Scripture: Nehemiah 4:9“But we prayed to our God, and because of them we set up a guard against them day and night.”
Nehemiah’s problem: Nehemiah faced opposition from three different fronts: trouble from enemies without, workman within and fellow Jews.
Trouble from enemies without: The faithful Jews had to face ridicule and criticism from the unbelieving Sanballat and Tobiah who mocked them before the people and the armies. You can be sure everyone was laughing. They attacked their person calling them “feeble.” They criticized the project saying the walls would be weak and unsuitable construction, “if a fox walks on the wall it will crumble.”
As a believer you will
always face opposition from the world. This is true for the believer in their personal life as well as any work for God’s glory. All that brings true glory to God will face hostility, objection and obstruction in this world; it can be no other way. What does the scripture say in 2 Timothy 3:12? “All that live Godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” The Bible says in John 15:18, 19, “If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.”
Mocking their person and criticizing the work didn’t stop the project. Now Sanballat and Tobiah take it to the next level… threatening an attack. Nehemiah 4:7, 8, 11 “Now it happened, when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammorites and the Ashdodites heard the walls of Jerusalem were being restored and the gaps were beginning to be closed, that they became
very angry, and all of them conspired together to come and attack Jerusalem and create confusion. And our adversaries said, ‘they will neither know nor see anything, till we come into their midst and kill them and cause the work to cease.’”
How did Nehemiah handle this? He prayed first, not as a last resort. Then he used his head and prepared for the worst.
Nehemiah 4:9, 13, 18
“Nevertheless we made our prayer to our God, and because of them set a watch against them day and night. And I set some of the people
according to their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows. Every one of the builders had his sword girded at his side as he built.” Pray first, not last. Seek biblical principles and use your head to develop a good plan.
Trouble from the workers: Nehemiah 4:10 “Then Judah said, ‘The strength of the laborers is failing, and there is so much rubbish that we are not able to build the wall.’” The walls were half completed from the ground level up. It was a pivotal
point in the construction… not close enough to see the culmination of the work. Workers were losing enthusiasm from the magnitude of the project and were frightened from the threat of an imminent attack. Nehemiah stationed the people by families knowing the workers would defend their family, as they should. Next, in verse fourteen, Nehemiah encourages the leaders of the people “Do not be afraid Remember the Lord, great and awesome, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives and your houses” (Nehemiah 4:14). It was God’s purpose to have the walls and gates rebuilt. He will be your strength and stamina to finish the work. Nehemiah exhorts the people ‘Remember the Lord’ and he then uses two words to describe God… great and awesome. Since God is great, His power is also great and He can enable the people to accomplish the work
They had to be reminded they serve the only true God of the universe. The Bible says in Jeremiah 10:6“There are none like you, O
Lord; You are great, and great is your name in might.” 1 Chronicles 29:11 “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power and the glory, and victory and majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and earth; Yours is the dominion, O Lord; and you exalt Yourself as head over all.”
He is also awesome. Psalm 66: 3, 5 reads, “Say to God, ‘How awesome are Your works! Come and see the works of God, Who is awesome in His deeds toward the sons of mankind.’” The God who parted the Red Sea, gave manna and water in the wilderness, gave a cloud by day for shade and a pillar of fire by night for heat in the desert will be with you.
We need reminders now and then that our God is great and awesome. He provided the materials to rebuild and He provides the motivation to continue where there is fears and fatigue. Our God is great and awesome. Next week, we see Nehemiah dealing with the trouble from fellow brethren.

GSCHTROFT
By Gladys S. Martin
Datt schteht er moppsich in sei Schtubb. Er is yuscht gscholde gwest. Er meehnt sie hen ihn hatt beyuust Un denkt, “Des is net recht!”
“Sie gleiche mich ken bissli, Des kann ich gut, graad nau sehne. Was wann ich heit nau schtarwe daed? Sie hedde all not Draehne.”
Was riecht er nau?
He thinks there to himself
How they would all cry then. If he were no longer here And they would have to prepare his funeral.
There he stands sulking in his room. He has just been scolded. He thinks they have treated him badly And thinks, “This is not right.”
“They don’t like me a bit, This I see well right now. What if I were to die today? They would all have tears then.”
He says, “They would wish then, They had not done it. The family would mourn For their poor little boy.”
His thoughts go round and round, He just cannot understand, Whey they scold him And he is so nice.
What does he smell now? Why, apple pie! He smiles and jumps from the bed And he forgets about the funeral And how his mother should be ashamed.
Sometimes thought like that small boy “Why was I born?”
And sometimes said to himself, “It would show my parents, If I were to die in here. This would really spite them.”
Still I think that like that small boy They forget their spite And were happy to rise from the dead, When it was time to eat.

On July 28, Gladys S. Martin from Route 3, Effredaa, sent us her poem GSCHTROFT. GSCHTROFT had been written about three years ago but the poet hesitated to have it appear in print. Because of the unusual nature of GSCHTROFT, it strikes us as being unique in Dutch poetry. The poet intended the poem to be humorous. Some of the folks who heard the poem read to them could identify with the small boy, others were surprised to hear a child express such morbid thoughts. Because of this, some of our SHOPPING NEWS readers will see the intended humor. Others will be able to identify with the child, while yet others will not anticipate such thoughts within a child. We are sharing GSCHTROFT with you because it echoes childish thoughts and childhood reactions which most of us have long forgotten.

The Breast Cancer Care Bag Project experienced remarkable success during the Cocalico vs. Ephrata football game on Friday, October 3, also known as “Pink Out Night.” Thanks to the generous donations of chemo care items, local breast cancer warriors assembled 334 Care Bags — more than double the 156 prepared last year. These bags will be distributed to WellSpan Health Cancer Center in Ephrata and Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, offering encouragement and comfort to patients currently undergoing treatment.
The project was strengthened through the support of
the Cocalico School District and the Athletic Department, as well as the encouragement of the Ephrata Mounts Football Team and fans, the Cocalico Marching Band, Cheerleaders, and Football Team. Their involvement helped raise awareness and provided added momentum to the success of the event.
Special contributions also enriched the bags, including cozy pink blankets, handmade breast cancer–themed earrings, and note cards with personal messages.
The Lititz Moravian Church provided a gathering space where local breast cancer warriors came together to assemble the bags. This communitywide effort demonstrates a shared commitment to supporting those facing breast cancer and serves as a powerful reminder that no one fights alone.

organization’s mission. The award was presented by Chapter Coordinator Anne Muldoon in gratitude for the Ephrata business’s ongoing partnership.
For more than two decades, the Lancaster/Lititz Chapter of Project Linus has been bringing warmth and security to children in need through handmade blankets. Powered by more than 170 volunteer “blanketeers” ranging in age from second graders to seniors over 90,
the chapter has now created and distributed more than 64,000 blankets across Lancaster County.
Volunteers of all skill levels contribute their time and talents, whether crocheting, knitting, or crafting fleece blankets. The chapter also hosts community workshops, school volunteer programs, scout troop projects, and onsite corporate volunteer days, giving people of all ages the chance to participate in its mission.
“In every blanket we give, there’s a piece of our community’s kindness stitched right in,” said Muldoon. “From classrooms to senior centers to local businesses, Lancaster County continues to come together to ensure children feel cared for and supported. That spirit of giving is what keeps Project Linus going strong.”
Blanket donations may be dropped off at Ewebiquitous or the Lititz Public Library in Lititz, Art of Recycle in
Ephrata, or Yoder’s Country Market in New Holland. The chapter also accepts donations of new cotton fabric, yarn, fleece, thread, and taxdeductible monetary contributions.
