Welcome to our members for a new season with Shaws Bar Golf Club.
Last season was another successful one for the members, and I would like to thank outgoing Captain, Pat Kennedy for his work throughout last season.
In addition, great thanks to Club, the Committee Members who work hard during the year to ensure that your Club runs successfully.
We say “Adios” to Paul Nolan and Iain McGinlay who have left the Club and we hope to see them on the course as guests or visitors to our outings.
We also welcome Lars Jensen and Steve Birnie as new members and I am sure you will make them very welcome.
No doubt the season ahead will be a challenging one for us all, not least in trying to knock 3 times running Club Champion Robert J Ray off his perch.
Robert once again proved to be a formidable challenge and we congratulate him on winning the Club Championship and wish him well this year.
Finally, I wish you all good health and great golf and I look forward to catching up with you as the season progresses.
Your Captain
John (Dulsh) Dillon

Please note that this is a random draw.
Whilst Shaws Bar Golf Club is fully affiliated to Scottish Golf, we see ourselves as a social club where interaction of the members is one of our core principals.
Late entrants to competitions will be permitted to enter the Saturday competition by arriving at the Starter’s Hut prior to 10:30. Late entrants will be assigned to the last groups on the tee sheet.
Once the first group has teed off, no further entries will be allowed unless specifically approved by the Captain or Vice-Captain (in the Captain’s absence). If neither are available a member of the committee will decide.
All players are required to sign in at the Starter’s Hut prior to playing. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.
Those members who are not members of the David Lloyd course should pay the discounted green fee prior to commencing their round.
The Club Championship is a scratch competition and there is no handicap allowance.
Qualification for the knockout section of the Championship is held in the month of May with the best 2 scores from the first 4 Saturday’s in May taken from each player.
The current Club Champion will not be required to qualify and will be seeded No.1 in the Draw.
Players not submitting a minimum of 2 cards will automatically be eliminated.
The gross scores from the players will be ranked in ascending order and the players with assigned seeding based upon the combined lowest scores from the 2 cards.
In the event of players being tied, the 3rd card and 4th card will be used to determine the seeding.
In the event of a tied seeding, should a player not have submitted a 3rd or 4th card which is used to determine the seeding, the player who has submitted these cards will be given the lower seeding.
For 2024 Club Championship, the qualifying rounds will be played on 4th, 11th , 18th and 25th May 2024.
In the event of players still being tied after the 3rd or 4th cards, the seeding will be allocated via a random draw.
Once the qualification is completed, players will be entered into the draw in the following format.
Ties will have a deadline date which will be shown on the Draw Sheet.
Should players be unable to arrange a suitable time for their tie to be played both players are requested to turn up on the last day of the date the round of the competition to be played at 5pm.
If only one player turns up, that player will progress.
If no players turn up, both will be disqualified.
All players with a valid handicap will automatically be entered for the Singles Tournament.
This is a Handicap Tournament with players playing off full handicap. The competition is played off the White Tees.
Should White and Yellow Tees be combined, the default tee off position is 2 club lengths forward from the stone hole identifier back towards the hole. However, if both players agree, the combined White and Yellow tees can be used. A random draw will be made by the Committee and posted on The Shaws Bar noticeboard and email.
The lower handicap player will concede shots to the higher handicap player.
The number of shots is the differential between the players’ handicaps.
Shots given shall be determined by the stroke index of the hole being played
As an example:
Player A has a handicap of 12.4 (nominally 12)
Player B has a handicap of 18.6 (nominally 19)
Player A concedes 7 shots to player B.
Player B gets 1 shot in each of the first 7 holes as dictated by the stroke index.
In the event of the game being tied after 18 holes, players will proceed to the 1st hole and continue until a sudden-death winner is attained.
A player getting shots will follow the stroke index rules as per the original 18 holes and will receive shots at the appropriate hole.
The winner of the tie is responsible for ensuring that they put their name forward into the next round on the sheet in Shaws Bar noticeboard and advise the Match Secretary.
Failure for the winner to post their name into the next round will lead to disqualification.
All players must inform the Match Secretary should they wish to be entered into the draw for the Doubles Competition. Failure to do so, and the member will not be entered into the draw.
Please note that unlike the Singles Competition, any player withdrawing from the Competition after the draw has been made will put an unfair onus on their partner and therefore, the Committee reminds all players that, in the spirit of the game, to ensure that they withdraw if they do not intend to play before the draw is made.
The doubles pairing and the draw will be made by random selection by the Committee. However, the reigning champions will be paired in order to defend their title.
The competition is a handicap competition set at 9/10 of the playing handicap differential from the lowest player in the competitive grouping.
The lowest handicap player in the group will concede shot to all other players of a higher handicap.
The number of shots is the differential between the players’ handicaps.
Shots given shall be determined by the stroke index of the hole being played
Player A has a handicap of 12.4 (nominally 12)
Player B has a handicap of 16.2 (nominally 16)
Player C has a handicap of 19.6 (nominally 20)
Player D has a handicap of 22.5 (nominally 23)
Player B receives the following shots (16-12) = 4 x 9/10 = 3.6 = 4 shots
Player C receives the following shots (20-12) = 8 x 9/10 = 7.2 = 7 shots
Player D receives the following shots (23-12) =11 x 9/10 = 9.9 = 10 shots
The competition is played off the White Tees
Should White and Yellow Teed be combined, the default tee off position is 2 club lengths forward from the stone hole identifier back towards the hole. However, if both teams agree, the combined White and Yellow tees can be used.
