While florists may sell roses by the dozen, fashion's favorite flower in the 20th Century was the orchid. At the turn of the century, women were still adorning themselves in the feathers and fur that had been popular in the late 1800s, but in the 1920s, shortly after World War I, fashionforward flappers started pinning exotic orchids to their otherwise boyish shift dresses.

Orchids became a popular fashion accessory for both women and men in the 1920s and they continued to be popular throughout the following decades of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, when no elegant evening ensemble was complete without a Cattleya orchid corsage.

Fashion styles have come and gone and this very large, frilly flower has been relegated to a pot on the windowsill for most of the year, but it still makes its annual appearance on Mother’s Day. Shell Point Life is published monthly for the residents of Shell Point Retirement Community.

The Orchid House is one of Shell Point’s oldest and most enjoyed amenities. Established soon after Shell Point opened, this facility became a popular spot to visit for both residents and visitors alike. But it’s easy to forget that the Orchid House is open year round and residents often enjoy rediscovering this botanical treasure.

Exploring the Exotic The Orchid House offers a quiet spot to pause and reflect, and to take in the dramatic color and variety of the flowering plants that are on constant display. The facility houses 480 different types of the exotic species and 1,000 plants line the rustic wooden shelves and platforms in the cool greenhouse.

A team of volunteers keep the greenhouse humming and five volunteers are on site every day to ensure that the orchids are well-tended.

Although the prime viewing season for orchids is January through May, this dedicated team of volunteers makes sure that they purchase summer orchids as well so that the visitors in the summer, “don’t get lonely” and have something new and delightful to enjoy.

In addition to the greenhouse, the building also features a separate potting room, which sometimes serves as a hospital for orchids that need Orchids are among the most diverse of the flowering plant families, with over 25,000 species. Another 60,000 hybrids and varieties have been produced by horticulturalists — and about 800 new ones are added each year.

A Visit from a Naughty Hungry Bunny Everyone remembers the story of the mischievous Peter Rabbit and his forbidden trips into Mister McGregor’s garden. What many residents of Shell Point don’t know is that we recently had our very own version of Peter Rabbit at the Shell Point Orchid House. It actually took a visitor to remove the hungry bunny, which managed to eat dozens of the tropical delicacies during his unwelcome three-day stay. “One thing is for sure,” joked one of the visitors to the Orchid House, “that bunny had expensive taste!”

One of the things that make a visit to this spot so appealing is its lovely location in the park on The Island at Shell Point. The park features a large number of towering Cuban Laurel trees that provide a shady canopy over the carpet of thick grass, meandering sidewalks, and benches overlooking the quiet canal and mangroves beyond.

to be repotted or treated for various maladies. But no matter how sickly an orchid might become, the Orchid House volunteers don’t worry because when that occurs they can always call in the Orchid Doctor.

Perhaps the most well-known of the Orchid House volunteer team is Dr. John Williams of Harbor Court who has been caring for the orchids at Shell Point since November of 1991 when he first stepped foot in the Orchid House.

Dr. Williams retired and moved to Shell Point from his medical practice in Danville, Pennsylvania. As a radiologist, Dr. Williams spent his career studying and diagnosing illnesses in his patients. Upon retirement, he directed his scientific inquisitiveness to the orchids in the Orchid House and soon taught himself what he needed to know to care for the exotic, but sensitive, plants. Dr. Williams shared his knowledge with other orchid enthusiasts and soon many residents were enjoying this horticultural hobby.

One of the most positive benefits derived from Dr. William's scientific approach at the Orchid House is the journal that he created documenting each of the orchids in the collection and describing its features and care. Looking back, he remembers marveling at the beauty of the orchids, and noticing that the beautiful plants were not documented. Dr. Williams is humble about his work and doesn't claim that it has great significance, but other members of the orchid group disagree, saying that the manual is a wealth of information and helps them to identify and care for the various plants when Dr. Williams is not around.

He decided to get the process started by creating log books. Dr. William’s scientific approach at the Orchid House resulted in the journal that he created documenting each of the orchids in the collection and describing its features and care.

