Father'sDayisacelebrationhonouringpeople'sfathersandcelebratingthefatherhood,paternalbonds,and theinfluenceoffathersinsociety.ItwasfirstproposedbySonoraSmartDodd,thedaughterofanAmerican CivilWarveteran(WilliamJacksonSmart)in1909.ItiscurrentlycelebratedintheUnitedStatesannuallyon thethirdSundayinJune.

Itiscelebratedwithdifferenttraditionsindifferentpartsoftheworld.FathersinGermanycelebratewithbeerwhilst inMexicotheypartakeinaroadrace.InThailandfathersreceiveflowersandinRussiathereareoftenmilitary paradestocelebratemen.BrazilwillhaveabarbecueandinFinlanditisacozyaffairwithbreakfastinbed.

Andjustlikethatwehitthehalfwaymarkfor2023!

Atthispointitisalwaysgoodtolookatthegoalsyousetfortheyearandevaluateifyouareon trackandifyouwillachievethesegoals.ForSHOP-SA,aswegettotheendofourfinancialyear, wealsoneedtoreviewtheyearthatwasanddraftourscorecard.

Ithasbeenatoughyearandsomedifficultdecisionsneededtobetakentoensurethatthe Associationsurvives–alegacyof107yearscannotjustbeignored.Somuchhasgoneintothe Associationoveracentury,andwebelievethattheworkisnotdoneyet.TheAssociationhasa roletoplayinitsservicetotheindustry.

However,anyAssociationisasstrongasitsmembershipandthebenefitsofmembership.Itisa pitythatonlysomeofthemembersareactivelyrespondingtorequestsforarticles,contributing towardstheoperationalcostsbyadvertisinginthenewslettersandthemagazineandsharing newswiththeadministrationoftheAssociation.

Everythingwedo–whetherweareatashow(seethearticleonScofex)orpromotingactivities fromothermembersofthisindustry–isbeingdoneintheinterestofpromotingthestationery, home,andofficeproductsindustry.

Togetourindustrytogether,wehavereservedspaceattheupcomingSignAfricashow (13-15September)andwillbeco-locatingwiththem.Thebenefitsofexposuretothismarket segmentwillexceedyourexpectationsandweinviteoneandalltojoinus.

TheCovid-19pandemicgloballychangedbusinessandhadanimpacton travellingandmeetingpatterns.Thedigitalmeetingspaceexperienced massivegrowth–yetitseemsthatmorebusinessmeetings,conferencesand exhibitionsarereturningtothein-personformat.

The Mail&Guardian reportedin March2022thatthepandemic hadadevastatingeffectbut thatThembaKhumalo,then actingCEOofSouthAfrican Tourismsaidthetimehascomefor meetingstobeginagain.Hespokeat theopeningonthe2022Meetings Africaexhibitionwhenhesaidthetime isherebecausepeopletonotrelatedto oneanotheraspixelsonascreenbut needtomeetinpersonandfeedonthe energyintheroom.

Atthetime,theSouthAfricanNational ConventionBureaureportedthatmore than35eventshavebeenpostponed since2021,butbeforethepandemic themeetings,incentives,conferences andexhibitions(alsoknownasMICE) industrywasworthandestimated R853billion.Projectionswerethatthis woulddoubleby2030.

Bizcommunity.com reportsthatatthe openingofthe2023MeetingsAfrica Khumalosaid:thattheglobaltourism sectorisready,withrenewedenergy andmotivation,togrowandbuildtheir sectortopre-pandemiclevels.

Accordingtothearticle,Khumalosaid "MeetingsAfricaaimstocontributeto helpingAfricanbusinessevents playersrestartandgrow.Wewantto createopportunitiesforAfrica’s businesseventssectorsothatwecan allgrowbackmorevitalthanever before.Ournewlookrepresentsthis newinjectionofenergyandisan emphasisontheimportancethatwe placeonconnections."

Inaninterviewwith TheIncentive Planner,SAAssociationforthe ConferenceIndustry,GlentondeKock, saidthattheindustrywasonitswayto recovery.Hesaidthatthereturnwas slow,butthattheindustryhasshownit wasreadytohostbigeventsonce more.ThiswasechoedbyDevi Paulsen-Abbott,chairpersonofthe AfricanAssociationofExhibition Organisers(AAXO).

ShetoldTheIncentivePlanner: “In SouthAfrica,theindustryisontrackto recovertopre-pandemiclevelsby 2024/25,somyoutlookispositive. However,ournarrativeneedstobefar moreconsidered.Shehighlightedthat

negativeinternationalmediacoverage ofload-sheddingchallenges,water shortagesinsomeprovinces,and safetyandsecurityconcernscanhurt ourabilitytoattractinternational events.“Weasanindustryneedto ensurethatwestronglyrenderthatour abilitytooperateistenableandthat securityconcerns,whilerational,are generallynothighriskinmaintourist destinations,”shestresses.

