High cholesterol, also known as hyperlipidemia, is a common problem among adults. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says roughly one in three adults has a total cholesterol level above 200, which is considered to be elevated. Having high cholesterol can potentially contribute to plaque deposits in the arteries, which could lead to blockages and cardiovascular disease over time.
It’s important to note that high cholesterol can affect children and teenagers as well as adults. Although diet may be a contributing factor, high cholesterol in kids largely is due to genetic factors, says the Cleveland Clinic. In fact, kids with high cholesterol commonly have a biological parent with a history of elevated cholesterol or one who needs medications to keep their cholesterol at a safe level. Obesity, diabetes and certain medications also can raise cholesterol levels in children. There usually are no signs of high cholesterol in younger people. Therefore, pediatricians may need to request that routine blood work include a lipid panel. According to MedlinePlus, the first test should be between ages nine and 11. Children should have the test again every five years. Some children may be tested more frequently if there is a family history of high cholesterol.
Medical providers typically recommend lifestyle changes, such as dietary adjustments and increased physical exercise as first-line treatment for high cholesterol in children. When determining whether or not to prescribe cholesterol-lowering medication to children, doctors typically follow the expert guidance of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the American Heart Association. Typically, an LDL level higher than 190 with no additional risk factors for cardiovascular disease is the initial milestone for medication use. If other conditions are present, such as risk factors for cardiovascular disease or a parent with a history of heart disease, an even lower LDL level may lead doctors to prescribe medication. It’s important to realize that high cholesterol is not just a condition of adulthood. Teenagers and young children also can have high cholesterol. Treatment depends on risk factors and the advice of professionals.
CGH Medical Center has introduced the Intuitive da Vinci 5® (DV5)—the most advanced robotic surgical system available. Designed for minimally invasive general surgery, the DV5 expands CGH’s capabilities and is built to improve patient outcomes and enhance care.

“The da Vinci surgical system is more than advanced technology,” said Dr. Paul Steinke, CGH President and CEO. “It’s a commitment to providing our patients with less pain, faster recovery and exceptional precision. This marks a new chapter in surgical care for the Sauk Valley and surrounding communities, and we are proud to offer this advanced, minimally invasive option close to home.”
Wellness is an oft-heard buzzword among those looking to live a healthy lifestyle, but it’s also something of a mystery. People aspiring to be the best version of themselves with a strong body and mind may be curious about how various wellness strategies can help them achieve that goal.
The Global Wellness Institute defines wellness as the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health. Some experts break wellness down into four categories: spiritual, social, psychological, and physical. Similarly, the Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program says wellness is promoted through self-care, including four key strategies: rest, relaxation, replenishment, and release.
Although the terms wellness, health and well-being often are interchanged, each of these factors are their own unique entity.
The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign says health often is defined as the absence of illness and disease, so various physical, social and mental conditions fall under the health umbrella.
Although there are different definitions for well-being, the term generally refers to living a fulfilling life in which a person feels content. The World Health Organization says well-being is “a positive state experienced by individuals and societies.”
The whole-health organization Take Care® says wellness refers to the pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that create health. Wellness acts as the plan or individual pursuit to achieve health and thus a greater sense of well-being.
Better understanding of the niche components of overall health and wellness can help people enjoy physical and mental benefits and live more fulfilling lives.
The following are some avenues for pursuing wellness.
• Self-care
• Routine medical exams and immunizations
• Healthy diet and exercise habits
• Being aware of one’s feelings
• Cultivating an optimistic outlook
• Learning ways to avoid or manage stress
• Being open to new ideas and perspectives
• Engaging in social activities, volunteerism and contributing to the community
• Finding meaning or purpose
The concepts of wellnesss, well-being and health seem interchangeable, but there are some distinctions that set them apart. A combination of all three ultimately adds up to a healthier individual.

When you think of sunglasses, you probably picture something stylish for summer—maybe a bold frame or a cool mirrored tint. And while it’s true they can tie a look together, sunglasses are also one of the most important tools for protecting your long-term vision.
