Dr. Robert Mehrberg, Physiatrist

A

t The Larsen Pavilion, we recognize and value the important role that our providers play in delivering quality care to each of our residents.

C o n s e q u e n t l y, an opportunity has been identified that will enhance clinical capabilities by focusing on pain management for short term rehabilitative services.

Shell Point is pleased to announce the new addition of Dr. Robert Mehrberg, MD as a contracted physiatrist.

According to the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, physiatrists typically treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, bones, nerves, ligaments, joints, muscles and tendons.

A board-certified physiatrist, he is certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation as well as electrodiagnostic medicine. Also board-certified in pain medicine, Dr. Mehrberg is a member of the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine, the American Academy of Physical

Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the Association of Academic Physiatrists.

Throughout his medical career, Dr. Mehrberg has lectured, written or co-authored numerous articles, abstracts, presentations and publications concerned with the treatment and well-being of rehabilitation patients.

Dr. Mehrberg will provide routine services on a weekly basis at the Larsen Pavilion for short term rehabilitative residents to diagnose and treat pain; restore maximum function lost through injury, illness or disabling conditions; treat the whole person, not just the problem area; and provide successful treatments without surgery.

“I am excited to be able to provide rehabilitation and pain management for residents recovering from illness or injuries in the Larsen Pavilion skilled nursing center, and I look forward to working closely with the alreadyestablished team,” said Dr. Mehrberg.

Auxiliary Dining Companions:

Much Needed, Much Appreciated!

M

eal times have always been a special time – a time to gather, relax, share the day’s events and, most importantly, nourish the body. It’s a special time for Larsen Pavilion residents, too.

Every day, at the lunch and dinner hour in the second floor dining room, folks in blue Auxiliary jackets appear and these Dining Companions go to work. Many residing on that floor require some sort of assistance during meals.

It may be as simple as helping to open cartons of milk and packages of condiments, or as complex as assisting with feeding someone their entire meal.

Each Pavilion Auxiliary member who wishes to become a Dining Companion not only attends the annual orientation and training classes provided by Resort Services, but they also have additional, specialized training for their area of volunteer service which is taught by a rehab therapist at the Pavilion.

Shell Point is so thankful for the dedicated group of Pavilion Auxiliary volunteers who sacrifice their own meal times to spend the hours helping Pavilion residents.

Hats off to Rickie Coleman

(Cameo), in particular, who is a long-time chairperson of the Dinner Dining Companions group. Her dedication to the residents she assists and volunteers she guides shines through every volunteer shift. She will be joined by Alice Wertz (The Estuary), the new chair of the Lunch Dining Companions.

Together, Rickie and Alice can help their fellow dining companions feel confident that they have all the information and tools needed to fulfill their volunteer roles.

Thursday, September 20 Schilling Dining Room in the Larsen Pavilion

It’s time to take a culinary road trip! Explore the lively, flavor-rich swampland of Louisiana from the comfort of the Schilling Dining Room.

All Pavilion residents and their guests are welcome to partake in this regional dining experience. The cost is $10.99 for Shell Point residents and $11.65 for guests (includes 6% tax).

Swamp Party festivities will take place on all floors, regardless of whether you choose to eat at the Schilling Dining Room or to dine in the comfort of your own room. Reservations for the Schilling Dining Room must be made by Friday, September 14 by calling the Activities department at calling 415-5445.

Soaking Up the Summer Season

W

hat would summer be without carnivals, backyard games, balloons, ice cream and, of course, watermelon? Well, Larsen Pavilion residents certainly didn’t want to find out, so the Activities team made sure residents could enjoy them all!

Residents reminisced about summers past, played good old-fashioned backyard and carnival games such as horseshoes, enjoyed novelty ice cream, and visited with Too Tall Tori.

Many also enjoyed sampling some freshly cut watermelon. This summer fruit could be smelled all throughout the skilled nursing apartments and had visitors wondering where to find it – but don’t worry, everyone who made it to the dining room received a piece!

Counting My Blessings

T

hey say aging is not for sissies, but we have much to be grateful for.

Many of us came for the healthcare.

We have great doctors and nurses onsite, specialists visiting and educational programs. The Legacy Foundation is also great resource bringing in outside financial experts for presentations.

There are numerous opportunities provided to meet other residents. I have enjoyed exercise classes with trainers

who provide healthy workouts at the Island Fitness Center and the LifeQuest Aquatic Center. My wife is an artist and has many friends from the painting and drawing classes.

These are just a few things I appreciate here at Shell Point. Give thanks for any of these or some of your own.

The greatest gift is eternal life each of us can have by accepting Jesus Christ as our personal savior!