Thereturntophysicalandin-person eventsisgoodforthestationery industryaswell.Notonlywillpensand notebooksbeneededforconferences, butlanyards,accesscardsandtickets, postersandmarketingmaterialwillbe required.Thismeansthatmore printingwillbedone,moreSWAGbags willberequiredandmorecorporate brandeditemswillagainbeneededby thisindustry.

Havingyourownstationery–evenmarkedwithachild’snameonit–ismorethanjustproofof ownership.Itisthekeyelementthatcanopenthedoorofopportunityforthechild.Itcan introducethemtoaworldofexpressionandfreedomtousetheircreativity.

Manychildrenstartthe schoolyearwithoutthe toolstheyneed.Andthis mayhaveasevereimpact ontheirdevelopment.My Officeaskedanorganisationwhich addressesthisproblem,totellusmore aboutthereasonsfordoingthis.

SolidarityHelpingHandstrivesto ensureeducation,trainingand developmentforthecommunity–but theyspecificallyalsohaveafocuson children.Forthisreasontheyhave launchedseveralprojectstoaddress theneedsofchildrenonvariouslevels.

Thenational“Skooltassie”-project startedin2007andaimstoprovidea suitcasewiththerequiredstationeryin thehandsofeveryneedygradeone learner.Bydoingthis,theyensurethat allchildrenstarttheirschoolyearsfrom thesamebasis.TheSolidarityHelping Handprojectalsooffersacreche serviceandafterschoolcarecentreto 400children.Theyagreethat educationandtrainingisnotpossible withoutthenecessarystationery. Theimportantofeachchildhavingtheir ownstationerycannotbe underestimate.Theuseoftheirown stationeryisakeyaspectofthe creativedevelopmentandtheprocess ofself-expression.Theseareinturn essentialforthedevelopmentof languageskillsandlearningwriting abilities,whicharebothimportantfor academicgrowth.

Achildwhoownshisorherown stationery,experiencesafeelingof ownershipfortheirwork.These feelingsofprideandinclusionoften encourageschildrentogivetheirbest. Thewellknownauthor,William Wordsworth,said“Fillyourpaperwith thebreathingoftheyourheart”.

SouthAfricalosesR2.2billionperyear tocybercrime,accordingtoa 2020 Accenturereport. Kasperskyresearch showsthat32.5%oflocaluserswere affectedbyonlinethreatslastyear. FouroutoffiveSouthAfrican organisations-78%-werehitby ransomwareinthepastyear,a considerableincreasefromthe51% thatreportedanattackin2022,and wellabovetheglobalaverageof66%. Thisisaccordingtoanewindependent reportfromSophos whichsurveyed3 000IT/cybersecurityleadersin14 countries,including200inSouthAfrica.

Althoughwhiteboardsbecame acommonfeatureinthe workspaceandeducational spaceinthemid-90’s,they wereactuallyinventedand becamecommerciallyavailableinthe 1950salready.Intheearlydaysthey werenotsoaccessible,andonly becamepopularuntildecadeslater.

Theearlierversionsofwhiteboards requiredawipedownwithadampcloth toremovethemarkerinkandmarks wereinevitablyleftbehind.Dry-wipe markershadnotyetbeeninventedat thattime. Thelackofsuitablemarkers causedissueswithreusingtheboard, andsomostpeoplepreferredthe traditionalchalkboard,wherethey couldbrushawaychalkwithease.Drywipemarkerswerefinallyinventedin 1975andwasaturningpointwhich helpeddrivethepopularityof whiteboards.

Theinventors

Twokeypeoplearecreditedforthe inventionofthewhiteboard–thefirst beingphotographercalledMartinHeit. Hisidea,whichwasconceptualisedas asmallscribblingboardonthewall nexttothephone,wasborninthe 1950s.Heusedfilmnegativestomake notesonandcouldwipeitclean–givinghimtheideatodevelopareusablenoteboard.

Someemployersaretoosoftand trustingwhenreceiving grievancesandgiveinbefore evenestablishingwhetherthe grievancehasmerit.

However,moreoftenemployersgoto theoppositeextremeandbrushall grievancesasidebecausetheyarenot there‘todealwithemployees’sob stories’orbecausethestatutesdonot provideforthelodgingofgrievances.

Donotignore.

Whileitistruethatnostatute specificallyrequiresemployerstosolve theiremployee’spersonalproblems therearemanycircumstancesunder whichemployerswouldbefoolishto ignoregrievances.Forexample:

� Wherethecontinuedexistenceof theproblemaffectsemployee moralethismayinturncausea dropinproductivity,increasesin wastage,resignationsandeven conflict.Thisnormallyoccurswhere theresolutionofthegrievanceis seenbytheemployeesasthe employer’sresponsibility.This wouldforinstancebewhenthe employermovedpremises, resultingincommutingproblemsfor theemployees.

