ILLINOIS STATE DENTAL SOCIETY FOUNDATION TO HOST FREE DENTAL CARE The Illinois State Dental Society Foundation will host the Mission of Mercy, or “MOM,” at the Gateway Center in Collinsville on July 15-16, 2016. More than 1,000 volunteer dentists, hygienists, dental assistants, dental students and others from throughout Illinois will provide an estimated $1 million in free dental care to patients who would not otherwise have access to necessary treatment. “We are prepared to see 1,000 patients per day, and hope to accommodate more if we can,” said Dr. Randall Markarian, a Swansea orthodontist who serves as MOM Co-Chair. “In order to treat as many patients in the best way possible, the patient’s priority condition will be served first.” Here are some important things that prospective patients should know:

• Not all dental services will be available. Emphasis will be on basic dental care — fillings, extractions and cleanings. • No appointments will be taken. • No pre-registration is available. • Care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis. • Doors will open at 6:00 a.m. • There are no income eligibility requirements; anyone can receive treatment. • No false teeth (dentures) will be made. • Patients with serious health problems may not be able to receive dental treatment (for example, extremely high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, and severe disabilities). • Patients will not receive all the dental work that is needed; the most critical

dental problems will receive priority treatment. • Recommended items for patients to bring to MOM: * List of current medications and a one day supply. * Baby supplies for a full day — diapers, formula, etc. * Reading glasses (for help in completing paperwork). * Something to help you pass the time such as reading material, knitting, crossword puzzles, etc. * Water and snacks. * Sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, umbrella). If a patient is in severe pain NOW, don’t wait until the Mission of Mercy. Seek treatment immediately! The Mission of Mercy will serve to highlight the serious problem that many Illinois citizens have in ac-

cessing dental care. The event will relieve some suffering, but it won’t solve the problem. Only the Illinois legislature can provide the solution through adequately funding the Medicaid program in Illinois. “Prevention remains the best plan of action,” adds MOM co-chair Dr. Darryll Beard, a general dentist in Waterloo. “If patients maintain good oral health habits at home, and receive basic dental services and restorative services by a dentist, it drastically reduces the need for expensive emergency room visits and extensive treatment, which typically cost ten times more than if the patient had originally been treated by a dentist.” More information on the Mission of Mercy event is available at the Illinois State Dental Society Foundation’s w e b s i t e a t w w w. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

How to Pray with Power Mankind is impressed and obsessed with power. Americans have power walks, power drinks, power neckties, powerful machines, and seek more powerful computers. But the most underestimated and underused power on earth is prayer. Even medical science has substantiated the benefits of prayer. Prayer moves the hand of God. Develop these keys to prayer that will enable you to pray with power and change your life. POVERTY OF SPIRIT is the basic requirement of prayer. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus revealed a paradigm shift from the way most people think and act. “Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.” (Matthew 5:3) This means to recognize our need for God. Until you recognize your need for God and His help you will never pray with power. God gives grace to the humble. (I Peter 5:5-6) PRAISING GOD brings you into the presence of God. Jesus taught in the

5

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

Lord’s Prayer to begin prayer by “hallowing” the Father’s name. (Matthew 6:9) In the passage of the triumphant entry Jesus sent his disciples to get a donkey for him to ride into Jerusalem. He told them to tell the owner of the donkey, “The Lord has need of it.” (Mark 11:4) As he rode into Jerusalem the multitudes gave him praise. (Matthew 21:16) God doesn’t need our gold, silver, or sacrifices, but he does desire our praise and worship. (John 4:23-24) Praise brings God’s presence, power, and a delight to prayer. PURITY OF HEART brings power in prayer. Jesus first cleansed the temple and then decreed, “My house will be called a house of prayer.” (Matthew 21:12-13) Jesus promised, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8) A friend posted this truth on Facebook, “You cannot pray for an A on a test and study for a B. You cannot pr ay f or a f a it h f u l relationship and still live an unfaithful life. Moral of the story is you cannot pray for something and act less. Don’t question my God and

His abilities when your actions don’t match your prayers.” (@SpiritualWord) David prayed, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit with-in me.” (Psalms 51:10) Only the blood of Jesus can cleanse your heart from sin. (Psalms 51:6-7) PERSUASIVE PRAYER is the prayer of faith. The disciples were amazed when Jesus cursed a barren fig tree and it withered from the roots up. Jesus told them, “Have faith in God . . . whoever says to this mountain, be taken up and cast into the sea, and does not doubt . . . but believes . . . it shall be granted him.” (Mark 11:22-24) Believe Jesus’ promises. (John 14:12-14) A great man of prayer, Tuesday Thomas Watson, said, “Prayer is the key, and faith is the hand that turns it, and claims the blessing.” PARDON THROUGH PRAYER keeps the channels of prayer power open.

