Lighting the way out of darkness: Transforming lives through education, legal, and social services

Lighting the Way: Transforming Lives through Education, Legal, and Social Services

Dear Friends, Witnessing the human spirit being restored can take your breath away. For example, Chiripa, a child living in poverty in the Dominican Republic, was gravely ill as a baby and most did not think she had a chance to survive. But with the help of the medical clinic we began there, she has grown into a healthy, bubbly teenager. Duahajri, a young mother who came to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic, was unable to get a job because she did not speak English. But with the help of Providence Center, a community center we founded in Philadelphia, PA, Duahajri learned English.

“Actions Not Words.” —Cornelia Connelly For Cornelia Connelly, a person’s faith was as

much about action, as it was about prayer and reflection. Therefore, it’s no surprise then when she founded the Society of the Holy Child Jesus (SHCJ) in 1846, action was at its heart. Today, the actions of the Holy Child community empower tens of thousands of people to develop their Godgiven gifts and talents and reach their full potential.

Guiding individuals such as Chiripa and Duahajri as they work to transform their lives is a remarkable privilege. As hope grows in those we serve, their zeal for life is restored and our mission of “helping others to believe that God lives and acts in them and in our world” is put into action. Throughout this year, we will be celebrating these amazing stories of transformation, as well as the many people and partnerships that make it possible through our “Lighting the Way” theme.

Meeting Today’s Unmet Needs

We are committed to ensuring that at least 40% of our operating budget is directed to various ministries that help light the way for so many in need. You may notice that this issue of Actions is a little smaller than previous issues. Producing Actions with fewer pages is one step we are taking to ensure we meet this goal. We are also committed to reducing our carbon footprint and fewer pages in Actions helps us to do that. You can still get all the information you want since we are doing much more online. In addition to connecting with you here in Actions, we look forward to seeing you online! With gratitude,

During the past 20 years, the Society of the Holy Child Jesus has initiated innovative ministries in response to the unmet needs of our time. Through these ministries, God’s most vulnerable are lifted up and empowered to become all that they are called to be. Unique models create dynamic and effective programs that light the way out of poverty for more than 5,000 individuals every year. For example, when Tyrik arrived at Hope Partnership for Education, a middle school the Sisters of the Holy Child founded in partnership with the Sisters of Mercy in Philadelphia, PA in 2002, his behavior was so disruptive that the staff and faculty considered asking him to leave the school, but they also saw a child with great potential and they refused to give up on him. Their determination led to months of work that made a difference. Today, Tyrik is one of the best behaved students at Hope and is on his way to a successful high school career. Despite losing his sight in a San Salvadorian earthquake, Luis, a 30-year-old father of two, established a successful business. His success made him a target for violent gangs and he was offered little protection from a corrupt police force that was involved in perpetrating the violence. But with the help of the Casa Cornelia Law Center, which was founded by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus in San Diego, CA in 1993, Luis and his daughters were granted asylum in the U.S.

Through the Casa Cornelia Law Center, founded by the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus, Luis was granted asylum in the U.S. for himself and his daughters.

Transformation at Holy Child Ministries These are the stories of just two of the thousands of lives that are changed every year through the ministries of the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus. “Of all the things we do, giving light to the human spirit is the most inspiring,” says Mary Ann Buckley, SHCJ, Leader of the Society’s American Province. Throughout 2012 and 2013, the SHCJ will highlight and celebrate the inspiring stories of those who have been empowered to change their lives with the help of the SHCJ’s newest ministries.

Partners in Mission What is just as inspiring is how many people partner with the SHCJ to make these ministries possible. From SHCJ Associates who travel to the SHCJ mission site in the Dominican Republic and undertake service projects to Holy Child alumnae and friends who generously donate in support of the SHCJ ministries to current Holy Child •1

The Holy Child Awards Dinner brings together

the Holy Child community to celebrate and pay tribute to all those who help to perpetuate the mission of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus (SHCJ). The Fifth Annual Holy Child Awards Dinner will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at the Radisson Hotel in Valley Forge, PA.

With a gentle spirit and a generous heart, Mrs. Grace willingly assumes leadership roles in organizations that strengthen the fabric of our communities. She is a member of the Pastoral Council at her parish, St. Andrew the Apostle, and has served on numerous boards including Holy Child Academy, Drexel Hill, Merion Mercy Academy for Girls, the Community YMCA Foundation, Mercy Catholic Medical Center, and the Upper Darby Arts and Education Foundation.

Mrs. Grace feels a spiritual hunger exists in our world today, making the time ripe for the Society’s mission. Having her children enrolled at Holy Child Academy deepened her own spirituality. “In talking with one of the Sisters about how I felt my son learned differently than other children, the Sister responded by saying, ‘Mrs. Grace, all children

Mrs. Marianne Grace, who served on the board of Holy Child Academy, Drexel Hill and whose two children graduated from the school, and Mr. Christopher McNabb, who graduated from the Rosemont School of the Holy Child in Rosemont, PA in 2001, will receive the 2013 Faith in Action and Holy Child Spirit Awards. Both epitomize this year’s theme of Lighting the Way.

