Yesteryear’s Memories By Jay Borum

LOOKING FOR A CHURCH HOME? YOU’VE FOUND IT WITH US. Sermon Summary: January 12, 2020 Sermon Title: “Holy Spirit Foundation” We see the hand of the Holy Spirit in every major event in the Bible, from creation, when it says the Spirit of God hovered above the face of the waters, to the Holy Spirit in the Holy of Holies in the tabernacle and temple, to David writing about the Holy Spirit in his psalms, to the prophets giving prophecies under the influence of the Holy Spirit, to the conception of Jesus, when the Holy Spirit moved on Mary, and when the Holy Spirit filled John the Baptist while he was in the womb, and filled John’s mother when she saw Mary the mother of Jesus! If you look close enough, you can see the Holy Spirit working behind the scenes throughout the Bible, not just in the book of Acts. In the Old Testament, the word “Spirit” of God in Hebrew means “the breath of God” or “wind of God.” In the New Testament, the word “Spirit” means the same thing!

This impressive building was constructed at the corner of Locust and Broadway in Centralia in 1926. The very design was intended to impress the local townspeople with the security and solid safety of the new bank. The large columns and the iron grillwork were meant to give the feeling of stability and looked like an impregnable fortress. The 1920’s was a decade of good times. People were enjoying prosperity and many people moved from the country into cities. The farmers were producing huge amounts of crops, and it seemed that life couldn’t be better for millions. But

just about three years after the bank was completed, the New York Stock Exchange crashed. September 29th was marked Black Friday and the country sunk into a pit of debt and hardship. The plentiful harvests of the decade translated into lower profits for local farmers. Times here were tough, but the newly built bank eventually survived the Great Depression and carried on banking activity for over eighty years. The building has been revamped and now serves as the City Hall of Centralia. Hopefully the strength of the building will be echoed by the strength and tenacity of the local citizens and will continue to be a symbol of good times for the area.

Shimkus announces final Valentines for Heroes collection As he enters his last year in office, Congressman John Shimkus (R , Illinois-15) will be wrapping up a number of traditions. One of the most prominent is his Valentines for Heroes program, which he is kicking off for the 13th and final time. “Since its beginning in 2008, Valentines for Heroes has continued to grow, year after year,” Shimkus said. “It has gotten to the point where people can’t wait to get started. We begin to get calls immediately after the New Year, wanting to know when we will be collecting. The answer is now.” The congressman’s district offices will collect valentines for distribution throughout the region to veterans and active-duty militar y men and women. They may be dropped off or mailed by February 7 to C o n g r e s s m a n Jo h n Shimkus at:

• 15 Professional Park Drive, Maryville, IL 62062; • City Hall, Room 12, 110 East Locust Street, Harrisburg, IL 62946; • or 201 Nor t h Vermilion Street, Suite 325, Danville, IL 61832. All valentines are reviewed for appropriate content before being distributed. In order to be accepted, they must be signed with first names only, should not include last names or addresses, and cannot be directed to a specific person or those of a specific faith. Because many will go to hospitals, candy and glitter are not allowed. Due to the review process, contributors are highly encouraged not to include envelopes. Constituents may call t h e c o n g r e s s m a n’s Maryville Office at 618288-7190 with any questions about the program.

Deepening Your Walk with God Through Prayer

will deepen your walk with God. In the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus asked his disciples who had fallen asleep in prayer. “Could you not watch with me one hour?” (Matthew 25:40) We have this promise concerning prayer. “The effective fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” (James 5:16) Sometimes our prayer seems so feeble. Let God simplify your prayers. Ephesians 3:20 says God is able “to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think.” After we pray, God will add his own miracle power to our prayer! Pray in the Spirit. (Romans 8:26-27) Combine fast ing wit h prayer. (Matthew 17:21) Jesus promises a reward for those w h o f a s t an d pr ay. (Matthew 6:27-28) DEVELOP YOUR SPIRITUAL CONFIDENCE. (Acts 3:2) The lame beggar didn’t feel worthy to go into the temple for prayer. Many Christians miss out on God’s blessings because

The New Year and new decade could be your best year yet! I am excited as I look with expectation to a New Year. Isaiah prophesied, “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31) The best way to supercharge your spiritual batteries is to wait upon God in prayer. One of the most explosive miracles of God happened to a beggar seated at the temple gate called Beautiful. The healing of this lame beggar brought t h o u s a n d s i nt o t h e kingdom of God. (Acts 3; 4) Let’s look at this miracle and see how we can deepen our walk with God. PRAY REGULARLY AND FERVENTLY. “Now Peter and John went up together to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.” (Acts 3;1) The Jews observed three times of prayer — morning (9:00); afternoon (5:00); evening (sunset). Devout Jews and Gentiles who believed in God would often go to the temple to pray. A consistent, regular, and disciplined time of prayer

