Thishasbeenayearofnewbeginningsandfond farewellsforusatSHOP-SA.HanlieDelportwas broughtinasCOOandwebidHansServasfarewell asheretiredattheendofJune.VanessaBentley,also knownastheDTPguru,leftustofollowherown pursuitsinSeptemberandsadlythismonthWendyleaves SHOP-SAafter11years.

Astheclockof2022isslowly windingdown,wecanreflectona yearduringwhichwehadsome businessgains,wereconnectedwith friends,colleagues,andfamilylike beforethepandemicandwecould settleintothenewrhythmofapost COVID-19world.

Thisyearwillberememberedfor manyreasons–wesawchanges globallywiththepassingofthe QueenofEngland,thecontinued warbetweenRussiaandthe Ukraine,naturaldisastersand politicalunrestinmanycountries.It maybethatpeoplearefeelingabit hopelessbeingstuckinaneconomic crisisthatwilltakeawhileto change.

Inourindustry,withtheacademic yearnowfullybacktoitsprepandemicstatus,wearelooking forwardtoabumperseasonofsales inthebacktoschoolmarket.Many

ofourmembersandreadershave beenextremelybusysince Septemberthisyeartogettheirstock levelsandproductrangesreadyfor the2023academicyear.Itismy wishthatthiswillbeanextremely goodcampaignforall.

Havingworkedforalarge stationeryretailerforeight years,Richardusedthis timetogarnerwide-ranging experienceintheworkings ofaverycompetitivesector.

Withtheknowledgegleanedand armedwithanaturalentrepreneurial flair,hedecidedto‘taketheplunge’in 1987andstarthisownbusiness, EagleStationers. “Thiswasonly possiblewiththebackingofmy customersandthesupportofmy family,aswellaslivingbythemotto, “WINNERSDOITNOW!”,says Richard.

Thebusinesswasinitiallyfoundedina smallofficeinEscovalHouseinSmith Street,(nowAntonLembede)Streetin Durban.

EagleStationershasnowbeenin operationfor35Years. “Initially,Ihad astaffcomplimentofonlytwo employeesandfocusedononly supplyingofficestationery,withgreat servicebeingthemaindriverofthe business,” Richardtoldus.

Asthecompanygrew,sodidthestaff complimentincreaseinlinewiththis growth.EagleStationerscurrentlyhave astaffcomplimentof20members. Thisexpansionwasnotjustinthe customerandstaffbase,butcritically inthebasketofgoodsthattheyoffered tomeettheneedsoftheirgrowing customerbase–frompurelyfocusing onstationery,theynowofferafull rangeofofficefurniture,computer suppliesaswellasotheroffice suppliessuchasgroceries!

OWNBUILDING

Richardexplainedthattheyhave clientsthatwerewithEaglefrom inceptionandstillsupportthemto date.

Hebelievesthatthisispartlyduetoa longprofessionalrelationship,but mainlyasEaglepridethemselveson theiruniqueservicedelivery-they offerasamedayornextdaydelivery totheircustomers!

ForRichard2006markeda momentousmilestonebothpersonally andprofessionally,ashepurchased hisownbuilding,basedinMorrison Street,fromwheretheyarecurrently operating.

PARTNERSHIP

In2009EagleStationersbecamea memberofOfficeNationalAfrica, whichisthelargest,independently ownedcommercialandretailprovider ofstationery,officefurniture,business technologyproductsaswellas canteenandjanitorialproducts.

RichardNaidooisoneofthesuccessstoriesofourindustry. Thisfriendlymanstartedasmallbusinesswhichhehas grownintoasuccessfulenterprise.

TEAMRISINGTOTHECHALLENGES

“Ithinkthatthethingthathasimpressedmethemost inmypositionovertheyears,istheteamworkthatmy staffhasshowninmeetinganychallengesthatarise, bigorsmall,beitdeliveryandinstallingafurniture orderinthetimelinepromisedorensuringthatan urgentprintingorderiscompletedanddelivered timeously”,hesays.

