programme of events at Sheffield

Students' Union. As always, Autumn

is crammed with events in collaboration with Off The Shelf. We'll be discussing

Immigration law, life as Sheffield's leading

illustrator with Pete McKee, The History of Blackpool Pleasure Beach with Prof. Vanessa Toulmin, the science of Game Of Thrones, Star Trek and the History of the LGBT movement with Jeffery Weeks 'History Of Coming Out' book. We have a whole weekend focused on music related topics including a look at the #sheffieldgirl phenomenon and women in music. We've got some amazing films and some brilliant comedy. Cured - Lol Tolhurst Weds 28 Sept, 7pm Auditorium, £8/£6.50 The inside story of The Cure by one of its founding members. Cured is a memoir by Lol Tolhurst, drummer and keyboardist with iconic band The Cure. From meeting Robert Smith at the age of five Lol traces The Cure’s story from schoolboy years, success in the 1980s to the present day. The bands rise to worldwide acclaim is woven into a journey of great highs and bitter lows, friendship, pain, forgiveness and, ultimately, redemption on a beach in Hawaii.

Glam Rock and Its Legacy – Simon Reynolds

Acclaimed music writer Simon Reynolds explores this most decadent of genres on both sides of the Atlantic, charting the retro future sounds, outrageous styles and gender-fluid sexual politics that came to define the early seventies. A final chapter looks at the impact of Glam in hip hop, Lady Gaga, and the aftershocks of David Bowie’s death. The event will be followed by a screening of the David Bowie’s movie Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

Gluten is regularly lambasted in the press, demonised by wellbeing experts and banned from more diets every day. But where does the hype end and science begin? Cutting through the sensationalism, myths and confusion Professor David Sanders explores the latest evidence and ground-breaking research findings from his personal journey into all things gluten. David is Professor of Gastroenterology at the world-renowned Royal Hallamshire Hospital and University of Sheffield. In Collaboration with University of Sheffield Public Engagement & Impact team.

Octagon, £10 advance The SynthFest UK event has been created by leading music technology magazine Sound On Sound to showcase Analogue, Digital and Modular Synthesizers. The exhibition features a Manufacturer Showcase Village, and a Modular Meet Camp where enthusiastic musicians and fans can show off their personal setups. Plus Q&A Sessions, Seminars & Demos. SynthFest UK is part of the Sensoria Festival.

Auditorium £8/£6.50 A troubled youth of neglect and crime led Erwin James to a life sentence at 27. Struggling with his violent past and a hopeless future, a prison psychologist encouraged him to read and self-educate and, over the next twenty years, James went on to receive a BA in History and become a columnist for the Guardian. This is a book that offers no excuses but argues that no matter how far the fall – with the right help –redemption is always possible.

Wild Beasts

At 16 Grace, from Sheffield, became severely anorexic - and she recovered. This unique memoir tells the parallel stories of Grace and her mother conveying their isolation, heartache, terror and helplessness as well as finding moments of humour and incredible support too. Nine years on Grace and Liz talk about their experiences and challenge some assumptions about eating disorders. An insightful look at the issue of young peoples’ mental health.

The Place That Didn’t Exist - Mark Watson Sun 16 October, 7pm Foundry, £7.50/£6 Mark Watson is the acclaimed author of several novels including Hotel Alpha, Eleven and graphic novel, Dan and Sam. His latest, The Place That Didn’t Exist, is a darkly funny and gripping thriller. Mark is a multi-award winning stand-up comedian. He regularly appears on TV, has had his own cult Radio 4 series and been named the Edinburgh Fringe Festival’s highest achiever of the decade by The Times.

Mon 17 October, 7pm Foundry, £7.50/£6 From the barbaric oppression in the 19th century to the gay liberation movement in the 1970s and beyond, Coming Out maps the story of British LGBT identities and the on-going struggle for equality. Published to great acclaim in 1977 as a pioneering study of gay and lesbian lives, this classic title is reissued in an updated edition. Research Professor Jeffrey Weeks OBE is an equal rights campaigner and commentator on LGBT issues.

Poetry and Protest - Dr Adam James Smith and Dr Hamish Mathison Mon 17 October, 7pm Studio, £6/£5 Poetry, Conspiracy and Radicalism in Sheffield collects poems of protest printed in Sheffield’s radical press at the end of the 18th century. The book’s editors, Drs Hamish Mathison and Adam Smith tell the remarkable story of these poems and the two Sheffield citizens who risked everything to get them into print - Joseph Gales and James Montgomery. In Collaboration with University of Sheffield Public Engagement & Impact team.

Citizen Clem: A Biography of Attlee – John Bew Thurs 20 October, 7pm Auditorium, £8/£6.50 As Prime Minister Clement Attlee oversaw the end of the Empire in India, the foundation of the NHS and Britain’s first participation in NATO developments that still shape British politics today. Historian John Bew re-evaluates this patriotic socialist as one of the most important figures in twentieth-century British history - an underappreciated and underestimated politician who profoundly influenced both his party and his country.

If you want to tell your own story bring a musical memory with you: a ticket stub, a club flyer or even a picture on your phone.

Bookworms often dream of being authors - but did you know there are other ways to work with books? That you don’t have to publish a novel to be a writer? Hosted by the Society of Young Publishers (now open to all ages), this crash course will tell you all you need to know about a career in publishing: from job roles to genres and handy hints on getting in.

