimalist Night Sight for the HK VP9 OR. This sight has a traditional notch-andpost sight picture, serrated non-tritium rear, and Glow Dot tritium front sight.” SRP: $143.

CORRECTION Dear Slaton White: I enjoyed the recent issue of SHOT Business (March/ April 2022), in particular the article on pioneer Melvin Forbes. However, I would like to correct one error in the article. The author states that Barrett copied elements of Forbes’ stock design. That’s inaccurate. Barrett purchased the stock design and other designs from Forbes Rifle LLC on January 21, 2016, and we continue to produce products based on those designs. SHOT business: What do you see as the biggest challenges facing the industry in the next five years?

Wayne Tumlin: Meeting the increase in con-

sumer demands for new and existing customers poses a multi-faceted challenge that affects all industry participants. We have to anticipate and manage the stress and disruptions to every segment of the supply chain. At Davidson’s, we try to manage those obstacles in a way that causes the least strain to our dealers and their customers. In addition, we will continue to have political challenges to our industry. Fortunately, our industry has a lot of experience dealing with the roadblocks that are thrown at us politically. Although we will incur a lot of expense and effort battling those attacks on our industry, we anticipate that the industry will be able to meet such challenges.

SB: What opportunities do you see? WT: Opportunities abound for our industry with respect to consumers. Currently, we are in an exceptional time to engage with first-time gun owners, including women and minorities. With this we can capitalize on the ability to enhance consumer education regarding gun safety, responsible firearms ownership, and participation in the shooting sports. Fostering education and responsibility through the industry’s extensive firearms training resources should fuel critical industry growth and serve our industry and the community at large. Sb: When you get up in the morning, what gets you excited about working in the industry? WT: The industry offers a uniquely competitive, but collegial environment. This is a fun industry, and it is unique in that our products are sold through various channels for hunting, shooting sports, self-defense, and law enforcement. It is dynamic and we regularly encounter challenges, but it is always encouraging to work alongside industry colleagues who are knowledgeable, resourceful, and equally committed to exceeding the high standards under which we all operate. being impacted by COVID-19. Our business, like others in the country, had to change the way we operate on a daily basis. We have more people working remotely, personnel challenges in our distribution centers due to illness and labor shortages, and various supply chain challenges. In order to meet these challenges, we cannot assume that the old way of doing things is still the correct way. So, we are constantly monitoring our business and seeking new and improved methods to reach and serve our customers.

Continuing open lines of communication, listening, and being nimble and responsive are key to meeting our customer expectations.

SB: Davidson’s has come a long way from its origin, in 1932, as a wholesaler of used auto parts. What do you think is the key to its longevity and success? WT: Looking back over the decades, and as we approach our 90th anniversary, it’s clear that a key to the company’s longevity has been the ability to adapt to changing consumer demands. We continue to devote resources and intelligence to innovation and carrying out critical strategic initiatives to enhance our services. All our efforts, however, are grounded in the priorities of relationship building, care for our customers, and serving the industry with integrity. These values are no more than good ideas without people who have the passion, commitment, and skills to apply them. At Davidson’s, we have that team. (davidsonsinc.com)

SB: Over the past two years, millions of firsttime gun buyers have exercised their Second Amendment rights. How does Davidson’s interact with this new group? WT: We have direct interaction via our Gallery of Guns website and blog. Gallery of Guns is a platform that lets consumers search our products and then purchase them directly from our dealers. Through the website we are able to provide information to consumers, including links to industry resources such as the National Shooting Sports Foundation. We also provide our dealers with product information and products in a timely manner that allows them to quickly and effectively meet the needs of those first-time gun buyers. In addition, we support our industry’s trade groups and other industry organizations, and through these organizations

Support Within the Industry

Redstone Firearms is a minority-owned business that thrives on education and instruction.

ollowing two record-setting years, the number of first-time gun buyers remains strong. African-Americans, HispanicAmericans, and other minorities have been driving much of this growth. The number of minority-owned gun stores and shooting ranges across the country also continues to increase.

Leading the way are thriving operations such as Redstone Firearms in Burbank, California. Since 2014, Jonathan and Geneva Solomon, the husband and wife co-owners of Redstone Firearms, have been blazing their own trail in the industry—finding success by putting education first.

Bonding Over Firearms The Solomons’ individual paths to founding Redstone Firearms could not have been more different. Jonathan Solomon was introduced to fire-

The Solomons soon decided to pursue their shared passion professionally by launching Redstone Firearms, a home-based FFL business in 2014. Geneva possessed a strong business management background; she majored in business law during college and then worked her way up the corporate ladder. With Jonathan’s law enforcement and firearms training experience, the couple was uniquely positioned to succeed. After securing an FFL, the Solomons began selling firearms from their home and offering training sessions by appointment. Business quickly grew, and Redstone Firearms became an official brick-and-mortar store in 2015. The pandemic shifted their training program into overdrive. Enrollment exploded for the Basic Firearms educational course that Geneva had developed, going from two to three students to nearly 80 students per class almost overnight. She converted the course into an online class, which has become incredibly popular in California. “Even when we had one person in class, Jonathan and I always operated as if there were 100 people. I think that was big during the pandemic and why we had people waiting five to eight hours,” Solomon says. “It didn’t matter that we had a line outside the door and a waiting list. We made sure you got the same amount of education and all your questions were answered. Everyone deserves the education.”

arms at an early age and participated in shooting sports as a youth. He later built a career in law enforcement, where he became a “go to” advisor for officers who wanted to improve their shooting skills. Geneva Solomon, on the other hand, did not grow up around firearms. Her introduction came in February 2009 when she visited a gun store for the first time and purchased a .40 S&W Beretta Px4 Storm for self-defense. She sought training from local instructors and fell in love with shooting. When Jonathan and Geneva met, they immediately bonded over firearms. On their first date, Jonathan asked Geneva if she was afraid of guns. She jokingly replied that she was carrying a gun on their date in case he proved to be “crazy.” “We were both divorced, full-time single parents of daughters, and we believed in the Second Amendment,” Geneva recalls. The couple hit it off and later married in a gun-themed wedding.

As Black gun store owners, the Solomons have faced a variety of unique challenges. Early on, they

couldn’t find other Black store owners that they could turn to for advice and guidance. However, they received support from Phillip Smith, founder and president of the National African American Gun Association (NAAGA). “He immediately sent people to meet us, and NAAGA has been one of our biggest supporters since before anyone knew who Redstone Firearms was,” Geneva says. “Once the pandemic hit, then the rest of the industry started to notice us in California because we were offering something other gun stores weren’t. Selling the firearm was secondary and education was first. That is when the name really started to grow.” At the same time, the pair faced some unfortunate incidents that challenged their commitment to their store. “We didn’t really have anyone to ‘look up to’ or mentor us,” Geneva says. “We had several bank accounts closed because we weren’t well versed on who would deal with a firearms company and who wouldn’t. We have sent in white faces [realtors] to negotiate leases because we were unsuccessful when trying to do it ourselves, only to be harassed by landlords once we moved in. We’ve had threatening calls,

texts, emails, and even things written onto the window of the store. We had bad Yelp reviews because ‘too many Black men’ were inside the store, and we had to fight to get those taken down. And when certain distributors found out we were Black-owned, they suddenly stopped fulfilling orders.”

