ow, after such a cool summer, I can’t quite believe we are back in September and the return to school and normality once again! After the cool holidays, it’s time to settle down!

A

s hard as it is to believe, the summer holidays have passed us by and the new school year is upon us, so now’s the perfect time to make some ‘NEW School Year’s Resolutions’.

Here are some ideas for you for when you head back to school this September, so that you can start the year as you mean to go on! Here are my top eight tips: 1. Get up earlier!

This could prove challenging after weeks of lazing around in your PJ’s until lunchtime!

(Yep definitely me)! Do you ever have that feeling that you wish there were more hours in the day? Well actually there are but you probably spend them sleeping until the last possible moment before you have to get up to go to school! Set your alarm, get up earlier, give yourself plenty of time to eat a healthy breakfast, do your hair, plan what you need to get done and what the day ahead holds. I know this may seem difficult, but it will be worth it, because you will have a much more productive day…and a better night’s sleep!

2. Use your Lunch breaks.

Rather than having your entire lunch break off, give yourself twenty minutes to eat and chat with friends before heading to the library

to do some reading or make a start on a piece of homework (I do this a lot, and you don’t have to do homework at home!)

3. Revise!!!

Since I’m heading into year 9, this is a key step for me. Make sure you revise each topic, even if it’s only an hour a day.

Each time you finish a subject move on to the next one, test yourself on what you’ve learned up to this point.

Re-read your notes so that they stay fresh, try jotting down notes on each subject from memory to see how much you remember. You’ll be smiling when exam time comes round and you remember most of what you’ve learned. A huge tip when it comes to revising is chew a flavoured gum, chew the same gum in the exam. It helps boost your brain and even if it doesn’t work at least it’s giving you your confidence!

4. Set aside an hour or two a week for extra reading...

Reading helps with every subject, especially English!

So why not add a few hours to reading each week, and I don’t mean reading on your phone!

I mean reading from a book.

I’m telling you now that you will benefit from this, so sink your teeth into a horror book or a fantasy and make the world whatever you want it to be! It will also boost your awareness around you & most likely make you happy!

5. Ban distractions!

Admit it we’ve all done it. We’ve gone up to our room pulled out our homework and put the pen to the paper and we got bored!

So we allowed ourselves a little break on our phones. Two hours later, we are still on our phones and the homework is still incomplete. Yep that’s right I’m sorry to break it to you, but there is no homework fairy! You need to get your lazy-self off your butt and do it yourself! So my tip is to get a white board and draw out a table with revision times. On the bottom stick sticky notes with rewards. For example after you’ve finished revising for an hour, you're allowed half an hour free time.

Or twenty minutes on your phone. It’s so easy and simple!

6. Take up a new hobby...

Hobbies aren’t just fun, they help you develop new life skills, and you can talk about them on your University Application. So, this school year, why not take up a new hobby? You could start learning a musical instrument, take up drama, audition for a part in the school play, or join one of the school sports teams. Just doing simple things like this can give you skills such as teamwork, good communication, self-discipline and so on. These are all skills that will stand you in good stead for University and the workplace, and you’ll have fun learning them too!

7. Pack healthier lunches!

You may already be eating very healthily, in which case well done! But if you’re not, the new school year is a great opportunity to change your eating habits for the better. Preparing your own lunch means you’re more likely to eat healthily, so buy a nice lunchbox that you enjoy using, and make your lunch the night before. Swap fizzy drinks for fruit juice, and for snacks, try a box of raisins or fruit slices. You’d be amazed at how much better and more alert you’ll feel if you improve your diet, and this will have a direct impact on your studies. This can be hard especially if you a chocoholic!

8. Go to bed at the same time every night...

Staying up too late will have a negative impact on your day and your ability to learn, so try to get into the habit of going to bed at a set time each night.

Try to get eight hours sleep a night, so that you’re properly rested and ready to approach the day with enthusiasm, rather than yawning your way through your lessons! Before bed, try to switch off your mobile phone, laptop or tablet, as the glare from the screen last thing at night can make it harder to get to sleep. If you get plenty of sleep each night, you’ll feel much better able to cope with the demands of a day at school, and you’ll come across as a more positive person.

