FIELD
TEACHING-LEARNING
STUDY 1: OBSERVATIONS OF
IN ACTUAL SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

INTRODUCTION

Field Study 1 is the first in a series of six sequential studies in the Bachelor of Elementary Education and the Bachelor of Secondary Education Programs (BEED and BSED) offered by the Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs). Field study 1 is linked with a professional education subject. It is the prerogative of the TEI to match with an appropriate subject such as Child and Adolescent Development, Principles of Teaching, or Facilitating Learning.

The focus of Field Study 1 is observation of the learners, school structure and the community. Since this is the first time the student teachers have been exposed to the school environment, they are expected to take note of the school and classroom facilities, and the organizational set-up of the school. The PSTs shall observe the behavior of the learners in the actual learning environment. Based on their observations of learners, PSTs shall develop their understanding on feasible approaches to facilitate learning considering the various phases of growth and development.

To assist their transition, the students will be paired with a “buddy”. Included in FS 1 is the enhancement of the students’ communication skills with his/her buddy since they are expected to be adequate in the language, they will be using during their hands-on teaching in the remaining field studies.

FS 1: EPISODE 1- THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

This first field study is all about the learners and their learning environment where they are honed, developed, and nurtured into a desired individual. The best way to understand the learners in a general sense is by way of in depth thinking and analysis of the current trend and shift of education which has a direct impact and effect to the learners. Another concern of the study is to look on the environment where the learners will be developed. Several topics were anchored on describing what an essential and conducive learning environment is for the learners. An environment that is engaging, comfortable and free from any disruptions that may lead to poor learning. A place that is fun and worth spending for. The purpose of the field study 1 is to conduct an observation on the physical aspects of the school such as the different facilities, classrooms, which totally has to do with the contribution on learner’s development and learning.

REFLECTION:

When doing our observation, I felt welcomed by the teachers and students. Field study 1 is helpful to me in taking this course because I already have a clue what are present in the school campus. I realized being a teacher is not easy because you should be careful in dealing your students and you know how to be patient.

FS 1: EPISODE

2- LEARNER

DIVERSITY: DEVELOPMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS, NEEDS, AND INTEREST

Episode 2 is all about the learner diversity: developmental characteristics, needs, and interests. In this episode you need to observe the different characteristics of the learners, you can encounter different behaviors of students. And you have the chance to know your similarities and differences to other students that you observe

REFLECTION:

Dealing with diverse learners is a difficult job. Teachersmust understand that these differences are factors that influence learner’s performance. A teacher must be able to respond with their needs no matter how diverse they are. Teachers need to modify every strategy or approaches they use when dealing with different group of learners. But the most important thing is that the teacher must accept these differences and influence other students to feel confident with themselves because they are unique.

EVIDENCE/DOCUMENTATION:

FS1: EPISODE 3- FOCUS ON GENDER, NEEDS, STRENGTHS, INTERESTS, EXPERIENCES LANGUAGE, RACE, CULTURE, RELIGION, SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS, DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES, AND INDIGENOUS PEOPLE

Episode 3 provides an opportunity to observe how differences in gender, racial, cultural and religious backgrounds, including coming from indigenous groups influence learner behavior, interaction, and performance in school. One will also analyze and reflection on practices that teachers use in leveraging diversity in the classroom. It also provides an opportunity to observe how differences in abilities affect interaction in school and learn about strategies that teachers use in addressing the learners needs toward effective teaching and learning.

REFLECTION:

During the time that I observed, I understand more that students are different in terms of their interests, needs, experiences, culture, and religion so that as a teacher I should not be harsh in dealing with them because I know that they are also having difficulty. I must be kind, patient, and understanding at all costs While doing my observation, I realize that I should love and treat my children as my child so that they will love to learn.

EVIDENCE/DOCUMENTATION:

FS 1: EPISODE 4- LEARNER DIVERSITY: THE COMMUNITY AND HOME ENVIRONMENT

Episode 4 provides opportunities for you to have a more I depth investigate the factors that affect the development of a learner. Focus will be on the early experiences and characteristics of the learner as described by the family and other significant others. You will also focus how the teacher links with community to maximize the learning and development of students.

REFLECTION:

During my observation, I already feel that I’m already a teacher. I also feel the sense of oneness and unity among the learners because I can see their eagerness to strive hard so that they can learn a certain topic. And also, the unity among the teacher and the learners because unity implies uniformity and harmony and the class I visited portray this characteristic.

EVIDENCE/DOCUMENTATION:

FS 1: EPISODE 5- CREATING AN APPROPRIATE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

This learning episode provides an opportunity to examine how classrooms are structures or designed to allow everyone’s maximum participation for effective learning. You should be able to examine how classroom management practices affect learning. This episode enhancesthe application of the theories learned in the following professional subject such as Facilitating Learner-Centered Teaching and The Child Adolescent Learners and Learning Principles.

