Video gambling might be good for businesses, but is it good for their customers? BY CHRISTI WARREN cwarren@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5521
Editor’s Note: Margaret, the main subject of this story, was granted anonymity by Sauk Valley Media because of her career in social services. All Margaret wanted was to buy a soda. She’d heard that the gas station had gaming machines, and she knew well the pull they had on her, but it was just a Coke on a Saturday afternoon. Or maybe it was a water or an iced tea after work. Or a pack of gum. People have to go into convenience stores eventually, right? Margaret had been to therapy. She
knew the coping mechanisms. She hadn’t slipped up in quite some time, so what harm could be done by making one quick trip inside the store? But there were the lights and the sounds, and again that feeling; the rush of adrenaline, the racing heart. Funny what a few small slips of green cotton paper can do for a lazy pulse. So she walked toward those boxes with their buzzers and pulsing lights, just like ones she had sat before on thousands of occasions in the past three decades. That first time at the gas station, it was just $20. GAMBLING CONTINUED ON A5

Tipsy was the first bar in Dixon to install video gaming machines. Now, it’s one of more than 4,500 such locations in the state.
Holiday celebrations in Sterling and Rock Falls will include, for the first time, a joint parade. Three weeks of events are coordinated and hosted by the Rock Falls and Sauk Valley Chambers of Commerce and Sterling Main Street. Sterling Main Street Executive Director Janna Groharing said the idea of combining the Twin Cities’ parade efforts wasn’t really a new one. “The joint parade was something we’ve talked about on and off again for years,” Groharing said. “We thought we could build on the success of Bridge the Community and do a collaborative Christmas parade.” Both cities will usher in the holiday season with two big events on Nov. 22. The Sterling-Rock Falls Family YMCA’s annual Santa Run will be at 1 p.m., followed by the Twin Cities Holiday Parade at 1:30 p.m. PARADE CONTINUED ON A8

Instead, rate increase went from 58 to 102 percent after it was first submitted to state BY MATT MENCARINI mmencarini@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5529
DIXON – In 2009, MetLife raised the rate for long-term care insurance premiums in Illinois by 18 percent. Five years later there was another increase – 102 percent. Last weekend, Sauk Val-
ley Media reported on the increase after Dixon residents David and Cheryl Long, both 71, received a letter informing them that the premium for the coverage they’ve had for about 10 years had doubled. Information provided by the Illinois Department of Insurance on Thursday shed

According to a statement from the department and spokeswoman Kimberly Parker, “The law does not authorize this department to ‘approve’ or ‘deny’ rates if they have met the various statutory requirements.” PREMIUM CONTINUED ON A8