Each page of the handwritten manual features the information about a single orchid plant. Since all of the orchids are in pots, they are frequently moved around for various reasons. By numbering each orchid and cataloguing the information in the manual, the volunteers are able to keep tabs on the progress of each plant and its stages of growth. In addition to the numbering system, Dr. Williams often includes a close-up photograph of the orchid and adds it to the page of notes for easier identification. Today, there are several log books that list the name of each orchid, where it came from, when it arrived, and who received it.

According to Dr. Williams, “In order to grow an orchid, you have to think like an orchid. Orchids are accustomed to growing on trees, living on bugs, and being exposed to the elements. So, naturally, potting an orchid and burying their roots can be detrimental to their survival. Learning to grow them is an art.”

“Every orchid is different,” he continued. “Some thrive in an indoor environment while others flourish outside.”

Growers know the times to expect blooms, the amount of water needed, and the scents will vary.

It seems that growing the perfect orchid can be quite challenging, but fortunately for Shell Point and the dedicated team of enthusiastic volunteers at the Orchid House, the Doctor is in!

Which Stitch?

Many types of quilting exist today.

The two most widely used are hand-quilting and machine quilting.

Hand Quilting uses a needle and thread to sew a running stitch across the entire area to be quilted. This binds the layers together. A quilting frame or hoop is often used to assist in holding the piece being quilted. One running stitch at a time is called a stab stitch.

A rocking stitch is where the quilter has one hand, usually with a finger wearing a thimble, on top of the quilt, while the other hand is located beneath the piece to push the needle back up.

Loading the needle involves doing four or more stitches before pulling the needle through the cloth.

Just as the name implies, machine quilting is the process of using a home sewing machine or a Longarm machine to sew the layers together.

With the home sewing machine the layers are tacked together before quilting.

This involves laying the top, batting and backing out on a flat surface and either pinning or tacking the layers together.

Longarm Quilting involves placing the layers to be quilted on a special frame.

The frame has bars on which the layers are rolled, keeping these together without the need for basting or pinning. These frames are used with a professional sewing machine mounted on a platform. The platform rides along tracks so that the machine can be moved across the layers on the frame. A Longarm machine is moved across the fabric. In contrast, the fabric is moved through a home sewing machine.

Sarajane and Richard Maass (Rosemont) both participated in the annual “quilting challenge” which challenges participants to come up with any creative design they can think of using an identical piece of fabric. Entries included everything from traditional quilted wall hangings to doll clothes. Sarajane submitted a beautifully appliquéd wall hanging while Richard created an interesting three-dimensional flower pot.

The most obvious use for quilts was as bed coverings and quilts could be made with an interior layer of insulation to provide much-needed warmth during harsh New England or frontier winters. Lighter versions without any insulation or batting were then referred to as summer quilts.

Quilts were often a labor of love and were given as gifts and passed down from generation to generation. This holds true today.

Sarajane Maass of Rosemont, a retired 3rd grade teacher, described the baby quilt she entered into this year’s show as an example of the type of quilt she likes to make for each of her six grandchildren. “I like to create something soft and warm for each new baby,” she said. “Each of these quilts is a true gift of love.

There were over 450 visitors at this year's quilt show, and they were all treated to an amazing array of these labors of love and displays of creative talent.

According to Vera Graham (Turban) around 40 people participated in this year's show. Vera is Shell Point's “quilter extraordinaire” and has inspired dozens of fellow residents to take up the craft. Vera was on-

hand with other club members at the show proudly showing off their work, helping to greet guests, answering questions about the various quilts on display, and hopefully raising awareness and interest in this beautiful, creative art form at Shell Point.

“This is just another amazing example of the many talented people who live at Shell Point,” said Dot Beard of Cellana. “I am just fascinated by their ability and I come to enjoy it every year.

I wouldn’t miss it!”

New Transportation Services Directory Volunteer Driver Program Comes to the End of the Road B

For the past forty years, friends and neighbors helping each other has been the hallmark of the volunteer program at Shell Point.

