01 -Task 1SAMPLING RETAIL Collecting Inventories

Conventional architectural and urban design strategies generally view the city as static, when in fact the urban environment is a hybrid architectural rypes and forms.The studio will examine the relationship between the architectural and typological object and the urban field. The first task is aimed to collect visual index of sampled items extracted from around our subject site. Begin with collecting elements for further exploration of the the form. The site we visit is one of the traditional melbourne retail laneway - Degrave Street. By collecting inventories form Degrave Street, we proposed a undereground system across Degrave Street and Flinder Street Station. And typological shopping space on Degrave Street represents typical Melbourne Retail Store.

02 -Task 2CONCEPTUAL MAPPING Site Impression After visiting the site of this semester- Drewery Lane, I collected samples and inventories around the site. Using the elements to describe the site and give a abroad impression of the site.

03 -Task 3EXPLORING FORMS Physical composition

Selecting the digital models from site inventories and make physical composition with the inventories. By rotating and overlaying the components, I have discovered some interesting forms. Some stairs and circulations are leading to nowhere. Instead of simply overlaying the cubes, I choose to make more interaction between elements. Choosing more “L“ shapes store to make interaction space.

Using the components from previous inventories. Using one store component and one ornament component to create a new catogory. The design is formed by the new inventories by rotating them. The idea is to create a sense of Melboourne civic in the design.

MIDTERM DESIGN PROPOSAL


06 -Midterm DesignIDEA FACTORY Combination of past tasks Midterm Design is based on the previous tasks and it is combined the previous two design task 4 and 5. The circulation is a combination of research of Melbourne laneway and traditional arcade. The form is generated from the collection of inventories. By combinating two old inventories to create new catologue, the form of the design is created. The idea of factory is inspired by Melbourne’s local design market. By introducing the new program of design market , I am trying to create an environment that providing oppurtunities for local in dividual artists and saler.

Section

Circulation Diagram: The grand stair ascends four stories to terminate in a glazed double-high student lounge overlooking the city. The atrium involves grand stairs and forms an amphitheater.

Stairs and Lifts: The stairs and lifts are the main circulation in this design. Especially the stairs provide social public spaces for students.

Week 9 Idea and Elements Reflection The elements created according to the program is quite isolated and not really connected with each other. Creating the inventories is a right direction, however, the relation of each elements are important. Each program should have consistant features and geometry. The program should be carefully considered and the narrative should be created as well.

Week 11 Presentation and Atmosphere Reflection The elements created according to the program is quite isolated and not really connected with each other. The element and design is quite rigid. The elements are playful and interesting, However, it should be more types of elements in the design. The red and white colour looks more like a fire station not a shopping center. The colour pallette should be consider carefully later. Colour should be more and more younger and playful.

Design Issue: a. Shopping Mall now has pretty simple and tedious circulation. b. Shopping mode are generally same from different shopping mall. c. Shopping Mall has less connection with local individual designers and sellers. Mostly the stores are occupied big brands with high rent. d. Shopping Mall are more for gathering with friends, taking children out and experiencing new products instead of simple buying. e. Offline shopping is gradually replaced by online shopping.

Design Intent: a. Involving idea of “design market” to create flexible space. Sellers and products are changing according to different season and different theme. Involving more local designers and sellers in CBD area. b. Include more restaurants, café, children’s playground and experience store instead of traditional brand stores. c. Involving the changing into the design. Give potential to future adjustment and modifying. d. The project after 20 years: Some of the stores will gradually change into an online shopping delivering and collecting spot for collecting and store products that people bought online and help them to collect and deliver.


07 -FINAL Design-

FUTURE SHOPPING TYPOLOGY

Narrative: The design is based on the idea of involving local designers and individual retailers, moreover proposing a future possibility for what shopping mall will turn into in a few decades. The trend of the shopping mode is changing. The programs attract people are not the traditional stores. Café, restaurants, bars, children’s playground and experiencing stores are the programs that attracts people, which should be emphasis in the designing. Customers are there in shopping for experiencing new products and gathering with friends. Instead of shopping store by store and experiencing the repetitive circulation. The design aimed to create a new typology of shopping system involving the ideas of “design market”, “experience store” and “online shopping”. With the impact of internet and technology, the enthusiasm of consumerism is reaching to a next level. The design is like a factory and machine to celebrate this age of consumerism.
