Trivia fans may know that American president Benjamin Harrison, who served from 1889 to 1893, was both preceded and succeeded in office
by Grover Cleveland. But Harrison has another notable distinction on his presidential résumé.
Harrison was the country’s twenty-third president but the first to hire a woman White House staffer upon his selection of Alice Sanger as his presidential secretary on January 2, 1890. History. com suggests Harrison’s appointment of Sanger
might have been an effort to extend an olive branch to the women’s suffrage movement, which was gaining momentum during the time Harrison spent in the White House. Though Sanger was named to the White House staff 135 years ago, the United States has still not seen a woman elected to the office of the president.
After almost two decades of dedicated service in the automotive industry, local veteran service manager Chris Hayden is embarking on an exciting new chapter in his career. February 15-22,
I believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words but of deeds – achievements won by the present and past generations of agriculturists; in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us from the struggles of former years.
I believe that to live and work on a good farm, or to be engaged in other agricultural pursuits, is pleasant as well as challenging; for I know the joys and discomforts of agricultural life and hold an inborn fondness for those associations which, even in hours of discouragement, I cannot deny.
I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others. I believe in my own ability to work efficiently and think clearly, with such knowledge and skill as I can secure, and in the ability of progressive agriculturists to serve our own and the public interest in producing and marketing the product of our toil.
I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining; in the life abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so–for others as well as myself; in less need for charity and more of it when needed; in being happy myself and playing square with those whose happiness depends upon me.
I believe that American agriculture can and will hold true to the best traditions of our national life and that I can exert an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in that inspiring task.
The creed was written by E.M. Tiffany and adopted at the Third National FFA Convention. It was revised at the 38th and 63rd Conventions.
FFA helped me make friends when I moved schools. It’s like a big family that welcomes new members with open arms. FFA is not just for agriculture kids; it’s for everyone and can help kids discover new passions they might not have found in other clubs. It’s a hands-on experience with opportunities to earn community service hours. FFA also encourages kids to explore their passions and teaches them about leadership and responsibility. Not only does it give you the chance to travel, but you can also meet people from all around the state and country at FFA events. -Hattie Hossfeld Tongue River FFA vice president
My name is Kaydence Fulkerson and I am the Tongue River Valley FFA President currently. I am a junior at Tongue River and have been a part of FFA sense Freshman year. I have made a lot of fun memories and amazing experiences. One of my favorite memories is going to Indianapolis, Indiana for Nationals FFA. I got to attend the career fair which had hundreds of colleges and I was able to visit with many of them. I also got to tour Churchill Downs in Kentucky. It was a really cool opportunity that I will never forget. Everything about the trip was just awesome, it was great being able to get out of Wyoming and meet FFA members from around the country
This is Zane Charlson and I am the Tongue River Valley FFA Chapter Reporter. FFA is a great learning opportunity. With all of the projects, competitions, and speaking, FFA is a great opportunity for young adults to get exposed to more “real-world” experiences. I personally think that the public speaking experience is one of the most useful opportunities. Even if you aren’t going to be a public speaker, being able to speak in front of people is a good skill to have.
My name is Brooke Krumm and I am the Tongue River Valley FFA chapter’s secretary. This chapter has given me so many amazing memories and experiences. I have been a part of this chapter since my sophomore year. This has been a great experience for me it has taught me public speaking, and exposed me to so many useful opportunities. One of my favorite experiences was going to state last year.
My name is Kaya Caster and I am from the Tongue River valley FFA. FFA in my opinion has been a confidence-builder for me such as making new friends and speaking out loud to people. My chapter shows leadership in every aspect and cooperation.
My name is Lucianna Raymond, and I am a sophomore at Tongue River High School. This is my first year in FFA and I couldn’t be more glad I joined. FFA provides you with opportunities and teaches you valuable life experiences like teamwork, public speaking, and self-confidence. When working with your CDE teams, you form valuable friendships with your teammates, and this year I went to the Nile for horse judging. Overall, FFA is an amazing club that not only rounds out your resume, but also has lasting positive effects on personal development.

