10 Tips To Make it Memorable This Year! Valentine's Day is the perfect opportunity to make the effort and put some real spring back in your life! This year follow our quick guide to the perfect evening of meaningful celebration of your love to the one person who means the world to you...

1. Try making your own chocolate truffles.

All you need is just three ingredients: dark chocolate, double cream and light muscovado sugar – although you can add flavourings such as chilli, rum, brandy or mint if you are feeling rather more adventurous. You will also need some cocoa powder and/or crushed nuts in which to roll the balls in. But it's pretty easy and totally cool! Check out YouTube!

2. Make your own card!

Of course many of us prefer simply to send a card, but don't use a free e-card website – that's just so naff! It's much better to make your own card – you could personalise it with pictures of the recipient and their favourite things (although your boyfriend or girlfriend with their mates on a night out is perhaps not the most romantic idea!)

3. Cook a meal!

Instead of battling to get a place in your local on 14 February and spending the evening surrounded by smoochy couples, cook a special meal at home. Look up some simple recipes, or if that is beyond your culinary skills, nip to your local supermarket for the Dine in for Two deal.

6

Don't forget to dress the table – a flower in a glass and perhaps a candle or two should do the trick. Remember that while candlelight is romantic, you do actually need to be able to see the food and your partner, so make sure there is additional ambient lighting!

4. Go out for a slap up romantic evening. If the idea of being romantic for a whole evening with your partner sends you into a flat spin of terror, maybe going out to a local pub or a restaurant is a better option. There’s loads of great places to eat locally and it’s very affordable! If you’re on a budget then check out discount voucher sites, for restaurants offering money off. However, there are perhaps better venues than Pizza Express and Gourmet Burger to take your partner on the evening of romance..

5. Gifts...

If you are after a present for your loved one. Then locally there’s a good scope of inspiration. Check out your local High Street to see what’s on offer. Locally you can source some brilliant gifts that don’t cost the Earth and you’re also be helping support our many local businesses along the way. A perfect feel good factor!

6. Personalise gift ideas.

What better way to show how much you care than to surprise the love of your life with a great personal gift. You could make a photographic collection of your favourite moments together. Either use prints you already have to create an album, or if your pics are stored on your computer, create a photo book. Check out Photobox.co.uk and loads of others online who can all create wonderful photo albums of your precious moments. You also still have time to order a personalised mug or T-shirt for less than a tenner!

7. Music is love for the soul...

Do you remember making cassettes of your favourite songs when you were a teenager (or CDs if you are a bit younger than me)? These days you can compile a playlist for your partner's iPod or mobile – Take some ‘alone’ time to listen out for some tunes that have a definite meaning to your loved one. Tunes to avoid include just about everything suggested on the "classics" shelf!

8. You can't beat a good massage!

Feet, head, back, hands. Invest in a nice-smelling massage oil – there's loads to choose from and they aren't expensive. Learn the best techniques from the YouTube or visit Howtomassage.com and get stuck in!

9. Surprise, Surprise!

You could surprise the one you love with a small token of your love that is sure to bring a big smile to their face! Here’s a few examples: Hide little heart candies in your spouse’s shoes, coat, or car, etc. On individual note cards, write why you love your spouse and then insert these cards in a small photo album. After your spouse goes to bed, tape notes to his/her car’s steering wheel with reasons that you love them, or decorate the bathroom mirror with lipstick kisses or Valentine’s window clings! Get creative and you will bring the spring back in to your love life!

Real Ales - Traditional Food - Friendly Atmosphere

FOOD NOW AVAILABLE ALL DAY - EVERYDAY Monday - Friday 10am - 8.30pm Saturday 9am - 8.30pm & Sunday 12pm - 5pm

10. You could surprise your lover by...

Taking the day off from work and enjoying Valentine’s Day at home. You could enjoy a relaxing morning together, take a walk in the country, enjoy a coffee and then go to a favourite café for lunch. You could watch a DVD or visit Cineworld. You could pack a picnic and enjoy a romantic lunch somewhere special. You could reserve a spa treatment and tanning session for your partner. Whilst they are relaxing at the spa, you could nip home and make a special dinner for 2!

