DIXON – In about a week, both the Dixon school district and the Dixon Educational Support Personnel Association will file their final contract offers with the state. Those offers will be released to the public 7 days after the State of Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board receives them both, said John Brosnan, special counsel to the state agency. The negotiations between the school district and DESPA, the union that represents teacher Mindy aides and assisDonoho tants, reached an impasse Wednesday night after nearly 18 months of negotiations. Dixon teacher aides and assistants have been working without a contract since June 2012. After Wednesday night’s meeting, DESPA President Mindy Donoho didn’t say what the union’s next move would be.

STERLING – Seasonal Sights and Sounds, Sterling’s annual holiday celebration, will begin officially with the lighting of the city Christmas tree at 5:30 p.m. today at Grandon Civic Center. The popular Running of the Santas and 1-mile fun run, and the Christmas parade, will follow. Downtown businesses remain open until later.
DIXON – The downtown’s 25th Annual Christmas Walk will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, beginning with the tree lighting ceremony at KSB Hospital, the arrival of Santa Claus, and songs by the Reagan Middle School Choir. A Lighted Holiday Parade will begin at 7 p.m., and the popular Great Snowball Drop will start at 8 p.m. Breakfast with Santa is set for 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday the Lee County Senior Center and Post House Ballroom, 100 W. Second St. Cost is $1.50 for children 9 and younger, and $3 for adults. The Dixon Municipal Band will have its annual holiday concert at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Historic Dixon Theatre, 114 S. Galena Ave.

DIXON – In the mood for some holiday music? Get your fill Sunday in Dixon. The Dixon High School Concert Band will present its holiday concert at 2 p.m. in the high school auditorium, 300 Lincoln Statue Drive. The concert is free and open to the public. The annual holiday bake sale and silent auction will be from noon to 5 p.m. in the cafeteria. The Sauk Valley Community College music department’s annual winter concert will begin at 7 p.m. at the Historic Dixon Theatre, 114 S. Galena Ave. Donations for theater renovations will be accepted at the door.
