Extracurricular activities can help students be more well-rounded and present opportunities to make friends and beef up college applications. Extracurricular activities are associated with a range of positive outcomes for students, including improved academic performance, higher academic aspirations, greater self-esteem, better social skills, and reduced incidences of risky behaviors. The U.S. Census Bureau indicates children are now participating in more extracurricular activities than they did in previous decades. A 2014 study from researchers at the University of Florida asked more than 13,000 tenth graders from a wide range of backgrounds about extracurricular activity participation. Teens who participated in the study indicated they engaged in two to three extracurriculars and spent about five hours per week on them. Those participation rates may seem low to modern students, many of whom may be driven by a desire to be admitted to notable universities. A 2025 study from Pioneer Academics indicated students who participated in four extracurricular activities had 30 percent admission rates at elite universities, while admission rates among applicants with two extracurricular activities was 15 percent. That higher admission rate is notable, but parents and students should note findings from the University of Florida regarding moderate involvement in activities and the benefits of such participation on students. At very high levels of involvement, which amounted to more than 14 hours a week, teens’ academic well-being declined. The Urban Institute says 83 percent of children age six to 17 participate in at least one extracurricular activity. Rates of participation may be growing, but families should be sure that there is balance so students are not overwhelmed.

People often love to explore the uncanny and unexplained as Halloween draws near. One way to do so is to visit some of the purportedly haunted places around the world that also happen to be spectacularly beautiful. Not only is this a great way to get in some travel time, it also can elicit thrills,
as one never knows what to expect when visiting the following locales.
Casa Loma, Toronto, Canada
This gothic revival castle was completed in 1914. It is built with secret passageways and hidden storage areas. Legend has it that ghosts have been spotted on the property for years. The estate is transformed into a haunted house for Halloween each year.
Winchester Mystery House, San Jose, California
When Winchester Rifles heiress Sarah Winchester lost her husband and infant daughter, a psychic medium told her it was payback by the spirits of all of the people harmed by Winchester rifles. She was told to build
a house large enough to accommodate all of the angry spirits. The Winchester Mystery House has 160 rooms, secret passageways, upside-down columns, and staircases to nowhere to confuse spirits. Visitors have experienced all sorts of unexplained phenomena within the walls of the house.
Raynham Hall, Norfolk, England
Within this English hall, a mysterious “Brown Lady,” rumored to be Lady Dorothy Walpole, supposedly roams. She was captured on film in the December 1936 edition of Country Life.
Driskill Hotel, Austin, Texas
This historic landmark was opened in 1886 by cattle baron Jesse Driskill. It has a
well-known history of paranormal activity following the deaths of guests, which include two honeymooning women who took their own lives in the same room 20 years apart.
Larnach Castle, Dunedin, New Zealand
The lone castle in New Zealand is a beautiful building set amid misty gardens. It is rumored that the castle’s builder, a politician named William Larnach, witnessed the death of his daughter and two wives in the house before taking his own life on the property. Larnach’s ghost supposedly watches over the castle and is responsible for paranormal events.
Poveglia, Venice, Italy
The island of Poveglia is a short ride from Venice, and
used to be a quarantine zone for people suffering from the plague. The island later housed a psychiatric hospital. Many people attest to the island being a prime spot for paranormal activity.
One if by Land, Two if by Sea, New York City
Located in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan, this restaurant once was the carriage house of Aaron Burr. The eatery supposedly is haunted by upwards of 20 ghosts, including Burr and his daughter, Theodosia.
Port Arthur, Australia
Port Arthur is filled with reports of paranormal spectacles. The spot originally was a penal colony in the 19th century where prisoners endured mandatory church services and solitary confinement to correct poor behavior.
Rose Hall, Montego Bay, Jamaica
Rose Hall once was the residence of plantation owner John Palmer and his English-born wife, Annie. She poisoned him to take control of the plantation and fortune. Annie was known as The White Witch by slaves on the property because she practiced voodoo and tortured workers, never mind killing her second and third husbands as well. It is said The White Witch, who is encased in a stone tomb on the property, still roams the grounds as a spirit and terrorizes guests. Haunted locales dot the global landscape. Many are beautiful to behold, even while they put a scare in visitors.

Opportunities to host abound between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, and savvy hosts know how useful an expansive culinary repertoire can be during a time of year when it’s common to enjoy home cooked meals with loved ones. Simple but flavorful meals are a holiday host’s best friend. Such meals, which include the following recipe for “Stuffed Shells With
Spinach and Ricotta” from Lines+Angles, give hosts more time to mingle but still ensure a delicious dish makes its way to the table come dinnertime.

ed water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook per package directions until al dente. Rinse pasta in cold water to stop cooking process and drain well.

Did you know?

