ROCK FALLS | RIVERFRONT DEVELOPMENT

Hotel won’t open until spring Parent company’s new design prototype cited as main cause of delay BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier

ROCK FALLS – Construction delays continue at the site of the city’s new riverfront hotel, and the opening has been

backed up to spring. Developer Mark Landgraf, the construction team manager, said mandatory design plan changes instituted by Holiday Inn Express & Suites’ parent company, InterContinental Hotels Group, have

changed the timeline. “The delay is because of the enhanced designs from IHG,” Landgraf said. “We are confident we can be open April 1.” The company requires its new and existing hotels to incorporate at least some of the new

prototype into its design. The original compliance date was April 1, but because a large number of the company’s existing properties were undergoing renovations, IHG backed off the deadline. The Formula Blue design

marketing targets travelers who are looking for upscale hotel features without breaking the bank. As the name indicates, the decor includes many blue elements. HOTEL CONTINUED ON A2

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Eastland wins third title Retiring coach adds to record for championships BY TY REYNOLDS treynolds@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5554 @STyReynolds

NORMAL – It was a title at least 6 years in the making. Saturday at Redbird Arena, the Eastland volleyball team won the Class 1A state title with a 25-16, 25-16 win over Cissna Park. “This is so special for these girls to win their first state title,” longtime coach Kristy Pierce said, “and they earned this bit by bit. They didn’t shy away from this as their goal; they wrote it down in seventh grade, and they had the confidence and put in the hard work to do it. “We always say that you don’t win state championships, you earn them –

and this team earned every bit of this.” It’s Eastland’s third state title, with Pierce guiding the Cougars to backto-back championships in 2008 and 2009. Already the record-holder for number of 1A state titles with two, Pierce added her third in her final match as the Cougars’ coach. “She went out with a bang, and she’s so deserving of it,” said Eastland assistant coach Hope Linker, who was the setter on the two previous title teams. “She’s just a legacy, and there’s no other way this group of girls was going to let her go out.” Eastland (40-1-1) was dominant all postseason, never losing a game while taking seven consecutive matches in straight sets.