Finally... You don't just have to celebrate on 14 February. There is no rea-

son why you should fit in with what is now simply an opportunity for retailers to market overpriced and usually naff cards and trinkets. Try being nice and considerate all year round instead and your love will blossom! Have fun on February 14, and remember: Love is not meant to be given and received on just Valentine’s Day. Instead, it’s to be practiced every single day of the entire year.

D

id you know that we furry friends have a sixth sense when it comes to understanding human emotional needs? When you are feeling down, we can often act as a better confidant than another human. We also listen better, respond appropriately to your emotions, and seem to genuinely care about your feelings.

I

t should come as no surprise that pooches are capable of intense feelings. We are highly social, pack animals with strong emotional connections to other dogs. Of course, there are many other fascinating things that we four legged friends understand about you humans that you may not be aware of So here is a look at 5 things your pooch can sense about you along with some insight into how dogs do these things and what it all means.

2. Dogs can sense your intentions

3. We know when you feel scared!

You humans will all have experienced a dog’s almost psychic ability to sense when something unpleasant is about to take place.

When you feel scared, we know about it in an instant. Our sensitive nose can pick up on subtle scents, such as adrenalin, fear and danger. If you have a Rottweiler or Doberman, then your burly protector will most likely spring into action and come to your rescue.

Even before you turn on the shower or touch our dog towel, we know you intend to give us a bath! That’s why we immediately run for cover! The same goes for haircuts, nail trims and administering medicine. On the positive side, we furry friends understand if your intentions are pure and that you are performing the task for our own good.

Just as a mentalist we will follow your gaze to determine what is on your mind that you don’t want us to

12

Your dog will always look to you for guidance on how to react in certain situations, so if you want your dog to be brave you will have to lead by example. Fear is an emotion shared by a large number of animals, dogs included. While it is true that dogs can “smell” fear, it is also true that they intuitively understand the body language associated with it.

1. Dogs Know When You Are Sad When you feel sad, we feel sad too! Your four legged friend will immediately pick up on your mood and adjust their behaviour accordingly. Usually, us four legged companions will quietly observe you from a corner of the room. After a while, we may come over and lie down at your feet or gently rest our head in your lap. Many dogs will even try to lick away tears as they fall. You see the truth is that a dog’s master is the centre of his/her entire world, so sensing human feelings of sadness will definitely have an effect on your four legged friend!

Smaller dogs, or those with nervous temperaments, will follow your lead and start to feel scared themselves.

You see we four legged friends use eye contact and gaze to figure out what you human folk are thinking.

Dogs, like humans, have a customary reaction to fear. Their hair stands up, their pupils dilate, their lips curl, and their stance changes. When they associate their fear posturing with human fear posturing, they gain an understanding of what humans look like when they are afraid. Combine this with their awesome sense of smell and it’s no wonder that dogs can so easily detect fear.

4. We know if you are a generous person or not! Just as you humans judge other people based on their actions, we dogs will also pay attention to how you act toward others. An experiment organised by the University of Milan allowed dogs to observe humans in social situations. The dogs watched one set of actors sharing their food with a homeless man and another group telling the man to leave in an aggressive manner. Afterward, the two sets of actors attempted to call the dogs at the same time. Almost all of the dogs would respond to the generous actors when called and avoided the aggressive group. Generosity is about justice as much as it is about kindness. It is also about tone of voice, anger, and all of the things previously discussed. The bottom line is that your dog knows when you are being generous and when you are being stingy. So if you are stingy too often, your four legged friend may begin to take things behind your back, act out, or otherwise let you know they are disappointed. Dogs expect reciprocity, they expect kindness, and they expect fairness. Dogs have a strong moral compass, which is what makes them such outstanding companions. They expect you to live a moral life and will react accordingly. 5. We know if you’re a pushover! Some of the more energetic breeds of dog, such as Labradors and Pit bulls, require a firm disciplinarian to reign in their wild behaviour.