The FFA Wool Judging Contest was a new experience for the John B. Kendrick FFA Chapter this year. The Wool Judging field has become more popular in the state of Wyoming, as Wyoming is one of the biggest sheep producers. Despite our victory of fifth place in the state and 3rd place on the rail, our team faced severe challenges throughout the season. The first challenge was to find an accountable team, this team was Ellie Grover, Lucie Linden, and Brett Oetken, with the help of our coach Ms. Reynolds. The next challenge was to learn the ropes of evaluating a fleece, this consisted of length, fiber diameter, fiber strength, and breed characteristics. All of these added up to how the fleece would place in the class. The final challenge that our team faced was at the state competition which was the day before our school finals. This led to stress on our team however, everyone did very well and was able to pass every final along with the victory of fifth.
This competition taught our team the importance of teamwork, respect, and how to evaluate fleeces. Personally, I enjoyed this competition for many reasons. This was a fresh new opportunity to learn about a staple industry in our state while continuing to sharpen my critical thinking skills through the judging portion of the contest. When I first heard about this contest I honestly had no idea that this was something I could continue to do through college and beyond. However, now competing in this contest, I am aware of the impact this industry has on everyone and how fleece has endless possibilities in our everyday lives.
Overall, the John B. Kendrick FFA Chapter team was successful in more than just the judging field, this proves that FFA is a very important organization that helps grow not only skills but also minds.

What is Agronomy? It is defined as the science involved in both soil and crop production and that is what may come to the mind of many who hear the word “Agronomy.” To me, it means much more than the textbook definition. It is one of the most important CDE’s that an FFA Chapter can offer! During team practices and competitions we are identifying bugs, weeds, crops, seeds, and soil. It is much more than identifying though. We grade grain and hay to determine its quality and if it is safe enough for sale and consumption. The soil grading and judging portion is to determine growing conditions, how well the soil can support crops, and what it needs in order to aid in crop production. Grading soil is definitely one of the team’s favorite activities during competitions! The John B. Kendrick FFA Agronomy team, has placed top six in State over the past two years. It is a tough competition but anybody can do it! Having knowledge in Agronomy, even if it is knowing little to a lot, is very important. Ranchers and farmers highly benefit from this knowledge. They have to understand what is growing in their pastures so their horses and cattle don’t get sick and what their soil condition is so they can plan for crop growth and harvest. Sick livestock and poor crop production does not help to support ranching and farming operations. If one wants to be successful, they must have an understanding of their land, what it is producing, and what they can improve.

Those words and what they have stood for have played a longstanding and vital role in my life. They are the opening sentence of the FFA Creed that I recited by memory as a Greenhand member of my FFA chapter. As a high schooler, I discovered my niche through Agriculture classes and involvement in our FFA chapter. It’s where I found a passion for ag ambassadorship, made lifelong connections and friendships that have enriched my life, and learned valuable leadership and public speaking skills that continue to serve me today.
At the end of my high school career, I went on to be the Wyoming State FFA reporter, and the connections I made and my involvement in serving on this leadership team deepened my love for this incredible youth organization. Eventually, I married my husband, who became the Ag Teacher and FFA Advisor in Meeteetse, Wyoming. As an Ag Teacher’s spouse, I thoroughly enjoyed my ongoing involvement with Ag students and FFA kids. Those memories were as incredible as the ones I made as an FFA member!
Because of everything my husband and I had gained through FFA and how we had seen it benefit students, we felt it was important for our kids to take AG classes and be involved in an FFA chapter once they were in High School. Our older daughter was active in the FFA program in Buffalo, and my husband and I were very involved in the FFA Parent Support Group, where we did a lot of fundraising for the kids to go to leadership camp, National Convention as well as raising scholarship money for numerous students over the years. Our daughter benefited greatly from her years in the school’s ag program, and those benefits continue today as she’s found a career in a field she found a passion for while competing on Environmental and Natural Resources Teams at the state and National Levels.
Through the various ways I have been involved in high school FFA programs, I’ve recognized the outstanding role FFA can play in a student’s life and the limitless opportunities this youth organization affords young people.

