2025
STORM NAMES

This year’s hurricane guide is designed to help you stay informed and prepared for the season ahead. It provides essential factors to consider and updates on Shell Point’s plans. With this knowledge, you can best prepare your personal hurricane plan and be ready to navigate the season with confidence and peace of mind.
Having a predetermined plan in place allows for thoughtful preparation, consideration of contingencies, and a greater level of readiness when an evacuation becomes necessary. Independent Living residents are responsible for their own storm preparedness, evacuation plan, and personal safety. We encourage all residents to take proactive steps to stay ready throughout the season.
Make a plan for where you will park your vehicles during a storm. If you choose to leave automobiles and golf carts on site, they must stay in their designated parking spaces. Electric cars should be moved off-campus for safety. Consider arranging to park at a friend’s home or a commercial lot that allows extended parking. For structural reasons, parking on Shell Point ramps is not permitted, and vehicles left there will be towed. Additionally, The Island Parking Garage will serve as a shelter during the storm, making parking unavailable. Any vehicles left in The Island Garage will be towed.
Stay informed by attending the Shell Point Hurricane Seminar on May 19, 2025, at 11 a.m. at The Village Church. The Shell Point Hurricane Management Team and consulting meteorologist Dave Roberts will provide important updates and insights. We will also review key information outlined in this guide. A recording of the seminar will be available afterward at ShellPoint.org/Storm.
A detailed Shell Point hurricane plan serves as a guideline in the event of a weather-related emergency. Elements of the plan will be activated based on forecast wind speeds, storm surge potential, guidance from Shell Point’s consulting meteorologist, and directives from Lee County Emergency Management. Circumstances of the storm and the time available for staff to perform tasks may dictate changes in the plan, including the sequencing of the plan and which tasks are completed.
Shell Point is located in Lee County Evacuation Zone A. When Shell Point or Lee County orders an evacuation for our community, residents are required to leave their residences. Do not put yourself at risk by remaining in your Independent Living unit during a mandatory evacuation. Staying behind may result in injury or death, as you will be without access to emergency and support services.
In light of the increasing potential for rapidly intensifying storms, Shell Point will require evacuation for all hurricanes forecast to impact our community, beginning at Category 1.
Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing, and approved Independent Living residents may shelter at the Larsen Health Center with one care partner. The facility is equipped with a generator and will provide food, water, and chairs or cots. Portable oxygen tanks should be used during transport to and from the Larsen Health Center. Throughout the shelter stay, efforts will be made to accommodate your personal oxygen concentrators.
A link to the Health Shelter Application will be featured in the News at The Point email delivered on May 22, 2025, and will be available on Wellzesta in the Documents/Healthcare section. It is each resident’s responsibility to complete and submit the digital application by June 6, 2025 in order to be considered for sheltering at the Larsen Health Center. If you need assistance completing it, please contact the Healthy Living Coordination Department.
All submitted applications will be reviewed, and residents will be informed whether or not they are approved for health sheltering. If your medical condition changes after submitting your application, it is your responsibility to inform the Healthy Living team. Residents approved for the Health Shelter must be able to care for themselves or bring someone who can assist them throughout their stay.
Courtesy transportation to both shelters will be provided. Residents are responsible for making their way to the designated central transportation pick-up locations. The transportation schedule will be shared through multiple channels, such as email, court representatives, or Shell Point TV. Collapsible walkers are permitted on buses, but other items should be limited to essentials that can be easily carried and placed on your lap.
Make sure your carry-on tote is tagged with your name and address. Include a two-week supply of medications, personal hygiene items, and essential medical equipment and supplies. A refrigerator will be available at both shelters to house self-administered medications requiring refrigeration. Medication must be clearly labeled with the resident’s name. Be sure to pack phones and chargers, and non-perishable food if you have dietary restrictions.