REFLECTION:

In this episode I learned that it is important to be organized especially in making lesson plans or in the classroom like we should arrange things so that students can focus when conducting your lesson. The messier the classroom is they don’t like to listen, and they are distracted. And in the classroom, we should know how to employ positive discipline so that students will be responsible of their actions, and they will be aware of the bad behavior they have done.

EVIDENCE/DOCUMENTATION:

FS 1: EPISODE 6- CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND CLASSROOM ROUTINES

This episode focuses on the classroom structure and routines performed by teachers in class to provide a safe, friendly non-threatening and caring environment. Effective classroom routines ensure order and discipline to help the students to stay calm and focused on their daily tasks.

REFLECTION:

I can say that having classroom management and classroom routines is necessary for me as a future teacher because it enables me to run my daily activities smoothly, it ensures to manage time effectively, helps me maintain order in classroom, makes me more focused in teaching because I can spend less time in giving directions instructions and enables me to explain to the learners what are expected of them. We should have routines so that it is easier for us to start and end the discussion.

EVIDENCE/DOCUMENTATION:

FS 1: EPISODE 7- PHYSICAL AND PERSONAL ASPECTS OF CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

This episode tackles classroom management and discipline. It focuses on the personal and physical aspects of classroom management which are central to teaching and therefore must be consistently implemented.

REFLECTION:

In this episode I learned that it is a must to check the personal aspect of the classroom management for us to ensure the safety of the students and for them to be comfortable in staying in the classroom. It can also help to have a good flow when conducting learning activities. With these, we can assure that we can achieve effective teaching-learning because students are comfortable and feel safe.

EVIDENCE/DOCUMENTATION:

FS 1: EPISODE 8- CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM

In this episode, you can know the different types of curriculums and where it is found, what are their uses in the school setting. We can describe how the teacher manages the school curriculum by planning, implementing lessons through different strategies and assessment of learning outcomes and we can also analyze if the teacher aligns the objectives to subject matter, to teaching strategies and assessment.

REFLECTION:

In this episode, I learned the proper way of doing lesson plan and how it aligned the outcomes, teaching method, and assessment. As a future teacher I should know the different strategies in doing my lesson plan for me to make the teaching and learning effective, students will find it enjoy in listening to me. The three components in developing a lesson plan should be aligned for me to assess if the students really understand what I’m discussing.

EVIDENCE/DOCUMENTATION:

FS 1: EPISODE 9- PREPARING FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING

This episode gives emphasis on the principles of learning which must be applied to ensure quality instruction. It also focuses on the intended learning outcomes which set the direction of the lesson. They must be (SMART) Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time Bound and formulated in accordance with time tested principles.it also determines the teaching method used by the Resource Teacher whether (inductive or deductive) which is practical realization or application of an approach. This episode dovetails with the course on Facilitating Learner-Centered Teaching.

REFLECTION:

In teaching the students we should be SMART. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time bound so that students will easily understand your lessons. We should be SMART in doing lesson plans and activities in class.

EVIDENCE/DOCUMENATION:

FS 1: EPISODE 10- THE INSTRUCTIONAL CYCLE

This episode centers on the guiding principles in the selection and use of teaching methods. It will also tackle lesson development in the OBTL way. The K-12 curriculum and teacher education curriculum are focused on outcomes, standards, and competencies. This means that lessons must be delivered with focus on outcomes. Likewise, this episode dwells on types of questions, questioning and reacting techniques that teachers make use of. The type of questions that teachers ask and their manner of questioning and reacting to student responses have a bearing on class interaction. This episode strengthens the theories learned in the course, Teaching Methods and Strategies and in other professional subjects in education.

REFLECTION:

In this episode I realized that the lessons we conduct to the learners has a cycle, we cannot teach automatically, it has a process. So that I can say that it is not easy to be a teacher because you should be knowledgeable about everything, your goal is to understand the students about what you are teaching.

EVIDENCE/DOCUMENTATION:

FS 1: EPISODE 11- UTILIZING TEACHING-LEARNING RESOURCES AND ICT

With the lightning speed by which technology is evolving and now with 4.0, technology continues to be an ever-significant part of the learning environment. This episode provides an opportunity for students to examine a Learning Resource Center or Multimedia Center and learn about its collection, services, equipment, observe how a teacher utilizes technology for instruction, and explore resources in the virtual learning environment. Students will analyze and reflect on how technology, including artificial intelligence, supports the teaching-learning process.

