Dan Laquet
Chairman of Balloon Fest 2016
Dear B allo on Fest Attendees, Welcome to Balloon Fest 2016! My name is Dan Laquet, and I am this year’s Balloon Fest Chairman. I have also served on the Chamber of Commerce board of directors for the past four years. My wife Vicki, children Adam and Sarah, and I moved to Centralia 28 years ago. I remember our family
attending the very first Balloon Fest shortly thereafter, and having a great time! Little did I know that I would be the chairman of this event so many years later with my grandchildren, Tristan and Savannah, helping out and enjoying the festivities! On behalf of the Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce, major sponsors, balloon sponsors, other sponsors and contributors, our entire steering committee, and the hundreds of community volunteers who have dedicated so much of their time and energy, I would like to personally welcome you to the 27th Anniversary of the Centralia Balloon Fest! It has been a great joy and blessing for me to work
Bob Kelsheimer
Executive Director of the Centralia Chamber of Commerce As Chamber of Commerce Director I want to welcome all of you to our 27th annual hot air balloon extravaganza, Balloon Fest! I can tell you this event is eagerly anticipated each year by thousands who not only live here but by out of town visitors who also make this an annual outing. Each year family reunions

with such an outstanding group of Centralia residents over the last three years. Our theme for this year’s event is “Let Your Spirit Soar.” Like the 40 magnificent balloons that will fill the skies over Centralia this weekend, I hope your spirits will be lifted up by participating in and enjoying the many activities offered during this fun-filled event! In addition to the regular balloon lineup, we will have some special shape balloons like the Purple People Eater, and the Haunted Mansion. (I’ve heard that it is quite spooktacular!) Be sure to attend the Balloon Glows Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm. It is one of the best photo opportunities of the weekend, and beautiful to watch! There will be many activities going on in the park all weekend. The children’s
area will have inflatable jumps, craft tables, face painting, games, puzzles and entertainment, plus the very popular CN Little Obie train and Wamac Little Toot will be providing train rides for young and old. We will have car shows on both Saturday and Sunday for all of the auto enthusiasts. If you enjoy crafts, then you won’t want to miss our large craft fair. It’s a great place to do some early Christmas shopping! If you don’t mind getting wet, the cardboard boat race is a really fun event for spectators and participants alike. Under the Family Picnic Tent there will be entertainment to enjoy throughout the weekend with a very nice seating area where you can enjoy tasting all of the great food from the many food vendors, or just sit back and relax.
We are extremely proud to have the United States Air Force Band of MidAmerica’s pop group, “Starlifter,” performing on our main stage Friday evening from 8:30 to 10 p.m. The Starlifters are a seven-piece group of talented Airman Musicians. The group performs music from virtually every genre: rock, pop, jazz, country, and patriotic songs. They perform the best in popular music from the 70’s to the most current sounds at the top of today’s music charts. Whether performing for a head of state, our troops at home or abroad, or before a capacity crowd at Balloon Fest, the Starlifters reflect the heritage and pride of our great nation and the United States Air Force. They will be immediately followed by a spectacular fireworks display.
We are pleased to present “Retro Boogie” on our main stage Saturday evening from 8:30 to 10 p.m. They play everything from way back when to top 40 hits including pop, rock, R&B, disco, and soul. This sixpiece high energy group will have you stomping your feet and grooving to the beat with the vocal talents of sisters Roz Moore and Bev Boyd. Your musical ride will be funky-fabulous, yet classy! Retro Boogie promises to deliver an enjoyable non-stop musical experience for all guests, young and old! I am looking forward to seeing all of you at Balloon Fest this weekend! Foundation Park is the perfect setting for this fabulous event!
are planned and vacations are centered around our event, and we have visitors from around the country and even international visitors come to enjoy Balloon Fest. Of course Balloon Fest isn’t just about balloons all though they are the stars of the show; there is much more to enjoy all weekend when the balloons are not being showcased. Our beautiful Foundation Park is the perfect setting for you to enjoy the extensive craft
show, our food row and the many children’s activities including train rides on CN’s Little Obie and the Wamac Little Toot train, all of which is free with paid admission. You won’t want to miss the car shows on Saturday and Sunday and the fun for all ages Cardboard Boat Races on Sunday at Catfish Pond. For those who enjoy live entertainment there will be almost nonstop music under the Family Picnic Tent and on Friday evening
on our main stage enjoy the ever popular Starlifter Air Force Band followed by our huge fireworks show. You won’t want to miss this: For the first time ever at Balloon Fest, the Retro Boogie Band from St. Louis will be playing your favorites from the 70’s, 80’s and more. Balloon Fest has something for everyone and is presented in a family friendly format. On behalf of the Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce and its Board of Directors and
staff I want to thank all of our sponsors and our 700 plus volunteers who make our event possible I hope you enjoy the weekend and plan to return each year!