Just like your skin, your eyes are vulnerable to ultraviolet (UV) rays. Over time, exposure to UV light—especially without proper protection—can lead to:
• Cataracts (clouding of the lens)
• Macular degeneration (central vision loss)
• Photokeratitis (a painful sunburn on the eye)
• Pterygium (a tissue growth on the white of the eye that can spread to the cornea)
And while many sunglasses reduce brightness, not all block UV effectively. In fact, darker lenses without UV filters can do more harm by causing your pupils to dilate, allowing more UV light in. Look for lenses labeled UV400 or 100% UVA/UVB protection—this is the gold standard.
If you wear glasses, you’ve probably struggled with the sun at some point—squinting, swapping glasses, or giving up and going without. At UseMyFrame.com, we make custom prescription sunglasses so you don’t have to compromise. We can create:
• Single vision prescription sunglasses
• Bifocals or progressives for distance and reading in one lens
• Prescription readers for relaxing outdoors
• High-prescription lenses, even with prism or other complex features
And we offer a wide range of lens materials and enhancements, including:
• Polarized lenses to reduce glare while driving, fishing, or boating
• Transitions® lenses that darken automatically in sunlight
• Mirror coatings and a variety of tints (gray, brown, G-15 green, and more)
• Impact-resistant materials like Trivex and polycarbonate Already have a frame you love? No problem. You can send it to us, and we’ll make prescription sunglasses that fit perfectly.
Whether you need vision correction or not, a good pair of sunglasses should include:
• UV400 or 100% UVA/UVB protection
• Scratch-resistant, optical-quality lenses
• Full coverage to block light from the sides and top
• A comfortable, secure fit for your everyday activities
• Optional polarization to reduce surface glare and improve contrast
And don’t forget—quality sunglasses aren’t just for summer. UV exposure happens year-round, especially around water, snow, or light-colored pavement.
Sunglasses are more than a fashion statement—they’re a practical investment in your vision. Cheap sunglasses might look the part, but only optical-grade lenses with proper coatings offer the real protection your eyes need.
At UseMyFrame.com, we make prescription and nonprescription sunglasses with the same care and quality we apply to every pair of lenses we produce. Whether you want to upgrade your favorite frame or choose something brand new, we’re here to help you see comfortably and confidently—no squinting required.
There are many types of hearing aids. So which is best for you? Find out what to consider when choosing a hearing aid.
Maybe you’ve thought about getting a hearing aid, but you have questions. How will a hearing aid look? Will using a hearing aid really help? You may find answers when you know more about the following:
• Hearing aid choices.
• What to look for when buying a hearing aid.
• Whether you need one or two hearing aids.
• How to get used to a hearing aid.
Hearing aids don’t restore full hearing. They can improve hearing by making sounds louder. This is called amplification.
All hearing aids use the same basic parts. Hearing aids carry sounds from outside your ear into your ear to make sounds louder.
Most hearing aids are digital. All run on batteries. Some use batteries that you can recharge.
Small microphones collect sounds around you. A computer chip changes the sounds into digital code. Hearing aids adjust the sound based on your hearing loss, what you need to hear, and how loud the sounds around you are.
Hearing aids turn up the signals and change them back into sound waves. The sound waves go into your ears through speakers, also called receivers.
Hearing aids vary a lot in price, size, special features, and the way they’re placed in the ears. Using two hearing aids may help you hear better, especially if you have hearing loss in both ears.
Most people get hearing aids programmed with a prescription for their hearing loss. Adults in the U.S. age 18 and older with mild to moderate hearing loss can get hearing aids without a prescription.
Hearing aids you get without a prescription come in fewer styles and offer fewer features than prescription hearing aids do. Talk to your healthcare professional about the pros and cons of both.
You can get hearing aids that don’t need a prescription without a hearing exam. But it’s good to get a hearing exam before getting any hearing aids.
When looking for a hearing aid, learn about your choices to know what type of hearing aid will work best for you. Also:

When your feelings start running the show, hit pause and give them a name. “I’m anxious about this deadline.” “I’m frustrated because I feel unheard.” It might sound simple, but putting emotions into words actually helps your brain shift from a reactive state to a calmer, more thoughtful one. Think of it as turning the volume down on stress so you can decide what to do next, instead of letting your emotions steer the wheel.

Eating healthy is crucial for overall well-being, offering numerous benefits like disease prevention, increased energy, and improved mood. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains provides the nutrients your body needs to function optimally and can reduce the risk of chronic illnesses.