MARKET STREET, CLAY CROSS Is the ideal venue for

Birthday Parties, Anniversaries, Engagement Parties, Public Meetings, Wedding Receptions, Community Events & much more...

“Twice we have hired the hall , first time for our wedding reception and the second time for my daughters 21st birthday. The staff are friendly and helpful, there’s plenty of space , can't fault it at all. Will continue to hire if needed again.” Lisa Clay Cross Social Centre has one of the finest dance floors in the area. It is spacious and comfortable, with a furnished lounge area adjacent to the bar and a fully equipped kitchen. In good weather there is an outdoor seating area & during the evening & weekends a large car park. You can hire the Main Hall from just £10 per hour including the bar, which is managed on behalf of the Parish Council by Charlie's Bar and offers competitive prices.

Larger breeds sometimes don’t understand their own strength and can be dangerous if they suddenly decide to surprise a child or an old person with a hug. However, just because a dog is well-behaved for its master or trainer does not mean it will act the same way for everyone else. Dogs like to test the boundaries on a regular basis. If they find someone who does not punish them for pulling on the leash, digging up the garden, or eating the garbage, they will take advantage of their new-found freedom! We dogs rely heavily on social hierarchies to determine what we are and are not allowed to do in a setting. If you want your furry friend to behave, then he or she needs to see you as the alpha in the relationship. To maintain alpha status, you need to do what an alpha dog would do. That means making your dog heel on walks, going through doorways first, always eating first, never feeding the dog from the table, and sticking to your punishments when the dog has misbehaved. If you maintain alpha status, your dog will never think you are a pushover. Until next month...WHOOF!

Blame it on marketing, or the chocolate industry, or Hallmark, or Cupid. We all want to feel loved and cared for and needed. That’s why women love Valentines Day...

Y

es it is true and that’s the reason, and as crazy as you might think it is, every woman, regardless of her level of independence and shunning of gender norms, wants. it. If you’re dating someone, this doesn’t mean a truck full of chocolate roses and sprinkles and surprises, but just do something little for your lady. It doesn’t have to be expensive, or over the top, or like popping out of a limo with a rose in your teeth! Valentine’s is about showing the one you love and care about, just that! As ridiculously and maybe cheesy as some may see Valentine's Day, you should look at it from your own perspective. It’s a fun, celebratory day to celebrate all of the love in your life, not just in your dating life. Women say that most men don’t know how to express love. Those women should definitely pass a glance to this fact. It is statistically proven that men spend more than double of what women spend on Valentine’s Day gifts. Maybe men are the most generous givers of the gifts, but they don’t like being at the receiving end of the same. It is proven in a survey that most of the men do not like being gifted with goodies in return.

Love is not just about a boy and a girl, is it? It can be between anyone. A mum and a son, a teacher and a student and a man and his pet. Valentine’s Day proves the same. Every year many gifts are purchased for mothers, teachers, and pets as well on this occasion. Why do chocolates and Valentine’s Day gifts sound so synonymous? Yeah… I agree there could be no best gift than chocolates to express love, but who started it? It’s none other than “Cadbury” himself. The founder of the Cadbury Company, Richard Cadbury, gifted his loved one, a heart-shaped chocolate box and thus started the tradition of gifting chocolate. It’s not just chocolates, but phones too. There is an undeniable bond between love and phones. How do you think all the long distance relationships survive if not for them? Hence we can’t deny the love between love and telephones. Maybe Alexander Graham Bell envisioned this ages ago. That’s why he petitioned for a patent on the telephone on Valentine’s Day in 1876. Yes that's a true fact!

So what about gift ideas for the big day then? Here are 10 quick, simple and inexpensive ideas to help capture your creative imagination.

Ten Simple Gift Ideas February 14 is fast approaching, which means that with a little thought you can get excited for Valentine’s Day. Now, I know a few of you are probably out there groaning over my enthusiasm for what many see as a fake celebration designed completely around commercialism, but I’m here to tell you that you have been misled! Sure, Valentine’s Day - like any celebration - can be totally route and predictable and commercial but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, it can be the best day of your winter, if you let it be. So here are some simple gift ideas for your girlfriend that you will not go wrong with!…

1: Roses

Roses are a time-honoured Valentine’s tradition. Be warned though, lots of places sell out on Valentine’s Day, so make sure you don’t leave it to the last minute!