Marianne Grace Mrs. Grace believes in the power of community. For more than two decades, she has served in key positions in Pennsylvania’s Delaware County, which has more than 550,000 residents. As Executive Director today, Mrs. Grace oversees the County’s administrative, operations, and social service departments. From educating the community on voter laws to developing a budget of more than $550 million, Mrs. Grace says that no two days are the same. Prior to her current role, Mrs. Grace spent more than a decade developing comprehensive programs for mental health,

Associates Gathering

By Cathi Duffy

From June 22-24, Associates of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus (SHCJ) and Holy Child Sisters came together at New Sharon in Rosemont, PA for the Holy Child Associates National Gathering. Entitled “Actions Not Words,” this weekend of prayer and reflection became an international event with Associates from England and Nigeria attending. The weekend energized Associates about their own spiritual journeys. Embracing the spirit and mission of the Holy Child is a powerful guide for deepening our relationship with our loving God! SHCJ Associates are inspired by the mission and spirituality of Cornelia Connelly, the Foundress of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, and deepen their spirituality through personal prayer, reflection, spiritual development, ministry, and community. For more information on the SHCJ Associates, contact Cathi Duffy, Director, at cduffy@shcj.org or 610.626.1400, x310.

learn differently.’ This has always stayed with me because it underscores how we need to treat each person as unique. That’s the essence of the Holy Child philosophy and what is needed in our world today,” she shares. Mrs. Grace and her husband, Ronald, who is a Project Manager, live in Drexel Hill. Her son, Ryan, a 1998 graduate of Holy Child Academy, is the Assistant District Attorney for Delaware County and her daughter, Kelly, a 2000 graduate of Holy Child Academy, is a student.

Christopher McNabb Mr. McNabb’s service-directed life began at a young age and he carried that spirit with him to the Rosemont School of the Holy Child. “When Sister Mary [Broderick, Head of the Rosemont School of the Holy Child] said ‘yes’ to a scared sixth-grader desperate to serve God’s people, but clueless in every other way, I never could have imagined the

outcome,” says Mr. McNabb. After enrolling at the School, Mr. McNabb organized penny drives to help the homeless. He later traveled to poverty-stricken areas across the world, including the Philippines, Guatemala, and Mexico, where he studied human rights violations and immigration issues, while building houses and educating minors unjustly sentenced to adult prisons. Mr. McNabb’s commitment to social justice is at the foundation of his efforts. As a Franciscan Volunteer Minister for two years, his ministry included providing pastoral services to migrant horse groomers living and working at the Delaware Park Race Track & Casino, serving those living with HIV/AIDS, and working with incarcerated women. Mr. McNabb believes that encountering the poor and alienated transforms people. “You must turn that transformation into action,” he adds. Mr. McNabb served as the Director of Campus Ministry at Father Judge High School and today, at St. Augustine’s

Prep, where he is responsible for the pastoral care of 700 students, families, faculty, and staff. He has been greatly inspired by the Sisters of the Holy Child. “I love the Sisters— their witness to Gospel living is constantly inspiring me to be a better human. When I look at their dedication, I realize how far I have to go,” he says.

2013 Awards Dinner The 2013 Holy Child Awards Dinner will celebrate how Mrs. Grace, Mr. McNabb, and the entire Holy Child community are lighting the way for others. Now in its fifth year, the Awards Dinner is a highly anticipated event. Last year’s event was held in New York City, celebrated the 150th anniversary of the SHCJ in America, and attracted more than 200 people. We invite all to support the 2013 event. Tickets will be available online soon at www.shcj.org/american and

invitations will be mailed in January. Supporters may also purchase tickets to sponsor the attendance of Holy Child Sisters; advertise their business or place a congratulatory ad in the event program book; and/or select to be a sponsor. Please contact Sandy Lovascio at 610.626.1400, x301 to discuss ways to support this event. Proceeds from the Awards Dinner benefit the Society’s ministries that “light the way” for more than 5,000 individuals every year.

Cornelian Society Members: United by a Legacy of Good Works

Holy Child Schools

Since 1862, the Holy Child Sisters have founded and/or taught at more than 50 parochial, diocesan, and independent schools in the U.S. While many of these schools continue to educate thousands of children every year, some have closed. All those who were taught by the Holy Child Sisters—regardless of the type of school or whether the school is opened or closed— are an integral and much-valued part of our Holy Child family. Here, we share alum reunions and news from those who were educated by the Holy Child Sisters.

Your commitment to the Society of the Holy Child Jesus (SHCJ) and its mission of action can be your legacy by naming the SHCJ as a beneficiary in your will, trust, or planned giving arrangement. Join the Cornelian Society today. The process is easy, the rewards are great. Contact Sandy Lovascio at slovascio@shcj.org or 610.626.1400, x301 or visit www.shcj.org/american. Rejoice! Rejoice!

A graduate of West Philadelphia Catholic Girls High School, Sister Mary Roberta taught in schools throughout the U.S. She was also a librarian and served as Director of Religious Education in several parishes.

Mary Estelle Logue, SHCJ (Mother Mary Estelle)

A graduate of West Philadelphia Catholic Girls High School, Sister Mary Estelle’s teaching career spanned almost six decades, mostly in New York. A life-long learner, Sister Mary Estelle perfected her Spanish so as to be of more service to the Hispanic community.

Rejoice with the Sisters of the Holy Child as Nancy Bello makes her final vows in the Society of the Holy Child Jesus (SHCJ) on October 21 in Santiago, Chile! Nancy, a native of Chile, came to know the SHCJ through Elizabeth Mary Strub, SHCJ (Mother Elizabeth Mary), who taught a two-year theology course which Nancy attended. Speaking of her calling to become a Sister of the Holy Child, Nancy says, “In 2002, I began to feel that God was asking more of me—a more dedicated service. It was no longer enough to go to Mass and work in parish ministry. I was unsettled.” After making her final vows, Nancy will serve as the Society’s Vocations Coordinator for Latin America. She has also recently completed a fiveyear training program on group facilitation and counseling and hopes to begin a ministry in the Society’s name in Chile.