HERE’S A MORE DETAILED LOOK AT THE IMPORTANCE OF EATING HEALTHY:
DISEASE PREVENTION:
Reduces risk of chronic diseases: A healthy diet can significantly lower the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and certain cancers.
Manages existing conditions: Eating well can help manage conditions like high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
PHYSICAL HEALTH:
Weight management: A balanced diet helps maintain a healthy weight, which is important for overall health and preventing weight-related issues.
Stronger bones and muscles: Nutrients like calcium and protein are essential for strong bones and muscles, contributing to better mobility and preventing falls.
Increased energy and productivity: When your body receives the nutrients it needs, you experience higher energy levels and improved cognitive function, leading to increased productivity.
Improved immune function: A healthy diet supports a strong immune system, making you less susceptible to infections and illnesses.
Improved mood: Food choices affect brain chemistry, and a healthy diet can contribute to better mood and emotional well-being.
Reduced risk of anxiety and depression: Studies suggest that a healthy diet can play a role in reducing the risk of mental health conditions, according to Everyday Health.
Enhanced cognitive function: A healthy diet provides the nutrients that support brain health, potentially improving focus, memory, and overall cognitive function.
Healthy pregnancies and breastfeeding: Proper nutrition is vital for both the mother and the developing baby during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Supports healthy aging: A healthy diet can help maintain physical and cognitive function as you age, contributing to a higher quality of life.
Improved digestive health: A diet rich in fiber can promote healthy digestion and prevent constipation.
Get a health checkup. See your healthcare professional to make sure that what’s causing your hearing loss can’t be treated. Causes that can be treated include having an earwax buildup or an infection.
Get a referral to a good audiologist. An audiologist is a healthcare professional who works with hearing issues. If you don’t know a good audiologist, ask your main healthcare professional to suggest one. An audiologist checks your hearing, helps you choose the best hearing aid for you, fits the hearing aid to you, and programs it to meet your needs.
Ask about a trial period. You often get a trial period when you buy a hearing aid. It may take you a while to get used to the device and know whether it’s right for you.
When you get the hearing aid, get some things in writing. These include what the trial costs, whether this amount goes toward the final cost of the hearing aid, and how much you can get back if you return the hearing aid during the trial period.
Think about future needs. Ask whether you can raise the power of the hearing aid you get. Then you can still use it if your hearing loss gets worse. Hearing aids don’t work forever, but they should last about five years.
Check for a warranty. Make sure the warranty covers parts and labor for a certain period in case something goes wrong
with your hearing aid. Some audiologists may include office visits or professional services in the warranty. Ask if you can add time to the warranty period.
Beware of claims that sound too good to be true. Hearing aids can’t restore all your hearing or erase all background noise. Beware of ads or sellers who claim hearing aids can do more than they can. The National Council on Aging rates hearing aids every year.
Plan for the cost. A hearing aid can cost from about $1,000 to several thousand dollars. Hearing aids you get without a prescription tend to cost less.
Professional fees, remote controls, and other hearing aid features may cost extra. Talk to your audiologist about your needs and what to expect.
Some private insurance policies cover part or all the cost of hearing aids. Check your policy to be sure. Medicare doesn’t cover the cost of hearing aids for adults. In many states, private insurers must pay for hearing aids for children.
Some civic organizations and hearing associations give financial help for hearing aids or can help you find financial help. If you’re a veteran, you may be able to get hearing aids at no cost through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

At UseMyFrame.com, we see a lot of customers after their cataract surgery. Many are thrilled with their new vision — but others come to us frustrated, confused, and sometimes even a little defeated. A common thread we hear often involves patients who were steered into having one eye set for distance and one for near vision during their lens implant surgery — a technique often called monovision or blended vision.
On paper, it sounds great:
“One eye lets you see far away, one eye lets you read up close, and you won’t need glasses anymore!”
For some patients, that’s true. But for many others, it doesn’t work out quite so simply — especially if they weren’t fully warned about what this approach can mean in everyday life.
Why do surgeons recommend monovision?
The idea behind monovision is to reduce your need for glasses. After the cataracts are removed, the surgeon implants an artificial lens (called an IOL) in each eye. By setting one eye for distance and the other for near, your brain is supposed to “blend” the two images together, allowing you to function fairly well at most distances without needing glasses. It’s a tempting option — especially for patients who dread wearing reading glasses or progressive lenses.