Words of Wisdom for Dealers Geneva’s father always advised her to build a career around something she loved. When the Solomons

faced adversity while establishing Redstone Firearms, they always forged ahead because they both enjoy what they do. “If you’re only in this for money, you won’t succeed. You have to have a love and passion for firearms, education, the Second Amendment, and sports shooting,” Geneva says. “The love of what you do will get you through the very dry and down periods. Lastly, just stay humble and keep going.” (redstonefirearms.com)

GUNS AND GEAR

CCW is a fast-growing segment that retailers should fully embrace

G

commerce has been for defensive purposes. To increase appeal and usability for an increasingly diverse and knowledgeable customer base, gun and gear makers have stepped up to the plate in recent years to modernize concealed-carry wares. The concealment-oriented consumer expects comfort and functionality, with appearance running a close second. Here are some of the latest offerings in the growing CCW segment.

GUNS

It’s no longer news that robust-capacity subcompacts are where it’s at for mass appeal. With nearly all guns in that category being chambered in 9mm, there’s room for others, but maybe literally not room in micro-magazines to please the segment of the guncarrying populace who prefer larger calibers. Enter the 10mm cartridge, until now a bit player on the concealed-carry scene. 10mm Line Extensions Are Hot Items Smith & Wesson is one company to take a chance on introducing a pistol chambered in 10mm, highly touted for its defensive capability—if not gentle recoil. Adapting their existing .45 ACP M&P 2.0 pistol to 10mm was an easy transition. A bigger step

concealment partner, the Springfield Ronin EMP (Enhanced Micro Pistol) 1911 is bound to be a crowdpleaser. A shorter-grip radius makes the 1911 experience more accessible for more hands. With its light aluminum frame, slim profile, three-inch bull barrel, and nine-round magazine, the Ronin EMP 3-inch is made to conceal. But it’s also easy on the eyes with its two-tone blued/satin Cerakote-on-aluminum

etting back to business in the time of a pandemic has been a stop-and-go process for many, yet it’s yielded headlines about record gun sales. Much of that

was taken in moving the flat-face trigger, so popular in the S&W Shield series, into the new 10mm. Every one of the new 10mm 2.0 guns is optic-ready. Thumb safety is optional. SRP: $654. (smith-wesson.com) Although Springfield Armory discontinued its fullsize 10mm XD-M, late 2021 saw the dawn of the 10mm within the company’s XD-M Elite 3.8-inch compact, optics-ready (OSP) line. Two 11-round magazines are included. It weighs 27 ounces and is 6.75 inches long. Fans of the 10mm cartridge have waited a long time for a modern subcompact, and Springfield delivered. Long-Gun Maker Takes New Stance Savage Arms, an enduring name in rifles and shotguns that broke away from the Vista Outdoor umbrella in 2019, unveiled something completely different for the company. The Stance is a new subcompact, striker-fired 9mm handgun.

Distinguishing it from this very large category is a ported slide that comes standard. Modular backstraps are included. Two mags (7- and 10-round) are included. Right out of the gate, the Stance is offered in three color choices: black, olive drab, and flat dark earth. Other options include a manual safety and night sights. No word yet on an optic-ready version. SRP: $470-$561, depending on sight/laser options. (savagearms.com) Small Stuff That little gun company from Texas, Bond Arms, took the remarkable step of scaling down their popular derringer design to create an even lighter, easierto-tote tiny shooter. From across the room, this little gun bears a strong resemblance to Bond’s Backup model. However, the profile resembles the “after” photo on a diet commercial in comparison to others in the Bond lineup.

Slim and slab-sided, the two-shot Stinger is suitable for deep concealment. The Stinger is currently shipping to distributors in a snappy 9mm. Shipments of .380 ACP are possible by fourth quarter, perhaps as late as 2023. A .22 LR is in the long-term plan. SRP: starts at $379. (bondarms.com)

Compact Carry The STR-9SC (the “C” stands for compact) is a line extension of the polymer-lower 9mm STR-9 by Stoeger. The 10+1 capacity all-black with a nitridetreated slide gun sports a three-dot sight system. A tritium upgrade is offered. The barrel is 3.54 inches and overall length is 6.54 inches. Two primary models will be available, one with a standard slide, with or without tritium. The other model has a pre-milled

slide that ships with four mounting plates to accommodate the user’s choice of reflex sight. SRP: $329, standard sights; $399, tritium sights; $399, optic-ready. (stoegerindustries.com) A Reinterpretation of Single-Action Concealability S&W’s latest diminutive gun is the hammer-fired CSX, a micro 9mm with a 3.1-inch barrel. The external, single-action hammer and metal frame may be reminiscent of 1911 design, but the CSX is unique. It has ambidextrous slide stops, interchangeable backstraps, a flat-face trigger with safety tab, and ambi-

dextrous thumb safeties. The latter are attached not to the frame, but to the beavertail of the grip. The mag release is reversible. The CSX’s steel, three-dot sight set is removable; the front sight is windageadjustable. Each CSX comes with a 12- and 10-round magazine. It’s currently available only in black Armornite finish on the aluminum alloy frame and stainless-steel barrel/slide. The CSX weighs 21.9 ounces with an empty mag. Overall, it’s 4.6 inches tall and 6.1 inches long. SRP: $609. (smith-wesson.com)

Smooth Operator Serenity is the name of a new model from luxury 1911 manufacturer Cabot Guns of Pennsylvania. The satin-finish all-stainless frame, Damascus slidetopped, silvery pistol is available in commander and

government size. Although it is an exclusive pistol, it’s made to shoot. An extended magazine well, flared and lowered ejection port, and polished feed ramp all contribute to reliable function. Although the model was announced in January, lead time for this madeto-order gun is 8 to 12 months. Options include a left-hand safety, MRDS-ready slide, and chambering in 9mm or .45 ACP. Capacity is 9+1 or 8+1, respectively. SRP: $8,495. (cabotguns.com) Defending Tradition The buying power of the traditionalist remains strong. This year, Taurus has richly served those with a hankering for wood and steel with a new release based on a classic design. Their new five-shot .357 Magnum/.38 Special revolver is called Defender 605. It’s compact but not tiny, suitable for bedside or concealment under a jacket. The Defender 605 is an update of the popular Taurus 605 double/single action revolver. Its prominent features are a threeinch barrel, tritium front sight with an orange ring outline, and extended ejection rod.