In the early days, when transportation services provided by the community were limited, a service program evolved to help residents who no longer drive. This Volunteer Drivers Program provided resident volunteers who would drive their neighbors to scheduled medical appointments, airport runs, shopping, or errands in town.

As Shell Point has added transportation services, usage of the Volunteer Drivers Program has declined and due to the rising cost of gasoline and increasing concerns from Shell Point’s management team, the volunteer drivers themselves, and Shell Point’s insurance carrier, it was decided that an official Volunteer Driving Service would no longer be promoted by Shell Point, effective May 1. In preparation for the phase-out of this program, Dianne Morton, transportation manager,

did an in-depth analysis of the transportation needs of the community and made some changes to the scheduled service provided

by Shell Point’s transportation vehicles.

According to Morton, Shell Point has plenty of room on both the shopping and medical buses to support additional residents throughout the community. “By making adjustments to our bus schedule we were able to improve the scheduled service for our residents,” she said. “We are very fortunate to have the resources that Shell Point has made available to provide these services.”

“In April we expanded the Shell Point Medical Bus Service to five days per week which will assist us in meeting the needs of transporting residents to off-site medical appointments,” she said. Morton also noted that the addition of several physicians offering specialized medical services at the Arbor has also reduced the need for trips outside the community to receive medical services.

For shopping needs, the Shell Point

Shopping Bus offers a daily schedule, Monday through Friday. There is also a personal shopping service available on Tuesdays and Fridays, which can be accessed by calling the Island Service Desk at 454-2282. Shell Point Home Care is available by calling 454-2242 to provide companion service when needed.

Meet Rick and Beth Drummond Two Retirees Who Can’t Retire

Though Shell Point is called a retirement community, you might think otherwise if you started adding up all the work that residents continue to do!

Many continue to make contributions in their field of expertise as well as in new endeavors. Rick and Beth Drummond, though not Shell Point residents (Beth is daughter to King’s Crown resident, Marie Ziemer), fall into that same group.

Last year they retired from the Christian & Missionary Alliance after 40 years of ministry in Cambodia. But in their hearts they wanted to continue working in Cambodia for a few more years.

Rick and Beth were invited to join International Teams USA in August 2007 and returned to their beloved Cambodia in November. They settled in the town of Siem Reap and began working with Vietnamese immigrants. As it is a new work, they started with nothing and find it quite a challenge but that experience is not new for the Drummonds. They began the same kind of work among Vietnamese refugees in Phnom Penh in 1997.

The first task has been to determine where the Vietnamese live and what they are doing for a living. They will then begin

to share the hope of Christ with them and develop small groups. What they have found so far is poverty, filth and a lack of hope. Rick and Beth are especially moved by the many children (ages 11-14) who have never gone to school to learn either Vietnamese or Cambodian. This of course limits what the children will be able to do in the future. For the young girls this means a real likelihood they will end up in the sex trade. The Drummonds would like to develop schools to teach literacy as well as technical skills.

Another aspect of their work is to visit villages along the Tonle Sap Lake. A Vietnamese Christian worker built a churchboat at one of the floating villages and the Drummonds participated in a beautiful Christmas service aboard the boat. “We believe it is right for us to be here and get something started.” Beth declares. They are committed to staying for two years and trusting God for some younger folks to take over the work. Beth will be sharing about this work on Wednesday, May 21 at 10:15 a.m. in the Village Church Hospitality Room as part of the Women’s Ministries Global Outreach Program. esidents know from personal experience, that the Village Church and Shell Point Retirement Community offer a wide variety of outstanding performances each year as part of the Season of Praise Concert Series, the Fine and Performing Arts Concert Series, and numerous community-wide events such as the Annual Gala or holiday celebrations.

Performances have included everything from Academy Award-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch, to the dazzling virtuosity of Roger Williams, to the crystal clear harmonies of the St. Olaf Choir, and the list of performers goes on and on.

Harbor Court Wraps Up Bocce Ball Season Harbor Court residents have just wrapped up their bocce ball season. Every Wednesday afternoon they would meet and play as many as five games. Up to 142 residents have attended the weekly game to play, spectate, and cheer on their neighbors.