The problem: your eyes aren’t always as willing as the brochure makes it sound.
While some patients adapt to monovision successfully, others struggle with:
• Loss of depth perception (critical for driving, steps, curbs, and even pouring liquids)
• Nighttime glare, halos, and starbursts (especially when driving at night)
• Difficulty with mid-range or intermediate tasks (such as computer screens)
• Visual fatigue or imbalance between the two eyes
• Loss of crisp detail for fine work (art, crafts, sewing, drawing, etc.)
We recently heard from a customer named Pat who does intricate artwork. The surgeon convinced her to set one eye for near and one for distance. Unfortunately, her “near” eye isn’t quite strong enough for the detail work she needs, so she still has to wear reading glasses anyway — exactly what she was hoping to avoid. Worse yet, the imbalance between the eyes has left her struggling with glares, night driving, and frustration that no one fully explained the possible downsides before surgery. And she’s not alone — we hear stories like Pat’s all the time.
The truth: monovision is not onesize-fits-all.
Monovision may work well for certain patients who:
• Have mild prescriptions
• Rarely drive at night
• Don’t do much close-up or precision work
• Have previously tried monovision contact lenses successfully before surgery
But for others — especially artists, craftspeople, avid readers, frequent drivers, or anyone who needs sharp vision at multiple distances — it may not be the ideal choice.
What can you do if you’re facing cataract surgery?
1. Have an honest conversation with your surgeon.
Ask about both the benefits and the possible drawbacks of monovision.
2 If possible, trial monovision contact lenses before surgery.
This can help simulate how your brain might handle
the difference.
3 Don’t feel pressured to avoid glasses entirely. Many patients achieve better overall vision with both eyes corrected equally for distance, and then using glasses (or progressive lenses) for reading, driving, or detailed work.
4 Consider your lifestyle needs first. Night driving, fine art, sewing, computer work, and other visual demands often require more balanced vision than monovision offers.
And if you’re already struggling after surgery?
If you’ve already had cataract surgery and are finding that monovision isn’t working well for you — you’re not alone. We work with patients every day to help improve their vision with properly made prescription lenses, specialty coatings, and adjustments tailored to their specific post-surgery situation.
While we can’t undo what was done surgically, carefully designed glasses can often help improve sharpness, balance, and reduce some of the visual discomfort you may be experiencing.
Bottom line:
Monovision can be a useful tool — but it’s not automatically the best solution for everyone. If you’re considering cataract surgery, make sure you fully understand both sides of the decision. And if you’ve already had surgery and feel frustrated, know that there may still be solutions to help you get back to seeing — and living — more comfortably.
Being a mom is one of the most rewarding and sometimes overwhelming roles a person can have. OSF HealthCare Saint Katharine Medical Center understands that parenting, especially in the early years, can feel isolating. That’s why it’s dedicated to building a stronger support system for moms in the Sauk Valley area through free, welcoming programs that focus on connection, encouragement and health.
One of the center’s most popular programs is the OSF Saint Katharine Moms’ Group, now held at the Dixon Family YMCA. The group meets on the second Friday of each month and is open to expectant mothers and mothers with young children. It offers a relaxed, judgment-free space for women to share stories, ask questions and build friendships.
Each gathering features fun crafts, snacks and plenty of time to socialize. Children and siblings are welcome to join if they are feeling healthy. The new YMCA location provides outdoor space where moms and kids can enjoy some fresh air. The group has grown consistently, with about ten to 20 moms now attending each session.
“Having children is a life-changing experience that can seem overwhelming at times,” said Gwen Strum, RN, one of the group’s organizers. “We want moms to feel empowered, connected and supported.”
Crafts like keepsake footprint art are very popular, and each
meeting emphasizes fun, friendship and useful tips about parenting and child development.
For moms looking to get out and stay active, Moms on the Move is another excellent free program. Held on the first and third Mondays of each month, this walking group meets at the new Dixon walking path. They take a 1.5-mile stroll that’s stroller-friendly and suitable for people of all fitness levels.
The walk provides more than just a workout. It’s an opportunity for moms to discuss parenting, exchange ideas and form lasting friendships while enjoying fresh air and movement.