U.S.A.F. Band of Mid-America
Starlifter
Friday, Aug. 19 • 8:30 p.m.–10:00 p.m. Main Stage The United States Air Force Band of Mid-America’s pop group, Starlifter, is a seven-piece group of talented Airman Musicians. The group performs virtually every musical idiom, from Rock and Pop to Jazz and Country, to great contemporary and traditional patriotic songs. Starlifter features the best in popular music from the 1970’s to the most current sounds at the top of today’s charts. Because of their unique
and diverse programs, the musicians of Starlifter are in great demand both at home and abroad. This group was an overwhelming success in a recent three month deployment to South West Asia in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and New Dawn. They visited six countries, entertaining and raising the morale of United States servicemen and women, coalition forces and civilians. Starlifter also went on a four
month humanitarian and civic assistance deployment to seven Central and South American and Caribbean countries. They performed for more than 34,000 people in over 90 performances. Starlifter is a component of the United States Air Force Band of Mid-America, the musical ambassador of the Air Mobility Command. Formerly known as the Air Force Band of Mid-America, the Military Airlift Command
Welcome to the 27th Annual
Balloon Fest!
Band, and the AMC Band of Mid-America, the United States Air Force band of Mid-America was established in 1942 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. In 1960, the band began working from its present home at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, as the principal representative of the Military Air Transport Service and the Military Airlift Command, both predecessors of Air Mobility Command. In any given year, the United States Air
Force Band of Mid-America and its component units perform more than 400 engagements for over one million people. Starlifter's musical versatility provides an exciting event for audiences overseas, our nation's top leaders, festivals, or enthusiastic crowds at a summer park concert. In the tradition of their namesake, the C-141 Starlifter transport jet, this combo's high-energy music transports its listeners to a higher plane.

The history of the Epics has its beginning with the original members being students at Centralia Township High School in the 1960s. At first, they just played for fun. Founding members Fred Smith and Steve Kinder played in a surf instrumental band, "The Continentals" along with drummer Pat Parker and Mike Garrison who had earlier been part of a vocal quartet. The combination of the two acts evolved into The Epics of the mid Sixties. In the early 2000s the band reformed and has

August LANDOWNER 19•20•21 AWARDS
Welcome to Balloon Fest 2016
Balloon Fest 2016 will award $100 Schnucks gift cards to five lucky landowners whose names are drawn at random at the conclusion of the Balloon Fest. Only landowners whose property is used for random landings by balloonists participating in Balloon Fest 2016 will be eligible. If you wish balloonists to land on your property, remember that a white sheet on your property is a universal welcome sign for balloonists. • Balloons usually fly in the early mornings and late afternoons, and seldom exceed a 10 – 12 mile radius of lift-off sites.
• Balloon flight patterns are controlled by wind directions. • Pilots look for open land or roads for landing sites, avoiding crop and livestock areas. • Spectators are urged to respect the rights of landowners when following balloons in flight and landing areas, and to avoid tying up traffic. We appreciate the enthusiasm area rural landowners have shown in the past and want to thank them again for their support. With continued support we can make Balloon Fest 2016 problem free, fun-filled, and entertaining for the entire family.
Schnuck's will provide five $100 gift cards for this year’s lucky winners.

