Friendship Community Art Gallery Open House Friendship Community and the Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio warmly invites the public to its Lititz Gallery Open House scheduled for Thursday, August 15 from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Located in the Shoppes at Bloomfield Village (235 Bloomfield Drive, Lititz), the Lititz Gallery is the second location for Friendship Community to display pieces created by various Heart Artists. The event will highlight the current exhibit of beautiful artwork; attendees will be able to partake in engaging conversations and enjoy light refreshments while there. The Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio is a place for artists with Developmental and Intell ectual Disabilities to cel ebrate their personalities and talents through free artists work with local sell artistic masterpieces expression and collab professionals and generous while developing a sense oration. Over seventy unique volunteers to create and of purpose, value and joy.

Artists attend day and evening classes in the downtown Lancaster studio and receive instructions in a variety of techniques and media platforms. The pieces of artwork are selected through a juried process before being matted, framed and hung on the gallery walls. Friendship Community is a faith-based organization cultivating capabilities of Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities and Autism in Lancaster and Lebanon Counties since 1972. With three day programs, a home-based services program, Lifesharing and 26 residential homes serving over 200 individuals in the two counties, Friendship Community continues its vital work every day to Impact the World with Capabilities. • On August 17, 1877, though only a teenager, Billy the Kid kills his first victim, an Arizona blacksmith. Just how many men the outlaw killed is uncertain. Billy himself reportedly once claimed he had killed 21 men. • On August 13, 1902, German engineer Felix Wankel, inventor of a rotary engine, is born in Germany. Wankel reportedly came up with the idea for a new type of internal combustion gasoline engine when he was 17 years old. • On August 16, 1920, Cleveland Indians shortstop Ray Chapman is struck in the temple by a ball pitched by Carl Mays of the New York Yankees. He died 12 hours later. It was the only death as the result of a pitched ball in major league history.
• On August 14, 1945, an official announcement of Japan’s unconditional surrender to the Allies is made public to the Japanese people. Even though Japan’s War Council had submitted a formal declaration of surrender on August 10, fighting continued. In fact, two days later, a Japanese submarine sank two American ships. • On August 12, 1964, British author and journalist Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond, the world’s most famous fictional spy, dies in England. His novels about the debonair Agent 007 were based in part on Fleming’s real-life experiences. The first Bond book, “Casino Royale,” was published in 1953. • On August 15, 1979, “Apocalypse Now,” the acclaimed Vietnam War film directed by Francis Ford Coppola, opens in theaters. It told the story of an Army captain who is sent into the Cambodian jungle to kill a U.S. Special Forces colonel who has gone AWOL and is thought to be crazy. • On August 18, 1992, celebrated Boston Celtics forward Larry Bird retires. Bird entered the NBA in 1979 and was named Rookie of the Year after leading the Celtics to a 6121 record.
