My name is Bev Leichtnam and I’m running for City Council to bring fresh ideas, new energy, and a focus on what matters most to us.

The first order of government is protection of its people. I am committed to maintaining a secure environment by prioritizing funding for our Police, Fire and Water Treatment departments to ensure everyone’s safety.

I’m committed to making our government more accessible and transparent. I believe in fostering more public engagement and better communication from City staff.

I support initiatives that benefit our Seniors, such as Meals on Wheels and Goose Creek Transit. Our seniors have contributed so much to our society and it’s crucial that we honor and support them.

I promote local business growth. Every dollar spent goes towards making our city more vibrant, supporting our neighbors, and preserving the character that makes our community special.

I recommend projects that maintain roads, bridges and water/sewer lines. Regular upkeep prevents costly, larger-scale repairs, saving taxpayers money.

Thank you for your vote in November.

I am a veteran and a long-time
Republican. There comes a time when one

My most fervent point is Donald J Trump is not a conservative and never has been. Trump only cares about Trump. There are two kinds of people who support Trump: those who stand to make millions of dollars from his election and those who do not actively seek truth. We all want to be liked and included in our social group. At this juncture there are more important considerations-- mainly the survival of our government and its vital institutions. There are many areas of concern when it comes to Trump. Republicans who know the facts are not voting for him. The following are some revealing documents and statements set forth by staunch Republicans and others:

1.Statement of endorsement of Kamala Harris by The National Security Leaders of America: “We are former public servants who swore an oath to the Constitution. Many of us risk our lives for it. We are retired generals, admirals, senior non-commissioned officers, ambassadors, and senior civilian national security leaders. We are Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. We are loyal to the ideals of our nation-like freedom, democracy, and the rule of law-not to any one individual or party.” The full document can be found on-line along with the names and titles of the over 700 signatories. https://www.nsl4a.org/nsl4a-announcements/nsl4a-endorsement-harris

2) “Over 100 Ex-GOP Officials Endorse Harris”. This letter released by the group of Reagan, Bush, McCain & Romney Alumni for Harris. Signed by 111 former officials from those administrations as well as ex-Trump staffers and some former Republican members of Congress. https://www.forbes.com/sites/mollybohannon/2024/09/18/over-100-ex-gop-officials-endorse-harris-heres-the-full-list/

3) A letter signed by more than 200 Republicans who said, “Another four years under Trump would bring real hurt to everyday people and weaken our sacred institutions.” From the body of the letter it states; “We firmly oppose the election of Donald Trump. As President, he promoted daily chaos in government, praised our enemies and undermine our allies, politicized the military and disparaged our veterans, prioritized his personal interests, and betrayed our values, democracy, and this country’s founding documents. In our view the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 and defending those who committed it, he had violated his oath of office. As former Vice President Pence has said “anyone who puts himself over the Constitution should never be President of the United States.” https://www.nsl4a.org/nsl4a-announcements/nsl4a-endorsement-harris

4) John Kelly, four star general and the longest-serving White House chief of staff for Trump, set the record straight with confirmations of a number of damning stories about statements Trump made behind closed doors. He attacked US service members and veterans. . “What can I add that has not already been said?” Kelly stated, when asked if he wanted to weigh in on his former boss in light of recent comments made by other former Trump officials, “A person that thinks those who defend their country in uniform, or are shot down or seriously wounded in combat, or spend years being tortured as POWs are all ‘suckers’ because ‘there is nothing in it for them.’ Trump did not want to be seen in the presence of military amputees because ‘it doesn’t look good for me.’ Trump demonstrated open contempt for a Gold Star family – for all Gold Star families – on TV during the 2016 campaign, and rants that our most precious heroes who gave their lives in America’s defense are ‘losers’ and wouldn’t even visit military graves in France. “A person who is not truthful regarding his position on the protection of unborn life, on women, on minorities, on evangelical Christians, on Jews, on working men and women,” Kelly continued on Trump. “A person that has no idea what America stands for and has no idea what America is all about. A person who cavalierly suggests that a selfless warrior who has served his country for 40 years in peacetime and war should lose his life for treason – in expectation that someone will take action. A person who admires autocrats and murderous dictators. A person that has nothing but contempt for our democratic institutions, our Constitution, and the rule of law. “There is nothing more that can be said,” Kelly concluded. “God help us.” : https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/02/politics/john-kelly-donald-trump-us-service-members-veterans/index.html

5) Mark Milley, appointed by Trump as yet another chairman of the joint Chiefs of staff, is quoted in Bob Woodward’s new book, War: “Do you realize, do you see what this man is?” This man (Trump) is the most dangerous person ever. I had suspicions when I talk to you about his mental decline and so forth, but now I realize he’s a total fascist. He is now the most dangerous person to this country…He is a fascist to the core…He is a want-to-be dictator.”