2: Chocolates

Hey everyone loves chocolates, well most people! Just make sure she isn’t dairy intolerant! If she is no, problem get dairy free chocolates! Or get her something else.

3: A teddy bear

This is a super cute idea, she will love it. Unless you break her heart afterwards she may use it as a punching bag, just kidding!

4: Jewellery

It doesn’t have to be diamonds! Girls do love Jewellery and something simple like a locket or a bracelet ticks the box!

5: Perfume

Every girl loves perfume! You really can’t go wrong with perfume, just make sure you get a nice one!

6: Body care

Get her some nice soap or body butter. Girls love to pamper and this is a sure successful gift!

7: Books

Find out what she’s into. Horror? Mysteries? She’ll love a good book to get into.

8: Music

Has she been craving a new album? Or the latest song? Get her itunes money or a new album she’s been buzzing about!

9: A card

Don’t... I repeat DO NOT get her a cheap card! Get her a big card saying I love you or make her a cute card. Take your time on it though…

10: Cute candy

If you have a crush on a special someone give them some adorable candy. I would recommend love hearts since them come with little messages on them such as “Be Mine” and “Text me”.

KNOWS BEST!

W

ell hello my lovelies. Here we are in February the month of love and desire and this month I want to share with you the origins of Valentines Day.

I

hope that this month finds you fit and healthy. No doubt like most of us, you will have kicked off the year with a few changes and maybe have started a fitness program or a new diet to get you all slim and gorgeous for Valentine's Day! For my column this month, I was amazed to read how differently Valentines is celebrated around the world, so lovelies here are just a few facts that I found out.

T

he Chinese celebrate western Valentine's Day pretty much the same way as we do, with the exchange of romantic gifts. However in China they actually have had their own (day of love) and have done traditionally, for many centuries. This is celebrated on the seventh day of August where tradition recalls an old ancestral story that has been passed down from generation to generation. The story is of the love tragedy of two stars in the Milky Way. A fairy named ‘Zhina’ married a mortal young man named ‘Niulang’. According to the legend, they fell in love at first sight and when they married the Goddess of Heaven became so furious that she created the Milky Way just to separate them!

26

As you look at the Milky Way, on the east side lies the star ‘Vega’ which represents ‘Zhina’ and on the west side is the young ‘Niulang’ crying for his wife. Legends tells us that the lovers get to see each other just once a year during the ‘Oixi celebration’ This is the one chance a year that Chinese girls pray to find good husbands! They offer Zhina fruit and carve melons for her, hoping that the ancient goddess of love and relationships will hear their intentions and grant their wishes....Oh lovelies what a sad story!

I

n Japan the celebration of St Valentine is a little different and girls give the traditional ‘Giri Choco’ to their male friends, which are chocolates with no romantic association but obligatory to give on that day.

I

n Germany, the celebration of Valentine's Day is popular with the exchange not only of chocolates, flowers and heart shaped gifts, but a special gift of a pig is given! The pig represents good luck and lust! The pig can be given in the form of a picture, a miniature statue or a chocolate pig! The Germans also prepare large cookies in heart shapes which contain special messages like ‘Ich Lioba dich’ which means ‘I love you’. Goodness lovelies, I do hope that you are taking all this in!