In the Lord’s Prayer Jesus taught us to pray, “And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.” (Matthew 6:12) David said, “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear.” (Psalms 66:16-17) The most powerful prayer is the humble cry to God for forgiveness. (I John 1:9) Forgiving those who have hurt you is a necessary key for freedom and power in prayer. (Matthew 6:14) Do you want power for living and power in prayer? Develop and use these keys in prayer and your life will be radically changed. And prayer will be a delight! “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord J e s u s C h r i s t .” ( I Thessalonians 5:23) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

As I walked into church Sunday morning I ran into an old friend whom I'm always glad to see. The first thing he said after our usual greeting hug, with great concern in his eyes, was, "Cathy, this country is a mess." I could only agree with him. Then the service started with a prayer for our neighbors, friends, families and country. Then it hit me, the answer to all things is in Christ. This country needs to turn the clock back in time to when we as children were taught to love one another, to respect others, to care for one another, and to respect authority, back to a time when mothers and father faced the full responsibility of teaching their children right from wrong. I realize there are parents and grandparents still teaching their children and grandchildren right from wrong, but the reality is there are not as many today as yesterday. God bless those that are, because that's our only hope; the children are the future. In my opinion, last week was a heartbreaking week for America, for all of us, starting with the lives lost in Louisiana and Minnesota. In Dallas, Texas, five police officers were killed and nine individuals were wounded (seven officers of the law and two civilians), becoming casualties of a lone deranged gunman in an ambush style attack in downtown Dallas, Texas. The only motivation that anyone could come up with was that the sniper was protesting the officer shootings in Louisiana and Minnesota. This shooter was taken out by a robotic bomb after a standoff with police. That was the deadliest event for U.S. police officers since September 11, 2001. And in this tragedy the same strategy was in play as on September 11, 2001 when the men and women in blue ran toward the twin towers to protect and save as many lives as they could, costing many of

them their own lives. The same held true last week in Dallas, Texas during a peaceful "Black Lives Matter" movement protest. As the shots rang out, those brave officers ran toward the gunfire to protect and save as many as they could, costing five brave men in blue their very lives and leaving seven wounded. The suspect's motivation was revealed in negotiations when he said he was upset about recent police shootings so he wanted to kill as many white people, especially white officers, as he could and he said that he acted alone. I personally can't imagine the complete fear that had to grip all involved in this tragic event as the hundreds protesting ran in every direction and the police charged forward! I've heard some compare today to the late 1960s. I lived through those days. They weren't great days, but if this great divide doesn't stop soon, our children and grandchildren will see the same thing. That's certainly not something most of us want. Last Friday Barack Obama ordered flags to be flown at half staff in honor of those that lost their lives and those that were wounded in Dallas, Texas. That's the 67th time he's done this since becoming President, more than any other president, according to USA Today. In my mind that says it all. So in the end, what's the answer to the racial divide? In my mind, I answered that question in the second paragraph. The other issue that I found heartbreaking last week was the corruption of the current U.S. government administration, which I have absolutely no respect for, and I have even less respect for Hillary Clinton. FBI Director James Comey was, in my opinion, nothing but a sacrificial lamb for Hillary Clinton's corruption, and he took the fall for U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch's unethical meeting with Billy

