The first MLB All-Star Game was a home run

Anticipation is reaching a fever pitch as baseball fans await Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game. On July 15, 2025 at Truist Park in Atlanta, the best players from the National League and the American League will face off in the Midsummer Classic. The All-Star Game is a celebration of the season’s top talent. While the All-Star Game may seem like something that has been cemented in baseball history, the tradition of the Midsummer Classic is less than 100 years old. Here are some fun facts about the inaugural MLB All-Star Game.

• The first All-Star Game was held on July 6, 1933 for a crowd of around 50,000 fans.

• The game took place at Chicago’s Comiskey Park. This was the historic home of the Chicago White Sox from 1910 to 1990, and was often referred to as the “Baseball Palace of the World.” Comiskey was demolished in 1991 to pave the way for a new stadium.

• Arch Ward, a sports editor, was the brainchild behind the MLB All-Star Game. The event was designed to boost interest in baseball during the darkest years of the Great Depression. Attendance at games had plummeted starting in 1930, and the average player’s salary fell. The All-Star Game was an attempt to draw fans back to the game.

• This year marks the return of All-Star players wearing their own team jerseys, a change from custom-designed All-Star jerseys. During the first All-Star Game, the National League wore gray NL uniforms, while the American League wore the home uniform of their respective teams.

• Babe Ruth played in the first All-Star Game. In fact, Ruth hit the first All-Star home run in the bottom of the third inning when he launched a two-run shot.

• Some other players who showcased their talents during the game included Lou Gehrig, Lefty Gomez, Jimmy Foxx, Joe Cronin, Al Simmons, Charlie Gehringer, and Lefty Grove for the American League. The National League featured Bill Hallahan, Gabby Hartnett, Chick Hafey, Carl Hubbell, Pie Traynor, and Chuck Klein.

• The American League won the game 4-2.

• The game’s popularity prompted Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis to establish the MLB All-Star Game as an annual event. The game also set a precedent for similar allstar exhibitions in other sports.

• The first MLB All-Star Game didn’t feature a Home Run Derby. That event was added in 1985 and has undergone some format changes since then. Many of baseball’s most prolific hitters have competed in the Home Run Derby, including Carl Ripken, Jr., Barry Bonds, Ryan Howard, David Ortiz, Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, and Pete Alonso. Teoscar Hernández of the Dodgers won the Home Run Derby in 2024.

Baseball fans will be eager to see who makes headlines this year. With its 92-year history, the MLB All-Star Game is a tradition that has endured and excited fans for nearly a century.

4 unique moments in American history

Americans celebrate the founding of their country every July 4. School children learn that the Second Continental Congress ratified the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, forever changing the world with the establishment of the United States of America.

Since that fateful day in July 1776, many a unique and notable event has occurred in the United States. Some of those events are lesser known than others, and the following are four unique moments in American history.

1. George Washington’s troops are saved from starvation at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777-78. According to the George Washington Presidential Library at Mount Vernon, the Oneida, one of six nations that were part of the Iroquois Confederacy, brought muchneeded food and supplies to Americans at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-78

One Oneida, Polly Cooper, even remained at Valley Forge throughout the winter, when

she served as Washington’s cook and taught troops how to prepare white corn and make it edible. Though they were offered payment for their lifesaving services during this pivotal winter, the Oneidas declined to accept it.

2. Maria Stewart might not be a name that’s well-known by many modern Americans, but she nonetheless is a trailblazer in U.S. history. Stewart was an African American writer and lecturer who spoke before the African-American Female Intelligence Society on April 28,

1832, thus becoming the first American woman on record to address an audience comprised of both men and women and Blacks and whites.

3. Henrietta Wood is awarded restitution for having been enslaved. Wood was born as a slave in Kentucky around 1818, but was ultimately freed as an adult. However, after her emancipation, Wood, living as a free woman in Cincinnati, was kidnapped and sold back into slavery in 1853. Wood lived in slavery until after the American Civil War. In 1869,

Wood filed a lawsuit against her kidnapper, Zebulon Ward, seeking $20,000 in lost wages and damages. A federal court awarded Wood $2,500, which marks the largest known sum ever awarded as restitution for slavery.

4. Social Security numbers are integral to modern American life, but they are not even 100 years old. The first Social Security number was issued to 23-year-old John David Sweeney on December 1, 1936. The Social Security Board, which issued the number, was a byproduct of the Great Depression and then-President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s responses to it.