AlbertEinsteinoncefamouslysaid:"Compoundinterestisthe8thwonder oftheworld.Hewhounderstandsit,earnsit;hewhodoesn’t,paysit."

Einsteincouldn'thaveputit better.Compoundinteresttrulyis oneofthemostpowerfulforces intheuniverse,anditcanboth workforyouinthecaseof growinginvestmentsoragainstyouin thecaseofcompoundingdebt.Thekey ingredientforcompoundinggrowthis time.

Thatsaid,fewpeopletrulytake advantageofthisfinancialtooltoits fullest.

Retirementannuities(RA)arebuilton thisconcept,soknowingthattimeisthe keyingredient,whydosomanypeople startanRAsolate?

Lastlyifyoudothedepositandkeepthe monthlycontributionsatR250per monthforthefull65years,thetotal wouldbeaboutR4,052,946.18.

Thedownsideofthisinvestmentisthatit islockedintillretirementandcannotbe withdrawn,butfuturesecurityisthe nameofthegame.

4.Timeisonyourside.Thelonger

moneycompounds,thefasterit grows.Moneygrowingat6percent peryearwilldoubleinabout12 years,butitwillbeworthfourtimes asmuchin24years.

5.Timeisnotonyourside.Credit cardsandotheropen-endedaccounts usecompoundinterestagainstyou. That'swhy“minimumpayments”are likelytokeepyouindebtforever.

6.Don'tletlowinterestratesdiscourage you.It'struethatbanksaren'tpaying muchonsavingsaccounts.Butmany investmentsaverageahigherreturn andhaveverylowminimumsandno monthlycharges.Ifyoucan'tapplya fewRandtosavings,mostdebts (thinkmortgageorcreditcards)will allowyoutoaddanyamounttoyour payment.

7.Itaddsupfasterthanyouthink.If youweretosaveR5permonth, you’dearn5percentinterest compoundedeachmonthandwith thatcontinuallyfor10yearsyou'd haveputR600intosavings.Butthe accountwouldbeworthR776.And, evenifyoudidn'taddasingledime,

itwouldbeworthmorethanR1,500 inanother15years.Obviouslythe moreyousave,themoreyouearn.

8.Compoundinterestcanfreeyoufrom creditcards.Supposeyourinterest rateis14percentandyouaddjust R5permonthtoyourpayment.In10 years,you'llavoidR1,315in payments.

9.Youdon'thavetoberichtomake compoundinterestworkforyou.The principalworksthesamewhether youinvestedR100orR100million. Themillionairemayhavemore investmentoptions,buteventhe poorestamonguscanusecompound interesttoreducetheamountthatwe paycredit-cardcompanies.

10.Compoundinterestrequiresyouto sacrificetodaytoreapabenefit tomorrow.It'struethatyou'llneedto dosomethingtosaveafewdollars today.Butit'scertainthatthefuture rewardwillbegreaterthanthe sacrifice. �

Whatwentup,camedownandwhatwentdown–wellwhoknowswhereitwent.

Thisyearhasagainbeenauniqueexperience–onethatwearekeentoputbehindus.

Thisyearhasbeenachallengingonefor manybusinessesandformostpeople. Aftertwoyearsofvariouspandemic protocolsandlearningtoworkremotely, restrictionswereliftedandthemajority oftheworkforcewentbacktotheoffice.

Asidefromhavingtoreintegrateback intoofficemodeandlearnhowtobe socialandwearbusinessattirerather thanpyjamapantsandat-shirt,many workersreturneddeterminedthatthey shouldbecompensatedforgoingthe extramile.Ontheotherhandbusinesses feltbyandlargethatemployeesshould begratefulforhavingajobanda stalemateensued.Thisresultedinthe adventof quietquitting whichposeda furtherchallengetoemployeesand businessesalike.

Wehavehadan interestrate hikeevery othermonthsinceNovember2021,the lasttwoof75basispointsinbothJuly andSeptemberandeconomistsare forecastinganotherhikefortheendof theyearandestimatesarebettingon 100bp.Thecurrentreporateis6.25%. Thisinturnwillputmorepressureon consumersandhome-ownersaswellas anyonewithdebt.