REFLECTION:

Technology is defined as any tool, device, program, or system that when applied to the educational environment will increase productivity, creativity and achievement of students, teachers, and administrators and will prepare students for new roles in learning, living, and working in a technological world. Generally, these are devices that aid in the acquisition, manipulation, or communication of information or performance of a work process. These technologies encompass computers, TVs, VCRs, overhead projectors, satellite broadcast systems, peripheral devices, calculators, adaptive devices, networking infrastructure, instructional, operational, and management programs, and other forms of existing technologies as well as those not yet invented. Technology is the technical means people use to improve their surroundings. It is also a knowledge of using tools and machines to do tasks efficiently. We use technology to control the world in which we live. Technology is people using knowledge, tools, and systems to make their lives easier and better. People use technology to improve their ability to do work. Through technology, people communicate better. Technology allows them to make more and better products. Our buildings are better using technology. We travel in more comfort and speed because of technology. Yes, technology is everywhere and can make life better.

EVIDENCE/DOCUMENTATION:

FS 1: EPISODE 12- ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT AS LEARNING (FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT)

Assessment is an essential part of the instructional cycle. The instruction cycle consists of 1) setting the intended learning outcomes 2) selecting a teaching methodology, strategy and activity that are aligned to the learning outcome and topic which are developmentally appropriate to the learners and 3) assessment itself. Assessment is the part of the instructional cycle that determines whether the intended learning outcome has been attained and so necessarily, the assessment task must be aligned to the intended learning outcome. In a lesson on assessment, we can speak of assessment for learning, assessment of learning, and assessment as learning. This episode will dwell on assessment for learning and assessment as learning. Assessment for learning is referred to as formative assessment while assessment as learning is referred to as self-assessment.

REFLECTION:

Assessment for learning and assessment as learning is very important in the teaching and learning process for it is manifested when learners reflect on their own learning and make necessary adjustments so that they achieve deeper understanding. Assessment as learning encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning. Also, it provides ways for students to use formal and informal feedback and selfassessment to help them understand the next steps in learning. Formative assessment is an assessment conducted for monitoring students progress throughout the lesson.

EVIDENCE/DOCUMENTATION:

FS 1: EPISODE 13- ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING (SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT)

Episode 13 will be focused on Assessment of Learning. When teachers have done everything, they can help learners attain the intended learning outcome/s, teachers subject their students to assessment for grading purposes. This is referred to as assessment of learning which is also known as summative assessment. Episode 13 will be focused on 1) assessment of learning in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains with the use of traditional and nontraditional assessment tasks and tools, 2) assessment of learning outcomes in the different levels of cognitive taxonomy; 3) construction of assessment items with content validity; 4) Table of Specifications; 5) Portfolio, 6) Scoring Rubrics, 6) The K-12 Grading System and 7) Reposting Students’ Performance.

REFLECTION:

In the teaching and learning process assessment of learning is needed because it is a way to test the learnings of the students, without it teachers will having difficulty in rating the performance of their students.

EVIDENCE/DOCUMENTATION:

FS 1: EPISODE 14- THE TEACHER AS A PERSON AND AS A PROFESSIONAL

This episode will provide you a chance to observe teachers in their workplace at school And by the end of this episode, you will be able to describe the personal qualities and competencies of effective classroom teachers; and enumerate the professional characteristics of practicing teachers observed as based on the professional standards and code of ethics for the profession.

REFLECTION:

I don’t regret that I take education course because as we all know teachers are the most respected professionals in the whole world. For me education is the most difficult course since you will teach different kinds of students, some are stubborn and can run out your patience. But I will prepare myself about this I should be more patient to them

EVIDENCE/DOCUMENTATION:

FS 1: EPISODE 15- TOWARDS TEACHER QUALITY: DEVELOPING A GLOCAL TEACHER OF THE 21ST CENTURY

This episode is all about the personal qualities and competencies of a glocal classroom teachers of the 21st century and a learner centered classroom for the 21st century learners with learning spaces that are safe, that allows creativity and use of ICT.

REFLECTION:

Being a teacher is not easy due to the fact that you can experiences different challenges and one of the major challenges of quality teachers is to “create a learning environment that encourages creativity and innovation among learners ” with it, comes the management of learning in such environment. These are required skills for a global teacher. Additionally, majority of the current classrooms provide learning spaces that can hardly prepare 21st century learners for the development of the 21st century skills. Since the 21st century classroom is learner centered, the teacher acts as a facilitator of learning. Students no longer study each subject in isolation, but they work on interdisciplinary projects that cover several subject areas.

EVIDENCE/DOCUMENTATION:

FS 1: EPISODE 16- ON TEACHERS PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