The 2024-2025 Officers are Tera Boden (Parliamentarian), Tessa Anderson (Sentinel), Chloe Mauck (Reporter), Ammarie Pierson (Treasurer), Abbie Odegard (Secretary), Ian Andreen (Vice President), and Dellana Michelena (President). Their Adviser is Abigail Mueller. These officers have frequent meetings to ensure the chapter is running smoothly.
The Clear Creek FFA has participated in several community service events such as Highway clean up, Suicide walk, and helping with community dinners throughout the year. They strive to integrate the members with the community by hosting a back-to-school BBQ where family members are welcome to come celebrate the new school year. They help put on the community lunches during the Fall where they grow produce from their garden to create a Farm to Table lunch. Speaking of the Garden. The FFA got a GreenHouse installed this past month and they have an opening ceremony/ ribbon cutting on February 18th. In November the Clear Creek FFA had five members go to the FIRE and CPE conference. The two who participated in the CPE part got to vote on decisions for the state and the other three who went to the FIRE got to learn more leadership skills.
State FFA is approaching and the Clear Creek FFA are working hard every single day to be ready for State. The Wool judging team worked hard during their state competition in January where they had help from Bryce Makenzie. The Ag Mech team is improving day by day with the help of Tyler Terry. They also have a marketing plan team that is determined to do their best and that is shown by how hard they are working. Their sales team is patiently waiting for the item to sell so they can research it and sell it to the best of their ability. They also have a few other teams that are working just as hard. The senior class of Arvada Clearmont High School only has 10 kinds and there are 7 of those kids who are applying for the state FFA degree. This FFA Chapter has been faced with almost every adversity there is but they persevered and have not given up. Being in such a small community, when something affects one person it affects everyone and it’s truly beautiful to watch this chapter come together as one to face different challenges. These kids can handle whatever life throws at them. The Clear Creek FFA is ready for everything and are very excited for what is next to come.
We moved to the Big Horn area when our son was in the 4th grade and were disappointed to find they did not offer Ag classes and there was no FFA Chapter in the Big Horn High School. We assumed that when Kade started High School he would transfer to School District 2, where Sheridan had a vibrant and competitive FFA Chapter. However, after five years in Big Horn, he decided to stay in School District 1 because of the close friendships he had acquired and other opportunities he had here.
After much discussion, we decided that we not only desired for our son to have the opportunity to take Ag classes and become an FFA member in High School, but we also felt that bringing FFA and Agriculture classes back to Big Horn would only serve to benefit the entire student body and community. We wanted other students to discover the opportunities FFA affords young people to experience lifelong leadership skills, find confidence in public speaking and interview abilities, gain positive role models, and explore possible career paths. We wanted this for our son but also for the entire school at Big Horn.
Along with other parents and interested students in the community, we began the process of talking to school administrators, school board members, and the superintendent about the possibility of bringing a High School Ag Program back to Big Horn High School and possibly Middle School. We also worked hard to educate and inform other students and families in the community about the benefits and experiences gained by involvement in an FFA chapter. After two years of these conversations, we are so thrilled that at the January 21st School Board Meeting, there was a unanimous vote to bring Ag classes and an FFA program back after not having it for over 20 years.
Why was this so important to me as a mom of a high school student, a woman involved in agriculture, and a community member of Big Horn? Well, as E.M Tiffany so profoundly stated at the end of the FFA creed: “I believe that American agriculture can and will hold true to the best traditions of our national life and that I can exert an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in that inspiring task.”
An FFA program will be an incredible benefit to our students, our Big Horn Schools, and our community.

Abraham Lincoln is among the most revered figures in American history. Born in Kentucky on February 12, 1809, Lincoln served as the sixteenth president of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. Lincoln was president during the American Civil War, when he led the Union to victory over the Confederacy, an outcome which resulted in the end of slavery in the United States. Though Lincoln’s role during the American Civil War is well-known, there’s much more to the man dubbed “Honest Abe.”
• Abraham Lincoln was six-foot-four, and that size perhaps contributed to one of the more unique honors that was bestowed upon him, albeit posthumously.
As a young man, Lincoln was known for his wrestling skills, and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame notes he suffered just a single recorded defeat in a dozenyear period. That skill and record is why the NWHOF enshrined him in 1992.
• The United States Secret Service performs many functions, but none is more widely recognized than the agency’s role in protecting American political leaders and their families. In a curious twist, the Secret Service was officially established by President Lincoln on April 14, 1865, just hours before he was fatally shot at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. Lincoln fell into a coma after being shot, and died the next morning.
• That Lincoln established an organization that would be tasked with protecting political leaders on the day he was assassinated was not the only odd coincidence to affect the president and his family. Though the precise timeline is uncertain, actor Edwin Booth saved Abraham Lincoln’s son, Robert Todd Lincoln, when the latter accidentally fell onto train tracks in Jersey City, New Jersey. Booth pulled the president’s son up by the coat collar before he could be crushed by a departing train. Despite his act of heroism, Edwin Booth has been overshadowed by his brother, John Wilkes Booth, a fellow actor and the man now remembered as Abraham Lincoln’s assassin.
• The Lincoln Bedroom is among the more notable rooms in the White House.
However, unless he dozed off at his desk, Lincoln never actually slept in the room that bears his name. According to the White House Historical Association, Lincoln used the room as his office and Cabinet Room. In fact, the WHHA notes that the room did not even include the rosewood bed purchased by First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln until it was renovated during the administration of Harry S. Truman in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
• Perhaps no individual in American history has inspired more written works than Abraham Lincoln. The exact figure is unknown, but the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum estimates that more than 18,000 books have been written about America’s sixteenth president.
As Americans celebrate Presidents’ Day this February, they can consider these and many more interesting facts about President Abraham Lincoln.