Bocce ball is a league sport and it’s a great reason to spend some time outdoors during the cooler winter and spring months. They look forward to starting up play again in the fall when the Northerners return for the winter season.

Bocce ball is comprised of 8 large balls (4 green, 4 red) and a smaller target ball called a “pallino.”

THE HISTORY OF SHELL POINT

In last month’s chapter of the Shell Point history we met the first residents of the community, Reverend Ralph and Emilie Torgerson, former missionaries of Africa. When the Torgersons moved into Shell Point, the community was in a primitive state and construction was just beginning on the infrastructure and the first building of garden apartments, Tellidora. We pick up our story this month with the construction and development of the Village Center.

CHAPTER FIVE A VILLAGE EMERGES The years 1968 and 1969 were a whirlwind of construction activity as Shell Point Village began to take shape. Access to the remote community had been problematic and the easiest way to reach the community was by boat. In April that first year, Shell Point Boulevard opened in a primitive state with two double lanes of shell-covered, sand roadway.

Later, a steady parade of dump trucks had to haul additional sand and fill dirt in before the road could be blacktopped.

That month also saw the reshaping of the lagoon in the center of the island. This area had been chosen to serve as the hub of activity for the community, and numerous buildings were underway to form the Village Center. These buildings would include a variety of functions to enhance resident life, and to provide services for the convenience of the residents. The size of the Village

Center was an ambitious undertaking in light of the limited start-up funds available to the community.

But perhaps the most momentous occasion that year occurred on April 30, when Reverend Ted J. Spier, southeastern district superintendent for the Christian and Missionary Alliance, turned over seven spades of soil at the dedication ceremony to commemorate the beginning of construction of the Shell Point Village Church.

Reverend Spier spoke briefly about the total Shell Point Village facility, its purpose and its goals. “Far from resembling an old folks home,” said Reverend Spier, “Shell Point Village will offer a vibrant Christian retirement program dominated by the spiritual influence of The Christian and Missionary Alliance Church.”

“Here,” he continued, “those of retirement age can enjoy Christian fellowship and have the blessed assurance of the care program provided by the Shell Point Village plan.”

In his closing prayer, Reverend Spier said, “When the Lord gives his people a dream or vision, you can rest assured that He will help make it a reality. Such is the vision of the complete Shell Point Village program, which is now well on its way to fulfillment.”

Reverend Donald Shepson, Pastor of the Fort Myers Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, joined in the event by reading Scripture.

With a number of new residents now living in the Tellidora apartments, Shell Point Steelwork being completed for Village Center, 1969 Village held its first official social and prayer meeting in the courtyard on October 3. The Torgersons now had new friends and neighbors and in November and December, the growing group of residents celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas with a pot-luck meal in the sunny courtyard of Tellidora. This became a popular annual custom. Church services were also held at Tellidora in anticipation of the completion of the church.

As spring turned into summer, the community continued to buzz with activity. A sewer plant was in the early stages of construction, and the pilings for the church were being driven. Additionally, the maintenance building was completed, a TV antenna was installed, and the seawall was constructed at the riverfront.

1969 signified another year of tremendous growth and construction at Shell Point. The Village Center was completed, and the amphitheater was built overlooking the water of the seawalled lagoon. In April, construction began on the guest house and the third apartment building, Macoma.

That summer was spent grading the grounds around Tellidora and the exterior of the building was completed on July 10, 1968, with the final inspection of the first 50 apartments.

On November 15, 1969, the management, residents, and honored guests gathered at the Village Center to dedicate the new buildings and set a plaque in the ground to commemorate the event.

Self Defense Class a Hit Among the Ladies

Several residents attended another interesting Academy class, the SAFE (Self Defense Awareness and Familiarization Exchange) program provided by the National Self Defense Institute, and presented by the Crime Pevention Specialist of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Library Ends Successful Fund Drive The envelopes kept coming in during the month of March, and the more than 70 volunteers who work at the Shell Point Library are rejoicing. They are grateful to the countless residents who generously contributed to the 2008 library fund drive. With the community’s support, the library exceeded expectations and raised over $27,000! The solicitation, which concluded earlier this spring, will make it possible for the library volunteer committees to continue their purchases of quality print and non-print items for the facility located at the Resident Activity Center on the Island, and also at sites in King’s Crown and the

Arbor.