Taurus gave customers four choices of finish and grip. At the base of $472.63 is a matte stainless or black-finished stainless Defender 605 with a rubber Hogue grip. Coming in at $517.33, the Defender has an Altamont wood grip and Tungsten Cerakote. At

also offering security and relatively quick access to the firearm.

A New Chambering The announcement by Federal Ammunition that 30 Super Carry was newly available opened the door for new guns and line extensions for the new chambering. Those wanting more power than .380 while retaining the capacity that a smaller caliber offers now have a new option. Smith & Wesson stepped up to the plate immediately by offering their Shield Plus OR model chambered for 30 Super Carry.

The Shield Plus OR provides the latest indemand features for pistols. It has an optics cut and flat-face trigger with clear reset. Capacity is healthy with the included 12- and 15-round magazines. Its thin profile and Armornite corrosion-resistant finish provide a package that’s ideally suited for consistent daily carry as well as range use. Available with or without a thumb safety. SRP: $595. HOLSTERS AND MORE

Community Innovation It’s uncommon that real innovation happens on the holster scene. But the folks at Phlster conceived of a no-belt-required concept for popular inside-waistband carry and ran with it. Now in its second generation, called the Express, the Phlster Enigma isn’t a bellyband, isn’t a belt, and isn’t just a Kydex holster. Instead, it employs components or concepts of all. This system of carry employs either a house-made or user-provided Kydex shell, a nylon belt and leg “leash,” plus a unique 3D-printed frame that attaches to the holster and holds it snug to the body. Worn IWB, the Enigma is the first carry method that consistently delivers on the promise of deep concealment, even under gym shorts and yoga pants while

20

Phlster’s invention is a testament to the power of community. There’s a “concealment workshop” Facebook group that was launched by Enigma’s creators. Though it’s not limited to discussion of that holster, the Enigma is the center of discussion in this curated, educational online community. Thanks to their own in-house research as well as careful attention to thousands of user-submitted photos and comments, Enigma creators Sarah and Jon Hauptman of Minnesota have established a rather impressive body of written knowledge about how IWB holsters tend to interact with nearly every body type and lifestyle. Their Facebook group features in-depth discussion about customizing the Enigma, and in some cases other IWB holsters, with various angles or accessories to ensure comfort and true concealment. The Enigma is priced just south of $200 for a shell/body belt combo; less if one supplies the holster component. Appearances indicate Phlster the company is scaling in accordance with growing demand. Production and delivery times are no longer slower than those of large corporate holster producers. Their down-toearth approach to marketing is a model that’s being embraced by a consumer base that could well be tiring of “influencer” or other de-personalized messages associated with consumer education and sales. (phlsterholsters.com) Delivering Hard-to-Find Fit Also on the holster front, Kinetic Concealment is solving the frequent problem of not being able to find a custom Kydex fit for many guns. The Tennessee company has concealment holsters for a wide range of handguns, most recently including the American Tactical FXS-9, a striker-fired 9mm imported from Turkey. The Kinetic Concealment Hybrid IWB holster features a patented, neoprene-backed leather-and-Kydex combination. They use Chicago Style flat head screws so that the cants can be easily adjusted and the Kydex shell can be tightened down

after continued use. These holsters fit most any gun belt 2 inches wide or less. The Concealment Hybrid IWB is priced at $65.95. The company also carries the KC Baby, an appendix IWB hybrid for $52.95. (kineticconcealment.com) Popular Options in One Package DeSantis Gunhide, based in New York, has been in the holster business for nearly 50 years. These days, they deal in numerous materials in addition to hides. The company’s newest concealment holster is called

Uni-Tuk. It’s an extension of the company’s customfitting Kydex line called Pegasus. It integrates numerous in-demand features, including a breathable, padded synthetic/fabric sweat shield against the body when worn inside the waistband. Its shirt-tuckable belt clip can be rotated for any angle of carry as well as adjusted for height. Its “Spur,” the DeSantis term for the increasingly popular “claw” extension on some other IWB models, helps to level the gun and enhance concealment for many body types. The UniTuk is made for any Glock 43, Sig Sauer P365, and Springfield Armory Hellcat guns. It is optics-friendly. Right- and left-hand fits are available. SRP: $89.99. (desantisholster.com)

Beyond Optics The folks at Warne Scope Mounts are also EDC people. So, it’s not much of a stretch, though the brand may be a surprise, to learn that there’s a new line of Warne EDC gear. Their flagship concealment holster is the Hybrid IWB, with a Kydex outer shell and

comfortable fabric sweat guard. Its Kydex is custommolded for a positive click-in. There are fits for numerous popular subcompacts/micros, including the S&W J-frame revolver. Right now, Warne Hybrid IWB holsters are available only through Optics Planet and Midway USA. SRP: $85. (warnescopemounts.com) Innovative EDC Today’s EDC aficionado is likely to carry more than just a gun and holster. Daily carry is more likely to bring to mind a personal rescue system comprised of gear and training. Many consider a fixed-blade knife a necessary component of the EDC package.

A new producer, STA Blades, has made a quiet but impressive entrance out of a homebased forge in Texas. Once a rep for H&K’s and Leupold’s military sales, former Marine Scout sniper Jerod Johnson, STA Blades’ founder and bladesmith, is no stranger to the gun industry. His latest inventions, STA Blades, include the hand-crafted Stabby, appropriate for EDC. It has 80CRV2 steel blades and hand-tooled, individually colored G10 handles that can be made to order. Johnson pairs each blade with another inhouse creation—a matching, felt-lined Kydex sheath. The only outsourced aspect of production is the STA logo on each blade. Each STA blade is paired with a credit card-size aluminum certificate of authenticity, required to utilize the lifetime warranty. Facebook is the primary promotional outlet for this prolific, one-man startup. A one-of-a-kind STA knife starts around $150. (facebook.com/stablades) Bagging a Winner Events of the last two years haven’t slowed American Tactical, Inc. (formerly American Tactical Imports) down. Not only has the company ramped up its own, U.S.-based firearm production, they also launched their own ammo brand and took on the role as the U.S. distributor of Rukx Gear, a line of gun-oriented packs.