“These groups have helped moms form lasting friendships,”
said Strum. “Motherhood can be isolating, and we want to change that.”
Both programs are free to attend, and parents are encouraged to RSVP online at osfsaintkatharine.org.
A Sock and Shoe Drive for Local Students
OSF Saint Katharine isn’t just supporting moms. It’s also helping local kids start the school year confidently. The OSF Saint Katharine Foot & Ankle Center led a sock and shoe drive for Dixon Public Schools, collecting new items for students from preschool through 12th grade.
“Proper footwear is essential for a child’s physical development and overall well-being,” said Nathan Mauren, DPM, at OSF Saint Katharine Foot & Ankle Center. Supportive shoes help prevent foot pain, improve posture and lower the risk of injury, especially for active, growing kids.
But the benefits extend beyond physical needs.
“Something as simple as a new pair of shoes can make a world of difference for a student,” said Brandon Gumbiner, MD. “It’s about more than just footwear. It’s about confidence and giving every child a strong start to the school year.”
Saint Katharine Supports the Community
OSF Saint Katharine is deeply dedicated to serving the entire community, and its efforts extend well beyond the clinic walls. Here’s a look at other programs and events making an impact:
A $5,000 donation helped establish a mini food pantry at the Dixon Library to provide food for those in need.
Staff organized a collection drive for the United Way’s Summer Eats program, gathering ready-to-eat items like mac and cheese cups and ramen noodles for kids during summer break.
Palliative care is a specialized medical care approach focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness. Its primary goal is to improve the quality of life for both the patient and their family. This type of care is appropriate at any stage of a serious illness and can be provided alongside curative treatment.
The concept of palliative care has its roots in the hospice movement, which began in the 1960s with the work of Dame Cicely Saunders in the United Kingdom. Saunders founded St. Christopher’s Hospice in London in 1967, which combined medical, emotional, and spiritual support for patients in the final stages of terminal illness. This pioneering approach emphasized the importance of pain management, compassionate care, and the dignity of the patient. Gaffey Home Nursing & Hospice recognized an unmet need in the Sauk Valley with Dr. Mir Alikhan 5 years ago. Many cancer patients were having symptoms needing professional management, for example iv hydration, pain and nausea management during and following chemotherapy. Care that previously required an emergency room or hospital visit and could be provided in the home with professional nurses limiting exposure for these cancer patients while on chemotherapy. The goal of palliative care is help alleviate a person’s suffering, reduce symptoms, and improve their quality of life over time. Palliative care helps people live their best lives for as long as possible. Since then, palliative care has evolved and expanded beyond hospices to become an integral part of healthcare systems worldwide. It is now recognized as a critical component of comprehensive care for patients facing lifelimiting illnesses, ensuring they receive holistic support tailored to their individual needs.
Palliative care is for individuals who are suffering from serious illnesses that significantly impact their quality of life. To qualify for palliative care, a patient does not need to have a terminal diagnosis, but they must be experiencing distressing symptoms that require specialized management. Palliative care is interdisciplinary, which means that it involves multiple types of doctors and other care providers. These providers at Gaffey include physicians, nurses, social workers, spiritual leaders, and other services as identified such as bathing services, physical therapy or occupational therapy, all focused on improving the quality of life while undergoing treatment for serious illness. Cancer is not the only diagnosis covered; any life limiting disease can be managed with palliative care. Palliative care differs from Hospice care. Palliative care can be provided while completing curative measures for the disease present. Hospice requires that life is limited to 6 months and no further curative treatment is offered. Palliative Care may lead to Hospice and Gaffey offers a transition program, so patients do not need to get all new staff, the nurses and caregivers are all cross trained to provide individualized care.
Various healthcare providers, including Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance companies, and sometimes even charitable organizations or hospices, may cover the costs associated with palliative care. In many cases, insurance plans will cover palliative care services if they are deemed medically necessary by a healthcare provider. Gaffey Home Nursing & Hospice utilizes Medicare and insurance for those covered. For those patients without coverage Gaffey offers care through the Gaffey Hospice Foundation, which pays for the care from donations and fund-raising efforts. No patient is turned away from Gaffey Home Nursing & Hospice.

