JCCC announces 2020 Citizen of the Year The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce Cheryl Settle as the 2020 Citizen of the Year.

The chamber has named a Citizen of the Year as far back as 1945, and with past recipients like Carl Schweinfurth, Dr. Andy Hall and Clarence E. Brehm, Settle is in good company.

“I’m extremely honored to be selected,” Settle said. “There are a lot of worthwhile people in Mt. Vernon who could receive this award. I feel blessed that [the chamber] chose me and hope that I keep proving worthy of it.”

Citizen of the Year is chosen by the Chamber’s Past Presidents’ Council. This year’s Vice President of that council, Tony Wielt, said Settle was one of many wonderful nominees this year.

“This community is blessed to have so many community members give back, and the nominees for Citizen of the Year were all remarkable,” Wielt said. “Cheryl’s involvement with YMCA, Cedarhurst, FUMC, Spero Family Services — just to name a few of the

organizations that she supports with her time and talents — rose her nomination to the top.”

Settle served as president of the board at the YMCA and volunteered on two occasions to be the interim CEO. She is an administrative counselor and co-chair of the craft fair and preview parties at Cedarhurst Center for the Arts. She and her husband Kevin are Platinum members of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce; she is very active at the First United Methodist Church; she served on the Board of Directors at Spero Family Services; and she has been actively participating in volunteer work at multiple Jefferson County schools.

“I do what I do because it makes me feel good about giving back to Mt. Vernon,” Settle said. “I don’t do it for recognition.”

Several applications came in on behalf of Settle, including one from Jefferson County Chamber Past President and former Citizen of the Year, Cheryl Foley.

“She is one amazing woman,” Foley said.

“She is very talented, and has great leadership skills. She is not afraid of challenges and the

combination of her vision of the future and her willingness to work hard make her a tremendous leader. Cheryl has truly made Mt. Vernon a better place to live and do business through her unwavering involvement and leadership in numerous community organizations.”

Traditionally the Citizen of the Year has been announced at the Chamber’s Annual Banquet, but this year the award will be presented at the January 16 luncheon and State of the City address held at the DoubleTree by Hilton.

“This is a small adjustment from the Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet where this award has previously been recognized,” Wielt said. “However, we felt like this award reaches far beyond the membership of the chamber and the State of the City address seemed to be a more appropriate venue for it. We invite all of her friends to join us for lunch on Thursday, January 16 as we honor Cheryl Settle as the 2020 Citizen of the Year.”

Last week, the House of Representatives passed a non-binding resolution amending and limiting the War Powers Act. Obviously, this resolution was brought to the floor by those who felt President Trump overstepped his authority in taking out Qasem Soleimani.

During the resolution debate, Florida Representative Brian Mast stepped to the podium for his brief two-minute speech. He delivered what I consider an incredibly logical and passionate speech that all Americans and others should read or hear. He said:

And the danger would be worth it. For those who vote yes, they see that he’s killed hundreds of our service members but can still not find the justification to kill him, because unlike our fallen heroes, they lack the courage to endure danger.

Only someone like Brian Mast, a veteran who served in Afghanistan and lost both of his legs in a roadside bomb incident, could deliver such a passionate speech about courage.

Crenshaw has been very vocal in this past week over the hypocrisy and politicizing of many, including the media. He claims that they know they’re passing false or misleading information but will not allow President Trump to be right in any action he takes. Examples include Elizabeth Warren claiming that targeting Soleimani had little to do with national security, but rather served to distract from the upcoming Senate impeachment. Mayor Pete Buttigieg, R epres ent at ive Tu lsi Gabbard and others were trying to lay joint blame on President Trump for the downing of the jetliner by Iran. News anchors were showing huge Iranian crowds and leading us to believe that all Iranians have miraculously come together to mourn Soleimani’s death. And then Chris Matthews of CNN compared their crowds similar to that for Princess Diana or Elvis. And the examples go on and on.

On a final note, after three days of denial, last Saturday Iran admitted to accidentally shooting down the Ukrainian jetliner. Supposedly, the Iranian airports were ordered to be shut down during their missile firing into Iraq, but the order was not received at the Tehran Airport. Does this sound like there could be more to this story?

Jeremy Bradford elected to Illinois Health and Hospital Association board of trustees Good Samaritan Hospital in January 2019. He was named President of SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in March 2019.

Critical need for blood and platelet donors after the holidays

The American Red Cross currently has a critical need for blood donors of all blood types — especially type O — and platelet donors to make an appointment now to give and help replenish the blood supply after the holiday weeks.

Right now, the Red Cross has less than a three-day supply of type O blood. To help tackle the critical need, the Red Cross and NFL are working together to offer one lucky winner a trip to Super Bowl LIV in Miami.

During the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s, about 500 fewer blood drives were hosted by volunteer sponsor groups than required to meet patient needs. Many groups postpone blood drives during the winter holidays when travel and holiday activities may make it challenging for many donors to give.

Donors are urged to make an appointment to give now using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood. org, calling 1-800-RED

CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

What would baseball be without the hot dog, or derby day without the traditional mint julep? Theme parties work well for sporting events, so why not invite friends and family to enjoy the Super Bowl. This year it falls on February 2.