The nylon webbing shoulder strap is adjustable. A heavy-duty, rustproof zipper secures the main compartment. The Discrete Business Bag/ American Tactical Business Bag is offered in tan, gray, and black. SRP: $69.95. (americantactical.us)

THE RAPIDLY EXPANDING CUSTOMER BASE According to the annual concealedcarry data roundup published in October 2021 by Crime Prevention Research Center, concealed-carry licensure in the United States saw a 48-percent increase between 2016 and 2021. True participation in carry by civilians is surely much greater because, as the same report explains, permit-less carry states are also on the increase, and data from those 21 states is not, or is no longer, included in their reports. Several other sources cite record

The latest release from the Rukx brand is the American Tactical Business Bag, a messengerstyle bag suited for urban use on the outside. Inside, it’s ready for tactical business with a universal nylon holster to fit most full-size and compact handguns in the hidden gun compartment. The bag has a padded laptop sleeve that holds up to a 16-inch display. There’s a bevy of external and internal organization-enhancing pockets and slots, and an ID/business card display sleeve on the back. Hidden just under the flap is plenty of small-item storage plus enough loop material to discreetly carry a good supply of morale patches.

GEAR NEW ERA FOR A

Law-enforcement and military personnel are often put in harm’s way. Here’s a look at gear that can help protect them and allow them to work more efficiently.

by Michael D. Faw

oday’s law enforcement officers and military personnel everywhere face many threats from many directions. Unrest and riots in major cities and struggling countries often mean bullets in the air, plus rocks, bricks, and bottles among the incoming objects. The 2022

FIREARMS AND AMMUNITION

SHOT Show indicated manufacturers have taken note of the threats to military and LE personnel and are offering more bulletproof vests and armor modifications, protective helmet upgrades, along with other gear to protect and better equip those who serve us. There were also firearms, ammunition, optics, and more gear of all types for those who like to stay informed about the cutting-edge technology that helps you stay safe.

ARMOR UP

The best defense against some threats is shielding up. Premier Body Armor is bringing several levels of bulletproof protective vests to the market, starting with the company’s Stratis Level IV enhanced plate that weighs slightly more than four pounds

The company’s Everyday Armor Shirt also should also be considered and is much like a T-shirt with a Level IIIA insert that is contained within inner pockets and then supported by several concealed straps. Another unique product is the company’s

The trend in firearms and ammunition continues to be filling in the gaps of what is already available. Barrett celebrates 40 years in business in 2022 and continues to produce what is best classified as true powerhouse rifles. Nearly a dozen rifles are available in calibers ranging from .50 BMG to .416 Barrett down to the iconic 5.56 NATO cartridge. While the company is well known for its MRAD bolt-action large-bore rifle, the new M107A1 is a recoil-operated, semi-auto rifle equipped with a suppressor, long accessory rail on top, an adjustable bipod on the front, and a monopod (for shoulder stability) on the rear of the rifle. This rifle is available in black, tungsten gray, and FDE. While it weighs in at around 27 pounds, the rifle has a 10-round magazine to hold the

Federal has a long working relationship with LE and military units and wins many government contracts to supply various calibers and types of ammunition. Stalwarts in the company’s line include tactical buckshot and tactical bonded bullets. The popular Gold Dot ammunition is being released in G2 Next Generation ammunition with 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 Auto+P bullets that have

tioned to create a backstop on most standard shooting ranges. After the live demo I witnessed, it was difficult to tell the new block had ever been shot, though the paper target in the demonstration showed all 20 rounds hit in a diameter not much larger than a baseball. (rubox.com) Training is also becoming more realistic and challenging. InVeris is offering the XWT, a 360-degree target carrier that offers trainees challenges much like those on the street — coming from all directions. The company has also upgraded a robotic target carrier and is releasing the GranTrap, an environmental backstop designed to reduce lead dust on a range. (inveristraining.com)

an elastomer-filled bullet nose and reach velocities around 1,000 fps. The Anoka, Minnesota, based manufacturer is also releasing its new 30 Super Carry ammunition that falls between 9mm and .380 Auto. The HST bullet drives deeper and delivers improved expansion. In addition, the cartridges permit more magazine capacity than the standard 9mm rounds. Another new release is the Force X2 Shorty 12-gauge shotshell packing buckshot. (federalpremium.com)

NON-LETHAL OPTIONS

Those who have been through shoot-house programs know the problem is always re-arranging rooms to create new and challenging threat scenarios. That problem has been solved. One new system by Rubox is a series of interlocking panels, or ballistic-containing rubber blocks, that are filled with a loose mineral mixture. The blocks can be used to create a room — or space permitting — a shoot house, and then shot up to 3,000 times. The blocks are tested to stop rounds ranging from 9mm to .338 Lapua and can be opened so the trapped rounds can be recovered. The Rubox blocks can also be posi-

SimRange by Laser Shot has expanded its computer-driven shooting sports and training simulators. A basic ready-to-engage package retails for around $6,200 and offers the choice of eight firearms, including pistols, and the software library offers more than 50 scenarios. Nearly a dozen are military-situation practical drills. (simrange.com)

Today’s LE and military persons need options other than deadly force when facing threats. Canada-based PARA OPS has introduced the next generation of non-lethal systems — a reloadable LED flashlight shooting a Low Energy Cartridge that is not propelled by compressed air or gunpowder. Instead, the .67-caliber cartridges are propelled by a proprietary compound and will range up to 60 feet. Cartridge options include pepper powder for dispersing, inert colored powder for marking, and a blunt impact cartridge for stunning impact. Those projectiles can also be launched from several specially designed devices that look much like the standard TV remote control.

NEW GEAR FOR A NEW ERA

NIGHT VISION UNLOCKS THE DARK

Thugs and threats know darkness can help them with their plans. LE and military units are using night-vision gear more to find those threats. SIONYX, a digital night-vision manufacturer, has released several models of night-vision optics targeted for the tactical and LE categories. The new OPSIN DNV-M1 is an ultra-low-light color monocular. This small, lightweight night-vision monocular produces views beyond the standard neon green night-vision hues. I tested a unit and could see items in various colors in a very darkened room. (sionyx.com)

use by law enforcement and first responders to provide emergency scene lighting, illuminating traffic stops, or for other in-the-field needs. A unique feature of the BearTrap includes the ability to shift the light 270 degrees in its frame — light where you need it. The compact light weighs approximately two pounds, readily clamps to most surfaces, or can be set as a stand-alone. In addition, users can utilize a magnetic base or a hanging hook for added-use options. (streamlight.com)

CRIME SCENE COLLECTION UPGRADED NOCTIS Technologies offers military and LE units state-of-the art night-vision systems and components, including binocular and monocular NV devices plus thermal units. The new PVS-7 night-vision goggle is lightweight, easy to install on a helmet, and is comfortable to view through. (noctistech.com)

When a crime occurs, often the process of finding the pieces is the biggest challenge. Minelab now offers the Equinox Series of metal detectors that feature simultaneous Multi Frequency (or Multi-IQ Technology) that provides four distinct detection modes. You can also set the detector to a wireless audio mode so it communicates with your cellphone.

