Hi, I’m Ash, and I’m standing to be your SU president!

My campaign is a straightforward one - The position of SU President doesn’t need to exist. The role is effectively that of an Officer without portfolio, and the decision making power of the President could easily be delegated to the other Officers.

Abolishing the position would enable funds to be set aside as the President’s wages to be used for one of any number of better causes, such as financial assistance for vulnerable students, or pay rises for the other Officers in order to better reflect the work they do, or to build a rolling walkway from Interval to Bar One. I’m personally in favour of the former, though I suspect that if I’m able to carry out my manifesto promise, it’ll be for the remaining officers to decide what to do with the money, not me.

If elected, I will attempt to abolish the position this summer, and continue my studies in the new academic year. If I’m not able to do this, then I will attempt to spend the year demonstrating how much of the President’s time is spent on pointless endeavours. I guess we’ll have to play it by ear. Maybe they’ll let me put a giant flag outside the SU?

If this ends up being an actual job that requires actual work, then I’ll carry out my Presidential duties for the year wearing a t-shirt or badge that says ‘USELESS’. Win/Win, right?

Good evening all!

I would love to spearhead a campaign for the SU to develop. Already I love the work that has been done but I feel like there is more we can do. Firstly I feel that we should make the no waste shop in the SU bigger and have more of a focus on it. Secondly the Sandwiches we sell have palm oil in them, which is extremely bad for the environment and maybe we should change that? After this, perhaps the INOX is not the best thing to keep in a student space. Lastly I think that we should work for a stronger mental health support system as the one we have is not perfect.

I’m the Will of the people The University of Sheffield Students’ Union has enjoyed and celebrated its 10th year of being the best Students’ Union in the UK. As a Student Trustee, I would strive to ensure that the Students’ Union continues to progress and move forward. I would aim to maintain the title of the best Students’ Union for the 11th year and beyond, for all of us. Although this position of Student Trustee is for 1 year, it is vital to provide a strategic direction for the Students’ Union beyond that, looking at both current and future opportunities.

As a current and active student, I would do my best to provide insight into the perspectives of students. The Students’ Union is a representative and key part of student life for any student in Sheffield, and as a Student Trustee, I would use the role to ensure the experience is furthered by the Student Union’s strategic direction. I am a member of the Politics Society Committee and an avid volunteer, I do my best to help others both inside and outside of the University sphere. Volunteering is a key area of interest for me; I would encourage the Students’ Union to embrace volunteering further into its fabric, supporting actions to help make volunteering more accessible and beneficial for all students and recipients.

My name is Mark Ayad and I am an international student at the University of Sheffield. I am doing a MEng Civil Engineering course with a year in industry and I am expected to graduate in 2023. I believe that Student Trustees have a huge role in enhancing all students’ University lives. University time is one of the best time periods in students’ lives. We start creating our own lives and thoughts. Each of us develops their own character and most importantly, we gain many important life skills. However, if the students are not comfortable in their University, many of the University’s perks will not be achieved and it could be the worst time of the students’ lives. I am here to make sure that everyone enjoys their time at the University. I am here to make sure that everyone’s voice is heard. University is our second home. We all left our original homes to come here and learn and develop our lives. As a Student Trustee, I will make sure that every moment you spend at the University is fun and memorable. I come from another country and I know most of the obstacles that face students in moving out of their original homes. I will make sure that every student finds the correct help for all the problems they face at University. You are not alone, we are here to help you.

Vote Natalia for trustee Hi! I’m running for trustee because over my 3 years here, I have come to genuinely love this SU. As a trustee I will centre student wellbeing in all decisions made, with focus on making sure SU facilities are truly accessible and ensuring that vital services like the Student Advice Centre are able to provide the support that students need.

BME, LGBT+ and disabled students have long been underrepresented on the trustee board. The important decisions that shape our SU, our day-to-day lives as students, are currently being made with little insight into our actual experiences and what we want and need from our SU. I will make sure our voices are heard and our needs met.

I have the experience needed to make real change happen. I’ve been on multiple committees within our SU, and am the current chair of Women’s Committee. This has given me a lot of insight into how the SU works, not just experiencing it as a student but also seeing the behind the scenes workings of how change really happens.

This includes meeting with the CEO of our SU to discuss real, practical changes to address racism. I’m proud to say that several of the suggestions I made are already being implemented now.

I’m also part of the NUS National Executive Council which has provided great experience analysing budgets and organisation structure to ensure that students are being supported and represented by them.

Elected Student Trustee Luke Tippins Pro-active for Change Hi, I’m Luke and I am running for the position of Elected Student Trustee because I saw that there were no applications for the position and upon finding out what it involves, believe I would be a great fit. I believe my knowledge of Sheffield and what student life is like would allow me to ensure that students benefit more from what the Students’ Union does. Many people feel that they have nothing to do with the actual Students’ Union, and as such don’t knowingly or to the full extent benefit from it. As such, an objective of mine, if appointed, would be to expand the Students’ Union’s apparatus in terms of everyday benefits for students.