Clinton, as reported in the New York Times. Mr. Comey said that Mrs. Clinton had failed to return "thousands" of work related emails to the State Department, despite her public insistence to the contrary, and that her lawyers may have destroyed classified material that the FBI was unable to recover. He also described her handling of classified material as Secretary of State as "negligent," a legal term he avoided using last Tuesday. But the biggest problem — and I have many issues with both Clintons — was Comey said his team of investigators had not found clear evidence that Mrs. Clinton intended to break the law governing the use of classified materials and explained that prosecutors have 'grave concerns" about using the lower legal standard of "gross negligence" in their handling and have applied it only once in the last century. To make matters even worse — if they could be any worse — Republicans expressed particular frustration with Comey when he said that the FBI did not examine Mrs. Clinton's statement to Congress about her email server to determine whether she had perjured herself. And this woman wants to be our next President. My God, people, wake up! The bottom line is, in my opinion, she is guilty as hell, and the FBI Director took the fall for Loretta Lynch. What a sad time for America! Leaving you with a final thought, again, one that was shared in church last Sunday morning: The only way evil can triumph is if good men do nothing. Until next week. Students at Centralia Jr. High School got to step into the shoes of area professionals recently during the Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce’s Real World Challenge. Small teams of students were each assigned to a participating business and presented with a realworld, job-related task to perform for the business or organization as if they were employees. On Monday, June 27, the students were brought to their assigned business place where they were given a tour and a

rundown of the various employees’ tasks. Then the students were given their challenge which they would complete during scheduled times throughout the week either at the Junior High or at the business site. Examples of challenges were to create a marketing video for a company or design a t-shirt. Participating students got invaluable hands-on experience which will help them on their way when they enter the workforce in a few more years. At the end of the week, participating

businesspeople treated their student workers to lunch at the Elks Lodge where the students received a certificate and presented their finished work to the public. Participating businesses and organizations were: Centralia Stationery, Monken, E. Kracht Photography, St. Mary’s Hospital, Winning Edge, The Shoppers Weekly Papers, AGE Affordable Gas and Electric, Surgery Center, Rent One and Calumet Street Christian Church.

Salad Dressings How many times have you heard, "Eat your greens"? My grandmother was famous for this old saying, especially since, like most kids, I didn't like them. But as I got older, I learned to eat them because they were good for me. Then I learned to eat them because I liked them. But who eats greens without dressing? I found some old recipes for salad dressing that I wanted to share this week, so enjoy!

DEAR P AW ’ S CORNER: My 1-yearold dog, “Clemente,” gets extremely anxious whenever I leave home. He barks nonstop, as my neighbor has mentioned repeatedly. I put him in his crate whenever I leave, but it doesn’t matter if I’m gone for 20 minutes or all day — he will not stop barking until I get home. I tried leaving him out of the crate when I go out for short periods, but then he just barks, claws at the door and scatters my shoes everywhere. What else can I do? — Beth N., Brooklyn, New York

DEAR BETH: Reducing your pet’s anxiety when you leave home can be really tough. Regardless of his history — whether he was a shelter adoption or brought home from a litter — Clemente’s perception is that you are leaving, and he doesn’t know why or for how long. How will he eat if you’re gone for days? Why won’t you take him with you? A lot of things are running through his mind. Even if you just go out of sight for a few minutes, some pets get really worried. I’ve come out of the bathroom to find my dog and cats clustered together, staring up at me mutely with eyes that seem to say, “Where did you GO?” There are many things to try, all of which involve reassuring Clemente that you will come home. CAVALETTO VOTES TO FULLY FUND K-12 EDUCATION, SCHOOLS CAN OPEN ON TIME State Representative John Cavaletto (RSalem), member of the Elementar y and Secondary Education Committee and the Appropriations Public Safety Committee, announced recently that l e g i s l at i o n p a s s e d (Senate Bill 2047) to fully fund K-12 education for FY17 (full year), ensuring that our schools open on time and have the resources they need for the entire school year. K-12 will receive $11.1 billion from General Revenue Funds (GRF), other state funds, and federal funds. The stopgap budget will also ensure that critical state operations and services continue through the

end of this year, including items like higher education, human services, and prisons. “This is an historic investment in education which will fund our schools at 100% foundation level for the first time in seven years,” said Rep. Cavaletto. “That means the vast majority of school districts will receive more than they did the year before and now we can focus on how to improve our broken school funding f o r m u l a ,” a d d e d Cavaletto. This bi-partisan agreement will ensure schools are fully funded and open on time in the fall, and will protect Illinois taxpayers. The plan also

includes $75 million for early childhood education, and a new, statewide $250 million equity grant for the poorest school districts. Additionally, this legislation provides for a 6-month, ‘stop-gap’ allocation for other state services including the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) which will get money for roads, bridges, railway, and airports around the state. Nearly $1 billion will go towards universities and community colleges to be able to open for fall classes and take them through December, while we continue to work on a full budget to cover the remainder of FY17.
