Did you know?

A day spent in the great outdoors can expose people to unparalleled beauty and offer the ability to view wildlife not readily encountered elsewhere. The United States has dozens of federally recognized national parks, as well as many other historic sites, scenic trails, national seashores, and national recreation areas. Unique geological features, diverse ecosystems, amazing natural beauty, and refuges for wild animals are located across the United States. Yellowstone National Park was the first national park. A bill designated it as such as when signed into law in 1872 by President Ulysses S. Grant, followed by Mackinac National Park in 1875, which was later decommissioned. California (nine) and Alaska (eight) are home to the most national parks of any states. The newest national parks were added in 2021. They include Weir Farm National Historic Park in Connecticut, Homestead National Park in Nebraska and Jimmy Carter National Historic Park in Georgia. Exploring national parks across the nation can make for an exciting adventure and a relaxing retreat. Visit www.nps.gov for a full list of national parks.

ANSWERS

Pecans add the perfect finishing touch

Pecans can make any recipe better. Whether they add a nutritious crunch to oatmeal, star as the lead ingredient in pecan pie or give cookies that little something extra, pecans elevate the foods they touch. In this recipe “Twice-Baked Sweet Potatoes” from “Simply Scratch” (Avery) by Laurie McNamara, honey-covered pecans are the crowning touch on sweet potatoes, helping to make this side dish one to remember at any special meal.

Twice-Baked Sweet Potatoes (Serves 4)

2 medium sweet potatoes, scrubbed

1 teaspoon olive oil

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 tablespoons pure maple syrup

2 teaspoons chili powder

1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus a pinch

2 tablespoons honey 3⁄4 cup coarsely chopped pecans

Preheat the oven to 400F. Massage the olive oil onto the sweet potatoes and set them on a small baking sheet. Bake for 1 hour or until a knife glides through effortlessly. Let cool

until safe to handle. Keep the oven on.

Halve the sweet potatoes horizontally and carefully scoop out the flesh into a medium bowl. Set the skins aside. Add the butter, maple syrup, chili powder, cinnamon, and 1⁄4 teaspoon of the salt and use a potato masher to mash the filling until smooth.

In a small bowl, combine the honey, pecans, and a pinch of salt.

Place the skins side by side in a small baking dish. Spoon the filling in, dividing it evenly,

and top with the honeyed pecans. Bake for 5 minutes. Serve warm.

How Water Affects Your Home

Water leaves its mark on your home. There could be minerals left behind in your drinking water or hard water clogging up your appliances, making your skin itchy and leaving your clothes feeling less than soft.

how drinking water filtration and water softening systems can reduce contaminants and the effects of hard water.

Softeners are available for sale or rent.

Lisa is simply amazing — impeccable sense of timing and the real estate market, so knowledgeable with phenomenal intuition, generous and ethical. She puts her empathic heart and genuine personality into everything she does for her clients. This, combined with knowledge and expertise, is so rare these days.

It is such a huge life change when you are selling your house and buying a new one, often very stressful. I felt so much peace during the entire time Lisa was selling my house, which wasn’t but a little over a month because we received an asking price offer in two days.

Sitting at the closing table after Lisa had just left, one of the staff told me, “Lisa is the best realtor around, she really cares. Other realtors pretend to care, but they are more driven by the money, I see what goes on behind the scenes. Lisa is the real deal.”
