Getting healthier could be as easy as riding a bike.

Whether you learned how to ride a bike as a kid, or you’re just thinking about getting started, cycling is a terrific, non-impact form of exercise that can help you lose weight, build endurance and even bring back the joy of those youthful golden days. Before you get started though, these tips for beginner cyclists will help you ride better and safer.

Protect your head. Always wear a helmet when riding and make sure your kids do, too.

Get a proper bike fit. This will make riding much easier, more efficient and cause you much less pain and soreness during and after the ride.

Never ride with headphones on.

It can be extremely dangerous if you don't hear an emergency vehicle or other commotions behind you or off to the side.

Know the rules. Ride with traffic and obey all road signs. Closely watch all cars in front of you so you can try to anticipate what they are going to do.

Bone Broth: Benefits by the Bowlful The foundation for any great soup is a tasty and hearty broth. And there’s no better foundation than bone broth.

Bone broth is rich in minerals that support the immune system and contains healing compounds like collagen, glutamine, glycine and proline. The collagen in bone broth heals your gut lining and reduces intestinal inflammation.

No wonder adding bone broth to your favorite soup recipe makes it that much better for you. Any classic soup, from creamy tomato to chicken noodle, can be instantly amplified and enriched with the addition of slow-simmered bone broth.

Bone Broth Vegetable Soup Prep time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 45-60 minutes Yield: 8 servings Ingredients: 2 large or 3 medium organic sweet potatoes cut into

small chunks 4 large carrots cut into bite-size pieces 1 onion diced 2 zucchini cut into bite-size pieces A good handful of green beans cut into bite-size pieces 1 tsp ground ginger ½ tsp turmeric (optional) ½ tsp ground coriander (optional) ¼ tsp garlic powder 1 tbsp fresh chopped parsley 1 tbsp fresh chopped dill 1 tsp fresh squeezed lemon juice 1-2 tbsp coconut oil 4-6 cups bone broth (homemade or store bought)

When purchasing bone broth, be sure it is organic. You

want to make sure the bones used for the broth are

free of hormones and antibiotics.

Directions: 1. Heat a large soup pan over medium heat, add the oil and onion and sauté until translucent but not burned. About five minutes.

2. Add the rest of the vegetables, herbs and spices and cook for two more minutes. Add broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and let cook for 30-45 minutes.

3. Finish with fresh squeezed lemon juice. Once cooled, store in airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Better education among parents, coaches and kids is key.

N

early 8 million boys and girls played on a high school sports team during the 2017-18 school year. Tens of millions more played on youth teams, ranging from traditional contact (or “collision”) sports like football and lacrosse to soccer, volleyball and dozens more.

And each year, as many as 300,000 young people sustain concussions from playing sports.

So while many of the parents of these kids may dream of their child becoming a professional athlete, there’s also an emerging need to learn more about the dangers of sports concussions.

It starts with understanding just how serious a concussion can be.

“A concussion is a mild, traumatic brain injury caused by a direct or an indirect blow to the head,” said Tim Kalkman, PA-C, CIC, concussion care expert with Shawnee Mission Health - Prairie Star. “An individual with a concussive injury may appear disoriented, confused or may have loss of consciousness.”

Whether it’s caused by a direct or indirect blow to the head, a concussion causes the brain to be jostled against the skull, temporarily interfering with the way the brain works.

Of course, collision sports like football and lacrosse are what most people think of because they’re the most common sports in which kids experience concussions. But believe it or not, the next sport with the highest incidence of concussion is girls’ soccer.

To help cope with concussions in youth sports, every state in the U.S. – including Kansas and Missouri – has now passed a “return to play” law, aimed at reducing youth sports concussions.

The law includes rules calling for immediate removal of injured athletes from play, prohibiting same-day activity after a suspected concussion and requiring a doctor’s clearance to return.

What if you think your child has had a concussion?

“The best advice is to hold the child out of any sport or exercise activity immediately and for the remainder of that day for evaluation and to rest. A child who continues to be disoriented despite rest, develops vomiting or complains of persistent or worsening head or neck pain should be evaluated as soon as possible by a medical provider,” said Kalkman.

“Allow them plenty of time to rest but do not let them over-sleep,” said Kalkman, “keeping longduration sleep for nighttime. Work

Often, the visual demands at school can cause further headaches and symptoms of a concussion to be more prevalent.

“A child's ability to concentrate and stay focused is diminished,” said Kalkman, “and they are often sensitive to lights, sounds and movement in the school setting.”

It’s all about your child’s long-term health.

It’s worth noting that almost no sport is free of a concussion hazard, and playing sports can help kids stay fit, build character and develop social skills.

Still, many parents may wonder if it is wise to let their children participate in sports like football and soccer, in which head injuries are most common.

Whether you’re considering a new activity for your child or are already a part of a sport squad, you can reduce the likelihood of your child experiencing a head injury.

For example, ask school officials or the coach what measures are taken to protect their athletes. In addition, parents may want to consider noncontact sports, especially for children at a younger age.

“I’m not a fan of playing tackle football before junior high,” said Kalkan. “At that age, most kids aren’t coordinated enough to know how to fall correctly, and their brains and neck strength are still developing.”

CHILDBIRTH REFRESHER AND VBAC A refresher class for parents to focus on this pregnancy while reflecting on the last. A certified childbirth instructor will review stages of labor, what to expect at the hospital, positions and comfort measures, medications and more.

Also includes topics specific to anyone interested in having a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) with your upcoming birth.

Cost: $30 KIDS AND K9S You made it through the pregnancy and infancy but now the family dog is having to deal with a child who is mobile! This class will give you the tools to institute rules, routines and management practices that will keep both the children and the family dog happy, healthy and safe.

CHILDBIRTH – FIVE-WEEK Our five-week comprehensive childbirth class series covers stages of labor, comfort measures and birthing positions, what to expect at the hospital, medications and much more. Partners will have an opportunity to experience pregnancy by wearing the Empathy Belly. Includes Newborn Care class and a tour of the Shawnee Mission Birth Center.

Cost: $65 CHILDBIRTH: NATURAL STRATEGIES Our one-time class is a perfect addition to Childbirth one-day or five-week classes. A certified instructor provides an opportunity for you to create your birth vision by clarifying values, writing a birth plan and practicing additional relaxation and comfort measures. Participants need to complete a childbirth preparation class prior to attendance.

Cost: $30 CHILDBIRTH PREPARATION ONLINE This method of preparing for childbirth might be a good fit if you prefer to learn at your own pace, have been placed on bed rest, or if your work/travel schedules prevent you from committing to a traditional class. NEWBORN CARE Learn what to expect at the hospital, the importance of newborn tests and procedures, baby basics such as bathing, diapering, cord care, safe sleep, calming techniques, Happiest Baby on the Block and much more.