The 2008 donations confirm how much Shell Point residents value the books, DVD’s, CD’s, audio books, newspapers and financial publications available for borrowing. The library is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m.

Summer Highlights The summer semester promises ample opportunity to stay in and be cool while being educated, informed, and entertained.

For The Love of Learning This summer, For The Love of Learning, offers a continuation of the discussion about energy that began last semester with a presentation on Recycling given by resident Bill Skinner (Harbor Court), and Bridget Kantor, from the Lee County Solid Waste Department.

Professor Adrian Kerr will return this semester to offer a series of three classes on Egypt.

The summer session gives all interested residents another opportunity to learn the newest brain stimulating puzzle, Sudoku from Ed Crane (Parkwood), or you may choose to take a new class on Sign Language. The arts will abound as Doug MacGregor, Editorial Cartoonist for the News-Press will teach a course on Thinking Creatively, Bud Kent (Macoma) will help us learn to visualize music and Herb Sklar (Eagles Preserve) will guide us through the Art of the Self Portrait. Ruth Deuber (Periwinkle) will share the art of cooking in her tasty presentation of A Quick and Delicious Summer Meal.

Academy On The Go Do you want to go out and do some , exploring?

Shell Point Program Coordinator, Elizabeth Brown, will take you out and about every other week this summer on interesting educational field trips for adults.

The session will launch with a trip to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, May 8, where residents will have the opportunity to meet with Community Outreach Director, Martha Powell, to learn more about what happens at this increasingly busy facility where their goal is to keep paradise safe.

There will be time for Q & A. Then the program will take a musical spin with an excursion to the Sarasota Opera House on Wednesday, June 4, to explore the 1920’s vaudeville house and cover the history of the Opera House. A special guided tour will take you backstage to discover the technical areas of costumes, sets, lighting and props.

To get back to nature and the history of this wonderful southern coast, we will attend the Calusa Native Technology Seminar on Wednesday, June 18, to discover how those before us lived on this very soil.

For a community involvement twist, we will take an up-close look at what the Salvation Army provides for the local community. We will be taking a tour of The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Lodge in downtown Fort Myers for a “Behind the Red Shield Tour” on Friday, July 11.

The summer session of the On the Go Academy will finish off with a tour of the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery. Bob is a former Captiva resident and favorite local artist. Director Ron Bishop will guide residents through this modern and contemporary gallery at Edison College on Wednesday, July 23.

Another interesting number is 7; which is the number of Harbor Court residents who participated.

This was the highest number of residents from any single court in the show. And 20 percent of the participants in this year’s

The Passport Plan allows you to purchase a meal at up to a 30% discount, with the flexibility to use it at all Shell Point dining venues, including King’s Crown and the Arbor. The plan allows you to prepay a set dollar amount and simply use the card to pay for meals until the dollar balance is gone, while saving a certain percentage off each meal.

Passport Plans are available for use for a four month time period, beginning at the date of purchase with no additional extension of time. At the end of four months, or when the balance expires, which ever comes first, the Passport Plans will be automatically renewed unless you request cancellation of the plan. If it becomes apparent that an unused balance will be remaining on a Passport Plan you may receive a maximum credit of up to 20% of the original plan value (at the discounted percentage of

the plan) towards the purchase of a new plan. This must occur before expiration of the plan. If you have signed up for automatic renewal this credit will be implemented at the time of renewal.

Four levels of meal plan discounts are available, ranging from $212.50 to $700. The $700 plan is the best deal, as you get a 30% savings on meals, snacks, drinks and desserts.

Passport Plans can be purchased through the Shell Point Accounting Department by calling Iris Guerra-LaLani, Resident Billing, at 454-2173.

Forms are also at all dining locations and at both resident service desks.

Completed forms are forwarded to accounting where the charge for the meal plan amount you have chosen is then placed on your monthly statement.