The Idiot Brain: A Neuroscientist Explains What Your Head Is Really Up To Dean Burnett Sat 22 October, 10.30am Auditorium £8/£6.50 The popular Guardian ‘Brain Flapping’ science blogger presents a funny, mind-bending examination of how and why the brain sabotages our behaviour. Dean Burnett has spent nearly two decades studying the human brain, the most complex, mysterious object in the known universe. He explores the many ways the brain does things inefficiently, illogically or just plain stupidly, and how these end up influencing our everyday lives and the world around us.

Patti Boulaye Sat 22 October, 5.30pm Raynor Lounge, £6/£5 Born in Nigeria, Patti survived the Biafra War and came to Britain to become a nun. Whilst sightseeing she stood in a queue for Madame Tussauds which was actually an audition for the West End production of Hair. She won a part, launching an international career with roles in many musicals, winning talent show New Faces and releasing nine albums. Today much of her focus is on charity work.

George Monbiot and Ewan McLennan Sat 22 October, 7.30pm Firth Hall, £15/£11 Author and journalist George Monbiot and folk singer Ewan McLennan take loneliness and social isolation as the theme for their collaborative project. Singing a cappella with guitar and banjo, Ewan will perform the songs from album The Age of Loneliness interspersed with George’s depiction of the human stories behind the songs. Expect a unique and one-off interplay of songs and stories that will be at once poignant and rousing.

Lesley Ann Jones – David Bowie Sun 23 October, 2.30pm Foundry, £7.50/£6 The death of iconic musician David Bowie in January 2016 was one of the biggest shocks in music history leading to a worldwide outpouring of grief. Lesley-Ann Jones met Bowie whilst a schoolgirl in Bromley and was star-struck. She followed him and later worked with him and became a friend. He inspired her to become a music writer. This is a very personal portrait that will reveal unknown aspects of Bowie - man and artist.

CC Smugglers Thurs 30 October, 7pm / 14+ Foundry, £10 advance Bedford super group CC Smugglers will embark on a 16 date UK tour following a summer packed with appearances at some of Europe’s top music festivals – including a performance alongside Lana Del Ray, Lionel Richie and Simply Red opening for Bruce Springsteen at the prestigious Werchter Festival in Belgium on 9th July.“The best live band on the scene at the moment.” Cerys Matthews, BBC6 Music.

Matt Berry and The Maypoles Wed 26 October, 7pm Foundry, £18 Berry is perhaps best known for his acting role as Douglas Reynholm in The IT Crowd from 2007 until the final episode in 2013. He is also well known for his appearances in Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, The Mighty Boosh, Snuff Box, and “The Wrong Door”. He plays Beef in House of Fools and the title character in Channel 4 sitcom Toast of London. Matt Berry and The Maypoles announce THE Small Hours Tour which will showcase his forthcoming Autumn album of the same name. The band will perform a selection of songs from his new album along with choice cuts from his earlier releases ‘Witchazel’ and ‘Kill The Wolf’. Recorded at a spiritual retreat on the Kent coast ‘The Small Hours’ is Matt’s first album for two years and is released on the Acid Jazz label.

A beautifully illustrated talk based on the book Blackpool Pleasure Beach More than Just an Amusement Park. Founded in 1896, in the 1920s the Pleasure Beach became world famous inspiring amusement park designers including Walt Disney. This talk features rare, original archival drawings and designs by leading British 20th century designers including Tom Purvis and Percy Metcalfe. Vanessa Toulmin is Director of City and Cultural Engagement at the University of Sheffield.

The Private Lives of the Tudors is the definitive look at Tudor life, turning everything you think you know about the world’s most famous dynasty on its head. Discover the secrets of servants, attendants and courtiers who surrounded the monarchy – the eyewitnesses who knew the truth behind the glamorous exteriors of Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and Mary I. Sheffield provides a rich inspiration for McKee’s work – hear Pete reminisce about the city and discuss future plans.

Comedian, writer and actor Francesca Martinez is our guest curator. Since starring in five series of BBC’s Grange Hill, Francesca has toured internationally with sell-out runs of her comedy shows and is known for her motivational talks and campaign work. Her book What The **** Is Normal?!, was a bestseller. Join Francesca and her guests as they explore her theme, ‘How to Create a Better World’ in a day of discussion and inspiration.

Screening of Ken Loach’s award-winning feature film I, Daniel Blake. Daniel Blake has worked as a joiner most of his life in Newcastle. Now, for the first time ever, he needs help from the state. He crosses paths with single mother Katie and they find themselves caught on the barbed wire of welfare bureaucracy, as played out against the rhetoric of ‘striver and skiver’ in modern day Britain.

Marina Cantacuzino in conversation with Francesca Martinez. Marina is the founder of The Forgiveness Project, a secular organisation that shares real stories of forgiveness to enable people to reconcile with the pain and move forward from the trauma in their own lives. Marina and Francesca will discuss whether forgiveness may have more currency than revenge in an age that seems locked into the cycle of conflict.

How To Create A Better World... Through ACTION 7pm, Foundry John Rees in conversation with Francesca Martinez. John Rees is a writer, historian, broadcaster and campaigner, co-founder of the Stop the War Coalition and a spokesperson for the People’s Assembly Against Austerity. His new book is The Leveller Revolution.

Sheffield University Theatre Company (SuTCo) produces eight shows per year, and has firmly established its place as a working committee in Sheffield Students’ Union. Six of our shows each year are performed in the University Drama Studio, a church-converted theatre on Glossop Road, with the remaining two staged in alternative venues, expanding our relationship with the city and allowing our members to experience theatre in a variety of spaces.