W

ell let’s start by saying I need to tidy my room, it’s a mess! And I am loving my makeup! But the exciting thing is that mum and dad have given me my own work desk in the office, so I’m going to make it look pretty cool, since it’s a plain wooden desk with a laptop on! I want to make it mine, so I’m going to do that in a minute with my little sister! I’m crazy about DIY at the moment as well. Maybe that’s why my room is so messy? So making this desk cool is going to be epic!!!

Over the summer we have had a fantastic time. We have been camping a few times with friends and had epic fun! We have also being to Tenerife for almost 3-weeks of the holidays, which was AWESOME! Dad’s being making pizzas in his pizza oven as well and I most say they taste AMAZING! So all in all I have had a brilliant Summer.

Oh, almost forgot, I discovered a cool band ‘Paramore’ they’re AWESOME, check out their single ‘Monster’ on Youtube it rocks!

Of course I’ve also being on Simms! I love the Sims! I experienced my first death of my first ever Sim and I was practically screaming at the Grim Reaper through my computer screen! Well that’s all for this month. Until next month take care and be cool!

Whoof! Hello my human servants. I hope you have enjoyed the summertime and are now ready for the Autumn. I know I can’t wait to play with all the apples in my garden! YUMMY!

his past month, I’ve been on my holidays, as my human servants have been off on an aeroplane to somewhere or other! I’ve had a great time on the farm where I love to stay, but now I’m back home and back to my normal surroundings, I’m going to make my humans pay for leaving me behind!

You see, I’ve heard my young human ‘Millie’ talking about ‘life lessons’ and it got me thinking about life lessons for dogs, so this month I thought I’d experiment with them - on you!

2. Be Direct with Humans...

So here’s 5 brief life lessons given from an alpha male dog to you human servants:

Firstly, leg it! hopefully you’ll be quick enough to escape? However once you are dragged shamefully out from under the bed, remember to kiss your human with a real kiss - Top Tip: If it’s not wet and sloppy it’s not a real kiss!

1. If you stare at something long enough, eventually you will get what you want...

I love the sound of this one as it’s true and also a great wind up for your human! Sometimes I lose my toy in one of my many moments of craziness. So I have a sniff around firstly and then trick my human into getting down on all fours and looking under the sofa for the toy! The trick is in the title of this bullet point. Sit a stare at your human, to get their attention, give a bark or two. Once you have gained their attention, lead them to the sofa and again bark whilst looking to the carpet. Your daft human will be on their hands and knees before you know it, looking under the sofa for the lost toy!

LOL a great wind up!

It’s time to share the humour by being direct in your endeavour.

As an example let them know how you feel about things. You can do this by peeing in their shoes!

5. Always give a friendly greeting...

A cold nose in the crotch is most effective!

3. When you do something wrong, take full responsibility!

4. Honesty is the best policy!

If you need to flatulate, try smiling that beautiful little smile of yours whilst farting! If your face is smiling sufficiently, you’ll get away with it!

Alternatively take the easy and ever so lazy route and pretend you're a sleep!

Dog Humour: My cat friend ‘Helmsley’ told me this hilarious joke the other day...

Three handsome male dogs are parading down the street when they see a beautiful, enticing, female Poodle. The three male dogs fall all over themselves in an effort to be the one to reach her first, but end up arriving in front of her at the same time. The males are speechless before her beauty, slobbering on themselves and hoping for just a glance from her in return.

Aware of her charms and her obvious effect on the three suitors, she decides to be kind and tells them, “The first one who can use the words “liver” and “cheese” together in an imaginative, intelligent sentence can go out with me.”

The sturdy, muscular black Labrador speaks up quickly and says “I love liver and cheese.”

“Oh, how childish,” says the Poodle.

“That shows no imagination or intelligence whatsoever.”

She turns to the tall, shiny Golden Retriever and says, “How well can you do?”

“Um. I HATE liver and cheese,” blurts the Golden Retriever.

“My, my,” says the Poodle.

