SAUK VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE | BUDGET

Sauk moves ahead in the red

Deficit budget approved, but college is in a good position to deal with its bottom line BY CHRISTOPHER HEIMERMAN cheimerman@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5523 CHeimerman_SVM

DIXON – Sauk Valley Community College is loading up on belt-tightening options, in case the deficit budget its Board of Trustees approved doesn’t soon take on a sunnier outlook. The school received about $350,000 less

in enrollment reimbursement from the state than anticipated a month ago. As of right now, it’s also getting just $525,000 in state aid for fiscal year 2017, about onethird of the 70 percent funding it factored into the preliminary budget the board read June 2. That’s due to the stopgap measure signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner June 29. The bottom line is a unanimously

approved fiscal year 2017 budget with a $1.9 million shortfall. Rather than wait on the state, the school has allocated $100,000-plus it can pull from its health insurance reserves, if needed. It’s not filling several positions – including a maintenance worker, a student services worker and, most recently, an HVAC instructor. SAUK continued on A54

ROCK FALLS – Street resurfacing work set to begin throughout the city today has been delayed a bit. The county notified the city Monday that its crews won’t be able to start the primer work until Friday. That means residents can park on the affected streets until work begins Friday. Beginning Friday and continuing through the targeted completion date of Aug. 5, parking won’t be allowed in the areas on the work list. The city also asks that vehicles be parked at least 10 feet from the roads from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the workdays. No roadwork will be done on Saturdays and Sundays. ROADWORK continued on A54

TWIN CITIES

Archery club set its sights on a new location, and found it. Now, it’s setting its sights on growing its membership BY RACHEL RODGERS rrodgers@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5529 @rj_rodgers

DIXON – Sauk Valley Archers has taken aim on a new outdoor range. The group’s target came in the form of 35 acres off of Colony Road near the St. Marys Cement Plant just outside of city limits. The club began leasing the land from St. Marys in early spring and hosted its first 3-D shoot event last month where 70 archers from throughout the region let loose their arrows onto 30 different targets. “People really enjoy the camaraderie, getting outdoors and the challenge of it all,” club President Neil Powell said. “It’s just plain fun.” Club leadership and volunteers worked on transforming the woods and field into a range throughout the spring, creating a path to 30 different lanes and clearing space for the practice range.
