Honoring Christ by serving the needs of children and families
A Note From Bob -
Push& Pull One of the keys to the successful life changes for the boys and girls at Sheridan House is the Push and Pull concept. We push each child to work hard at everything they attempt; but we also encourage them to pull someone along with them in their pursuit of excellence. Christ modeled that. He pulled the disciplines along the road with Him. He could have come and easily done all He came to do alone. By pulling twelve men along that road with Him, all but one reached His created purpose for them.
Back-to-School Wrap Up
Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone – especially to those in the family of faith. Galatians 6:10
“Sheridan House is a single mother’s dream come true!!” It’s not about working hard and passing by those around you. You should work hard and encourage those God has put around you. Don’t just walk away from a party you shouldn’t be attending; pull others away as you leave. This summer ended with a great illustration. The boys’ homes went to North Carolina to climb a mountain. For the majority of our boys, it was not only the first time they had ever been out of the state of Florida, but it was also their first time climbing a six-thousand foot mountain. As you look at the pictures of this camping trip, you are viewing amazing triumph. We pushed the boys to get to the top, but the boys didn’t do it alone. They pulled each other along the way. It was a triumph of loving your neighbor as yourself. To those who helped make this trip possible, thank you. Thank you for helping to raise tomorrow’s leaders. Serving Him,
Those were Sandee’s grateful words as she wrote back to say how much the Back-to-School event meant to her and to her daughter. “Gigi is elated with her new supplies for the school year.” Over 300 single moms and their children enjoyed a variety of ministry stations at this event. The children were thrilled to receive cool haircuts offered by professional stylists and barbers who generously donated their time and talents. A room full of amazing volunteers welcomed the 700+ kids as they picked out just the right backpack! And to top it all off, face-painting and airbrushed tattoos put a smile on each face! We want to offer our thanks to all who gave, participated, served, and prayed for this event. Among them are Flanigan’s Restaurants, Odebrecht Construction Co., American Express, Brown & Brown, Aetna, and many of our partnering churches and individuals. Yes, we provided the necessary supplies for the kids to start the school year off right; but more importantly, we offered hope to these families in Jesus’ name.
This summer the boys who live at Sheridan House participated in “Man Up” the summer enrichment program designed specifically to enhance their personal growth. The academic, athletic, spiritual, and recreational activities each challenge the boys to stretch themselves mentally, physically, and spiritually. Through this, they all learned the importance of encouraging one another. The life lesson: It’s not about just me. It’s about knowing WE can succeed!
When Shane and Jonny arrived to volunteer, the boys welcomed them, but they were a bit confused. Typically, when boys enter our residential program they are angry that they have to be there. Then, they work hard to get out. So, one would assume that they would never want to come back. However, both Shane and Jonny graduated from our program over a year ago and they were eager to come back this summer. After a full morning of basketball fundamentals, Jonny sat down for lunch in Boys’ Home 3 and with a smile on his face said, “I like being here.” They all discussed how important it is to look at their time at Sheridan House as an opportunity, to finish the program, and then keep up with the behavioral changes at home and school. The new boys were especially encouraged by his testimony.
We are so proud of the young men Shane and Jonny are becoming.
Shane also encouraged them as he assisted them in Frisbee golf and as they made their wooden cars in the workshop. His quiet, yet strong presence offered the boys a calm consistency throughout the summer and they all appreciated his honesty. We are so proud of the young men Shane and Jonny are becoming. Join us in continuing to pray for them and the boys in our residential program as they each continue on their journey to becoming who God created them to be.
