Latchford’s Saw Celebrates 35 Years In Business

Pat Yohn Wins the “Count the Smiley Stars” Contest In December’s issue several of you counted the yellow smiley stars and the count was 180. Most of you got it right and I want to thank you for taking the time to count and submit your counts to us.

Pat Yohn was the lucky winner and she chose to get her $50 Gift Certificate from Ferster’s Meats in New Bloomfield. We are thinking of doing another contest in the near future so keep on reading and Thanks again for counting!!

Ken Latchford celebrates 35 Years in business this month. Congratulations to Ken and his son Keith, that is quite an accomplishment. Ken and his wife Bonnie started the business in 1980 by selling Poulan Chain Saws and yard equipment out of their garage. Ken worked during the day and Bonnie took in the work while he was at work and then he would work on it when he got home.

Ken worked 20 years at TRW building jet engines. When TRW burned down he started working at Western Auto working on saws and small engines. He started working on so many he decided there was a need for a Small engine repair shop and a need for chain saws and yard equipment in Perry County so he cashed in $1500 worth of bonds they had and started Latchford’s Saws.

Ken picked up Snapper’s Outdoor Equipment in 1981 and started working full time as his business continued to grow and people started bringing their repairs to him on a regular basis. In 1982 he became a Stihl distributor and and also became a Briggs & Stratton & Tecumseh, dealer and he hasn’t looked back. When asked what he enjoys about being in business he said he enjoys people coming in and the interesting conversations that they have together.

Latchford’s Saws continued to grow so Ken needed a bigger building so he bought the property on Old Route 22 on 2 Juniata Parkway West in Newport where Latchford’s Saw is today.

Keith, Ken’s son, joined the business in 1996 as the business got to be too much for just one person. They both keep busy with repairs and selling new chain saws and yard equipment. Every year new items are added to the inventory. They now carry a full line of Snapper Generators in various wattages. The benefit of buying your equipment from a local merchant is that when something goes wrong they can fix it, Latchford’s Saw services what they sell and they do it quickly and efficiently.. They also sharpen chains for chain saws and have all the oils, and other accessories one needs to run their equipment safely and efficiently.

While I was doing this interview a customer came in and explained to Ken what he needed and Ken figured out what he needed within a few minutes. Year’s of experience is something you can’t get in the huge chain stores. Latchford’s Saw is open Tuesday through Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 2pm. To celebrate Ken and Keith are giving away various little gifts stop in and get yours and tell them congratulations!
