JUNE 2019 BUSINESS CONNECTIONS June “Chamber Connections” Luncheon to feature update from 58INC. purpose is to advance economic prosperity and business health through a collaborative partnership among stakeholders focused on targeted initiatives and business recruitment to assure a robust economy in Shelby County, Alabama. The primary focus is balanced job growth in the commercial, retail, and industrial sectors.

The organization serves as the lead for industrial, commercial, and retail recruitment, retention and workforce

readiness initiatives within all of Shelby County, Alabama and its municipalities. 58 INC. is the the conduit to increase the economic vitality of Shelby County by working closely with various communities, corporate representatives, local government officials, business owners, private developers, chambers of commerce, and land-use planning officials to bring desired economic investment to all communities in Shelby County.

The Chamber’s June Connections Luncheon is scheduled for June 6 and will feature an economic development update on Shelby County from 58INC. The luncheon program will be held June 6 at the First Baptist Church in Columbiana.

Doors open at 11:00AM for business networking and fellowship and the program will conclude by 1:00PM. The cost to attend the luncheon is $15.

June “Community Luncheon” to feature comments from Bruno Event Team Mark your calendars for an informative presentation in June at the Chamber’s “Community Luncheon,” hosted by the Tourism & Recreation Work Group. The Bruno Event team will share the impact that tourism has on Shelby County.

The Chamber is also offering up to 10 businesses in the

Tourism and Recreation sector to participate in the Showcase Feature Program during networking.

The Showcase Feature Program is a mini-expo that

offers those businesses that participate the opportunity to showcase their products and services to attendees. Showcase Tables are offered on a firstcome, first-served basis.

Hazards of Ultraviolent Radiation to the Ocular System Presenting Sponsor

UV Radiation is reflected off surfaces such as snow, water, or white sand. Risk is particularly high at the beach, while boating or on ski slopes.

Individuals whose work or recreation involves lengthy exposure to sunlight are at greatest risk. Risk is greatest during mid-day hours (10:00AM-3:00PM) and during summer months. UV levels increase nearer the

equator so individuals in the southern U.S. are at a greater risk than other parts of the Country. UV levels are also greater at higher altitudes.

Protection from sunlight can be obtained by using a brimmed hat or cap and UV absorbing eyewear.

For outdoor use in the bright sun, sunglasses that absorb 99100% of the full UV spectrum are recommended.

Individuals who also wear

clear prescription eyewear outdoors should consider using lenses that absorb the same spectrum.

Labels should be examined carefully on over the counter sunglasses to ensure they absorb at least 99-100% of both UV-B and UV-A. Consumers beware of claims that sunglasses “block harmful UV” without saying how much.

Ultraviolent Radiation, commonly known as UV, is made up of invisible high energy rays from the sun that lie just beyond the violet/blue end of the visible spectrum.

The anterior structures of the eye absorb more than 99% of UV radiation that is absorbed by the eye, small amounts reach the retina.

There is good scientific data that leads us to believe UV absorption contributes to age related changes in the eye, such as cataract and other serious eye diseases such as pterygium, cancer of the skin around the eye, photokeratitis and corneal degenerative changes, and it may contribute to age related macular degeneration.

Everyone is at risk. No one is immune to the UV related eye disorders. Every person in every ethnic group in both developed and developing nations is susceptible to ocular damage from UV

Ambassador of the Month Taylor Anderson is the Director of Sales for IHG’s Candlewood Suites, Alabaster, located in Shelby County.

Taylor does inside and outside sales for the hotel and was promoted to the position in September, 2018. With three years under her belt in the hospitality industry, Taylor has worked in many areas of operations including housekeeping, front desk agent, Presenting Sponsor front office manager and her current position in sales. Chamber Seeking Nominations for Fifth Annual Healthcare Professional of the Year The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce’s Health Services Work Group is seeking nominees for its fifth annual Healthcare Professional of the Year program. This award will recognize individuals who have made an outstanding contribution in the healthcare to our community. Any healthcare professional employed in the Shelby County area is eligible to be nominated. The deadline for nominations is June 13. The