Even though (bite my tongue) I'm not into football, I can participate in the excitement of the game by planning and preparing the food and enjoying my company.

After all, home parties are the answer to front row seats at these costly events.

The recipes below are flexible, simple and designed for the host and hostess to enjoy the party as well. Start by laying out the corn chips, dips and freshly cut veggies. Some recipes for dips that everyone will love are included here.

Tex-Mex Tostada Dip

2 (1 lb.) cans refried beans 3-4 mashed avocados 1 T. lemon or lime juice 1 clove garlic (crushed) Salt and pepper to taste 1-1/2 c. sour cream

1/2 c. Cheddar cheese (grated) 1-2 medium tomatoes (chopped) 3-4 green onions (chopped) 3/4 c. fresh or prepared salsa 1 can pitted black olives 1 (16 oz.) bag tortilla chips

Spread beans 1/2 inch thick on platter. Mix avocado, lemon juice, garlic, salt and pepper. Spread avocado mixture over beans and top with layers of sour cream, cheese, tomatoes, onions and salsa. Garnish with whole olives and serve with tortilla chips.

Serve 10-12.

Spinach-Yogurt Dip

1 (10 oz.) pkg. frozen chopped spinach 2 T. olive or vegetable oil 1/4 c. onion (chopped fine) 1 c. plain yogurt 4 oz. Feta cheese (crumbled) 2 cloves garlic (crushed) 1 tsp. fresh mint leaves (chopped) or 1/2 tsp. dry mint leaves

1/4 tsp. Lawry's seasoning salt 1/4 tsp. dill 1/8 tsp. white pepper 1 tsp. lemon juice 2 T. almonds, pecans or walnuts (chopped fine)

Thaw and squeeze excess liquid from spinach. Chop fine. In frying pan, heat oil and cook onion until tender. Stir in spinach and saute for 2 more minutes before removing from heat. Combine spinach mixture with remaining ingredients until thoroughly blended. Cover and refrigerate until ready for service. Serve with raw vegetables or with French bread or crackers. Makes 1-1/2 cups.

Shrimp Dill Dip

8 oz. pkg. cream cheese 1/2 c. yogurt 1 T. fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice 1/2 tsp. Tabasco 1 small clove garlic (crushed) 3 T. green onion (chopped fine)

In a covered container, cream together mayonnaise and cream cheese until blended and smooth. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Refrigerate until ready for use.

Great on wafers, raw vegetables, in sandwiches or on sliced French bread baguettes.

Makes 1-1/2 cups.

In the largest pot you can find (you're cooking for masses) cover beans with boiling water and boil an additional 3 minutes. Set aside. In a big skillet, saute beef, onions and garlic in oil until browned. Add beef mixture and remaining ingredients to beans.

Cook slowly for about 2-3 hours or until beans are soft. Stir occasionally. May be topped with Parmesan cheese before serving. Serve with tortillas, sour dough bread or crackers on the side. This recipe serves 45. Don’t be afraid to cut it in half, or freeze what’s left.

1 c. milk 1/3 c. vegetable oil 1 egg (beaten)

Sift together dry ingredients and set aside. In a mixing bowl, beat together milk, oil and egg until thoroughly combined. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and add milk mixture all at once. Stir quickly until batter is moistened but still lumpy.

Pour batter into greased muffin cups or muffin papers and bake at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Variations: Add 1/2 c. nuts, blueberries or fruit. The Mt. Vernon Rotary held their first meeting of the year at noon on Tuesday, January 7 at their new location of Crossroads Hospital. The club wants to thank Crossroads for providing a weekly meeting space. Since the Club had a new meeting place for their first meeting day of the new year, President Megan Schmidt thought it would be a good time to go over some Rotary knowledge. Rotary is an international membership organization made up of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing communities and improving lives across the world.

I’ve been following with great interest the ongoing impeachment hearings, etc. that have been dominating the media in all forms, especially on TV. Now that the “investigation� phase (if you can call it that) has concluded and is supposedly ready for the trial phase in the U.S. Senate, I wonder if all the senators of the upper house should be allowed to be involved in the senate trial.

The Democrats are accusing President Trump of misusing his office to target a political opponent, in the form of asking the Ukrainian President to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter and their involve-

ment in alledged corruption. If we are going to apply this premise then it MUST be applied across the board. Senators Warren (already caught in multiple lies), Booker, Klobuchar, Harris & Sanders must be omitted from the senate trial/vote as they cannot be allowed to participate as they are or have been President Trumps political opponents in the upcoming presidential race. Their unbiased status cannot be assured. By the same token Senators Schumer, Feinstein, Durbin, Hirono, Blumenthal (claimed to be a Vietnam Veteran and isn’t) and several other Democrat senators have already been recorded in interviews stating that they absolutely believe President Trump to be guilty of the allegations posed and

scriptive quote that covers it: “Looks like someone’s crawdadding.�

Maybe not, they might enjoy their own projectiles in their feet.

