Insearchofsomesilverlinings

Currently,theglobalmoodis decidedlydownbeatandSouth Africaisnoexception.Inrecent months,mostconsumersand businesseshavebeenforcedto grapplewithhighfuelprices,rising inflation,higherinterestratesandthe regularoccurrenceofelectricityloadshedding.

Althoughafairlycomprehensiveplanof actionwasannouncedattheendofJulyto boostelectricitygeneration,itisabundantly clearthattheenergycrisisisfarfromover.

Oneofthemainreasonsbehindthe latestspateofload-shedding,whichinvolved stage6,isthelong-standinglackof maintenanceofthepowerutility’sgeneration units,especiallyduringthestatecapture decade.

AnotherproblemfacingEskomisthe skillsdearththatresultedfromtheerstwhile emphasisonatransformationagenda,which resultedinanexodusoflargenumbersof highlyskilledandexperiencedstaffthatwere encouragedtoleavetheutility.

Fortunately,Eskomhasjustannounced thedevelopmentofadigitalcrowdsourcing toolwhichwillallowpeoplewiththerequired expertisetosubmittheirdetailsonlinetohelp addresstheutility’ssevereskillshortage.

Privategeneratorstoeasethepain Anothersilverliningthatmaynotbetoofar inthedistanceistheannouncementby Eskomthatithaslaunchedthree programmestoprocuremorethan1000 MWforthenationalgrid,whichwillinitially focuson generators capableofsupplying morethan1MWtothegrid

Thiscapacityisbelievedtobe immediatelyavailablefromexisting idependent power producers(IPPs)andlarge companieswiththeirowngeneration capacity.

Eskomaimstosignthe first power supplyagreementswiththese companiesbeforetheendofSeptember.

Fortunately,SouthAfrica’seconomyhas remainedquiteresilientduring2022,with employmentcreationthestand-out performer.Sincethedisastrous2ndquarter of2020,whentheCovidpandemicstruck, morethan1.4millionnewjobshavebeen created.

Printersareanintegralpartofhomeandofficelife

Withtheinnovationof3Dprinting,thishasmovedon toencompassmorethan justinkonpaperandhas nowbecomeatoolfor manyprofessionsincludingmedical technologyandengineering.Wewillvisit thedifferenttypesofprinters,butmore importantly,theirdifferentapplicationsand uses.

Therearemanymakesandmodelsof printers,butmoreimportantly,thereare differenttypesofprinterstocompletethe task.Severalfactorsmustbetakeninto accountwhenpurchasingaprinter, primarily,whatyouwillneedtheprinter toaccomplish.Doyouneedmonochrome orcolour?Thecostinvolvedinthe maintenanceandreplacingtheinkor tonerisalsoamajorinfluenceronthe finalbuyingdecision.

Types

Letusstartbygivinganoverviewofthe differenttypesofprinters.Inorderto makeaneducatedchoice,itisalways besttovisitastorewhereyoucan comparetheprintqualityfirsthandand getabreakdownofthecostsforreplacing inkortoner.Aftersalescustomercareis alsoanimportantconsideration(asina repairorservicecentre),shouldtheneed

DotMatrixprinter

Thisisaprinterthathasbeenlargely discontinued.Itprintsbystrikingaribbon withapin,orsmallmetalhammer,so eachcharacterwillbemadeupoflotsof littledotsgroupedtogether.Thisisstillin usewheremulti-partformsareprinted likeinbanksandsomeutilitycompanies. Thoughaffordabletorunandmaintain, theyareeffectivebutlimiting.Youhave theoptionofmonochromeorwithonly oneadditionalcolour.Thesearenoisy machinesasyoucanimaginewithlittle hammersclackingmultipletimesfor everyletter.

Inkjetprinter

Inkjetprintersworkbypropelling dropletsofinkontopapertoforman imageortext.Mosthomeinkjetprinters areinexpensive,relativelysmall,and lightweight.Commercial-qualityinkjet printersarelarger,moreexpensive,and printonabroaderrangeofmaterials.

Thespeedofaninkjetprinterisusually ratedinhowmanypagesperminuteit printsinblackinkonlyandhowmany

pagesincolour.Thespeedofdifferent

printersvaries,butanaverageratingis 10.5pagesperminuteinblack-onlyink andfivepagesperincolour.Mosthomeuseinkjetprinterscanhandlestandard A4paper.Theyuseinkcartridges,usually withblack,yellow,cyan(blue)and magenta(red).Thereisachipinthe cartridgewhichwillinformyouiftheink isrunninglow.Cartridgescanbe expensive,butsomeofthemcanbe refilled.Althoughthisisrelatively inexpensive,theprintedimagemaybe lesscrispwithrefillsovertime.