Have you or a loved one struggled with depression that hasn’t improved with medication or therapy? Depression is caused by reduced activity in the areas of the brain that regulate mood. NeuroStar TMS “wakes up” those areas with focused magnetic pulses to help the brain function how it should. You may have heard of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). But what exactly is it, and how does it help?
TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is a non-invasive treatment that uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. These pulses can “wake up” underactive brain regions, helping to improve symptoms—especially in depression. It is not a drug, “shock” therapy, or surgery. It is a safe, effective treatment for depression without the common side effects of medication.
• No surgery
• No anesthesia
• You’re awake and alert during treatment
TMS is FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression, meaning depression that hasn’t improved after trying medications or therapy. It’s also being used for:
• Depression with anxiety
• OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
• Adolescents (15-21) depression TMS is ideal for people who’ve had limited success with antidepressants or experienced side effects.
• You sit in a comfortable chair.
• A cushioned coil is precisely placed against your head while magnetic pulses deliver the therapy to the correct location that regulates mood in your brain.
• You may feel a tapping, tingling, or warming sensation where the coil is positioned. This is temporary and typically subsides with subsequent treatments.
• Each session lasts 20–40 minutes.
• Most people have daily sessions, 5 days per week for 4–6 weeks.
• No recovery time needed — you can drive yourself home.
How Effective Is TMS?
• A study of real-world outcomes reported an 83% response rate which means patients experienced notable relief, and a 62% remission rate which means their depression effectively went away.
• Some start to see improvement in a few weeks, others take longer. Improvements can include changes in mood, fewer days of depression, and increased desire to engage with other people more often. In fact, your friends and family may notice your results before you do!
• Completing the full treatment course gives the best chance for delivering long-lasting relief from depression.
TMS is well tolerated. Possible side effects include:
• Mild scalp discomfort or headaches
• Facial muscle twitching during the session
• Fatigue or lightheadedness
Serious side effects are rare, but there is a very small risk of seizure (less than 0.1%).
TMS represents hope for many people struggling with depression or other difficult-to-treat conditions. If you or someone you care about has not found relief with traditional treatments, talking with a mental health professional about TMS could open new possibilities. As research continues, TMS may become an option for even more people and conditions in the future. Always consult with a qualified provider to discuss risks, benefits, and whether TMS is the right fit for your individual needs.
If you have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to Path to Healing, who can guide you further. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, and exploring all your options is an important step toward better mental health.
You may be a good candidate if:
• You’ve tried 2 or more medications for depression with little relief.
• You’ve had side effects from medications.
• You want a non-drug option that doesn’t require anesthesia.
• You can attend daily sessions for several weeks. A provider will do a full evaluation to make sure it’s a safe option.
For more information, contact Path to Healing or scan the QR code in the upper left on page 19 to answer a few questions to see if you qualify.

Understanding your body’s inner workings is important for maintaining good health and wellness. One of the ways to gain insight into what is happening with your body is through regular blood tests.
Blood tests are routine procedures that involve drawing a small amount of blood from your body, typically from a vein in your arm, and analyzing it to check for certain diseases, conditions, or organ functionality. They are an integral part of a health check-up, and they provide doctors with valuable information about your overall health.
Regular blood tests are not only for those who currently have health issues. They are also beneficial for those who are healthy and want to stay that way. Blood tests can detect potential health problems before they become serious and tell you if you need to make any lifestyle changes to maintain optimal health.
Furthermore, regular blood tests can help you understand how well your body responds to prescribed medications, whether you have allergies or are at risk of certain genetic disorders. Regular blood tests serve as a window into your body’s health, providing a wealth of information that can guide your healthcare decisions.
Regular blood tests are crucial for several reasons. These include: Disease
Firstly, they can help detect diseases early, before they cause serious health problems.
Diseases like diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, and liver disease can often be diagnosed through blood tests before they start causing noticeable symptoms. Early detection can lead to more effective treatment and prevent long-term complications.
Secondly, blood tests can help monitor chronic conditions. If you already have a chronic health condition, regular blood tests can help your doctor monitor its progress and adjust your treatment plan if necessary.
This is particularly important for conditions like diabetes, where regular monitoring of blood glucose levels can help prevent complications.
Lastly, regular blood tests can help assess your overall health. They can provide information about your heart, liver, and
kidney function, as well as your cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels, and more.