How Water Affects Your Home

Water leaves its mark on your home. There could be minerals left behind in your drinking water or hard water clogging up your appliances, making your skin itchy and leaving your clothes feeling less than soft. Learn how drinking water filtration and water softening systems can reduce contaminants and the effects of hard water.

Lisa is simply amazing — impeccable sense of timing and the real estate market, so knowledgeable with phenomenal intuition, generous and ethical. She puts her empathic heart and genuine personality into everything she does for her clients. This, combined with knowledge and expertise, is so rare these days.

It is such a huge life change when you are selling your house and buying a new one, often very stressful. I felt so much peace during the entire time Lisa was selling my house, which wasn’t but a little over a month because we received an asking price offer in two days.

Sitting at the closing table after Lisa had just left, one of the staff told me, “Lisa is the best realtor around, she really cares. Other realtors pretend to care, but they are more driven by the money, I see what goes on behind the scenes. Lisa is the real deal.”

Interesting facts about America’s national parks

America’s National Park Service is more than 100 years old. President Woodrow Wilson signed the act that created the NPS on August 25, 1916, and since then the parks have attracted a steady stream of nature lovers who want to take in all the beauty the parks have to offer. National parks are a source of price for hundreds of millions of Americans, and the following are some interesting facts about these special places across North America.

• Acadia National Park in Maine is the oldest national park east of the Mississippi River, tracing its origins to 1916. Landscape architect Charles Eliot and American preservationist George Dorr were influential in the establishment of the park, as was American financier John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who was vital to the construction of a network of carriage roads that ran throughout the park upon its opening.

• Arches National Park is appropriately named. The park, located in eastern Utah, features more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches, including the well-known and widely recognized Delicate Arch.

• Biscayne National Park south of Miami, Florida, is 95 percent water. Perhaps that’s why a half dozen shipwrecks spanning nearly a century have been mapped on the park’s Maritime Heritage Trail.

• Capitol Reef National Park in south-central Utah contains rocks that History.com notes have estimated to be as much as 270 million years old.

• Sea turtles are among the many notable features of Dry Tortugas National Park, which is located roughly 70 miles west of Key West. Accessibility is another notable quirk of the park, which can only be reached via seaplane.

• Glacier Bay National Park in southeast Alaska is covered by 2,000 square miles of glaciers. No roads lead to Glacier Bay National Park, which is typically reached by air or sea travel.

• Great Basin National Park in Nevada features the Lehman Cave system, which began forming 550 million years ago while the area was still submerged in a shallow ocean.

• American fjord fans may think of Norway when seeking these beautiful bodies of water, but they can see some right within the nation’s borders as well. Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska contains numerous coastal fjords that were carved by glaciers.

• The national park system is so expansive it actually extends south of the equator. The National Park of American Samoa is the only national park south of the equator, and even features a World War II gun emplacement.

July Fourth barbecue

The Fourth of July may not be governed by official rules mandating celebrants attend a backyard barbecue before being awed by a nighttime fireworks display, but each of those things features prominently in many Independence Day celebrations. Fireworks are best left to the professionals, but anyone can master the art of grilling delicious burgers and hot dogs.

Traditional burgers are made with ground beef. However, curious grillmasters can explore the many ways to experiment with burgers without sacrificing flavor. This recipe for “Venison Burgers” from “Texas Favorites” (Gibbs Smith) by Jon Bonnell utilizes venison and pork in lieu of beef. The result is a mouthwatering burger worthy of inclusion in any Fourth of July festivities.

Venison Burgers Serves 8

2 pounds venison meat

1⁄2 pound pork shoulder

1⁄2 pound slab bacon

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1⁄2 teaspoon onion powder

Pinch of cayenne pepper

1⁄2 teaspoon garlic powder

2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

2 teaspoons hot sauce

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1⁄2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Optional toppings Bacon

Cheddar cheese Guacamole

Clean the venison well and remove any fat or connective tissue. Cut the venison, pork shoulder and bacon into large chunks. Combine all ingredients together in a large mixing bowl and let marinate for 1 hour in the refrigerator. Grind everything together using the small plate on your grinder. Form into burger patties by hand, and grill or pan-sear. Cook to medium (135 F internal temperature), then remove from the grill and top with your favorite cheese or burger toppings.