The unit is fully waterproof to up to 10 feet and has an easy-to-read user-friendly interface. The company also offers headphones and a ProFind pin pointer for specific item targeting, such as out-of-sight shell casings. The ProSwing 45 harness would also be a great addition to the Equinox Metal Detector and helps with long-term carrying. (minelab.com)

MOTORCYCLE LE HYDRATION COMFORT

While sirens and flashing lights are now offered as standard gear on all LE motorcycles, one new addition to consider is an onboard hydration system. Stored in what looks like a standard hard-side box, the FluidLogic Tactical Hydration System has a long hose that extends from the water tank and pump to the rider’s helmet. The special Aquacom permits drinking without removing a helmet and can be controlled with an app installed on any cellphone. This is an adaption from the same hydration systems used by many race car drivers. (rainmaker.com)

LIGHTING THE NIGHT

Streamlight has released the BearTrap, a multi-function work light that projects a powerful 2,000-lumens light beam. There are six output modes, including floodlight and spotlight. It can operate up to 12 hours in the low setting, has a battery-indicator gauge, and is rechargeable. This stand-up light is designed for

CROWNING

Achievement When SIG Sauer challenged the paradigm of what a 9mm micro-compact could be, the result was the P365. by Wayne van Zwoll

P

istols come in size classes as vaguely defined as those for automobiles. “Full-size” grips fit my pork-chop paws, and a generous sight radius helps me hit. Thus, I’ve paid little attention to handguns that hide behind belts and under pant cuffs. I’ve mustered some love for “carry” models with full-size grips and

4-inch barrels. In traditional OWB (outside waist-band) holsters, these make sitting easier. “You should fire a P365,” said Phil Strader, SIG Sauer’s pistol product manager. “It’s for people who dismiss micro-compact and even compact handguns as hard to shoot accurately—or who assume their magazines hold too few rounds.”

CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT

Strader quickly divined I’d had as much truck with “micro” and “compact” as with Italian opera. He broke the awkward silence. “By SIG standards, compact pistols have barrels no longer than 4 inches and down-sized grips on a frame that measures about 7x5 inches. Micro-compacts have barrels shorter than 3¾ inches and a frame that would fit in a 6x4½-inch box.” The P365, he added, is a micro-compact 9mm. “Tiny,” I observed. “It has a 12-shot magazine.” “What?” Late in 2015 Strader’s shop tackled what must have seemed a daunting task. “At that time,” he told me, “there were no pistols in the 9mm market that offered the concealment of a micro-compact no more than an inch wide and the magazine capacity of full-size handguns. In fact, most micros held only six or seven rounds. Also, they were hard to fire accurately, especially for shooters with big hands.” Over the next 18 months, Strader explained, “SIG engineers, industrial designers, project managers, and marketing teams challenged the paradigm of the striker-fired 9mm CCW pistol. They came up with a semi-auto that tucks as easily as any micro-compact, but carries 10, 12, even 15 shots. The competition has pushed to match that

capacity, but the P365 handily beats all others as regards comfort in hand. We made sure this was a shootable pistol, with a grip and balance suited to hands of all sizes.” So, last year I ordered one. In February. “Should have it by May,” cooed SIG’s customer service crew. In June they apologized: “It’s a popular pistol.” In July: “We’re making as many as we can.” Come August: “Just a few more weeks.” Okay, all pistols were setting sales records. And scrounging 9mm ammo kept me occupied. August had almost expired when the P365 XL arrived in a polymer hard case. Frame and slide are nitron-finished (black) stainless steel. Though it has night sights, the pistol was fitted, at my request, with SIG’s own RomeoZero red-dot sight. This cataloged option seems to me a great bargain. “When we developed the P365,” said Strader, “the P320 was the only pistol we offered with a SIG red-dot sight installed. It sold well. Red-dot sights are fast on target, and they’re a hit with shooters whose aging eyes have lost the flexibility to bring iron sights into sharp focus. We’re now installing SIG Romeo red-dot sights on 320X5 and X-series models, also on the P226 and P229.” Given the myriad plates, adapters, and screws needed to mate some optics with some handguns, a SIG pistol with a range-ready SIG red-dot sight can spare you much time and expense. “We’re

now selling about as many red-dot P365s as the naked version,” he added. The RomeoZero has a 1.6x.93-inch footprint, is just .93 high, and weighs less than half an ounce. Its HD polymer lens boasts 10 times the impact resistance of glass. Available with a 3-minute or 6-minute dot, the RomeoZero has eight illumination levels. Sight pictures are parallax-free; eye relief is unlimited. SIG guarantees the battery for 10 years, as the sight is motion-activated and powers down if it doesn’t sense movement. Of course, it adjusts for windage (120-minute range) and elevation (90-minute range). Gripping the P365, I found that Strader and his team had indeed put “big-pistol” feel in a concealed-carry package. The polymer grip isn’t “hand-filling” like that on a DA magnum revolver or even a 1911. But in some inscrutable way, it touches all the right places without unduly pressuring any. No awkward rotation or tipping action that forces a squeeze. This pistol encourages a relaxed hold. It also has a nose for the target. Depressing the base button that switches on the sight, I saw the dot right away. The shape, texture, and dimensions of the grip are impossible to describe; you have to feel them. Here, methinks, is the crowning achievement of the P365 designers. It is a superlative grip. “That module was a challenge,” Strader admitted, “as it had to be comfortable and controllable, but very slim. Developing a new platform is always difficult; making it modular, per our P320, was a tall order.” SIG supplies two double-stack magazines with each P365. The XL RomeoZero with a 3.7-inch

barrel has a 12-round mag, in a slightly longer grip than on the 10-shot SAS and Nitron versions with 3.1-inch barrels. The P365 XL holds half again as many rounds as a 1911—make that twice as many with the optional 15-shot magazine. Although the 9mm lacks the moxie of the .45 ACP, 9mm pistols are easier to control in recoil than are .45s. Also, modern full-throttle 9mm loads are much more effective than those that defined the cartridge a century ago. Another distinguishing feature of the P365 XL (but not all P365s) is the straight, smooth trigger.

