Crundwell cash still coming in About $7.5M from recovery funds still Burke still taking time away unused; more could be on its way to city BY MATT MENCARINI mmencarini@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5529
DIXON – During the next few months, more money will be coming to the city as restitution that former Comptroller Rita Crundwell was ordered to pay. According to federal court records, she has a remaining balance of $44,452,965.36. The city has also received about $39 million in recovery funds, most of which came from a settlement with its former auditors and bank. After attorney fees, the city’s portion of the
settlement was $29,695,393. When the city receives checks for new recovery funds, they are deposited into the city’s capital fund, along with $7,532,213 remaining from other recovery fund sources, said Finance Director Paula Meyer. That money is earmarked and won’t be spent unless City Council approves it. The city used about $12.5 million to pay off debts, spent about $8.7 million to pay off internal loans, and moved $8 million into reserve funds in case the city is faced with an emergency.

DIXON – Mayor Jim Burke has been away from City Hall for about 2 weeks. Last week, city officials declined to comment on the reason Burke was taking time off, citing HIPPA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. City Administrator David Nord
on Friday said he expects Burke’s time away to continue, but didn’t have a time frame for a return. The next City Council meeting Dixon Mayor will be on Mon- Jim Burke day. If Burke can’t attend, Commissioner Dave Blackburn will serve as acting mayor.

DIXON – When Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka arrived Friday afternoon to visit Kreider Services, she wasn’t shy, and quickly got busy shaking hands and introducing herself. The trip to Dixon, she said, was an opportunity to connect with people. “When you see [places like Kreider], it’s not just a paper project anymore. It’s for real,” she said, after a brief walking tour, during which she met with building staff and some Kreider clients.