Nana’s Chocolate Truffle Cheesecake! You will need: 275g shortbread crumbs 50g icing sugar 5 tablespoons cocoa powder 75g Softened butter 350g Plain chocolate chips 2 x 300gram tubs cream cheese 400ml condensed milk 4eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract Method: Preheat your oven to 150/140 fan In a large bowl mix together crushed shortbread, icing sugar, cocoa and butter by hand. Press ingredients into a 23cm loose bottomed cake tin. Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave or in a bowl over a pan of boiling water, making sure they are very smooth. In a large bowl beat cream cheese with an electric mixer, then gradually beat in the condensed milk until you have a smooth texture. Mix in your melted chocolate, eggs and vanilla extract and beat with an electric mixer on a low speed until all the ingredients are thoroughly blended together. Pour into the prepared shortbread base. Bake for 55 minutes. NB: The cake may seem a bit under baked in the centre, but will continue to cook after you have removed it from the oven. Once cool, choose your own topping. For a very special Valentine romantic meal I would use fresh strawberries or raspberries dipped in melted chocolate! However, if you want to be extra naughty you could serve this yummy dish with fresh double cream. Ummmmm, enjoy!!! Well my lovelies if this doesn't make your boyfriend/ partner or husband feel romantic nothing will!

I

n Italy their day of love is celebrated in a classical way as it usually coincides with their Spring festival, where couples get together to celebrate music, poetry and exchange gifts like the ‘baki Perugina’ These are small boxes of hazelnuts filled with Choco kisse. ‘Baki’ means kiss in Italian!

I

n France - the city of love of course couples from all over the world flock to celebrate the special day! Lovers in France exchange letters and card. French history says that the Duke of Orleans was the first person to start the Valentine card as he signed his card as “ your valentine”. Returning to our own lovely England, the Saxons used to give the girl of their choice a pair of gloves as a gift, however it wasn’t until the 15th century that the first card was produced. This was mainly due to the fact that parchment was scarce and many people could not read or write! The first printed card may have been the title page of a book of versus published in 1669 entitled ‘A Valentine Write’ .With the introduction of the penny postage and the use of envelopes in 1840 card sending became much more popular with many people sending very elaborate cards to their loved one wrapped in ribbon and lace.

A

nother fact I discovered was that in 1872 the post office declared that parcels not exceeding 12 ounces in weight could be sent by letter post, this news meant that two days before Valentine's Day in Norwich alone, 150.000 letters containing small gifts were sent by pos! Goodness lovelies, Valentine's Day had really arrived! These days the red rose is a special declaration of love and lucky girls may hope to receive a dozen of them on this day. I would like to finish off by saying that if you are sadly on your own this Valentine's Day, then remember someone you used to love very much. I myself will be thinking of my late husband and raising my glass to him. My saying this month is:

Much love and God Bless Nana.xx

Derbyshire

Myths

Where Witches Dance... Britain is quite the magical land and is host to many ancient sites, one of those being the Nine Ladies Stone Circle in the heart of Derbyshire on the picturesque Stanton Moor – a place (Legend has it) where the witches gather…

S

tone circles are amazing sites for interest and although we don’t know the real reason for their existence despite many debates, they are certainly places you cannot do justice with a few words in an article - you have to visit. The Nine Ladies stone circle is located on Stanton Moor in Derbyshire and is owned by the English Heritage. It is an extremely popular spot for tourists, walkers, Druids and Pagans. It is a Bronze Age circle that contains nine upright stones and just to the south is a small standing stone – the King’s Stone – each made of local millstone grit, all less than a metre high. The English Heritage website states that it is “… traditionally believed to depict nine ladies turned to stone as a penalty for dancing on the Sabbath”. Could these have been witches?

28

Unfortunately there is very little evidence behind the placement or use of the stones but many assume it was used at the time of the Druids and still is used by pagans for many different ceremonies. Many pagans visit the site regularly, some use it to relax and soak up nature, some conduct their rituals there. In modern times there have even been wedding held there or ‘handfasting’ as Pagans traditionally call it. My first visit there was extraordinary, I’d never actually experienced or seen any stone circles before and there was a mixed feeling of both magic and eeriness. The walk over the moor was exquisite; the views are arguably some of the best in Derbyshire. I was expecting quite a few people to be around but as we approached there wasn’t a soul in sight, we had the place to ourselves.