Before the pistol arrived, I’d asked Strader about that trigger. “You might like it,” he’d said simply. “I do.” A few shots made me a convert. Unlike a rifle’s trigger, with its short take-up, the trigger on a strikerfired pistol must move. For me, a generous flat surface enhances control. I find the P365 XL’s trigger less apt to pinch my finger than one with a curved face. The STR (Short Tactical Reset) trigger mechanism of the P365 doesn’t require as much force or movement as a DA trigger after engagement. It gives me more consistent hits than does a DA/SA trigger because each pull feels the same. The trigger on the P365 I’m using breaks at 5.2 pounds. P365 XL and Nitron pistols are available with a manual safety. I don’t want this feature on a strikerfired pistol, so didn’t request it. Serrated front and rear, the slide is easy to cycle. The slide locks open after the magazine is empty, and the slide release won’t close the breech on an empty magazine. On the range, I tacked a target at 25 yards. That’s farther than micro-compacts are designed to sling bullets, and groups aren’t as tight as at 15 steps, where many little pistols get checked. But a longer poke would best show the P365’s “shootability” compared to that of full-size handguns. From a sandbag, five-shot series with SIG’s 365 V-Crown ammo punched groups averaging just over 3 inches across. My best measured 2½ inches. I fare a tad better with bigger pistols, but they don’t ride my hip like a 21-ounce micro-compact. “We tried to make the P365 a carry pistol that would please even gimlet-eyed enthusiasts,” said Strader. “No apologies. No compromises.” Did his team succeed? SIG has been deluged with orders. And this P365 may have a new home. SRP: $650. (sigsauer.com)

hen you walk through the front doors of the Bristlecone Shooting, Training & Retail Center in the western suburbs of Denver, you find a bright, open retail area with quality inventory and friendly, knowledgeable staff. The 14 indoor shooting lanes are always busy, and the many different classes fill quickly.

It’s a welcoming atmosphere, which was the key to what owners Bryan and Jacquelyn Clark were hoping to create. “We didn’t grow up around guns,” Jacquelyn says. “We got into shooting when we lived in Atlanta and had a personal crisis. We thought we heard someone in our house and found ourselves hiding behind the bed with a golf club. The next day Bryan began researching firearms and dragged me to the range.” They both fell in love with shooting, but the first range they went to wasn’t exactly nice. After looking around, they found a more welcoming environment and began to progress as shooters. Both Clarks have extensive business and legal experience, so when they moved to Colorado and couldn’t find a range with a similar feel, they decided to start one themselves. “It was a dinner table conversation,” she remembers. “We wanted to create something different that was unique to the market.” They made it their mission to provide an extraordinary recreational experience for shooting sports enthusiasts of all levels. Working with range development consultant Ed Santos, and attending an NRA Range Development conference, they began to piece together their vision. The NSSF Five-Star range is 20,000 square feet, and at first the Clarks worried it would be too much space. But they soon found that rather than feeling empty, the retail space and range feel open and less cramped. “The most important thing to us was to have an environment that was welcoming to everyone, something that was inclusive and inviting,” says Jacquelyn. “We wanted a family focus for people to walk in and feel it was comfortable and not intimidating—particularly for new shooters.” The exterior of the store resembles a mountain timber and stone-framed lodge, providing an immediate visual connection to the Colorado outdoor aesthetic. Everything from the layout of the store to where the range is located to the colors on the walls were considered. In addition, staffing was critical as

both Clarks had experience in customer service and knew that the people working in the store would set the business apart. Bristlecone opened to the public in January 2015, and they haven’t looked back since.

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

Jacquelyn says they knew they wanted to offer a wide array of training opportunities when they started the business, but decided to open with basic concealed carry and introductory classes using the NRA curriculum. After a year of experience, they branched out into a different curriculum and expanded their group of instructors. With several different training modules, they recognized they needed a more cohesive strategy and decided to develop their own. The Bristlecone Instructor Certification and Development program is led by Cindy Coker, a professional USPSA and 3 Gun shooter with a passion for introducing people to firearms and providing proper fundamentals and firearms safety. The in-house program allows for a more standardized curriculum in the classroom, and the range’s instructors have the personal skills that enable them to teach to different levels of firearms experience. “This process has allowed us to connect and engage with new shooters and bring them through a progression of more challenging offerings,” Jacquelyn says. “Our instruction has increased 300 percent since COVID hit, and we have been able to matriculate a lot of new shooters into other classes.”

Training is a large part of Bristlecone's mission, and the range provides both classroom instruction and practice in its stateof-the art indoor range.

As a result, Bristlecone has expanded the number of classes and instructors with a wide variety of basic instruction, concealed carry, tactical and law enforcement, scenario-based training, and all types of competitive shooting. Competitions are a big part of their culture as they show a pathway for a variety of recreational shooting opportunities. Bristlecone hosts USPSA-sanctioned matches twice a month. The Clarks are excited to see how the training department continues to grow. “Every time I think we can’t come up with another class, we dream up something new—the possibilities seem endless.”

The facility now has three classrooms, a shoot house for scenario-based tactical training using Simunition firearms, and a Ti Outdoor Training Simulator. In addition, they are partnering with area ranges for training they can’t provide in house. Colorado Clays is used for advanced shotgun skills, and Pawnee Sportsmen’s Center, which has a range out to 1,000 yards, is used for advanced long-range shooting instruction.

SPECIALTY CLASSES

The staff at Bristlecone also emphasizes youth and women-only classes. The youth shooting league “camps” offer a series of sessions that culminate in a fun competition. Offerings include a USPSA camp that, in addition to finetuning firearms handling, teaches about competition etiquette as well as how to use a holster and how to shoot stages. At the end of the camp, students get their competition card. Jacquelyn acknowledges that women are an incredibly important market segment, but also offer unique challenges. The range hosts a Ladies Night every Tuesday where women shoot for free, and there are women-only classes as well as options for private lessons taught by either female or male instructors. Because women often like to try different firearms before purchasing, Bristlecone also hosts a special event where shooters can try up to 30 different pistols from the rental fleet to decide which they like the best. It then offers discounts for purchases. Although the event isn’t marketed only to women, that’s the main client base that attends.

There is also a member’s lounge with lockers and a conference room that can also function as a fourth classroom. Because of the size of the facility, there is a lot of flexibility in use of space. In addition to sales, the operation has two fullservice gunsmiths as well as an apprentice with expertise from tactical and law enforcement to shotguns and hunting rifles. Their team can help to customize any firearm, offering custom textures and finishes, stippling, and Cerakote as well as trigger work and installation of sights. Jacquelyn notes that Bristlecone’s ability to offer a full range of retail and service departments makes it a unique facility in the Denver metro area.

NEXT STEPS

Bristlecone was recently named the Best Indoor Shooting Range in the 2021 Best of Denver awards from Westword, an avant-garde publication that touts itself as Denver’s independent source of local news and culture. As such, it is targeted to young adults and reaches a very different demographic than the typical firearms publication. In their writeup for the award, Westword states: “Bristlecone offers an encouraging environment for people who want to learn more about firearms but aren’t draped in a ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ flag (though those people would probably be welcomed, too). It’s also known as one of the most LGBTQ-friendly ranges

in town. Bristlecone has instructors who are well trained, sensible and friendly, teaching classes in selfdefense as well as shotgun, rifle and pistol training, with special attention to the importance of addressing mental health issues and gun safety.” Clearly the Clarks found a market that was primed for the business they envisioned, and they are excited about the new opportunities. Now in their seventh year of business, they are moving out of the start-up phase and are driving their business forward by evaluating what they want to do next.