Mother’s Day Brunch Sunday, May 11 Crystal Room

Sunday, May 11, is the most important day of the year for honoring mothers. Shell Point will be recognizing all ladies at a beautiful Mother’s Day Brunch in the Crystal Dining Room. The menu will offer the Crystal’s homemade cream of asparagus soup; an extensive salad bar with warm rolls and assorted brunch items, including Eggs Benedict, omelets, and waffles. The main entrée choices will include a juicy prime rib carving station, chicken marsala, and stuffed fillet of sole.

A variety of delicious sides will accompany the entrees such as whipped potatoes, yellow squash casserole and pasta primavera with herbed olive oil and farfel pasta. And don’t forget dessert! The large dessert buffet will feature a variety of delicious pastries, cakes, and pies.

In honor of this special occasion, all ladies will receive a complimentary flower. The Crystal Dining Room will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the price of the buffet is $17.76 per person. The entire Crystal Room staff invites you and your family to enjoy a memorable Mother’s Day brunch.

A Better You… Determine Your Face Shape B

Determining your correct face shape is the foundation in selecting the right hair style. This can be difficult to do for yourself as we tend to look at ourselves less objectively than others do. It may be helpful and fun to do this exercise with a friend. Be sure to pull all the hair back away from your face to view the full shape of your face before you begin.

Let’s explore the determining features that distinguish the different face shapes so that you will have the foundation to determine the correct style for you. To determine face shape, we look at the width of the face at the forehead, cheekbone and chin. Decide which area is the widest and the proportion of the three segments of the face.

The shape of the chin is also important. Is it rounded, square or pointed? Is the chin or forehead wider than the other areas or the same? Review the descriptions of the various face shapes to help determine your own face shape.

Once have determined your face shape you can move on to the next step in determining the right hair style for you.

The right style for you will soften or diminish the areas of width and add width or volume to the narrow areas. The right style creates the illusion of an oval face shape, and evens out uneven proportions.

Oval Lucky you!

Oval is deemed the “ideal” face shape due to its balanced proportions. The cheekbone area is an average width and may be slightly wider than the chin and forehead area. The chin and forehead area are about the same width.

The jaw line is rounded.

Square This face shape has a strong jaw line which can project confidence or stubbornness, depending on how you look at it. The jaw line or chin is often equal or greater in width to the cheekbone area.

Round This face shape often gets the “cute” label. This face shape would be wider than average with a round chin.

The width of the chin and forehead areas would be about the same.

Oblong Those with long faces often have an elongated neck which can be glamorous. This face shape would be longer than average with a less than average width in most cases. The chin area would be more pointy or narrow.

By identifying the shape of your face your stylist can assist you in selecting the right hair style.

Diamond Like the real jewels, diamond faces are the least common. This face shape would be widest at the cheekbone area. The forehead and chin would be the least narrow and about the same width.

Heart A classic heart shape may also have a widow’s peak.

The heart shape has a wide forehead and cheekbone area with a narrow chin.

This shape is sometimes called an inverted pear shape.

Pear The Pear and heart shapes are relatively common.

The width is at the jaw line or chin area with a narrow forehead. The width of the face is average to above average.

Attention nature lovers and flower fanatics, it’s that time of year again!

Spring has sprung and your favorite floras will be displaying their beautiful blooms.

The sights will be absolutely spectacular!

When you pass by Tellidora, Macoma, Periwinkle, and the Medical Center, look for the Yellow Tabebuia Tree (Tabebuia Caraiba). This beautiful tree, also known as the Golden Trumpet Tree, will have you gazing in awe at its full bloom of gorgeous yellow flowers. The bloom may be shortlived, but it is truly a vision.

You will be amazed by the budding Jacaranda Tree (Jacaranda Mimosifolia).

The stunning blue-purple blossoms engulf the mature tree found in the lawn of Coquina across from the mid-rise buildings.

Fragrant blossoms are arriving on the Frangipania (Plumeria Rubra). This tree can be found in a variety of colors throughout Shell Point. If you are in the neighborhoods of Tellidora, Macoma, Royal Bonnet, Cellana, or the employee cafeteria, take a look at the new leaves and flowers popping up on this tropical tree.