� Whereemployeesarebeing abusedverballyorphysicallybya manager,thepracticalandlegal consequencesfortheemployer couldbedireiftheemployerdoes notactquickly,fairlyandeffectively. Thiswouldbethecase,for instance,wheretheemployeeis beingsexuallyharassed,insultedor bullied.

Expensiveconsequences.

Employersareremindedofthe expensiveconsequencesforthe employerintheRealSecuritycasewe discussedsomemonthsago.

Theretheemployerhadtopaytensof thousandsofrandincompensationto theemployeewhohadbeensexually harassedbyasupervisorsimply becausetheemployee’sgrievances wereignoredbytheemployer.

Employeeswhosesalariesarenotpaid tothem,andreceivenosatisfaction fromtheemployerwhenexpressing suchgrievancesare,underspecific circumstances,entitledbylawtoresign andtaketheemployertotheCCMAor bargainingcouncilforconstructive dismissal(atypeofforcedresignation). Someemployersnotonlyignoreall employeegrievancesbutalsovictimise certainemployeesforraisingthose grievances.Suchemployeesare arbitrarilylabelledas‘troublemakers’ andaretoldto‘likeitortakeahike’.

Casestudy.

InthecaseofKannemeyervs WorkforceGroup(2005,8BALR824) theemployeelodgedaninternal grievancewithheremployerbecause hercommissionratehadbeenreduced withoutheragreement.Thereafter, accordingtoher,shewasvictimisedfor havinglodgedthisgrievance.

Shethenresignedandclaimed constructivedismissalonthegrounds ofherreducedcommissionrateand becausetheemployer,whohad instituteddisciplinaryproceedings againstKannemeyerforpoorwork performance,claimedthatshehad resignedinanticipationoftheoutcome ofthepoorworkperformancehearing.

Theemployerdeniedthatshehad resignedduetovictimisationbutrather becauseshewantedtoavoidbeing dismissedforpoorperformance.

Thearbitratorfoundthat:

� Theemployerhadbroughtno evidencedisputingtheemployee’s allegationsofvictimisation.

� Insteadofresigningtheemployee couldhaveconsideredlodginga secondgrievanceagainsttheway inwhichherfirstgrievancehad beenhandled.

� However,asshehadreceiveda negativeresponsetoherfirst grievance,shecouldbeforgivenfor havinglostfaithinthegrievance process.

� Whilethepoorperformance chargesappearedtobegenuine theemployeehadbeenvictimised forlodginghergrievance.

� Thisconstitutedunfairconstructive dismissal.

� Theemployerwasrequiredtopay theemployeeeightmonths remunerationincompensation.

Inthelightoftheaboveitiscrucial foremployerswhoreceive grievances:

� Toensurethatthegrievantisnot mistreatedinanywayafterhaving lodgedthegrievance.

� Toinvestigateeachgrievance thoroughlywhilekeepinganopen mind.

� Judgethevalidityofthegrievance basedonthefactsandnotbased onwhohaslodgedthegrievance, orwhohasbeennamedinthe grievance.

� Ifthereisanymeritinthegrievance useanindustrialrelationsexpertto helpdeviseanappropriatesolution thatwillnotcreateaproblematic precedent.

Italsoposedseveralnewquestionsfor theethicaluseofAIandresponses haveledfromoutrightbans,callfora moratoriumonits’furtherdevelopment tostrongadvocacyofitsbenefitsto humanity.

Therecanbenodoubtonthe economicandsocialimpactofAI.The AImarketisforecasttogrowtoa staggering$1.5trillionby2030butits multipliereffectontheglobalGDPis tentimesthat–40%fromproductivity increasesand60%fromconsumptionsideeffects.Ithasalreadychangedthe socialstructureofcommunities, countries,andtheworldbothpositively andnegatively.

Theresponsesrangefromlegislation e.g.,theAIActinEuropeandanAIBill ofRightsintheUSAontheonehandto thepublishingofvalue-basedprinciples toregulatetheuseofAIbytheOECD ontheother.Allthemembersofthe G20nationsincludingSouthAfricaare signatoriestotheseprinciples publishedin2019.

CurrentlytheKingIVcodeofconduct implicitlygovernstheuseofAIand therearechangesbeingconsideredto makethisexplicit.Itremainstobeseen whichapproachwouldbetherightone buttheexponentialgrowthinAIwill outstriptheglacialpaceofformulating andpromulgatinglegislationwhilea principledapproachmightjustkeepup.

Wehaveallseenithappen. Apersonwalkingalong theroad,eatingapieor drinkingacolddrinkand then,whendone,just dropsthepaperbagorcanwherethey are.Often,theyaresoclosetoa rubbishbin–yetpaper,cans,plastic andpolystyrenelinesourstreets.

Why,onewouldask,isitsucha commonoccurrence?Somesaythat laziness,alackofvigilanceby municipalauthorities,lackof infrastructuresuchaslitterbinsin streets,andthebeliefthatoneman’s actionscan’tdamageasocietyasa whole.