In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.’” (Acts 3:6) The lame beggar received strength in his ankles and jumped up and went leaping and walking with Peter and John into the temple. There is power in the name of Jesus. Crowds gathered in amazement. Notice what Peter said as he preached Jesus to the people, “And his name, through faith in his name, hath made this man strong . . . yes, the faith which is by him hath given this man perfect soundness.” (Acts 3:11-16) Jesus said, “Whatsoever you ask in my name, that will I do.” (John 14:13-14) PRAY THE PRAYER OF REPENTANCE AND BE REFRESHED. “Repent, therefore, and be converted that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.” (Acts 3:19-20) Are there sins and attitudes that defile you? Repent and be cleansed by the blood of Jesus. When prayer becomes your habit, miracles become your lifestyle. Never give up on prayer, no matter what comes your way.

they don’t believe they have been made righteous by Christ’s sacrifice. (Romans 8:1; 5:9) You will never expect answers from God if you this he is angry with you. DON’T ACT LIKE A SLAVE WHO THINKS HE MUST BEG FOR THINGS. The lame beggar was laid daily at the gate called Beautiful to beg for alms. (Acts 3:5-6) As a believer you are an heir of God. “Draw near with confidence to the throne of grace.” (Hebrews 4:16) Be bold! You can ask for anything. EXPECT AND PRAY BOLDLY. Peter said, “Look at us.” (Acts 3:5-6) The lame beggar needed to take his eyes off of himself and his disability and put them on God’s ability. The beggar was looking for alms. God had something better and bigger. Don’t limit God with small prayers or vague prayers. Pray specifically and boldly. (Hebrews 4:16) Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah’s anointing and he was granted it. When threatened the church prayed for boldness. (Acts 4:25-30) Be aggressive against the devil. (James 4:7) PRAY WITH FAITH IN THE NAME OF JESUS. “Then Peter said, ‘Silver and gold have I none, but such as I have give I thee:

Super Bowl Dips and More

What would baseball be without the hot dog, or derby day without the traditional mint julep? Theme parties work well for sporting events, so why not invite friends and family to enjoy the Super Bowl. This year it falls on February 2. Even though (bite my tongue) I'm not into football, I can participate in the excitement of the game by planning and preparing the food and enjoying my company. After all, home parties are the answer to front row seats at these costly events. The recipes below are flexible, simple and designed for the host and hostess to enjoy the party as well. Start by laying out the corn chips, dips and freshly cut veggies. Some recipes for dips that everyone will love are included here. 2 (1 lb.) cans refried beans 3-4 mashed avocados 1 T. lemon or lime juice 1 clove garlic (crushed) Salt and pepper to taste 1-1/2 c. sour cream

Tex-Mex Tostada Dip

1/2 c. Cheddar cheese (grated) 1-2 medium tomatoes (chopped) 3-4 green onions (chopped) 3/4 c. fresh or prepared salsa 1 can pitted black olives 1 (16 oz.) bag tortilla chips

Spread beans 1/2 inch thick on platter. Mix avocado, lemon juice, garlic, salt and pepper. Spread avocado mixture over beans and top with layers of sour cream, cheese, tomatoes, onions and salsa. Garnish with whole olives and serve with tortilla chips. Serve 10-12.

for Seniors 55 & Older

Last week, the House of Representatives passed a non-binding resolution amending and limiting the War Powers Act. Obviously, this resolution was brought to the floor by those who felt President Trump overstepped his authority in taking out Qasem Soleimani. During the resolution debate, Florida Representative Brian Mast stepped to the podium for his brief two-minute speech. He delivered what I consider an incredibly logical and passionate speech that all Americans and others should read or hear. He said: “Make no mistake, Madam Speaker, this resolution is about the killing of Soleimani. He was a terrorist, no different than alBaghdadi, Za Cary, Osama bin Laden, Khalid Sheikh

Mohammed. No different than ISIS or Al-Qaeda. And he was responsible for the deaths of our men and women, and I know most in here haven’t seen or smelled or touched that kind of death, but let me tell you about it. They were burned alive inside of their Humvees. Their lungs were scorched by the flames of the explosions. The vehicle fragments were blown into their skulls. Some of them were paralyzed. Some of them had their arms blown off. Some had their legs blown off. Some will never see again. Some will never be recognized again by those who knew them previously. Each and every one of them, they were the credible explanation for deleting this terrorist target from our world. And no doubt, it is dangerous to take out a terrorist target. But a coward is somebody who

Currently, most predeparture costs are covered by a flat fee of $6,750 (which can be paid in four installments). It doesn’t cost a Rotary club anything to sponsor outbound students, and any assistance provided to the sponsored student is entirely discretionary. The host club will pay room, board, school tuition and fees, and a small stipend of $75/month. If you know of a student, or are the parent of a student interested in studying abroad while attending high school, please send an email to: district6510RYE@ gmail to ask about options. To host an inbound student, clubs should budget around $2,000 for mandatory costs, and find two to three host families