If the Students’ Union’s benefits are more visible and not just high-level then students will get more involved. It does not have to be something daunting. Another objective would be to work with students to find out if the Students’ Union can help them be more satisfied with their course. As someone who studies history and politics, my own contact hours are incredibly limited.

Something I know many other people are not happy with, but simply accept as ‘it’s humanities that’s what it’s like’. I believe that the Students’ Union should reach out to work with departments that students don’t feel satisfied with. Last year politics students, myself including myself, signed a letter of disappointment to the department, I never heard a response.

As one of its members I have the sense of pride that the whole University community shares, in being part of something that is so great. This upcoming year I would like to present why I would like to be a Student Trustee for the SU and why I think I am the right person for it!

1.) As an active member of the SU already through my role as an SU Councillor (Maths and Statistics) and a student representative of the University Senate I feel l have the knowledge and experience to take on this role.

2.) The role and responsibility of being a Student Trustee to “provide strategic direction and insight for the organisation”; I would personally like to do this through increasing student engagement in coming up with ideas but also I would ensure that the strategic directions of the SU was discussed with students as it is “run by the students for the students”.

3.) Lastly, I believe I should be your Student Trustee because I want to always ensure the SU is a welcoming environment for all, no matter their background, or their standing in life.

Hamish Sams Vote for Hamish I’m Hamish, a 3rd year EEE student and HackSheffield Treasurer, I’ve worked within my society to improve the quality of events open to students by improving cash flow in the society. I’ve also worked as a business analyst at GSK to improve the cost and production of lifesaving medication and also at a renewable energy company planning renewable developments.

Currently there are tens of dormant societies without committees or events. These dormant societies still sap money from the SU, I would like to work with the SU to remove these long term dormant societies and re-distribute the cash to societies that work hard to put on events for students.

Kelly Madden Trust Me I want to run for Elected Student Trustee because I am committed to improving the student experience here at at the University of Sheffield. Currently I am the NUS Parent Carer student delegate and I have already had policy submitted and approved at a national level. I want to do more work within the University to ensure students from all walks of life get the most out of their student experience.

Renewable energy is something we need to start investing in due to global warming. I would like to push for the SU to continue to improve renewable energy solutions.

Better Living Through Technology Some of you may know me from HackSheffield (https://hacksheffield. co), one of the largest and most successful student-run hackathons in the UK. This year we had the Mayor of Sheffield open the event for us, we’re known for our out of the box thinking and innovative spirit, it has been an honour to lead this year’s team, and I hope to bring a similar approach to my role as a Student Trustee.

Long term strategy and planning are areas that I excel in, I believe that the Sheffield Students’ Union and by extension the students themselves would benefit from me applying these skills and insights.

If I had the time, I would be running for an Officer role, but I believe that I can make some lasting impact through my involvement as a Student Trustee.

Specifically, I think that there many areas of interaction with the Students’ Union website and associated services that can be significantly improved. Anybody that has had to handle payments or banking on behalf of a society, get reimbursed for something, or even tried to join a society will understand how painful the process can be. I have the experience, ability and resources to steer this in a positive direction.

I’m running to become an Elected Student Trustee with a great depth of experience within the sports community. I’ve been President of Swimming & Water Polo, Men’s Water Polo 1’s captain and I’ve been part of a panel determining Sport Sheffield’s new-look Club Sport Strategy.

I’ve therefore made crucial financial decisions on a regular basis for the past two years, and I would continue to do so with the motive of improving student experience at the forefront of my decision-making.

I am of the opinion that student experience is heavily underfunded by the University itself, and sport is a prime example. Sport Sheffield receives funding of £80,000/year from the Students’ Union and £90,000/year from the University, yet the University budget is approximately fifty times greater than that of the SU. I’ve seen first-hand both the University and SU pump money into front-line mental health treatment. This is incredible; however I’m of the opinion that it’s time to combat the causes, rather than the consequences, through improving student wellbeing.

Aside from my heavy involvement in sport, I’m a second year BSc Economics with Finance student. I’m a problem-solver, I’m not afraid of making difficult decisions, but I’ll always have the motivation of bettering student experience in doing so.

Small issues, Big change Next year I will be a 4th year Masters student in bioenginnering with a background in sports Over the last 3 years I’ve held multiple committee roles in both a sporting environment and an academic society (Women’s Captain-Fencing, Social SecretaryBioengineering). I hope this broad base of knowledge would form a good start point to help guide the direction of the SU in a way which will benefit as many as possible. With this in mind I aim to give a insight from multiple stand points to give strong overall guidance to the Trustee Board.

Personally within the SU I feel we should always be striving to give students the best support and ensure inclusion wherever possible, as a Student SU Trustee this is the line I would be pushing. To my way of thinking the small fixes come first; through focusing and pressing the smaller issues the larger tasks become more manageable. By giving insight on these more minor points I hope to give a positive input, and help to shape our ever changing SU.