With coloured ribbons blowing in the breeze from the tree branches and offerings such as, flowers, jewellery, wicker dolls and food scattered on the ground I knew this had to be a special place. It certainly did have a sense of tranquillity about it and as I wondered towards the stones I began to feel a sense of excitement. The location is absolutely breathtaking as you enter through woodland and smack in the middle is a huge clearing and there are the nine ladies in the clearing in all their glory. I stood in the middle of the circle and looked out into the wooded area, as I raised my head to the skies, a strange yet uplifting feeling came over me. The experience is truly amazing and even my 4 children found the stone circle and its legend absolutely fascinating.

F

or the outward route this walk takes a longer scenic route through Clough Wood to Stanton Moor. On the way back it visits a vicar's hobby at Birchover and includes a section of the Limestone Way. The walk starts from the village of Winster with its old Market Hall standing in the middle of the main street. This was the first property to be purchased by The National Trust. After parking locate Painters Lane situated on the road east of the village. Go down this lane keeping to the fence and ignoring the first left turn. Climb over the stile and follow the feint path to the end of the narrow field. Climb over the stile in the top left hand corner then immediately turn right dropping down to a further stile at the edge of the woods. Walk up the muddy wide path ahead through the woods and then continuing in the same direction across the first field. Go through the hedge. Do not take the farm track ahead but walk on the side of the hill, east towards the woods ahead of you. The stile is hidden behind a tree at the corner of the fence. Maps indicate a path sweeping left through the woods to Clough Lane. However this path is so little used that it has become an overgrown jungle trail and very difficult to follow. Ahead of you is a well-defined path that drops down through the old woods to join the lower path. Turn left along this lower path and follow it until it reaches a limestone vehicle track. Here you turn left uphill then prior to the gate turn left again along a bridleway.

On reaching Clough Lane turn left. Go right at the first footpath uphill to Barn Farm where you should look out for the Peacocks. Proceed through the farm to the road ahead. Turn right on the road. Ignore the first footpath on the left, instead go downhill and take the next very wide path that climbs up to the old quarry. Continue on this path following the fence. You pass many interesting rock formations some with carvings. A carving of a Y over a crown dated 1826 is in memory of The Duke of York. There are also good views across the valley to Matlock. The path ends at a tower built in tribute to Earl Grey who made a major contribution to the Reform Bill. He also liked his tea! Cross over the stile and turn right. The path leads you to The Nine Ladies stone circle, one of over sixty Bronze Age sites on this moor. The single stone standing on its own on the other side is called The King Stone. Leave The Nine Ladies via the path southward,. This crosses Stanton Moor. Turn right at the path junction. This path takes you past the Cork Stone with footholds cut into its side. The path terminates at a road. Turn left and proceed down the road passing the entrance to a quarry. Just before the corner turn right onto a footpath. This drops down behind the houses of Birchover ending opposite The Druid Inn.

Return to the lane, go past the church. Then at the end of the large house turn left. This path joins the drive to Rocking Stone Farm. At the top go through the gap to the left of the gate. The path now drops through the bushes opposite and down the fields to another gap to the left of a gate and a finger post pointing right. At first walk to the left of the hedge then bear left, keeping to the left of the hedge corner. Try and spot ahead of you at the top of the next field a low stone building with a wooden pylon next to it. Continue across the fields to a small gate and a short stone path leading away from it. Then continue through the hedges to climb up to the low building. Go through the gap and cross the field to the small gate in the hedge leading into Birchover Lane. Turn right then left into Elton Road and walk as far as the cemetery on the right. Go up the footpath at the side of the cemetery. Cross over the next road to continue up the lane. Turn left onto the wide Limestone Way. On reaching the road turn left then continue on The Limestone Way. When the path reaches a gate crossing it prior to Luntor Rocks, drop down the fields and go through a stone gap in the left hedge to follow the clear path back to Winster. The walk is approximately 5 miles

Walk down the lane to the left of the Inn and look out for a very narrow path at the end of the Inn's car park. This leads up to Rowtor Rocks. The Reverend Thomas Eyre, a local vicar, carved these rocks to form caves, steps, armchairs and rooms. A word of warning there are many holes in the path and unguarded edges that could lead to a fall.