Some clubs provide assistance with optional items such as a cell phone, some school expenses like prom and homecoming, purchase gifts and other miscellaneous items. Rotar y District 6510 takes the kids (inbound and outbound) on a trip to Chicago which besides being a site-seeing trip, serves as training for students who have never traveled or encountered the issues that may be associated with travel. Rotary’s Youth Exchange program is always looking for qualified host families. Having a student from another country is a challenging experience that will enrich every member of your family. By opening your hearts and home, you share in international understanding and fellowship. The Centralia Rotary Club held their weekly meeting on January 6. District 6510’s Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) Outbound Coordinator David Vail was the speaker. He spoke about Rotary’s Youth Exchange program and how this avenue of service supports Rotary International’s focus area of promot ing p e ace through cultural understanding. He began by showing a short video titled “Trovato” produced by a former RYE high school student who went to Italy to study for a year. Exchange students have a chance to develop lifelong leadership skills, learn a new language and culture by immersion, build lasting friendships with young people from around the world, and become a global citizen. The RYE program has a 97% success rate with only 3% of the students not completing their exchange year. David’s Rotary club hosts inbound students from foreign countries and sponsors outbound American high school students. Clubs hosting inbounds must appoint a youth exchange officer (YEO) and a youth exchange counselor (YEC) who must complete required youth protection training. Clubs sponsoring American students going abroad must appoint a YEC.

Critical need for blood and platelet donors

The American Red Cross currently has a critical need for blood donors of all blood types – especially type O – and platelet donors to make an appointment now to give and help replenish the blood supply after the holiday weeks. Right now, the Red Cross has less than a three-day supply of type O blood. To help tackle the critical need, the Red Cross and NFL are working together to offer one lucky winner a trip to Super Bowl LIV in Miami. During the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s, about 500 fewer blood drives were hosted by volunteer sponsor groups than required to meet patient needs. Many groups postpone blood drives during the winter holidays when travel and holiday activities may make it challenging for many donors to give. In fact, AAA estimated that a record 115.6 million Americans traveled during the holiday period of Dec. 21 through Jan. 1. “Lifesaving medical treatments and emergencies never take a holiday, said Paul Sullivan, senior vice president, Red Cross Biomedical S er vices. “Declines in donations can affect patient care. That’s why the Red Cross is encouraging eligible donors to make an appointment to give now and help those sidelined by illness and trauma. Donors are urged to make an appointment to give now using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood. org, calling 1-800-RED

CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device. As a special thank-you, those who come to give blood or platelets Jan. 1-19, 2020, will automatically be entered for a chance to experience the Super Bowl live. The Red Cross and NFL have teamed up to offer one winner two tickets to Super Bowl LIV, entry to the official NFL Tailgate, tickets to Super Bowl Experience at the Miami Beach Convention Center, round-trip airfare to Miami, three-night hotel accommodations at The AlexanderŽ - All Suite Oceanfront Resort (Jan. 31 to Feb. 3), and a $500 gift c ard for e x p e ns e s . * Additional details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/ SuperBowl. “The Red Cross appreciates the NFL’s support during this crucial time of year when every donation – and every donor – matters. We hope this may inspire some to make regular blood and platelet donation one of their New Year’s resolutions, said Sullivan. Upcoming blood donation opportunities are listed below. Clinton County: Jan. 20, 2 p.m. - 7 p.m., American Legion Hall, 105 East Illinois Street, New Baden. Jan. 21, 3 p.m. - 7 p.m., American Legion Hall, 391 Louis Street, Beckemeyer. Jan. 22, 1 p.m. - 6 p.m., Knights of Columbus, 480 North Walnut, Breese.

Girl Scout Cookie Program Underway

The Girl Scout Cookie Program in Southern Illinois will be taking orders now through January 26. In addition, cookie booths will be held February 21 through March 15. This month Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois and Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) launch the 2020 Girl Scout Cookie™ season. Girl Scouts across the United States become entrepreneurs as they earn money to power their own leadership opportunities and adventures. The Girl Scout Cookie Program® teaches girls about entrepreneurship as they have fun learning essential skills such as money management, public speaking, people skills and decision making, which set them up for a lifetime of success. Nine in ten Girl Scouts say the cookie program has built their entrepreneurship skills and their interest in pursuing entrepreneurship as a career path — so every cookie purchase is an investment in the worldchanging business leaders of tomorrow. What’s more, each and every purchase

stays local to power amazing experiences and leadership opportunities for girls in communities across the United States. The new Girl Scout Cookie is Lemon-Ups™ and it is a crispy lemon cookie baked with messages inspired by Girl Scout entrepreneurs. “I am a go-getter” and “I am an innovator” are among the eight phrases that bring the experience of Girl Scouting to life. The new cookie, available in select areas, joins the national 2020 lineup, which also includes favorites such as Thin Mints®, Samoas®, and Trefoils®. Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSofSI) kicked off the iconic Girl Scout C o ok ie Prog ram on January 4 with the first Girl S cout C ookie B ooth Weekend of the season. At these Cookie Booths, customers purchased cookies directly from troops who have set up shop at area establishments throughout Southern Illinois. From now until January 26, Girl Scouts will take orders for the treats, which will be delivered in early