Mt. Vernon 1950 This view from the courthouse in Mt. Vernon is from about 1950. WWII was over and times were good. Retail business was the mainstay of small Southern Illinois towns with drugstores, dress shops, and hardware outlets selling everything from paper clips to shovels and battery powered radios.

There were no cellphones, no internet, no video games. People actually got out and went shopping for their daily needs. They went to specialty shops that may only sell one type of item, but department stores were the epitome of convenience.

Not only did they sell warm coats for winter, they also had toasters and perfumes.

It was even common to find shotguns and ammunition.

Times were very different and no one thought anything amiss to see a pickup truck with a rifle or two on a rack in the back window.

Walking into a five-anddime store would fill your nostrils with the smell of popcorn and cologne and fresh flowers, and the floors were swept with that red

sawdust that always seemed to be present in a pile in a corner somewhere beside the broom. You were always greeted with a smile and genuine help in finding anything you needed. A new car was something to be admired and discussed, especially if you had one of those “Hydra-Matic” transmissions that shifted gears all by itself! And you never put gas in your own car, it was somehow understood that you would probably go to prison for breaking the law with such a dangerous risk! It was done by a uniformed attendant who always remembered to wash your windshield for you.

Times were different, and modern conveniences are great, but progress has caused the loss of many things from our past.

Unfortunately, one of those losses may be human contact. I don’t mind having paper towels shipped straight to my door, but I hope we never lose the chance to place real money in the hand of a real clerk for a real apple. An Amazon box never smiled at me.

Girl Scout cookie program underway in Southern Illinois

The Girl Scout Cookie Program in Southern Illinois will be taking orders now through January 26. In addition, cookie booths will be held February 21 through March 15.

Deepening Your Walk with God Through Prayer The New Year and new decade could be your best year yet! I am excited as I look with expectation to a New Year. Isaiah prophesied, “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31) The best way to supercharge your spiritual batteries is to wait upon God in prayer.

One of the most explosive miracles of God happened to a beggar seated at the temple gate called Beautiful. The healing of this lame beggar brought t hous ands into t he kingdom of God. (Acts 3; 4) Let’s look at this miracle and see how we can deepen our walk with God. PRAY REGULARLY AND FERVENTLY. “Now Peter and John went up together to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.” (Acts 3;1) The Jews observed three times

of prayer — morning (9:00); afternoon (5:00); evening (sunset). Devout Jews and Gentiles who believed in God would often go to the temple to pray. A consistent, regular, and disciplined time of prayer will deepen your walk with God. In the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus asked his disciples who had fallen asleep in prayer, “Could you not watch with me one hour?”

(Matthew 25:40) We have this promise concerning prayer. “The effective fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”

(James 5:16) Sometimes our prayer seems so feeble. Let God simplify your prayers.

Ephesians 3:20 says God is able “to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think.” After we pray, God will add his own miracle power to our prayer! Pray in the Spirit.

(Romans 8:26-27) Combine fasting with prayer. (Matthew 17:21) Jesus promises a reward for those who fast and pray. (Matthew 6:27-28) DEV E L OP YOU R SPIRITUAL CONFIDENCE. (Acts 3:2) The

lame beggar didn’t feel worthy to go into the temple for prayer. Many Christians miss out on God’s blessings because they don’t believe they have been made righteous

by Christ’s sacrifice.

(Romans 8:1; 5:9) You will never expect answers from God if you think he is angry with you.

DON’T ACT LIKE A SLAVE WHO THINKS HE MUST BEG FOR THINGS. The lame beggar was laid daily at the gate called Beautiful to beg for alms. (Acts 3:5-6) As a believer you are an heir of God. “Draw near with confidence to the throne of grace.” (Hebrews 4:16) Be bold! You can ask for anything.

EXPECT AND PRAY BOLDLY. Peter said, “Look at us.” (Acts 3:5-6) The lame beggar needed to take his eyes off of himself and his disability and put them on God’s ability. The beggar was looking for alms. God had something better and bigger. Don’t limit God with small prayers or vague prayers. Pray specifically and boldly.

(Hebrews 4:16) Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah’s anointing and he was granted it. When threatened the church prayed for boldness. (Acts 4:25-30) Be aggressive against the devil. (James 4:7) PRAY WITH FAITH IN THE NAME OF JESUS.

“Then Peter said, ‘Silver and gold have I none, but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.’” (Acts 3:6) The lame beggar received strength in his ankles and jumped up and went leaping and walking with Peter and John into the temple.

There is power in the name of Jesus. Crowds gathered in amazement. Notice what Peter said as he preached Jesus to the people, “And his name, through faith in his name, hath made this man strong . . . yes, the faith which is by him hath given this man perfect soundness.”

(Acts 3:11-16) Jesus said, “Whatsoever you ask in my name, that will I do.”

(John 14:13-14) PRAY THE PRAYER OF REPENTANCE AND BE REFRESHED. “Repent, therefore, and be converted that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.” (Acts 3:19-20) Are there sins and attitudes that defile you?

Repent and be cleansed by the blood of Jesus.

When prayer becomes your habit, miracles become your lifestyle.

Never give up on prayer, no matter what comes your way.