Youssef Maharem Finger Lickin’ Good From being elected on student committees for two years in a row, to being elected as the SU Councillor for my department, to being further elected as the engineering faculty representative on the University Senate, I have always had a soft spot for the Union and everything it has offered me so far. I have been in larger student bodies as well as the smaller ones. I understand how both of them function internally as well as how they relate to other bodies externally. I have learned a lot across each stage and although it may have been stressful at times, I still loved every minute of it.

Now the time has come where I would like to continue learning how to better serve the Union and the larger student community, and that is by serving as a Student Trustee. Being a student trustee requires passion about the Union and loyalty to its purpose, aims, and values. It requires detachment and diplomacy, a professional mindset by which you listen to different opinions and communicate to reach a conclusion.

I understand the responsibilities of what such a role entails and I am ready to take them on with the best interests of students in mind.

Lorenzo Omar Only takes a moment to care Increase social interaction with in societies I aim to enhance and promote student societies by showcasing the different platforms and events students can participate. With more support and increased awareness there is no doubt we can promote social events to have a more diverse and bigger attendance.

Promote Postgraduate,Mature, International Students, LGBT involvements and awareness Being a mature Undergraduate student I can see the potential for mature, Postgraduate, international and LGBT students could having a difficult time settling in and finding the right society to join. At the moment the majority of societies and clubs are solely made up of Undergraduates and increasing diverse participation will only serve to enhance the student experience for all students at the University of Sheffield.

Celebrate and recognise student achievements I hope we can increase the quality of events provided. I would like greater and more frequent recognition of our students by implementing awards like club/society of the month.

Encourage more support groups Support groups are great for students to empathise with others and share experiences. We would love to aid people in forming new support groups e.g. for anxiety, depression and fatigue.

Increase student satisfaction I would like to implement a service more tailored to our students through drop-in sessions, email surveys and face to face interactions. One idea is to create a monthly calendar and guidebook for cultural, music and art events in Sheffield.

I am a second year postgraduate international student. As the secretary of the SU Sustainability Committee, I have been regularly participating in the SU Sustainability Steering Group meetings since June. In addition, as part of my work conducting a sustainability audit of the University, I have also attended University Sustainability Delivery Group meetings and interacted with senior university staff members. These meetings have given me the opportunity to speak and present the student voice to SU and University staff members, as well as learn about the governance structure of these bodies. Because of these experiences working with SU staff, I believe that I’m a good candidate for the Student Trustee.

Because of my diverse interests (Sustainability Committee, Gospel Choir, Anime Society, Yoga Society), I am actively involved in Student Union societies and activities and interact a lot with undergraduate students. The SU has helped me and other students develop our confidence and find our place in the wider world. I do believe that our SU is worthy of being the #1 Students’ Union in the country and would like to help see it continue listening to students and benefiting them, and making the best decisions for the long term sustainability of the SU and the wider world.

Robert Payne Supporting A Diverse and Successful SU Hi, my name is Robert (Rob) and I’m a third year mature student on a four year integrated masters degree in Urban Studies and Planning.

Within the Students’ Union, I am currently the Chair of the Mature Student committee (MSC) and a member on the Disabled Student Committee (DSC). I believe I would be a good candidate for a Student Trustee, not simply because of the demographics which I happen to fall within, ones which I would be happy to represent, but my ability and willingness to ensure that the interests of all students are equally considered and catered for by the Students’ Union.

Additional skills come through my course, which is largely based on policy and how it is interpreted and implemented, which when combined with skills and knowledge learnt from being on committees within the Students’ Union offer myself a grounding for the many of the desired skills required to be a Student Trustee.

Finally although my daughter doesn’t attend Sheffield University, I have nieces and nephews who hopefully one day may, and if by being a Student Trustee, I can play a part, however small in ensuring the prosperity and continued success of the Students’ Union for them and every other prospective student, that would be amazing.

Vote Emily for trustee My name is Emily Jones and I would like to run for the role of Student Trustee as I am committed to maintaining Sheffield’s Students’ Union’s position as the country’s number one. I have studied Biology for the last three years, improving my analytical and problem solving skills, which I believe could be of use when helping to make decisions about the SU. Last year, I completed my year abroad at a Canadian University. This was a fantastic experience which has opened my eyes to different learning systems around the world, and also demonstrated how lucky Sheffield students are to have such an inclusive SU. I would like to maintain the SU’s standard - I am interested in driving it’s strategy, and ensuring all students receive equal opportunities. I believe I would be a great representative for the SU as my Undergraduate degree has taught me about issues surrounding science, and my dedication in helping mitigate these problems is shown by my application to do a Masters in Science Communication at Sheffield, to help improve the public perception of science. Therefore, I would like to transfer my communicative skills and enthusiasm for helping people and the environment by being a Student Trustee. I would find it fascinating to learn more about how the SU operates, and to bring student’s opinions to discussion whilst ensuring decisions are made in the interests of the Union and its members, to overall enrich the experience of being a student at the University of Sheffield.