May God bless and keep you and yours through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ of Nazareth. I’ve been following with great interest the ongoing impeachment hearings, etc. that have been dominating the media in all forms, especially on TV. Now that the “investigation” phase (if you can call it that) has concluded and is supposedly ready for the trial phase in the U.S. Senate, I wonder if all the senators of the upper house should be allowed to be involved in the senate trial. The Democrats are accusing President Trump of misusing his office to target a political opponent, in the form of asking the Ukrainian President to investi-

gate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter and their involvement in alledged corruption. If we are going to apply this premise then it MUST be applied across the board. Senators Warren (already caught in multiple lies), Booker, Klobuchar, Harris & Sanders must be omitted from the senate trial/vote as they cannot be allowed to participate as they are or have been President Trumps political opponents in the upcoming presidential race. Their unbiased status cannot be assured. By the same token Senators Schumer, Feinstein, Durbin, Hirono, Blumenthal (claimed to be a Vietnam Veteran and isn’t) and several other

March. In addition to cookie booths and traditional paper order cards, girls can sell Girl Scout Cookies online through a safe interactive platform called Digital Cookie. Now in its sixth record-breaking year, Digital Cookie combines traditional sales skills with modern technology to help girls learn more about online marketing and ecommerce. Girls can customize their personal sales website and then use e-mail to invite friends and family to purchase cookies from the comfort of their homes. Customer demand for Girl Scout Cookies following delivery has been high historically, so additional Cookie Booth Weekends will be held from late February through March. The Girl Scout Cookie Lineup in Southern Illinois is listed below. Thin Mints: Crisp wafers covered in chocolaty coating made with natural oil of peppermint. $5/box. Samoas: Cookies coated in caramel, with toasted coconut, and striped with dark chocolaty coating. $5/ box.

Ta g a l on g s : C r i s py cookies layered with peanut butter and covered with a chocolaty coating. $5/box. Trefoils: Delicate-tasting shortbread that is delightfully simple and satisfying. $5/box. Do-Si-Dos: Crunchy oatmeal sandwich cookies with creamy peanut butter filling. $5/box. New Cookie — Lemon Ups: In addition, meet Lemon-Ups™(replacing Savannah Smiles®), a crispy lemon cookie baked with messages inspired by Girl Scout entrepreneurs. $5/ box. Girl Scout S’mores: Crunchy graham cookies with creamy chocolate and marshmallow filling. $6/ box. Toffee-tastic: Rich, buttery cookies packed with golden toffee bits bursting with flavor. Gluten Free. $6/box. Girl Scout Cookies can only be purchased from a registered Girl Scout. To find Girl Scouts selling cookies in your area, please call 800-345-858 or use the official Girl Scout Cookie Finder app, free on iOS and Android devices.

Democrat senators have already been recorded in interviews stating that they absolutely believe President Trump to be guilty of the allegations posed and should be impeached and unfit to serve as POTUS. As the Senate Impeachment phase is an actual”trial” the rules of evidence, witness credibility, and neutrality must be adhered to. Any reasonable person with the slightest bit of inteligence can see this is a glowing “conflict of interest”. In a criminal or civil trial, jurors being considered would be dismissed or discredited from serving on the jury due to these obvious reasons ... the same should apply to these “Senatorial Jurors”. Now I’m quite sure all these in question will present a very polished/political contrary opinion, but 2 + 2 still and always will amount to 4. Of course all of this will be

moot if the Democrats do what they appear to be doing, my father had a descriptive quote that covers it: “Looks like someone’s crawdadding.” Maybe not, they might enjoy their own projectiles in their feet. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Events could inspire adventurous Lambs looking to make a major career or personal move. But as always, get all the facts before rushing into any sort of deal or commitment. Best to move carefully to avoid falling into unseen traps. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Need a holiday now that the seasonal festivities are behind you? Good idea. Plan to go someplace wonderful. Meanwhile, don’t assume a personal situation will work itself out. Best to get more involved earlier than later. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Catnaps are definitely recommended for Leos and Leonas who had been going at a hectic pace over the holidays. Adding relaxation time to your schedule helps restore your overdrawn energy reserves.