Failingstateownedenterprises

Addtoallthedomesticjoy, Russiaand Ukraine wenttowarinFebruary.The whycanbepostulated,andthereare severaltheories,themostcredibleisthat UkrainewantedtobecomeaNATO member,somethingwhichdidnotsit wellwithPutin.However,evenafter Ukraine’spresident,VolodymyrZelensky, saidthathewouldnotpursuethis course,thewarcontinuedandisstill going.Theinstabilityintheregionand subsequentsanctionsandtravelbansfor Russiahasresultedinfuelshortagesand otherissuesforEurope,nowinwinter.

AntonHerbstfromTarsusresignedhis positiontofollowanotherpathaway fromITandsoourindustryhasseena fairfewchanges.OnapositivenotePNA openedseveralnewstoresand celebratedtheir30thbirthdaywiththe openingoftheirnewheadoffice,andwe hadalovelytimeconnectinginpersonat theOfficeNationalConferenceand exhibitioninJuly.

The fuelprice thendecidedtojointhe partyandaimforrecordhighs,andthe

Chinahascontinuedwith Covid lockdowns wheretherestoftheworld hasgonebacktowork.Thishasresulted insupplychainissuesmostlyforbutnot limitedtotechnologyrelatedsupplies. TheITindustryinSouthAfricahavehad tothinkfasttoensurestockavailability andparts.Otherindustriesaffectedby thecontinuinglockdownshave collaboratedtoassisteachothersothat businesscancontinueandapaper

2023willbeanewyearwithsomeold challengesandsomenew,therewillbe morechangeandbusinesswillevolve butthewheelswillkeepturning. A Sticky situation

Butthereissomuchmoretothisthan justtheoldstandbys.Thereare hundredsofbrandnameoutthereand glueforalmostalleventualities,wewill lookatthedifferentgluesinthisarticle andtheiruseswithacoupleoffunfacts andhandytipstokeepyouglued!

History

Believeitornot,gluehasbeenproduced andusedbymanformorethan200000 years!Neanderthalsmadetarfromthe drydistillationofbirchbarkforusein bindingstonetoolstowoodenhandles. TheancientEgyptiansalsousedgluesbut thesewerederivedfrommilkofallthings. Otherareasoftheworlddevelopedglues fromdifferentsourcesasdiverseasfish,

andvariousanimalproducts.

Fromthatinauspiciousstartwearrivein themoderndayandthevarietyofglues availablearetrulystaggering.Thereare9 typesofgluethatformthefoundationof allthedifferentadhesivesavailabletoday: Epoxy,polyurethane,cyanoacrylate, polyvinylacetate,silicone,rubbercement, solventcement,UVadhesiveandspray adhesives.Theyareallmultipurposeand providedifferentbenefitsthatmakethem suitableforsolvingmorespecific problems.

Wewilllookatthevariousgluesandtheir usesandeventheirancestrytoseewhere thegluecamefromandhowitevolved intowhatitistoday.

Superglue

Superglueismadefromacyanoacrylate monomer.Duetoitsstrongbondand

fast-drying,supergluehasmany household,medical,andindustrialuses. Itisoneofthefastestbondingandcuring gluesthatpolymerisewhenexposedto moistureandcreateverystrongbonds–justaskanyonethathasaccidentally managedtogluethelidontothetube!

ApplicationsandAdvantages

Supergluecanbeusedonglass,leather, ceramic,metal,wood,ceramic,andsome plastics,itwillnotbondonsomeplastics, soyoumaywanttooptforadifferent glueifyouareunsure.Supergluecomes indifferentviscositiesanddependingon thiswillhavedifferentdryingtimes.

Disadvantages

Supergluewon’tbondeffectivelyto smoothplastic.Iftherearemovingparts orimpact,supergluehaslittleimpactand shearstrengthandthebondwillfail ratherquickly.