BubbleJetPrinter

ABubbleJetprinterisatypeofinkjet printer.Themaindifferencebetweenan inkjetandaBubbleJetprinteristhatthe latterusesheattopreparetheink, whereasaninkjetprintermakesuseof piezoelectriccrystals.Onlyone manufacturer(Canon)makesBubbleJet Printers.

LaserPrinter

Laserprintersusesanon-impact photocopiertechnologywherethereare nokeysstrikingthepaper.

Whenadocumentissenttotheprinter,a laserbeam"draws"thedocumentona selenium-coateddrumusingelectrical charges.

Printers

Thedrumisthenrolledintoner,adry powdertypeofinkthatadherestothe chargedimageonthedrum.Thetoneris transferredontothepaperandfused usingheatandpressure.Thespeedis higherthanthatofaninkjetprinterat12 –20pagesperminute(ppm)inblack andabout12ppmforcolour.Toner cartridgesareusedinlaserprinters,and thesearemoreexpensivethaninkjet cartridges,buttheyalsolastalotlonger. Itwilldependonbudgetandtheamount ofprintingthatyouneedtodo.

Allinoneprinter

Thesemachinescanperformmultiple tasks,likeprinting,scanning, photocopying,andfaxingore-mailing. Somemachinesarealsocapableof collating,stapling,holepunchingand duplexing.Manyofthesetypesof machineshaveasecuritycodeoptionso thattheprintingwillonlycommenceafter acodehasbeenentered.Thisensures privacyandsecuritybutalsohelpswith themanagementofthecostrelatedto thismachine.Theycanbeprintinblack orcolourandareacompletesolutionfor thoseintheoffice.Thehigherthespeed, themorecostlythemachineandmostof thesemachinesareidealforanoffice environment.

SupertankPrinter

Theseprintersareinkjetprinters,butwith acontinuousinksystem(CISS).

Supertankprintersdifferfromtraditional inkjetprintersinthattheprintheadis connectedviaatubesystemthatdraws inkfromhigh-capacityinktanks,which arefilledandrefilledviahigh-capacityink bottles,eliminatingtheneedforink cartridges.Cost-per-page(CPP)canbe significantlylowerthantraditional cartridges,sincethereplacementink bottlescontainenoughinktoprint thousandsofpages,loweringthecostper pageconsiderably.Thepurchasepricesof themachinethoughareahigherthana conventionalinkjet,andeventhoughthe inkcoststhesameasacartridge,itwill lastforthousandsofpages.Thespeed maybealittleslowerbutnotnoticeably. Theprinterheadmaydryoutifnotin regularuse,sothisiscertainlygeared towardthosethatneedtoprintregularly ratherthanonceortwiceamonth.

SublimationPrinters

Allsublimationprintinghappensthrough specialsublimationprinters.Thereare differenttypesofsublimationprintersand

theyeachcomewiththeirownsetofpros andcons.Sublimationisthenameofthe processwherebysolidsareturnedinto gases,withoutneedingtogothroughthe liquidstage.Heatandatransference materialareused.Gasespermeateinto thetoplayersofwhateveryou’reprinting ontogiveyouasharpandhighresolutionrepresentationoftheprint design.

Itoffersthehighestresolutionandis, therefore,thebestwaytoprintphotos ontoshirts,plates,mugs,displayunits, etc.Youcanprintdifferenttypesof surfacesandnotjustfabricscombined withtheabilitytoprintverylong-lasting printsthatdon’tfadeeasilyorget removedbywashing.

Here’stheprocess:

Useadigitalprintertoproduceanimage ontospecialsublimationtransferpaper, usingsublimationink.Thesublimation paperisthenputintoaheatpressalong withthematerialyou’llbeprintingonto withthetemperatureusuallybetween 180and200degreesCelsius.Atthis point,boththetransfermaterialandthe inkareturnedfromsolidtogas.Asagas, itpermeatesintothefibresofthematerial you’reprintingonto-evenceramicor glasswillallowpenetrationofthegas. Oncetheheatingprocessiscompleteand theinkhassetintoplace,thetransfer paperlocksitinthere.Theheatand pressureareremoved,causingtheinkto returntothesolid-stateandlockingitin place.Theheatpressandthesublimation printerareseparateunitsandaren’t interchangeable.Sublimationprintersare oftenpurposebuiltforaspecifictask.

LEDorLCDPrinter

Similartolaserprinters,LED(Light EmittingDiode)printerscontaina photoreceptivedrumwherethesurfaceis positivelychargedwithstaticelectricityby ahighvoltagewire.InanLEDprinter, however,thenegativestaticchargeis insteadcreatedbyastripofLEDsthat’s eitheraboveorbelowthedrum.The patternoflightfromtheLEDshitsthe positivelychargeddrumanderasesthe chargewhereitlands,therebycreatinga negativechargeintheimageofthepage thatitisprinting.