This can help you and your doctor make informed decisions about your lifestyle and treatment options and help you better understand your own body.
A routine blood test typically includes a complete blood count (CBC) and a basic metabolic panel. The CBC looks at the different types of cells in your blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. This can help diagnose conditions like anemia, infections, and certain types of cancer.
The basic metabolic panel checks for different chemicals in your blood, such as glucose (sugar), electrolytes, and enzymes. This can help diagnose conditions like diabetes, kidney disease, and liver disease.
In addition, a routine blood test might also check your cholesterol levels, thyroid function, and other aspects of your health. However, the specifics can vary depending on your age, sex, and overall health.
Understanding your blood test results can be tricky, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the medical terms used. However, with a little guidance, you can learn to understand your results and what they mean for your health.
Firstly, you need to understand that blood tests measure
the levels of various substances in your blood. These can include various types of cells, chemicals, nutrients, and other substances. Each of these has a normal range; if your results fall within this range, it usually means you are healthy.
However, if your results are outside the normal range, it could indicate a problem. For example, high cholesterol levels could indicate a risk of heart disease, while low levels of certain types of blood cells could indicate anemia. It’s important to remember that abnormal results don’t always mean that you have a disease. Medications, diet, physical activity, and other factors could also cause them.
Always talk to your doctor to understand what your results mean.
Routine blood work is a crucial tool for maintaining good health. It can provide a wealth of information about your overall health and help detect diseases early before they cause serious health problems.
However, understanding your blood test results can be confusing. That’s why talking to your doctor or a healthcare professional is important. They can help you understand your results and the steps you should take next.
Remember, routine blood work is not just for those with health problems. It’s also beneficial for healthy people who want to stay that way. So make sure to get your blood tested regularly and stay informed about your health.

Stronger for Life: A Muscle-Centric Approach to Better Health at 7:24 Fitness on the Rock
When most people think of improving their health, they often picture cutting calories, cardio machines, and stepping on the scale. But at 7:24 Fitness on the Rock, we believe there’s a better, smarter way to approach wellness—one that’s rooted in building muscle, not just losing weight.
We’re proud to be your local functional fitness facility, right here in the heart of the community. Our gym offers small group training, personal coaching, and customized programs designed to support real people with real goals—whether that’s more energy, fewer aches and pains, or simply keeping up with your kids or grandkids.
Muscle isn’t just for athletes or bodybuilders—it’s your best insurance policy for aging well, staying mobile, and feeling strong in everyday life. A muscle-focused approach helps:
• Boost metabolism and burn more fat at rest
• Improve joint support and reduce risk of injury
• Protect bone density, especially as we age
• Regulate blood sugar and insulin for better long-term health
• Support mood, confidence, and mental clarity
Too often, people chase quick weight loss, only to lose strength and slow their metabolism. At our gym, we shift the focus to building lean muscle through resistance training, functional movements, and sustainable nutrition strategies that support your body—not deprive it.
At 7:24 Fitness, you’ll find more than a place to work out. You’ll find a team of experienced coaches, a supportive environment, and a group of like-minded members who care more about strength and wellness than fad diets and scale obsession.
Whether you’re just getting started, getting back on track, or looking to level up, we meet you where you are. From seniors working on balance and joint support to busy parents squeezing in a 30-minute session, we’ve got you covered.
We also offer nutrition guidance, mobility classes, and resources like our favorite clinical-grade collagen supplements to support joint, skin, and muscle recovery.
If you’re tired of the yo-yo approach and ready to feel stronger, healthier, and more confident in your body, we’d love to connect. Stop by the gym, try out a class, or message us on social media. Let’s build a better foundation—not just for summer, but for life.

Many times, obvious symptoms tell us when something is wrong with our health. But other times, we may feel fine and not realize there’s an underlying problem.
That’s why an annual wellness visit conducted by a primary care provider (PCP) is so important.
At OSF HealthCare, you can find a PCP who will guide and encourage you throughout your health and wellness journey. Whether it’s getting preventive care, a referral to a specialist or simply having a dedicated provider who makes you their primary concern, OSF can help.
Schedule an appointment today. Find a primary care provider at osfhealthcare.org/primary or by scanning the QR code.