6) “Hundreds allege Donald Trump does not pay his bills.” Donald Trump casts himself as the protector of workers and jobs, but USA Today Network investigation found hundreds of people – carpenters, dishwashers, painters, even his own lawyers – who say he did not pay them for their work. A story about a general contractor who Trump stiffed for about 2 million dollars ended up selling all his assets then giving a list of subcontractors to his accountant for payment before committing suicide. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/hundreds-claim-donald-trump-doesn-t-pay-his-bills-n589261

A few questions to consider:

Is Trump a Christian? Is he Pro-Life? When asked if he had ever been a party to an abortion, he would not answer. Up until he needed the pro-life vote, he claimed to be pro-choice. At the time his current wife was giving birth he was having an affair with a porn star and a Playboy bunny.************************ “It’s OK to walk in the changing room of teenage girls if you own the pageant,” Trump said.

Is Trump anti-immigrant? He married one and used his lawyers to get her and her family through the legal system into America. He has also employed many undocumented people at his golf clubs and used them on construction sites. As President, he blocked the most conservative border bill in 20 years because he wanted immigration as a campaign issue.

Does Trump care deeply about you? When COVID hit the U.S. Trump said it was a hoax. He hawked unproven treatments, such as ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine to the American people. Simultaneously, he was secretly sending shipments of expensive, U.S. taxpayer paid, Covid testing equipment to Putin. It has been reported that he has also had secret phone calls to Putin since Jan 2021.

Is Trump a successful businessman? He has had numerous bankruptcies. In the mid-1990s he claimed a billion dollars in losses on his taxes. His bankruptcies and failures include, Trump Airlines, Trump Beverages, Trump Game, Trump’s team and the entire USFL football league, Trump Magazine, Trump Mortgage, Trump Steaks, Trump Travel, Trump University (where he paid a settlement of 25 million dollars for fraud), and Trump Casinos which lost 4.8 billion dollars. He walked away from these without paying his bills.

He is now selling God Bless the USA Bibles for $60. They are made--like almost everything else he sells--in Hangzhou, China. They cost Trump less than $3 and are of inferior quality. The Trump watches are also made in China. He sells them for $600 but his cost is $6. He also sells a Tourbillon style watch for $100,000, also Chinese. You can buy a real one in Switzerland for $6,000. This item is a great way for foreign dictators to put money in Trump’s pocket and avoid US campaign donation laws. And let’s not forget the Trump $2 bill sold for only $29.99.

Does Trump support our military and national security? He has said that Putin and all the other mass murdering dictators are “strong and brilliant.” He stood before the world and said that he trusted Putin more than American security officials. He praised (Dictator) Viktor Orban as an outstanding leader during a national debate. His primary financial source is Russia (stated Don Jr.). Ask any military source to name our most supportive allies in the Iraq war and they will say the Kurds. One call from Erdoğan of Turkey to Trump and the Kurds were abandoned on the battlefield.

Trump clams to be “a stable genius”? Since the start of his second presidential run, one question has quietly but urgently permeated the observations of mental health professionals. What is wrong with him? In the New York Times best seller The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump 27 psychiatrists and mental health professionals expertly assess this topic. Using the DSM diagnostic codes they came to the conclusion that he is a “pathological narcissist”. They explain Trump’s impulsivity in terms of “an unbridled and extreme present hedonism”. They feel they have a “duty to warn” the American public. Read the book and or review it on You Tube.

We need perspective. The good people of rural America do not think they are being lied to for profit. But that is what is happening. Rupert Murdoch, with net worth 20+ billion, Sean Hannity (his contract $36 million a year) et al, got that money by telling you things that will keep you tuned in to their networks. Murdoch paid a 787 million dollar settlement to hide Trumps lies about the election. There are other settlements that are not public, but hey, that is the cost of doing (dirty) business. “Fox news host Sean Hannity was “privately disgusted” with Trump’s actions following his loss in 2020, despite showing steadfast support on air, But was scared to lose viewers” Rupert Murdoch from court filing under oath.