Gluesandadhesives

Rubbercement

RubberCementisafast-actingadhesive, idealforscrapbookingartsandcraftsbut isalsousedformostinflatablerepairs. Thevalueforcraftersisthatitwon’t wrinkleordamagedelicatematerialslike newspaperclippingsandphotos.Itworks wellwithinflatablerepairsbecauseit remainsflexiblewhendry.

AlsoknownasContactCement,it’smade fromelastomerpolymerslikesolidrubber thatisdissolvedinasolventlikea heptaneoracetone.Whenitdriesthe solventevaporates.Thefinalproductisa gentleglueyoucanpeeloffaftersetting androllbetweenyourfingerslikeputty.

WhiteCraftGlue

WhitecraftglueismadefromPolyvinyl acetate,orPVA,andisusedforgluing porousmaterials,arts&crafts,porous pottery,cloth,paper,andwood.Ittakes onehourtosetbutwillcureeffectively within24hours.Itworksbestwhenthe itemisclampeddownuntilthegluesets anddriescompletely–toachieveenough strength.Whenitdriesitisflexibleand clear.However,youcanmixinpigments, dyesorfineglittertocreateadifferent effectforartsandcrafts.

ApplicationsandAdvantages

Whitecraftglueisusedtobondporous, lightweightmaterialsusedincrafts,itis waterbasedandisnon-toxicorhaslow toxicity.It’seasytocleanwithwaterand suitableforusebychildren.

Disadvantages

Thebondisnotverystrong,soits suitableforsmallprojectsthatarenot heavy.Itwillnotbondsmooth,non-porous surfacestogetherandisnotwaterresistant.

Hotglue

Hotglueisathermoplasticadhesivethat comesinsticksandisappliedwitha suitableHotgluegun.Thisisavery versatileglue;itmeltsathightemperature andformsastrongbondasitcoolsand solidifies.

Hotgluecomesindifferentvarietiesdue todifferentpolymersused,itisexcellent atfillingingapsandforuseonbothnonporousandporoussurfaces.

ApplicationsandAdvantages

HotgluecanbeusedtobondStyrofoam, glass,fabrics,paper,plastics,ceramic, wood,andpaper.

Oftenusedinartsandcrafts,tobond booksspines,andboxes.Inadditionto itsversatility,hotgluedriesandcuresfast andisveryconvenient.

Disadvantages

Unfortunately,it’snotheatresistantand won’tbesuitableforareaswithextreme temperatures.

Hotgluedoesn’thandlepressureand weightwellsinceitisn’tstructurally sound.

WoodGlue

TheSupremeCourtofAppealfound that:

•Evenifthecommissioneradvances reasons(suchasmitigating circumstances)thatvalidlysuggest thatdismissalmightnotbe appropriate,thisdoesnotmeanthat thedismissalmustbeoverturnedif thereareotherfactorsthatmilitatein favourofdismissal;

•CCMAcommissionersdonothave thepowertoreplacedismissal decisionsmadebyemployerswith othercorrectiveactionsuchaswritten warnings;

•CCMAcommissionersshouldnot, withoutcompellingreasons,second guessemployerswhohavedecidedto dismissemployees.

Themeaningofthisfindingwasnot thatCCMAarbitratorsareprohibited fromoverturningdismissals.Rather, thedecisionpreventscommissioners fromoverturningdismissalsmerely because,intheiropinion,another sanctioncouldhavebeenfairer.

Instead,ifthearbitratorisgoingtofind thatdismissalwasinappropriate, he/shewillhavetoshowthatthere wasnoobjectivelyrationalbasisfor thesanctionofdismissal.

Whileemployershailedthisdecision asavictorytheConstitutionalCourt overturnedthisjudgementlargely becauseitbelievedthattheemployer hadnotsufficientlytakenintoaccount theemployee’syearsofserviceand thefactthathehad‘notreceived sufficienttrainingincarryingoutthe dutyofsearchingthoseexitingthe gate’.Thisshockingdecisionshows thatarbitratorsdohavethepowerto overturnwell-reasoneddismissal decisionsofemployersandthat employershavetoprotectthemselves bygoingmanyextramilessoastobe abletoproveconclusivelythefairness ofdisciplinaryactiontakenagainst employees.
