Avoiding trouble down the road City soliciting bids to study what needs to be done to head off problems in areas around Fargo Creek BY RACHEL RODGERS rrodgers@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5529 @rj_rodgers
DIXON – The city is taking steps to make sure there isn’t a repeat of last year’s West Seventh Street collapse. City Manager Cole O’Donnell has sent
out bid requests for an engineering study on city infrastructure along Fargo Creek to look for other weak spots that could prove troublesome in the future. “The study will deal with key issues of hydraulics and flow of the creek that contribute to flooding,” he said. “The report is to include suggested fixes and
rough estimates for future budgeting.” Mayor Li Arellano Jr. said Fargo Creek includes a west tributary in southwest Dixon toward Interstate 88 and an east tributary that flows out toward Chicago Avenue. They meet at Highland Avenue about a block from the Dixon Township Office, 315 Highland Ave.
Without steady water flow, the creek is dry most of the time, but it can become a torrent when filled with extensive water runoff, he said. “When we get a lot of rainfall, there can be a lot of power behind that water,” Arellano said. FARGO continued on A54

Splashdown!
Inside Not everyone made a splash Thursday. Some folks headed to the Rock River to keep cool. Page A3 Sometimes the heat and humidity can feel like a big wet blanket. Wonder what made it so wet? Blame it on the corn. Page A5
With a little friendly coercing, Drew Dawson gets Clay Kennay to stand still and get a good drenching at the Ashton splash pad Thursday morning. With temperatures topping 90 degrees, it probably didn’t take much coaxing, though. Places like the splash pad provided much-needed relief from the oppressive heat wave that blanketed the area. Temperatures are forecast to stay in the 90s at least through Sunday, and the upper 80s after that. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning through 7 p.m. Saturday. According to NWS, the “prolonged period of heat and humidity will increase the risk for heat exhaustion or heat stroke.” Click this story at saukvalley.com to see more photos of kids keeping cool.