In the event of the game being tied after 18 holes, players will proceed to the 1st hole and continue until a sudden-death winner is attained.
A player getting shots will follow the stroke index rules as per the original 18 holes and will receive shots at the appropriate hole.
The winner of the tie is responsible for ensuring that they put their name forward into the next round on the sheet in The Shaws Bar noticeboard and advising the Match Secretary.
Failure for the winner to post their name into the next round will lead to disqualification.

REMEMBER IT IS A FUN DAY AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH, HAVE A GREAT DAY.
The rules of golf are internationally governed by the Royal & Ancient Golf Club (R&A) and The United States Golf Association (USGA).
It is the responsibility of the Committee to ensure that the rules are always adhered to regardless of the competitors.
These rules do change from time to time normally in advance of a new season in the springtime. The Committee will update members of any new rules prior to the start of the season.
In addition to the International rules, there are some rules specific to the course at Deaconsbank. These can be found on the rear of the scorecards held in the Starter’s Office.
Also, there is a Club Committee rule on the 5th Hole.
A ball coming to rest in the ditch that falls between the blue stakes can be lifted and dropped, no nearer the hole, without penally.
Depending upon course conditions, it may be permissible for preferred lies on a ball coming the rest on the fairway. The noticeboard at the course will display if preferred lies are in operation. If they are, the ball can be placed a maximum of 6 inches from its resting position, no nearer the hole.
For clarification, lift, clean and place is permissible when preferred lies are in place. This applies only if the ball is on the fairway.
All areas of out of bounds are defined by white markers or by fences or walls surrounding the course.
Embedded Ball: “Through the Green” Winter Rules
Exceptions:
1. A player may not take relief under this Local Rule if the ball is embedded in sand in an area that is not closely mown.
2. A player may not take relief under this Local Rule if it is clearly unreasonable for him to make a stroke because of interference by anything other than the condition covered by this Local Rule.
PENALTY FOR BREACH OF LOCAL
Match play – Loss of hole; Stroke play – Two strokes.
Players must keep up with the group ahead or otherwise let the group behind play through.
Players must wave on following groups at the 3rd 4th 5th 12th holes to assist with speed up of play.
Players may take relief from all areas under repair, including materials left on the course by green staff. Any extremely bad (worn) earth patches that should be marked GUR if agreed by your fellow competitors.
Players may take relief from all paths, but not from the bridge itself.
Mats
Players may take relief from all mats on the golf course except on a bridge.
Players may take relief from the 5th ditch in front of the green if their ball lies in or touches any part of the ditch within the 2 yellow markers.
Players may take relief from the dovecot if a ball rests against the fence or within the ground beyond the fence. The ball should be dropped between the dovecot and the tree nearest the dovecot behind the 8th green.
Players may take relief from the ditch behind the 16th tee and must be dropped within two club lengths from the marked tree towards the 17th fairway.
Stones in bunkers are deemed to be movable obstructions (Rule 24-1 applies).
It is expected that all golfers are respectful of the Course, Rules and Playing Partners.
Please ensure you are mindful of players about to play their shot and remain quiet whilst they do so. This is especially important when a crowd has gathered at the Starter’s Hut adjacent to the 1st Tee.
Do keep up with play by remaining no more than 1 hole behind the forward group. Members should encourage slow players to increase the pace of the game by
· Playing shots in a timely manner
· Not stopping to have idle conversations when course is busy
· Placing bags and trolleys in suitable places to allow for a speedy play
Try not to wander backwards and forwards to your bag to get clubs. Best way to keep game moving is to move your bag with you.
Players should also be mindful not to obscure the line of a players shot (whether in your playing group or not)
Be mindful not to walk across a playing partner's line of putt
Do not play your shot until you are certain the group ahead is safely out of your reach.
Any new members of the Club, who are new to golf etiquette should be assisted by their fellow members to gain an understanding of what is expected. It is not insulting to advise new players; it helps them understand the etiquette.
On reaching the 3rd, 4th and 5th Greens, remember to wave players on the tee to play their tee shot. This helps to keep the game moving.
Be mindful of where you place your bag/trolley:-
• Keep your bag with you when moving to the next shot
• When on the green, if practicable, place you bag towards the exit of the green heading to the next tee
• When looking for a ball, place your bag as close to the area where to believe the ball to be. Once found, move your bag close to where the ball lies
• Be conscious of all other groups on the course and keep any conversations with other groups to a minimum and related to golf only e.g showing a player where his ball has landed should he/she be unsure.
When looking for a ball, be aware of the groups behind and allow them to play through if appropriate.
If you fall more than 1 hole behind, all players in the group should improve the rate of play to reduce the gap. More experienced players should encourage less experienced players to improve the speed of the game.
New members joining the club that already have a handicap should advise the Match Secretary on joining of their CDH number and previous handicap.
Any new member without a handicap should follow the procedure below in order to obtain a handicap.
It should be noted that members not holding a handicap will not be permitted to play in Club competitions, including Weekly Sweeps, Club Championship, Singles and Doubles.
A new member who has entered any of the competitions where a draw has been made (such as singles and doubles) should ensure they have a valid handicap prior to playing their first match.
• Play 3 rounds of golf over a measured qualifying course
• Have their score attested by a current member or a member of another golf club
• The ball must be holed out on every hole – there are no “gimmees”
• The 3 cards must be signed by the player and the attester
• These cards must be given to the Match Secretary
• Any questions regarding the validity of the cards must be addressed with the Match Secretary