“I guess it’s hopeless.

That's just as dumb as the Labradors sentence.”

She then turns to the last of the three dogs and says, “How about you, little guy?”

The last of the three, tiny in stature but big in fame and finesse, is the Taco Bell Chihuahua. He gives her a smile, a sly wink, turns to the Golden Retriever and the Labrador and says, “Liver alone. Cheese mine!”

Border Collie: “Just one. And then I’ll replace any

wiring that's not up to code.”

Golden Retriever: “The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned-out light bulb?”

Rottweiler: “Make me!”

Shi-tzu: “Puh-leeze, dah-ling. Let the servants. . . .”

Jack Russell Terrier: “I’ll just pop it in while I’m bouncing off the walls and furniture.”

Irish Wolfhound: “Can somebody else do it? I've got this hangover….”

Pointer: “I see it, there it is, there it is, right there……”

Old English Sheep Dog: “Light bulb? That thing I just ate was a light bulb?”

Westie: “Dogs do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs, I am not one of THEM, so the question is, how long will it be before I can expect my light?”

INDIAN SUMMER? The Met Office Meteorological Glossary, first published in 1916, defines an Indian summer as ‘a warm, calm spell of weather occurring in autumn, especially in October and November.’

While the definition of an Indian summer seems quite straightforward, the origins of the phrase are a little hazy...

Y

ou could be forgiven for thinking that it comes from British colonial rule in India.

But the more likely explanation is that it was first coined along the American east coast where warm weather in autumn is not uncommon. One theory even goes as far as to credit it to Native Americans - ‘American Indians’ - who are said to have taken advantage of mild autumnal weather to hunt and forage later in the day to build up winter food stocks.

Meaning An unseasonably warm, dry and calm weather, usually following a period of colder weather or frost in the late Autumn (or in the Southern hemisphere, where the term is less common, the late Spring).

Origin The origin of other 'Indian' phrases, like Indian giver, Indian sign, are well-known as referring to North American Indians - who prefer to be called Native Americans or, in Canada, First Nations. The term Indian summer reached England in the 19th century, during the heyday of the British Raj in India. This led to the mistaken belief that the term referred to the Indian subcontinent. In fact, the Indians in question were the Native Americans, and the term began use there in the late 18th century.

Indian summer is first recorded in Letters From an American Farmer, a 1778 work by the French-American soldier turned farmer J. H. St. John de Crèvecoeur (a.k.a. Michel-GuillaumeJean de Crèvecoeur): "Then a severe frost succeeds

which prepares it to receive the voluminous coat of snow which is soon to follow; though it is often preceded by a short interval of smoke and mildness, called the Indian Summer."

There are many references to the term in American literature in the following hundred years or so. In the 1830s Indian summer began to be used figuratively, to refer to any late flowering following a period of decline. It was well enough established as a phrase by 1834 for John Greenleaf Whittier to use the term that way, when in his poem Memories he wrote of "The Indian Summer of the heart!".

Thomas De Quincey, republished in Bentley's Works of Thomas De Quincey, 1855, wrote: "An Indian summer crept

stealthily over his closing days."

In his story The Guardian Angel, 1867, Oliver Wendell Holmes mentions "an Indian summer of

serene widowhood".

he English already had names for the phenomenon St. Luke’s Summer, St. Martin’s Summer or All-Hallown Summer, but these have now all but disappeared and, like the rest of the world, the term ‘Indian summer’ has been used in the UK for at least a century.

Why Indian? Well, no one really knows but, as is commonplace when no one knows, many people have guessed! Here are a few of the more commonly repeated guesses:

The haziness of the Indian Summer weather was caused by prairie fires deliberately set

by Native American tribes.

It was the period when First Nations/Native American peoples harvested their crops.

The phenomenon was more common in what were then North American Indian territories.

ell lovelies I hope you enjoyed a fabulous summer and that you feel as excited about the Autumn as you did the summer! It’s September and a fantastic month of changing seasons awaits!

ell lovelies, with it being Autumn, this month I have researched a little about the myths and legends associated with Autumn. I was both amazed and inspired that the legends go back to before the Pharaohs developed the great Egyptian civilisation!

