STERLING – Beer and wine are available at the Northland Mall for the first time since the Diamond Dave’s Taco Co. franchise left town. The Kopper Kitchen Restaurant, formerly known as The Spot, was reopened in Decem-
ber by owners Mike and Judy Dalipi. Mike’s father, Benny, had opened the restaurant in 2006. The Dalipis announced plans to sell beer and wine when the eatery was reopened, and the liquor license was granted May 23. Mike said he decided to wait for a while before opening the taps. Bigger isn’t better for park board
Come sit for a spell
Board passes on idea of adding members BY RACHEL RODGERS rrodgers@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5529 @rj_rodgers
DIXON – The Park Board decided to nix further discussion on expanding its ranks to seven members Wednesday. The group originally introduced the matter May 25 with the idea that adding two members might bring a higher attendance at meetings and allow more representation for the park district. The measure prompted mixed views from board members, and after further reviewing the idea, they came to a consensus to abandon the proposal, board President Shane Miller said. BOARD continued on A114

DIXON – Local lawmakers are concerned with the state’s top financial steward being able to adequately perform his duties amid questions about his own spending. Illinois Auditor General Frank Mautino’s campaign spending during his 24-year-tenure as a Democratic state representative from Spring Valley has become the focus of investigations by both the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the State Board of Elections. The state and federal probes have delved into more than $200,000 spent in campaign funds for gas and car repairs at Happy’s Super Service in Spring Valley during a 10-year span and more than $250,000 in payments to Spring Valley City Bank since 1999.