Screen usage is a fact of modern life, and it’s an issue parents find themselves navigating on a daily basis. Though even especially
young children use devices like tablets, the desire for screens may grow considerably once kids enter elementary school. Many schools now utilize tablets and laptops in the classroom. While studies have found screens can foster cognitive development in young children, the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry urg-
es parents of school-aged children to limit activities that include screens. Excessive screen use can lead to a host of negative outcomes, including sleep disturbances, poor academic performance, obesity, and poor self-image and body issues, among other problems. The AACAP does not offer specific recommendations for school-aged kids regarding
daily screen usage, but the organization notes children age five and younger should be limited to no more than one hour per day. A reasonable increase on that recommendation may not adversely affect school-aged kids, though parents are advised to encourage healthy screen habits and turn screens off 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime.

Baking cookies is a holiday tradition. Although there are many different cookie recipes out there, no cookie-baking session is complete without traditional sugar cookies. Sugar cookies are ideal for cutting and decorating, which makes them great selections for holiday baking sessions. This recipe for “Vanilla Bean Sugar Cookies” from “Butter, Flour, Sugar, Joy” (Sourcebooks) by Danielle Kartes is perfect for family baking sessions this holiday season.
Yields two dozen cookies
Cookies
11⁄2 cups confectioners’ sugar
1 cup butter, softened
2 tablespoons cream cheese,
softened
1 egg
Seeds scraped from one vanilla bean
1teaspoon almond extract
1teaspoon salt
21⁄2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
Cream Cheese Frosting
1 cup butter, softened
1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 pinch salt
4 to 6 cups confectioners’ sugar
In a stand mixer, with a hand mixer, or by hand, cream the sugar, butter, and cream cheese together in a large mixing bowl until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes; add the egg, vanilla, almond extract, and salt; mix well.
Add the flour and cream of tartar and mix by hand until it just comes together. Refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes, but overnight is best.
When you are ready to bake, preheat oven to 350 F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Roll the
dough on a floured surface into a 1⁄4-inch thick rough circle and use your favorite cookie cutter to cut out shapes.
Place them on the prepared baking sheet, about 2 inches apart. Bake 12 to 14 minutes, until set.
Continue this process until you’ve used up all the dough. Cool cookies on sheets of foil and frost once completely cool. These cookies are fine to eat right away, but Kartes feels they get their signature touch when frosted and left out overnight. The author does not put them away until the next morning. For the frosting, cream the butter, cream cheese, almond extract, and salt until light and fluffy; slowly add the confectioners’ sugar. Kartes likes hers less sweet, so she uses 4 cups of confectioners’ sugar, but you may use up to 6 cups. Feel free to color small bowls of the frosting and decorate the cookies with sprinkles or tiny candies.

Many transformations occur during the month of October.
Leaves begin to turn various shades of orange and red, while the weather gets decidedly cooler. In the meantime, neighborhoods across the country begin to look quite different, with many homes decked out in the garish garb of Halloween.
The National Retail Federation together with Prosper Insights & Analytics reports that decorating one’s home for Halloween is the second most popular way to celebrate the holiday. Only purchasing and sharing candy beats out home decor. Individuals spend billions collectively on Halloween each year, and one of the ways they can have some frightening fun is by transforming a regular, unassuming home into a haunted house. There are certain necessities to turn a an otherwise typical home into a suddenly spooky abode.
• Scene setter: Start with a scene setter if you would like to decorate both inside and out. Scene setters are plastic or paper backdrops that can
be tacked up on walls to make a house look completely different, particularly under low light. A scene setter is an investment of time and money, but it can be reused each year and really make a room take on a new look quickly.
• Lawn graveyard: Visitors to the home who have to step through a graveyard will know there are more scares ahead. It’s relatively easy to make your own grave markers from wood or foam. If you’re not handy, you can purchase them from a Halloween supply store. Disturb the earth by the markers to make visitors believe each grave is fresh. A bony hand sticking out of the dirt or some wilted flowers placed by the graves also can set the scene.
• Floating candles: Simulate the look of levitating candles with an easy craft. Take toilet paper or paper towel cardboard tubes and use hot glue on the top to make it look like beads of dripping wax. Paint the tubes with white chalk paint, as this type of paint is thick and covers easily. Glue a bat-
tery-powered tea light to the top for the wick. Poke a hole through both sides of the tube and thread some fishing line through. Use your mounting device of choice to attach the fishing line to the ceiling indoors or outside to hang each candle. When the lights are dim, it’s very difficult to see the fishing line and the candles will appear to be floating.
• Haunted archway: Make an arch using PVC pipes, and thread jack-o’-lanterns or papier mâche heads or masks through to create an ominous arch that greets visitors.
• Handprints: Use windowsafe paint to create bloody handprints on the inside of windows. This is a design touch that will enhance both the interior and exterior of the windows.
• Fog machine: Use a fog machine to spread a creepy mist where you need it, whether on a front porch or indoors. Haunted houses come together with various design touches that are easy to execute.