Legend says that there were four Gods on planet Earth.

Each one was different.

‘Spring’ was the youngest of the four and it is said his touch gave everything about him light and joy. Next came ‘Summer’, he was the fierce one, his colour was bright red which represented fire and heat and as he walked everything in his path heated up.

Next came ‘Autumn’, he was the calm one, calming everything down after the heat of summer. His colours were brown and the colours of peace, and like a mother, Autumn would put the world to sleep and give the feeling of safety. Finally there was ‘Winter’ the cold blooded one, his colours were pale blue and white and he gave way to snow and ice!

Autumn is a beautiful season and September is one of my favourite months.

I always love to watch the trees changing their colours from green to gold then finally brown. As a child I loved to walk through the fallen leaves and listen to them rustling under my feet.

eptember marks my 70th birthday. My lovely son Jason is taking me away for the occasion and we are planning a family get together! I’m looking forward to seeing my extended family and spending some quality time with them all. I think as we all get older it's much more important to make time for our loved ones. I remember the times I spent with my parents and grandparents, they were very special to me and my lovely sister Linda.

I am lucky to have lots of photographs of those times which I really treasure and if I am ever feeling a bit low I take a few moments to look at those photos or spend a few moments thinking about those happy times.

he birthstone for this month is the Sapphire and this stone has been popular since the Middle Ages. It is said to bring calmness and healing tendencies and is also linked with the Zodiac sign of Virgo, which represents truth, consistency, insight and interpretation.

According to folklore the Sapphire would protect your loved ones from envy and harm. The medieval clergymen wore Sapphire to symbolise Heaven, whilst commoners thought this stone attracted heavenly blessings.

It also provided protection to travellers! Goodness my lovelies, I am really blessed to have this as my birthstone!

16 Small new potatoes 3 Oranges segmented and juice reserved 3 Lemons segmented and juice reserved 125 ml Olive Oil 4 Salmon fillets 4 tablespoons fresh Coriander chopped Rocket Leaves.

Method:

Boil the potatoes in salted water for around 12/15 mins until just tender.

Drain and allow to cool then slice.

Season and then drizzle over a little of the olive oil.

Place the Orange and Lemon segments in a separate bowl.

Add 100 ml of the olive oil to the juices of the oranges and lemons and whisk together to combine. Season to taste.

Heat a non-stick frying pan and add the remaining olive oil.

Season the Salmon fillets and add to the pan and cook for 3/4 mins until seared and slightly golden. Turn over and cook for another minute until just tender. Transfer to a plate & keep warm.

Tip the Orange and Lemon segments into the dressing then add the Coriander and Rocket leaves.

Toss to combine.

ell my lovely son Jason and his family have all become keen campers over the summer. They have had a few nice weekends away with friends and completely embraced the camping lifestyle.

I have been invited to join them in their joys of camping but have decided that I really am too old to be sleeping on a blow up bed in a tent!

Don't get me wrong as a young parent I loved taking the children caravaning and they loved it too, but now I much prefer my comfy bed or a nice B&B with ensuite of course! It’s okay being at one with nature, which I still love to do, but these days I enjoy it in comfort with a nice cup of tea in my hand, or a nice glass of chilled white wine!

his month lovelies I am finally having my foot operation. I’ve been waiting for months for my operation and it’s finally happening!

After I will be in plaster for my birthday, but never mind, I will put my feet up and be treated like a queen! I plan to spend the time I have in plaster to do lots of reading and catching up with my friends via the phone, I am also going to put together my favourite recipes and turn them into a Nana's cookery book so watch this space lovelies!!

o lovelies, as we embrace the Autumn there’s still lots of time to get together with friends and family. It’s harvest and that means lots of fruits and treats all fresh and ready to eat. I think this year we may make our own cider with our apples. We have 4 apple trees in the garden and this year they are laden with fruit. It’s a good excuse to invite friends and family to join us in the Autumn sunshine for a BBQ or a Pizza!