Positivelychargedpowderedprintertoner isthendispersedontothedrum,sticking wherethenegativechargehasbeen createdbytheLEDs.Aspaperentersthe

printer’smechanism,itispositively chargedbyaseparatehighvoltagewire andasitispushedpasttheprinting drum,attractsthetonerfromthe negativelychargedpartswhereithas stuck.Thesheetofpaperthenpasses betweentwoheatedrollers,fusingthe tonertothepage.Thesearegenerally quieter,morecompactandmorereliable duetonomovingelements.

Theyarealsofasterthanalaserandmore energyeffective.LiquidCrystalDisplay,or LCD,printersareessentiallythesame, usinganLCDstripinsteadofLEDorlaser toachievethesamething.

SolidInkPrinter

Solidinkprintersuseinkinanon-liquid form;alaser-classprinterthatusessolid waxinksthataremeltedintoaliquid beforebeingused.Insteadofjettingthe inkontothepaperdirectly,solidink printersjettheinkontoadrum.Abetter registrationofcolourisobtainedby transferringtheinktothedrumfirstand thentotheprinter,becausethedrumcan bemoretightlycontrolledthanmoving paper.

Thebrightandvividcoloursitproducesis excellent,butthecostoftheseprintersis abitmorethananinkjet.

Forpeoplewhoearntheirlivingbasedon thevibrancyoftheirprintsthisisanideal solutionasitwillmaketheircustomers happier.Asidefromtheexceptionalprint quality,usersalsofindthattheactual sticksofinkaretidierandmore appropriateforofficeuse,astheydonot leaveamessyresidue.Theycanbeprone toblockagesthough.

ThermalPrinter

Directthermalprintersrelyonheat,rather thaninkortoner,totransferanimagebut usesthermalpaper.Duetoqualityof print,speed,andtechnologicaladvances ithasbecomeincreasinglypopularandis mostlyusedinairline,banking, entertainment,retail,grocery,and healthcareindustries.

TECHNIQUES

Encaustic

ThisisatechniquedatingbacktoancientEgyptanditinvolvessuspending pigmentinhotbeeswax.Thecolouredpasteisthenappliedtowood,butyou canalsousecanvas.Specialisedtoolsareusedtoshapeandsculpttheliquid beforeitcoolsandsolidifies.Contemporaryartistsoftenuseheatgunsto extendtheworkabilityofthepaint.Thoughencaustic—orhotwaxpainting— canbedifficulttomaster,itispossibletocreatecomplexpaintingswithlotsof dimensionandcolour.

Fresco

Thisisbestknown,thankstoMichelangelo’siconicSistineChapelCeiling. BuonFrescoisaveryoldtechniquethatinvolvesmixingpigmentwithwater andapplyingthistostillwetplaster,whichformsapermanentbondwhendry. InkWash

Tempera

History

Modernscraperboardoriginatedinthe 19thcenturyinBritainandFrance.As printingmethodsdeveloped,scraperboard becameapopularmediumfor reproductionbecauseitreplacedwood, metalandlinoleumengraving.Itallowed forafinelineappearancethatcouldbe photographicallyreducedforreproduction withoutlosingquality.Itwasmost effectiveandexpeditiousforuseinsinglecolorbookandnewspaperprinting.From the1930sto1950s,itwasoneofthe preferredtechniquesformedical, scientificandproductillustration.During thattimeperiod,VirgilFinlaymadevery detailedillustrations,oftencombining scraperboardmethodswithtraditional pen&inktechniques,andproducing highlydetailedartworks.Inmorerecent years,ithasmadeacomebackasan appealingmediumforeditorialillustrators ofmagazines,ads,graphicnovels,and oneofakindpiecesoffineartdisplayed ingalleriesandmuseumsinternationally.

Technique

Unlikemanydrawingmedia,wherethe artistaddsinthemid-tonesand shadows,withscratchboardtheartistis workingbyaddinginthehighlights.The artistcanuseavarietyoftoolstoscratch awaytheblackinkfromtheboardand revealmoreorlessofthewhiteclaythat isunderneath(seematerialslistbelowfor tools).Afterblackinkhasbeenremoved asdesiredtheworkmaybeconsidered

complete,orsubsequentlybecolored withwatercolors,airbrush,ink,color penciloracrylics.Transparentmediaare generallyusedtocolorscratchboard,as theyfillinthewhitescratcheswithout affectingtheblackinkleftontheboard.