If you wish to be informed by knowledgeable, UNBIASED? people who have ethics, may I suggest PBS News Hour, Anthony Scaramucci, and or Midas Touch on You Tube.

This election is a turning point for America. As a patriotic American, each and every one of us must search for the facts. This is not a junior high football game. This is serious.

Filtration for Your Home’s Water

Standard filtration often leaves behind contaminants in your water that if you knew were there, you wouldn’t want in your home. Depending on what’s in your water, you may need additional filtration or even a combination of water treatments to make sure it’s as clean as can be. There are two main ways to connect a filter to your home’s water—whole home systems and point of use systems.

A magical dessert for Halloween gatherings

Sweet treats are on display come Halloween. People hosting Halloween parties or bringing items over to others’ homes for the holiday may need to scare up some new ideas for dessert.

Chocolate never goes out of style and is right at home on Halloween. This recipe for “Black Magic Cake,” courtesy of The Food Network, is decadently rich. Don’t let all that chocolate frighten you. Drizzle as much melted marshmallow as necessary to brighten up the flavor. Turn into a mummy face or transform the top of the cake into a spiderweb instead.

Black Magic Cake

8 to 10 servings

2⁄3 cup vegetable oil, plus more for greasing the baking pans

1 cup Dutch-process cocoa powder (or any cocoa powder if on hand)

1 cup boiling water

2 cups granulated sugar

1-3⁄4 cups all-purpose flour (see cook’s note)

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon fine salt

1 cup whole milk

2 large eggs

1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

Filling and Frosting:

11⁄2 cups heavy cream

3⁄4 cup Dutch-process cocoa powder, sifted

8 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped

1 teaspoon espresso powder

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Pinch fine salt

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1⁄3cup confectioners’ sugar, sifted

Decoration:

2 cups mini marshmallows (about 4 ounces)

Cooking spray

1or more candy spiders or two candy eyes for decorating

Country Bounty, October 29, 2024, page 18

For the cake: Position an oven rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 350 F. Line the bottom of two 9-inch round cake pans with parchment and crease the parchment and the sides of the pans with oil. Stir together the cocoa powder and boiling water in a small bowl and let sit to bloom for 5 minutes (this step intensifies the chocolate flavor in the cake).

Whisk together the granulated sugar, flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Whisk together the bloomed cocoa, oil, milk, eggs, and vanilla in a medium bowl. Pour the cocoa mixture into the sugar mixture and stir until smooth (the batter will be thin). Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake until the cakes bounce back when pressed in the middle and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 30 to 40 minutes. Let cool completely in the pans on a rack.

For the filling and frosting: Heat the cream in a double boiler over low heat, whisking occasionally, until it begins to steam. Whisk in the cocoa powder, chocolate, espresso powder, vanilla, and salt until the mixture is smooth, about 2 minutes. Whisk in the butter until melted. Whisk in the confectioners’ sugar until incorporated. Let the frosting cool completely. To assemble: Put one cake, bottomside up, on a serving plate or cake stand. Spread about 1 cup of the frosting over the top but not all the way down the side. Top with the other cake, bottom-side up, and frost the top and sides with the remaining frosting. For the spider web or mummy decoration: Microwave the marshmallows in a microwave-safe medium bowl until they swell and are soft enough to stir, about 1 minute. Let sit a few minutes until cool enough to touch. Spray your hands with cooking spray. For a spider web, pick up a tablespoon-sized blob of the melted marshmallow and stretch it over and around the cake; repeat so that the strings of marshmallow crisscross one another in many directions. Continue until you have what looks like a spiderweb. For a mummy, stretch the marshmallow so that all the strings on the top of the cake run in the same direction, leaving a small gap between strings for the mummy’s eyes to peak out. Garnish with a candy spider or several candy spiders for the web cake or candy eyes for the mummy cake.

Cook’s note: The candy directions are a nice touch, but the cake will be fun and delicious without them as well. When measuring flour, spoon it into a dry measuring cup and level off the excess.

Semi-homemade tip: Purchase a premade chocolate cake and use the decoration to make the mummy or spiderweb only.