Sunday, Aug. 21 • 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. Family Picnic Tent Dave Shake is better known by his fans as “Shakey Dave.” Though he has many interests, he says his first love is “entertaining folks like you with ‘Down Home’ Classic Country Music.” Through the use of modern electronics he performs as a solo act around the Southern Illinois communities across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri. His favorite songs are those recorded by folks like Jim Reeves, Eddy Arnold, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. He also likes current artists like George Strait and Alan Jackson and says old style country music is his real strength.
The first-born son of Ken and Doris Shake, Dave was born on August 18, 1944, in a small copper mining town called Ray, Arizona. His father was, at the time, on active duty with the Army Air Corps in New Caledonia, and his mother was residing with his paternal grandparents. Upon his father’s discharge from the AAF, Ken Shake moved the family to Prescott, AZ, known as the “Cowboy Capital of the World” and the home of the world’s first organized rodeo. Dave grew up steeped in western lore and country music. He lived in the place most folks only read about in western novels or see in the movies. He
says it was a magical beginning. After graduation from Prescott High School, Dave attended the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ for two years. He decided that working his way through college was too tough, so he quit school and got a job. He worked in several occupations ranging from the U.S. Forest Service to a Doodlebugging crew in seismic oil exploration until he got his notice to appear for the draft. In 1965 the country was really building up for the

Sunday, Aug. 21 • 3:30 p.m.–5:30 p.m. Family Picnic Tent DenMark is the stage name for a duet featuring Mark Vogel and Dennis Pracht. Both are long time local musicians playing and singing a variety of songs from the 60’s through
the 80’s. Mark (acoustic guitar) and Dennis (bass guitar) bring a spunky, yet easy listening style to favorites ranging from the Beatles and Doobie Brothers to country tunes by Willie Nelson
and the Bellamy Brothers. Whether you enjoy dancing or sitting back and listening, DenMark will provide you an enjoyable experience of music and fun.
Vietnam War. In September, 1965 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, beginning a very satisfying career that would last 30+ years and allow him to travel worldwide and experience cultures that many others may never see. He retired from the Air Force in October of 1995 as a Chief Master Sergeant. Dave still works for the Department of Defense as a civilian, and sings whenever the opportunity strikes.

Caring For You
Jamie Nattier
#1 Priority!
Country Music
Sunday, August 21 • 1:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Family Picnic Tent Jamie Nattier is a singer and song writer from Patoka, Illinois, where he was raised on the family farm. He's the son of a farmer and a teacher, and grew up surrounded by horses, cows, grain and oil fields. A solid family foundation gave him a strong work ethic, respect for the value of a good education and the confidence to pursue singing and songwriting, which is a huge part of Jamie's life. At the age of 12, Jamie's dad bought him a Fender starter guitar from a music store in nearby Centralia and he started to pick through songs, learning by ear. He took a few lessons over the years, and by the age of 15, he began going to a weekly local Opry-type show, practicing in-between. After a year, he got up on stage and played in some ensembles, watching and learning ... and getting better, and was now playing at 4-H and church events. Talented beyond his years, his playing and singing ability eventually got the attention of a local countryrock cover band which he now leads. Since 2005, Jamie's made dozens of radio station appearances and has a sizable fan base, both locally and online. Songwriting came into the mix in high school, around age 16. After tinker-

ing around with some melodies, Jamie began recording them into his home computer. Soon his original songs were playing on local radio stations. RockBand has licensed his song (cowritten with CJ Watson and Al Trolio), "If Trucks Drank Beer." Jamie now has more than 300 original songs in his catalog. Frequent trips to Nashville to attend workshops, co-write and to perform in public have turned Jamie into a seasoned writer and musician. You might find him at The Commodore, The Bluebird Cafe, The Cadillac Ranch, or Tootsie's, down on SoBro. He's also played The Nashville Palace, The Listening Room, Hotel Indigo, Richard's Cafe and the Scoreboard Bar & Grill, all popular hangouts for Nashville music folks. Jamie is a natural country singer, with a wide range,
smooth tone and just enough twang to keep it real. A few professional singing lessons from notable Nashville coaches have helped him with his phrasing and delivery, as well as stage performance. He's always striving to improve, and when he's not plowing fields or working the horses, he spends much of his spare time practicing. Jamie is also into movies, going out to eat and spending time with his family. Jamie tries to write something every day: a line, an idea, a title, a melody ... something, just to keep the muse nearby. He performs two or three times a week, on average. He'll go out as a solo act, or with his band. Right now, Jamie is focused on getting a hold, cut or label deal, and is busy writing and performing in southern Illinois and Nashville.