“We’ve made mistakes—you can’t be afraid to make mistakes—but I never would have imagined this path from our stuffy corporate jobs,” Jacquelyn says. “We love what we do as well as the industry we work with and the people that we brought in. We started by trying to build the kind of facility that we wanted to shoot in, and clearly that vision is resonating with the people of Denver. We can’t wait to see where this goes.” (bristlecone.com)

space with an average of 30 employees and over 2,000 firearms in stock. Founded in 1962, it is now in its second generation of family ownership. MSRs are attracting a renewed interest at this large retailer. “World events and high fuel prices are definitely ticking up sales in the MSR category,” said buyer-manager Jim Jaeger. The S&W M&P 15 Sport IIs and models from Sig Sauer sell best. Handguns continue to have steady sales. The Smith M&P Shield Plus and EZ hold the lead. Springfield Hellcats also are in high demand and hold down the third spot. Glocks are also turning well. This retailer reports that though ammo stocks are improving, some hunting calibers are still in short supply.

World events and changing local demographics are driving this store’s sales. “We’ve seen a lot of change in the last year. With spiking fuel prices, and the agricultural business in a state of high operational costs, my sales simply are not keeping up. If that wan’t bad enough, what has really been the biggest difficulty is product deliveries. Since we haven’t gotten our allotments, our sales have slowed,” said owner Roy Ballard. Sales of MSRs have remained flat since Christmas. DPMS Oracles and Ruger 556s are the top sellers. Ruger 10/22s are expected to be in stock this summer. A few clay-target guns are turning, with Browning Citori over-unders and a few Maxus semiautos getting attention. On the shotgun rack, pump-actions from Turkey are the primary inventory. Ruger EC9 and Taurus G3 handguns are still turning at a nice pace. Meanwhile, used guns are making up most of the handgun inventory.

Resting halfway between Fresno and Los Angeles, this San Fernando Valley independent homedefense and hunting store is a staple in the Bakersfield area. Glock 19s have been in high demand, but Sig Sauer P320s and P938s and 9mm Smith & Wesson M&P Shields have also been on the move. “All and all, it has been a good year—even with the ammo paperwork and other state requirements. At least we have good accessibility to California-compliant product,” said owner Cynthia Thome. Ruger PC Carbines are at the top of the list in the Modern Sporting Rifle category. Bolt-action rifles, particularly Tikkas and Ruger Americans, have had a strong season. Calibers like .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor have dominated the bolt category. Handgun ammo is finally back on the floor in volume, along with .223 and .556. California-compliant .30-caliber ammo is still in short supply.

Nebraska Gun, Lincoln This

small independent metro store keeps an average of 200 firearms in stock with three employees working the counter. Ammo stocks are low and a challenge to find. “We are just getting what we can without pre-orders. This is a small shop. I can’t see tying up high amounts of cash in ammo when space is tight and deliveries are so unpredictable. Birdshot in No. 5 and No. 6 is just impossible, though I can now get truckloads of 00 buck,” said owner Jeff Macintyre. MSRs, including combination uppers and lowers from Palmetto Armory and Bear Creek, are moving at two a month. Due to the availability of price-point revolvers, sales of handguns, including the rimfire Taurus TX22, are up from last year. Sales of semi-autos, including Glock 19s and SCCY, are also strong.

With a standing inventory of 500 guns, this central Washington retailer stocks a variety of general sporting goods, including large 3-D targets. Although hunting ammo has been difficult to secure, this store is making inroads. “We really make an effort to find difficult-to-get rifle ammo. We want to be that place where you know you can find a box of .30-30 or .300 Savage cartridges,” said counter salesman Jarrod Leigh. Browning X-Bolts in 6.5 Creedmoor are just starting to move and are expected to be the top seller. Ruger Americans are sitting in the second slot and are expected to remain in that position throughout the summer months. MSR sales are slowing but still turning one every two weeks. S&W M&P 15 Sport IIs and Windhams lead the sales board. Pistols are strong. Smith M&P Shields hold the top spot, but Springfield XDMs in 9mm and .40 are coming on fast. The Taurus TX22 Competition is also selling well.

Located on Highway 24 in north-central Kansas, this large independent has seen a local downturn in availability. Typically, it stocks 2,500 firearms. But right now, it has no more than 400 in stock.

Founded in 1961, this metro Anchorage retailer is a specialty fly shop and hunting store. It keeps an average of 180 firearms in stock, with one full-time and two part-time employees working the firearms counter. Located on the south side of Anchorage, it spans 4,000 square feet. Handgun sales continue to post strong numbers. Sig P365s, Glock 46Xs, and Springfield Hellcats attract the most attention. The Ruger Alaskan in .460 is a high-demand SKU, and the .454 Casull is on backorder. Inventory on shotguns is almost exclusively personal-defense guns sold to backcountry guides and boaters. Ammo is available, but pricing has not come down in over a year for most calibers. The exception is 9mm. “Fuel and other economic world trends are putting the sting back in our ammo supplies and cost. While we can get most of the unusual calibers, they have gone back up in price,” said store manager John Staser.

Managed by the owner with one part-time employee, this small-town shop keeps 150 firearms in stock. This retailer opened its doors in 2020. Sig Sauer has a strong foothold in this shop, turning daily numbers of P320s and P365s. Other fast movers include Taurus G3cs and Ruger EC9s. At this location, 9mm is the most consistentselling caliber. “Our store sees a high-budget walk-in customer compared to our small online business. We continue to foster strong relationships with new customers. Whereas, online sales are more price-point driven,” said owner Jeff Pickard. MSRs continue to get attention this spring. A few M&P 15 Sport IIs with optic-ready accessories and Sig M400s are on the move. For turkey season, Henry HO15T single-shot shotguns and Mossberg 500s are heading out the door. Ammo stocks are good at this location, with more on the way.

Gun Doctor, Monk Corner

Keeping 250-plus hunting guns and handguns in stock, this retailer maintains high traffic by retaining a full-time gunsmith on hand. The gunsmith also services guns from other local gun shops. Turkey season is in full swing, and semiauto shotguns and Turkish pumps are what’s selling. Used Browning A5s and Remington 1100s in 12 gauge are the top sellers. Pumps that retail for under $400 are also moving. “You stock a used 1100 or A5, and it’s usually gone the next day. Our used gun business has been increasing over the last two years,” said owner Christy Elan. Spring is also rimfire season. Any kind of lever action is in high demand, most notably Henrys and Marlins. Although this store stocks new guns, it continues to lean on used firearms for its primary profit center. Handgun sales are steady. Glock 19s, Springfield XDMs, and Sig P365s top the list at the handgun counter.