The thought of a little cider tasting is sure to have everyone in the mood for a little late sunshine partying and with good friends, great food and some sunshine music, life is a fantastic place!

Work, friends, family. How does anyone find time to exercise? You know you should, but getting motivated can be a problem. However, it's important to find some way to incorporate activity into your busy lifestyle. So here are some easy ways to getting started...

Benefits of Exercise

Strength Training

Researchers have found that moderate daily exercise may reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis and other chronic diseases. If you are seeking general health improvement, just 30 minutes a day should do the trick. This thirty minutes can be broken down into 10 minute segments throughout the day.

If you are looking for strength training, you should work each major muscle two to three times per week. Perform at least one set with 8-12 repetitions. Before exercising, stretch each muscle group (those that will be used in the activity) for 8-12 seconds.

This will help to increase flexibility. You should feel some slight discomfort (not pain) while stretching.

Moderate Exercise Even exercising just three times per week (if you can't do it daily) can have benefits (mental and physical). The key is that the exercise is "moderate". Moderate exercise consists of any activity that causes an increase in breathing, forcing you to take deeper breaths. You should be able to carry on a light conversation, but should not be breathless.

Set Your Goal To help get you started, decide on a goal and make a workout plan designed to meet this goal.

Once you decide upon a plan, remember to keep a log. This keeps you motivated and "on track".

Keeping Motivated Becoming and staying fit is a lifelong process, so don't become discouraged. Small steps, each day is the key. Also, keep these tips in mind:

Plan for bad weather. Have an alternative to your usual outdoor activity.

Work out at different times of the day, and then write down how you feel before and after each work out. Discover the best time of day to work out.

Combine housework with more strenuous activity. For example, shuffle, squat, jog or dance while cleaning up.

Make exercise a priority.

Park in the furthest corner of the car park instead of the closest you can find.

Take the stairs rather than the lift.

Have a walk after lunch or dinner.

Getting the right conditions and weather for hot air balloon flights...

T

he position of the British Isles on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean has meant that traditionally we have low pressure weather systems in the winter and more high pressure systems in the summer. The high pressure weather will generally give us blue skies, light winds and little rain. The low pressure systems often have storms, rain and strong winds associated with them. So the hot air balloon rides season runs from April to October with the most popular months (weather condition-wise) being September & October.

Hot air balloon flights rely on the wind being light for the first few hours after dawn and to decrease before dusk. Both of these situations can provide the opportunity for an enjoyable and safe balloon flight. For a safe balloon flight surface winds must be less than 10 miles an hour during the hour after dawn or before dusk.

Of course passengers know well before what the forecasts are and rely on this information to be able to make the decision to call the flight on.

Predicting the visibility...

This can be more of an issue for balloon flights in Spring and Autumn when conditions are generally cooler and there is more moisture in the air because of recent rain. These conditions can give rise to mist, fog or ultimately low cloud. It is more of an issue in the morning, but equally a little mist on the surface can give rise to a magical effect for the first part of an early morning balloon flight before the sun's heat burns it off. Visibility can be very difficult to predict and is probably the most commonly occurring error in weather forecasts. The different conditions to form mist, fog or low cloud are so subtle that they can vary within a few miles, with a low lying valley area for example being fogged in and a neighbouring area of elevated land being as clear as a bell.

If visibility issues are relevant to the forecast, the balloon pilot will want to access the most up to date information and may also rely on local knowledge.

Sometimes a forecast of a misty morning with low cloud will be based on the expectation that there will be some overnight rain.

Depending on where the rain falls will dictate which areas have excessive moisture in the air to form low lying cloud which would make a balloon flight unsafe and not very enjoyable. Equally contrary to expectations, in the summer after two or three days of a high pressure system staying right over the centre of the country, the light winds and no rain result in atmospheric pollution with very fine particles which create hazy conditions which get worse the higher you go.

What is the best month for balloon flights?

There is no longer a simple answer to this question. Ten years ago it would have been fair to say that July, August and September had some of the best weather for ballooning. In the past 5 years weather conditions have been generally poorer in the summer months and much better in April and often good in September and October. Of course next year could turn that all around!
