CEO Message

Tennis fans have a good reason to sit inside in this heat and I hope those who watched the Australian Open have enjoyed it.

We are settling back in to 2019 and looking forward to another year of Village life.

While last year was huge in so many ways, 2019 may be a little quieter – at least on the surface.

Underneath, the legs keep paddling hard as we prepare for a Royal Commission into Aged Care and begin our preparations for refurbishment work at Rodney Park.

The Royal Commission is consuming much of my time at present as we must lodge documentation on

I know that Vern and Shirley Marven have just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and I am sure that there are others who have enjoyed special celebrations of some kind and we wish them all the best.

Joan O’Keeffe has just moved from No. 101 into Banksia and we hope she is very happy there.

Our new committee is having its first meeting on Monday, 14th January.

Peter, our popular maintenance man, is on long service leave and George is doing a fine job in his place. The gardeners are to be congratulated for working in this very hot weather.

Exercise Groups, Bingo, Indoor Bowls, card games, pool, a Happy Hour on Thursdays, two Social Nights with an evening meal on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays and a Church service on the 4th Sunday of each month.

Men’s Shed Last year ended with a bang with our annual break-up party and clean-up of the Shed. The men enjoyed their two weeks off during the Christmas and New Year break and have returned with some fresh ideas for the Shed.

Ian was visited at the Break-up Party by one of Santa’s Christmas Elves.

Last year we ended up receiving an early gift from the old Waratah Lodge. As everyone knows, Waratah will soon be made anew, so we were gifted their tables and chairs to replace our tired old ones at the Shed.

This gave the guys another job of stripping the old chairs for scrap metal.

Suzie’s Snippets from Tarcoola Hi everyone, and a Happy New Year to you all.

It seems that Christmas was months ago now and yet it really is only four weeks into the new year.

It certainly has been a hot start to the year.

Our Maculata Salon is up and running very nicely. The hairdressers have settled and our clients are feeling much more positive about their new home.

We are in the salon on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, opening at 9.00am until 3.00pm, or later if required.

Please call in, even if only for a chat. The kettle's ready to boil!

My Granddaughter Alana spent a few hours in the salon with Mandy and myself, much to the clients’ delight.

You never know but we may have a budding hairdresser in the wings.

I would avoid doing any heavy pruning at this time of year.

We had the privilege of attending the Berry Street graduation (below). To hear these fine students speak of their journey at Berry Street and their personal achievements and rewards and to where they stand in the community leaves us breathless.

Edwards were original members of the Tarcoola Social Committee, now known as the Tarcoola ILU Support Group.

This sprightly looking crew got together recently at the 90th birthday of Dot Altadonna.

The Tarcoola Friendship Group was formed in the mid 1970s, and just prior to the Tarcoola Activity Centre opening, Peg Edwards was interviewed by Stella Barber for history book of Shepparton Villages, The Passion and the Dream.

In the interview, Peg said: “The single-bedroom flats started a Friendships Group. Once a week we had a Crazy Whist at the hostel and we provided supper. So we got to know everybody; that was about all in the early days.

Then of course when the Activity Centre was built . . . when that opened up we played cards, indoor bowls, sausage sizzles and we had a lot of activities.�

Remembrance Day was held indoors in the Activity Centre as the day was too hot to be outside. It was a great day and thanks must go to the tireless volunteers from Legacy who organise

Our December meal was a BYO and share picnic on the lawn. There were some anxious moments as the weather was so hot but we relocated to the Activity Centre and a good night was had by all; delicious food and good company.

Croquet lessons are offered each Thursday morning at 10.00 am on the green. Contact Joyce or just turn up and have a go.

Bus outings have been hampered by the high temperatures but we have managed to get to Big W for some retail therapy and visited the Shepparton RSL for their first seniors’ melodies this year (below).

We look forward to getting some new volunteers this year and hope to be able to expand our activities and bus trips to keep us busy and out and about in the community.

Afternoon Teas, Happy Hour and Social gettogethers bring with them smiles, fun and laughter as we share stories and the local gossip around the place. Recently we invited the New Hakea Residents neighbours over for morning tea and a chat.

We’ve christened the new oven with our cooking group by baking a Humming Bird Cake. We look forward to some more tasty snacks in the future; and doesn’t Kevin look great in his apron?