This classic New England gun shop has a clay-target range and stocks a variety of hunting, self-defense, and long guns in their store. As the weather becomes more favorable, clay-target guns are starting to turn consistently. Price-point sales (below $1,000) from Weatherby and Mossberg are on the rise. “While pricing is somewhat stable on shotgun shells, it’s getting hard to keep field-grade 7½s and 8s in stock. We do have some resources to secure more inventory, but it’s getting more difficult, and shipping costs are increasing,” said owner Bill Rodeschin. The handgun counter continues to see steady turns of Ruger EC9s and Taurus G2s and G3s. Sales of MSRs have slowed to one a month, and Rodeschin notes that in this area his customers are increasingly more price sensitive. Ruger 10/22s are starting to move for summer plinking. This store reports a good stock of .22 ammo.

Pawn Gallery, Clarksville

This small, independent pawnshop, which stocks an average of 250 firearms, is located off Interstate 40 just a few miles east of Fort Smith. “We’re a small shop, and we cater to a price-point shopper. With plenty of used handguns being traded in, our strength is in low-end sales. High gas prices and unsure farm expenses are driving a slower sales month,” said manager Kelly Elam. Sales of MSRs are flat, with one to three S&W M&P Sport IIs or Rugers selling every three weeks. Used shotguns are in very high demand. Some price-point 12 gauges from Turkey are crossing the counter. “We’re looking forward to turkey season to move some of the inventory of shotguns that arrived last year. Our older customers are showing higher interest in 20-gauge pumps for the lighter weight,” said Elam. Handgun inventories are high.

Located just south of the Massachusetts line, this small-town New England retailer specializes in ammo, handloading, and handguns. Reloading supplies continue to challenge this retailer. “Powder and primers are still brutal to get. We really thought that this problem would have been resolved by now. My customers are clamoring for a more consistent supply chain,” said owner Paul Conley. Turns on MSRs are about one every two weeks for this retailer. Sales lean to Smith M&P 15 Sport IIs and Ruger 556s. The only higher-end rifle moving at this store is Daniel Defense. Shotgun sales are ticking upward. Both the Mossberg 500 and the Stoeger Condor over/under are on the move. Handgun sales are continuing to turn at near 2021 numbers. All things 9mm pull the best numbers. Glock 19s, Smith M&P Shields, and Sig P365s lead the pack.

City Firearms, KYRiver Louisville

This metro Louisville dealer stocks an average of 400 firearms and handguns with three employees. As the spring months move ahead, handgun sales continue to deliver strong numbers. The 9mm platform dominates this counter. Glock 19s, Ruger LC9s, and Taurus G3s are all doing well. MSR sales at this store have slowed. “It’s price sensitive, but we’re still turning about one every two weeks,” said owner Derrick Meyer. “All that said, events in Europe are defiantly adjusting the mix of what’s selling and we look to higher MSR turns in the future. This is a good time to increase our inventory of these rifles.” S&W M&P Sport IIs, as well as the occasional ArmaLite, hold the highest sales slots at this counter. A few Ruger Precisions and Americans are going to deer hunters. The 6.5 Creedmoor is hands down the number one choice of caliber here.

THE SIMPLE TRUTH

by miles hall

Is There a Problem?

When dealing with critical business issues, it helps to understand that the biggest obstacle just might be you.

T

he number of folks who get the importance and the need for quality dealers and inviting ranges is one of the unique aspects of our industry. When

an opportunity to create a store or range comes to light, they feel deeply compelled to pick up the torch and jump into the field. I have always admired the passion of these individuals; they allow our industry to connect with guests in a deeply personal and meaningful way. But the nuts and bolts of managing, merchandising, and marketing a store or range can take a toll on even the strongest person. It is one thing to create a business, and quite another to successfully manage it on a daily basis. Some entrepreneurs are just not equipped, or willing, to admit they are in trouble as they struggle to get their arms around these challenges. There are also “control freaks” who believe only they can do the job, refusing to delegate tasks to associates or trust anyone in the organization. In either case, such behavior imperils the business. When faced with a daunting challenge, it’s perfectly acceptable to admit you need help. You are a much stronger person for doing so, and asking for help is a far better approach than covering up matters in hopes that they somehow will go away on their own. Here, it helps to remember the old adage: “hope is not a strategy.” We met a dealer who we believed started out with all the right intentions. But challenging times, deep drama, and an abundance of misplaced pride ended up turning him into a very troubled soul.

48

This person was a master at micromanaging; furthermore, he trusted no one around him. That attitude was a toxin, one that eventually spread throughout the entire organization, crippling it. There were many self-inflicted problems, but the biggest was found in accounts payable. Because this micromanager trusted no one, only he would verify invoices. This took so much of his time that he not only neglected other important management issues, but he constantly paid late, costing the company a small fortune in late fees. It also eroded any goodwill that had existed between the store and its suppliers, many of which had dropped them completely due to the troubles. When we looked at the books, we found that the store had a $1.3 million order that was going hard (no return or cancellation) in just a few days. The staff had provided all the information necessary for a go/no-go decision months before, but the owner had yet to assess and act on that information. It was lost in a pile on his desk. His unwillingness to delegate nearly killed his business, as the order would have thrown the operation into bankruptcy. Fortunately, at our insistence, the order was suspended just one day before it would have been too late. We have seen other owners drift into denial and then outright anger when confronted with the price of their management style. That was the situation at the second store. When suppliers pushed this owner to pay long overdue bills, a bad situation took a terrible turn. He started using the position he had serving on industry advisory boards to threaten retaliation against any supplier that went public about his behavior.

There is a world of difference between creating a business and managing its day-to-day operations.

We discovered that the shareholders and his family had no clue that things had taken such a bad turn. But when confronted with the reality of the situation, they acted by bringing in an outside “forensic” consultant at our recommendation. He very quickly determined where the root of the problem lay. The first company did not survive. Though it gained a temporary reprieve, the owner refused to change his ways. Like many control freaks, he blamed everyone but himself for the problems he created. The community lost a valuable resource, his employees lost their livelihoods, and he lost everything. The second operation was more fortunate due to the intervention of the outsider who cleaned up matters and restructured the organization. That restructuring came at a huge personal cost, though, as the original owner was stripped of all managerial authority, essentially losing control of the business he started. All of this could have been avoided if each owner would have just admitted they had problems beyond their ability to solve and decided they needed the help of others to put their respective houses in order. The Simple Truth is to ask for help, hire folks you can trust, or go get therapy.