Hibiscus lovers will be happy to admire the heavy, colorful blooms appearing on the specimens found along the canal behind the Village Church. Geraniums, Impatients, and Begonias are also beginning to show their true colors this season.

It seems like every season brings a new reason to get out and enjoy the beautiful nature around Shell Point. And spring is definitely proving that it is ready for the staring role!

It might surprise you to know that Shell Point has our own “Top Gun”, and although he doesn’t have a charismatic “call sign”, and he firmly remains earthbound at all times, Scott Herron has accomplished what few others in landscaping have.

Coming to Shell Point from the state of Michigan, Scott joined the Landscape Management Team last year as a Grounds Keeper. It was clear from the start that Scott was ambitious and he quickly progressed in his career to become a department Crew Leader.

Determined to learn all of the plants in his new environment, Scott began studying, and passed his first exam — he was on his way

to becoming a Certified Florida Horticulture Pro. In a strenuous three hour test, Scott demonstrated his knowledge of plants, shrubs, and other aspects of Florida horticulture like plant taxonomy, plant biology, pest control, and techniques for proper fertilization.

However, still wanting more, Scott set his sights higher — on becoming a Certified Florida Landscape Technician. This requires a serious commitment and a

different skill sets, which relate directly to the grounds work he performs at Shell Point everyday.

These tasks included the use of a surveyor’s transit to establish landscape grades, proper operation of large power equipment, irrigation clock timer programming and irrigation repair, proper techniques of tree staking, and the installation of landscape plants from a landscape design drawing.

Scott passed his test to

high degree of confidence.

The exam is an intensive twelve-hour-long test, where skills are demonstrated to judges, who are industry leading owners of landscape installation and maintenance companies. Like “Top Gun”, these pros expect excellence, and each task is scrutinized to ensure proper horticultural practices are followed.

become the very first Florida Certified Landscape Technician in Lee County, and one of only 117 that were able to pass the test in the State of Florida making him the “best of the best”.

Please join me in congratulating Scott on his accomplishment and wish him luck in his next challenge to become a State of Florida licensed pesticide applicator.

Very Entertaining Staged Reading of The Robin Hood Caper In this fun rendition of Fred Carmichael’s The Robin Hood Caper, the story is about four senior citizens who have a group called Charities Anonymous. At their annual meeting, in Richard Collins’ nephew’s home (Richard is one of the four seniors), they discover a surprising project to take on – to save his nephews’ small town newspaper.

Their other “project” is to rid the town of Mayor Ratner, and his cronie Warren Coates. They have all been in prison (the four seniors), but they have reformed their ways, and now they take from the rich and give to the poor.

In the end they are succesful in saving the newspaper business and running the crooked Mayor out of town.

Shell Point’s Own Theater presented this play – their tenth play to date – to a large, appreciative audience in the Church Auditorium on April 10.

A Memorable Evening with the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors

The Village Church auditorium was filled with both new and familiar jazz sounds that left the audience cheering. The US Army Jazz Ambassadors took the stage before a crowd of nearly 1,000 residents and guests on Monday, April 14. Under the direction of Chief Warrant Officer Gordon K. Kippola, the band shared familiar tunes such as “It Had to Be You,” “Blue Moon,” and “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.”

The audience soon learned that the talents of the Jazz Ambassadors went beyond simply playing music, as they were treated to a number of pieces arranged or written by band members. SGM Darryl Brenzel’s “Cosita #1” was especially enjoyable.

A highlight of the program came after three beautifully sung numbers by Master Sergeant Marva Lewis. The Director invited Resort Services Manager, Mary Franklin, onto the stage and presented her with a framed photo of the group.

“This was a memorable evening and we look forward to hosting other Armed Forces bands in the future,” said Franklin.

The Ambassadors closed the show with a toe-tapping “Visit to New Orleans” melody, a salute to Armed Forces members past and present, and a moving rendition of America the Beautiful. After receiving a standing ovation they shared an encore presentation of Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood.” This was one concert that won’t soon be forgotten.
