Cornelia Connelly 1809-1879 Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 15, 1809, Cornelia Connelly was a wife, mother, and Catholic nun. Her life was filled with challenges—the loss of her parents before she was 14; her marriage and subsequent separation from her husband, Pierce, when he became a Catholic priest; and the birth of five children and the tragic loss of two of those children at very young ages. Even in the midst of the suffering and loss that Cornelia experienced, she was able to embrace life, and even joy, through her unshakeable faith. When Cornelia and her husband, Pierce, separated due to his belief in a call to the Catholic priesthood, Cornelia put her faith in God and used her gifts of wisdom and intellect to found the Society of the Holy Child Jesus in 1846.
Society of the Holy Child Jesus Cornelia established a religious congregation that is responsive to the needs of the time, or in Cornelia’s own words, “meets the wants of the age.” Today, through education, social programs, and partnerships, nearly 400 Sisters of the Holy Child continue Cornelia’s legacy and the Society’s mission of helping others to believe that God lives and acts in them and in our world. The Sisters also help hundreds of people develop their own gifts and talents so that they can find good jobs, break the cycle of poverty, and provide for their families.

Cornelia believed in encouraging all to be themselves but to “make that self just what Our Lord wants it to be.” As a result, the ministries of the Sisters of the Holy Child are diverse and reflect each Sister’s individual gifts and talents. Today, serving across four continents, the Sisters carry out their mission in many ways—as teachers, spiritual leaders, health care professionals, lawyers, social workers, parish administrators, and pastoral care workers, to name just a few. The Sisters have also founded many schools and social service organizations.
